Book SynopsisWater justice is becoming an ever-more pressing issue in times of increasing water-based inequalities and discrimination. Megacities, mining, forestry, industry and agribusiness claim an increasingly large share of available surface and groundwater reserves. Water grabbing and pollution generate poverty and endanger ecosystems'' sustainability. Beyond large, visible injustices, the book also unfolds the many ''hidden'' water world injustices, subtly masked as ''rational'', ''equitable'' and ''democratic''. It features critical conceptual approaches, including analysis of environmental, social, cultural and legal issues surrounding the distribution and management of water. Illustrated with case studies of historic and contemporary water injustices and contestations around the world, the book lays new ground for challenging current water governance forms and unequal power structures. It also provides inspiration for building alternative water realities. With contributions from renowned sTrade Review'This is a major book on the political ecology of water conflicts by the top experts in the field. It defines a new field of study, 'water justice'. It's a great addition to the study of local and global movements against environmental injustice with a focus on water-grabbing and unequal access to water for irrigation, mining, urban sanitation, and hydroelectricity.' Joan Martinez-Alier, Emeritus Professor of Economics and Economic History, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona'Boelens, Perreault and Vos have assembled a genuinely impressive set of authors to tackle the nature, meaning, and drivers of water injustices across the world, and to explore the possibilities of water justice. While the picture is far from rosy, the book provides rich theoretical and empirical perspectives through which to understand the inequities surrounding the control and use of water and to imagine alternative futures. This text will be a point of reference for many years to come.' Anthony Bebbington, Australian Laureate Fellow, University of Melbourne, and Milton P. and Alice C. Higgins Professor of Environment and Society, Clark University, Massachusetts'This timely and engaging volume by some of the world's foremost scholars on water constitutes a loud sound of alarm. Not only that, it shows why liberal and neoliberal water rationalities … won't work. Proposed instead is a sophisticated approach to the question of water as nature, and of its relation to justice, from which emerges a powerful framework for alternative hydrosocialities. By reminding us that what is at stake … is people's very right to exist, Water Justice enables us to imagine and construct other paths for fair and wise water policies.' Arturo Escobar, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill'It would be difficult to overstate the global significance of water injustice, which continues to be a major obstacle preventing millions of human beings from enjoying a dignified life. Water Justice addresses key aspects of this complex problem, bringing together a unique international team of scholars. This is not only a timely collection, but also one that provides access to rich theoretical arguments and empirical examples that allow an in-depth treatment of the topic. The book is a welcome contribution for academics, students, and practitioners, and will attract a wider readership among those concerned with the future of civilized human life.' José Esteban Castro, Newcastle University''Water justice!' is the rallying cry of this book. It explores in a readable, illuminating and comprehensive way the multiple dimensions of water injustice and the diverse struggles to change these.' • Uneasy Partnerships: China’s Engagement with

Stanford University Press Uneasy Partnerships: China’s Engagement with

Book SynopsisUneasy Partnerships presents the analysis and insights of practitioners and scholars who have shaped and examined China's interactions with key Northeast Asian partners. Using the same empirical approach employed in the companion volume, The New Great Game (Stanford, 2016), this new text analyzes the perceptions, priorities, and policies of China and its partners to explain why dyadic relationships evolved as they have during China's "rise." Synthesizing insights from an array of research, Uneasy Partnerships traces how the relationships that formed between China and its partner states—Japan, the Koreas, and Russia—resulted from the interplay of competing and compatible objectives, as well as from the influence of third-country ties. These findings are used to identify patterns and trends and to develop a framework that can be used to illuminate and explain Beijing's engagement with the rest of the world.Trade Review"Uneasy Partnerships is a masterful examination of China's complex interactions with its immediate neighbors. The volume provides a convincing case that China has pursued parallel goals of security and economic development for forty years, and, in the process, its interactions with neighboring countries have continually shifted with fluctuating Chinese concerns over what those countries might do for China as well as what they might do to China. The fine-grained strands of this complex story are woven into a compelling macro-level analysis of Northeast Asia that will be applauded by experts and generalists alike." -- T.J. Pempel * University of California, Berkeley *"Despite the focus on the South China Sea in recent years, this excellent volume makes clear that China's most important economic relations and most difficult security challenges lie in Northeast Asia. Rejecting the common approaches of applying grand theories to Asia or focusing solely on how Asia is responding to the rise of China, the nuanced analysis and empirical rigor in these chapters reveals the complex and multi-faceted nature of China's interactions with Japan, Russia, and the two Koreas. With insights from Western and Asian experts, this is one of the best volumes on China and Northeast Asia that has been published in recent years." -- Michael A. Glosny, Naval Postgraduate School * Department of National Security Affairs *"China's rising power in international affairs has wrought uncertain consequences in every region of the world, but none so much as northeast Asia, the arena of great power competition and conflict among Japan, Russia, the United States, and China for more than a century. This timely volume offers keen insights by a multi-national roster of contributors not simply into China's rise and the responses of the region's players to it, but also into their active pursuit of their own interests and goals by using China's rise to their own advantage in the region. Highly recommended." -- Alice Miller * Stanford University *"Uneasy Partnerships well captures the reality of China's relations with its northeast Asian neighbours and presents diverse views from the field. It offers abundant cool-headed analyses that could easily form actionable policy advice for the United States and others." -- Fei-Ling Wang * Pacific Affairs *Table of ContentsContents and Abstracts1Uneasy Partnerships Thomas Fingar chapter abstractThis chapter describes the framework that helped focus the work of contributors and explains why this approach was utilized instead of approaches that attempt to prove or disprove general theories about China's foreign policy behavior or to explain the actions of China and specific partners using international relations theory. The framework required contributors to identify the most important factors shaping the perceptions, priorities, and policies of the country examined, and to pay particular attention to the relative importance of security and economic concerns and objectives. 2Sources and Shapers of China's Global Engagement Thomas Fingar chapter abstractThis chapter examines the overarching objectives of China's "reform and opening" strategy in order to provide a baseline and context for understanding how China's engagement with the partners examined in other chapters reflects and derives from the strategy to achieve wealth, power, and influence through participation in the liberal international order led by the United States. It argues that China's highest priorities are security/stability and sustained economic development/modernization, and that Beijing's policies toward other countries are shaped by perceptions of what a given country can do to threaten or enhance China's security, and what that country can contribute to China's quest for rapid economic growth. Geography, history, relationships with key third countries, and developments in the international system, especially the end of the Cold War also play important roles, as do changes resulting from China's economic success. 3China's Global Engagement: A Chinese Perspective Liru Cui chapter abstractThis chapter examines many of the same factors and considerations as are examined from an American perspective in Chapter 2 but from a Chinese perspective. A principal difference is that this chapter emphasizes what the author considers to be unique features of China's approach, including a "win-win" approach that enables other states to benefit from China's rise and does not threaten the security or prosperity of others. 4Beijing's Japan Dilemma: Balancing Nationalism, Legitimacy, and Economic Opportunity Suisheng Zhao chapter abstractThis chapter examines dilemmas resulting from the fact that China's quest for modernity can be assisted and accelerated by taking advantage of Japan's markets, technologies, capital, proximity, and incentives to assist and capitalize on China's eagerness to attract foreign investment, but a quest that is constrained by historical memories and the part hostility to Japan plays in the legitimizing mythology of the Chinese Communist Party. China "needs" Japan to achieve sustained growth, but party leaders must react forcefully to any real or perceived threat or affront from Japan. Public readiness to protest alleged Japanese affronts is a problem for Beijing because demonstrations can easily morph into protests against corruption, environmental degradation, or other downsides of China's developmental model and/or damage Japanese property in ways that could cause Japan to pull back form engagement with China. 5Japan and the Rise of China: From Affinity to Alienation Seiichiro Takagi chapter abstractThis chapter traces the evolution of Japanese perceptions of and response to China's quest for sustained growth through engagement with the United States and its allies. Initially, and for many years, Japan was a willing contributor to China's "rise" and anticipated that economic development in China would be accompanied by political reform and amelioration of historical grievances. Japanese public opinion toward China soured markedly as China was perceived to act more aggressively toward Japan, and as anti-Japanese demonstrations in China rekindled concern about China's regional and global ambitions. 6China and Korea: Proximity, Priorities, and Policy Evolution Thomas Fingar chapter abstractThis chapter examines the evolution of China's perceptions of and policies toward North and South Korea and how they changed in response to the end of the Cold War, South Korea's emergence as an advanced industrial economy eager and able to assist and take advantage of China's quest for sustained growth, and North Korea's decreasing utility as a security buffer and limited inability to contribute to China's modernization. It traces the transformation of Chinese perceptions of North Korea from useful buffer to problematic source of instability hazardous to China's strategy of development, and the transformation of Beijing's perception of South Korea from adversary and ally of Washington to contributor to China's development and less certain partner of the United States. 7South Korea's Approach to a Rising China: Pragmatic Opportunism Myung-Hwan Yu chapter abstractThis chapter describes South Korea's wariness about China's rise, eagerness to take advantage of economic opportunities resulting from China's development, and hope that China will contribute to management and alleviation of North Korean hostility. It describes the pragmatic, even utilitarian ways in which South Korea perceives and responds to developments in China while holding tight to its alliance with the United States. China and the ROK know one another well and interact with clear-eyed pragmatism and opportunism. 8Geography and Destiny: DPRK Concerns and Objectives with Respect to China Thomas Fingar and David Straub chapter abstractThis chapter examines North Korean concerns and attempts to placate, balance, and benefit from its far larger neighbor. China's rapprochement with the United States triggered its nuclear weapons program and Beijing's "abandonment" of the North in order to pursue economic opportunities with the South prompted the DPRK to seek better relations with Washington, Tokyo, and Seoul, but those efforts failed, leaving it even more dependent on an increasingly unfriendly China. 9Soviet/Russia-China Relations: Coming Full Circle? Artyom Lukin chapter abstractThis chapter focuses on Soviet/Russian perceptions of China's rise and describes how developments in both countries made it difficult or unimportant for either to devote much attention to the other until quite recently when they rediscovered useful economic and political complementarities. Neither wants to return to anything like their relationship in the 1950s but there may be some nostalgia or renewed interest in using relations with one another to counterbalance the United States. 10China's Engagement with Northeast Asia: Patterns,Trends, and Themes Thomas Fingar chapter abstractThis chapter identifies and explores a number of patterns and trends in China's engagement with key states in Northeast Asia, tracing several of them to the influence of third country developments, geography, and growing interdependence. It also compares findings and patterns that emerge from the chapters in this book to those of the companion volume on China's relations with South and Central Asia.

  • Oilcraft: The Myths of Scarcity and Security That

Stanford University Press Oilcraft: The Myths of Scarcity and Security That

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA bracing corrective to the myths that have shaped economic, military, and diplomatic policy, dispelling our oil-soaked fantasies of dependence. There is a conventional wisdom about oil—that the U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf is what guarantees access to this strategic resource; that the "special" relationship with Saudi Arabia is necessary to stabilize an otherwise volatile market; and that these assumptions in turn provide Washington enormous leverage over Europe and Asia. Except, the conventional wisdom is wrong. Robert Vitalis debunks the myths to reveal "oilcraft," a line of magical thinking closer to witchcraft than statecraft. Oil is a commodity like any other: bought, sold, and subject to market forces. Thus, the first goal of this book is to expose the suspect fears of oil scarcity and conflict. The second goal is to investigate the significant geopolitical impact of these false beliefs. In particular, Vitalis shows how we can reconsider the question of the U.S.–Saudi special relationship, which confuses and traps many into unnecessarily accepting what they imagine is a devil's bargain. The House of Saud does many things for U.S. investors, firms, and government agencies, but guaranteeing the flow of oil, making it cheap, or stabilizing the price isn't one of them. Freeing ourselves from the spell of oilcraft won't be easy—but the benefits make it essential.Trade Review"Oilcraft eviscerates all the fundamental myths about the so-called special relationship between the House of Saud and the U.S. foreign policy establishment. Robert Vitalis thinks way outside the conventional wisdom—and the implications are startling: we don't need a devil's bargain with Saudi princes, least of all with a mad crown prince."—Kai Bird, author of The Good Spy and American Prometheus"Oilcraft dismantles, demolishes, and incinerates the bogus claims and specious myths that for decades now have perverted U.S. policy in the Middle East. In this briskly written and thoroughly documented study, Robert Vitalis demonstrates that America's 'endless wars' have their origins in an apparently inexhaustible capacity for self-deception."—Andrew Bacevich, author of The Age of Illusion: How America Squandered Its Cold War Victory"Robert Vitalis has once again revealed that our conventional wisdom is filled with empty, and often dangerous, self-delusions. Taking on the virtually unanimous conviction that a longstanding 'oil-for-security deal' underpins U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia, he shows it to be inaccurate, illogical, deceptive, and ultimately self-defeating. Vintage Vitalis, this book is a triumph of clear-eyed and courageous criticism."—Lisa Anderson, Columbia University, author of Pursuing Truth, Exercising Power: Social Science and Public Policy in the Twenty-First Century"Robert Vitalis's Oilcraft couldn't be more timely. For decades, the idea that the United States objectively needs oil has been taken as gospel, justifying U.S. power in the world while clouding critiques of that power. This book is indispensable to understanding the current moment, showing that moving beyond fossil fuels is more akin to quitting a sect than breaking an addiction."—Greg Grandin, author of The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America"If one accepts Mr. Vitalis's scarcity/security thesis, there's much to explore regarding American shale and geopolitics."—Mark P. Mills, Wall Street Journal"Vitalis makes a strong case against delusional thinking, whether in domestic affairs (especially regarding fossil fuel dependence) or across geopolitical boundaries. Recommended."—G. A. McBeath, CHOICE"Robert Vitalis' latest book, Oilcraft, is a valuable addition to the new wave of critical studies on the history of oil and 'energy policy' that have appeared in recent years... Oilcraft takes on the most fundamental guiding principles behind scholarship and policy-making: namely that the United States' need to secure the free flow of cheap oil has driven some of its most unsavory foreign policy positions. [Vitalis] turns the focus back on American academics, think tanks, and policy circles to trace the origins of this pervasive myth about the need, or even the mere ability, to secure access to, and the affordability of, oil."—James M. Gustafson, Diplomatic History"A short, spirited polemic, Oilcraft deserves a wide readership. Vitalis provides a useful reference for those making the arguments that conservation and markets, not garrisons and aircraft carriers, should underpin U.S. energy supply."—Paul Musgrave, Political Science Quarterly"Even if one does not delight in aggressive polemics,Oilcraft is highly recommendable to anybody interested in the history of oil and international relations.... It is particularly illuminating to read it in 2022 as the Russian war on Ukraine has produced a new wave of geopolitical thinking in which what Vitalis calls 'raw materialism' plays a prominent role."—Rüdiger Graf, H-Soz-KultTable of Contents1. • Women Development and the UN

Indiana University Press Women Development and the UN

Book SynopsisTraces the ways in which women have enriched the work of the United Nations from the time of its founding in 1945. This book reviews the evolution of the UN's programs aimed at benefiting the women of developing nations and the impact of women's ideas about rights, equality, and social justice on UN thinking and practice regarding development.Trade Review"This is the 7th of a 14-volume comprehensive history of the United Nations (UN). The book begins with the UN's founding in 1945, when only 4 of the 160 signatories were women, from the Dominican Republic, Brazil, China, and the US. For gender scholars, political scientists, and academics, this is a detailed account of how women used their social capital, power, and networks to measure and highlight women's status around the world. Many familiar concepts and measures of gender inequality are traced to the UN's Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a subcommittee established within the UN's first year. Equality, political suffrage, child marriage, widow rights, and all aspects ofwomen's visible and invisible work are a few of the measures and studies stemming from the commission. The book details the four global women's conferences (Mexico, Copenhagen, Nairobi, and Beijing). Surely, the impact on women's lives-particularly those of the south-is one of the UN's greatest accomplishments. Summing Up:Recommended. Most levels/librarie" -A. S. Book SynopsisThis book examines the electoral successes of anti-system forces in the rich democracies. It explains the rise of anti-system politicians and parties in terms of two separate but closely related developments: the rise of economic inequality and insecurity over the last four decades, and the failure of technocratic elites to address them.Trade ReviewJonathan Hopkin offers a well-researched book which identifies connections between the anti-system politics in the United States, Britain, Greece, Spain and Italy. He finds there is a clear divide in how Northern and Southern Europe express their forms of anti-system politics. But he demonstrates how they both have common threads which tie them into a common zeitgeist which has affected the Western political tradition. Book SynopsisDo international human rights treaties constrain governments from repressing their populations and violating rights? In Contentious Compliance, Courtenay R. Conrad and Emily Hencken Ritter present a new theory of human rights treaty effects founded on the idea that governments repress as part of a domestic conflict with potential or actual dissidents. By introducing dissent like peaceful protests, strikes, boycotts, or direct violent attacks on government, their theory improves understanding of when states will violate rights-and when international laws will work to protect people. Conrad and Ritter investigate the effect of international human rights treaties on domestic conflict and ultimately find that treaties improve human rights outcomes by altering the structure of conflict between political authorities and potential dissidents. A powerful, careful, and empirically sophisticated rejoinder to the critics of international human rights law, Contentious Compliance offers new insights and analyses that will reshape our thinking on law and political violence.Table of ContentsDedication Acknowledgments Professional acknowledgments Personal acknowledgments: Courtenay Personal acknowledgments: Emily I Introduction 1 Do human rights treaties protect rights? Out of stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn Kal Raustiala, Ralph Bunche has found his most attentive, incisive, and sympathetic biographer. Arguably the nation's most significant envoi of the American Century, Dr. Bunche emerges from these pages a brilliant, complex figure—equally pragmatic and visionary, cautious and courageous. We discover a precocious Black kid with worldly dreams; a genuine internationalist skeptical of nationalisms; an intellectual maverick who helped to construct the postwar global order while insisting on a planet without colonies. An absolutely indispensable book. * Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original *The Absolutely Indispensable Man is a magisterial tour through the life of Ralph Bunche filled with riveting history, hard-earned wisdom, and essential lessons for our own times. At a time of global disorder, Kal Raustiala brings us the incredibly full life of a man represented the best of what both America and the international order could be. * Ben Rhodes, author of After the Fall and The World as It Is *Not only a brilliant assessment of my grandfather's international career, but a timely reminder of the central role of the United Nations and UN peacekeeping in the liberation of colonized and oppressed people. * Ralph J. Bunche III, General Secretary of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization *When Ralph Bunche was born in 1903, nearly half the world's population—the darker half—lived under colonial rule. By the time of his death in 1971, colonialism was dead and the newly independent states had a voice in world affairs through the United Nations. As Kal Raustiala so convincingly demonstrates, no one was more central to decolonization or to the UN than Ralph Bunche. * Charles P. Henry, Professor Emeritus of African-American Studies, University of California at Berkeley *This is an outstanding biography. If someone had asked me whether we needed another biography of Bunche after Brian Urquhart's seminal study, I would have said, 'No.' Then I read Kal Raustiala's extraordinary volume. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn Nasty Politics, Zeitzoff explores why some politicians resort to insults, accusations, threats, and incitement of violence, even though the majority of the population finds such behavior repulsive. Drawing from data from the US, Israel, and Ukraine, he shows that 'outsiders and losers' use such rhetoric to gain attention and mobilize the segment of the population that supports it * and that words have consequences. It's hard to imagine a timelier book.Erica Chenoweth, Harvard University *In the first comprehensive account of the causes and consequences of 'nasty politics,' Zeitzoff uses extensive survey and experimental evidence from the US, Ukraine, and Israel to show why politicians use insults, threats, and incitement and why these tactics so often succeed despite the public's ostensible distaste for them. Anyone who wants a better politics should heed these lessons. * Brendan Nyhan, Dartmouth College *Theoretically, Nasty Politics is highly original and has important qualitative and quantitative evidence of the existence and growth of the nasty style. It also outlines in creative ways the public's reactions to this style across three democracies and the implications for democracy. Book SynopsisWhy Is the Middle East Entering a “New Era?” Is It a New Dawn? Is It a Setting Sun? In the third decade of the twenty-first century, the Middle East is entering a new era. A multifaceted and intricate equilibrium will write the next chapter of this region. The new era we are entering is fraught with challenges and full of opportunities. The new era is both defined by, and a result of, a combination of ancient and modern, domestic, regional, and international processes. Iran and Turkey each strive to position themselves as the regional superpower. In parallel, the people of the region struggle to overcome increasing domestic challenges. These developments, combined with an escalating struggle over path, identity, and direction, could result in a new model of statehood in the Arab world. While some countries take the turbulent path toward a possible new statehood model, others are fighting for their sovereignty and survival. All of this is occurring while Western hegemony in the Middle East is coming to an end and the Eastern giants are on the rise. Acclaimed Middle East expert, an Israeli fluent in Arabic, English, and Hebrew, Avi Melamed has a proven exceptional record of foreseeing the evolution of events in the Middle East and their impact on a local and regional level. In this book, Melamed takes you on a fascinating eye-opening journey through the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East in the third decade of the twenty first century. He challenges common Western concepts, narratives, and theories. And he provides predictions about some of the most central regional issues of the day. Using primarily sources from the region, Avi Melamed provides a professional, rare insider’s view and clearly and insightfully contextualizes current regional events. Inside The Middle East: Entering a New Era provides the knowledge and tools to connect the dots. This distinct understanding allows the reader to build a multidimensional picture of the geopolitical reality of the Middle East today and provides an unparalleled foundation for navigating the events of tomorrow.Trade Review“As relationships across the Middle East evolve, it is increasingly important to have a profound understanding of the region. Avi Melamed offers a unique and unparalleled grasp of the trends and changes impacting us all. Inside the MiddleEast: Entering a New Era provides a comprehensive analysis of events, enabling a foundation for dialogue between people of all faiths and backgrounds.”—AHMED OBAID ALMANSOORI, former member of the Federal National Council, founder of the Strategists and the Crossroad of Civilizations Museum, United Arab Emirates “A very rich overview of the formidable challenges in the complex Middle East. Avi Melamed uses his intelligence expertise and hits the mark in identifying the impact of internal and external conflicts on the stability of the region. Inside theMiddle East: Entering a New Era draws this new world into focus explaining what the ‘Abraham Accords’ mean as many Islamic countries are getting closer to peace and recognition with Israel.”—AREIG ELHAG, Sudanese American journalist “This book is a magnifying glass and an important tool for understanding the forces that are rising and falling in the Middle East … Avi Melamed has wisely succeeded in clearly explaining and outlining to the reader the complexity of the processes that are taking place in the region. This book is a guide for those who want to truly understand … By taking us on a journey through the area, Avi Melamed brilliantly reveals to us the secrets of the Middle East. I highly recommend reading this book. When you start reading it, it is very difficult to stop because every sentence in it is a kind of spectacular piece of information that sheds light on things that were previously difficult for us to understand.”—FIRAS HAMED, head of Middle East News Division, Makan Arabic Channel, Israeli Broadcast Corporation “Avi Melamed’s book is taking the Western reader into a journey to the future of the Middle East, based upon an expert analysis of the current reality. This book should be thoroughly studied by diplomats, national security advisors, think tanks, and everyone interested in keeping pace with the evolving dynamics of the most complicated region on Planet Earth.”—DALIA ZIADA, director of the Liberal Democracy Institute, Egypt

  • Manchester University Press Israelpolitik: German–Israeli Relations, 1949-69

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe rapprochement between Germany and Israel in the aftermath of the Holocaust is one of the most striking political developments of the twentieth century. German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently referred to it as a ‘miracle’. But how did this ‘miracle’ come about? In this book, Lorena De Vita traces the contradictions and dilemmas that shaped the making of German–Israeli relations at the outset of the global Cold War.Examining well known events like the Suez Crisis, the Eichmann Trial, and the Six-Day War, the book adopts a ‘pericentric’ perspective on the Cold War era, drawing attention to the actions and experiences of minor players within the confrontation and highlighting the consequences of their political calculations. Israelpolitik takes two of the most interesting dimensions of the Cold War – the German problem and the Middle East conflict – and weaves them together, providing a bipolar history of German-Israeli relations in the aftermath of the Holocaust.Drawing upon sources from both sides of the Iron Curtain and of the Arab–Israeli conflict, the book offers new insights not only into the early history of German–Israeli relations, but also into the dynamics of the Cold War competition between the two German states, as each attempted to strengthen its position in the Middle East and in the international arena while struggling with the legacy of the Nazi past.Trade Review'A fresh, exceptionally well-researched perspective on Cold War diplomacy [.] Israelpolitik is a remarkably nuanced work that will shape future scholarship not only on German-Israeli relations, but also on the history of modern Germany itself.' Kirkus Reviews'Setting out to reassess the relations of both East and West Germany with Israel in a formative period (1949–1969), Lorena De Vita produced an engaging monograph that is unafraid to challenge official rhetoric about the genesis and development of that emotionally fraught history.' Guy Laron, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Journal of Strategic Studies '[A] deft and original study [.] Israelpolitik provides much new information on the two Germanys' diplomatic tactics and strategies towards Israel and the Arab world. De Vita's scrupulous analysis of the strains of German-Israeli reconciliation represents a model treatment of a complex Cold War subject.' Carole Fink, Humanities Distinguished Professor, University of Ohio, German History 'This book is an incredibly nuanced investigation of the inter-German rivalry in the Middle East that serves to illustrate the multifaceted complexity of the global Cold War. It is an important, timely contribution to the growing literature on regional and local cold wars that highlights the agency of middle powers, in this case East and West Germany. A must-read for anyone interested in the history of the German Cold War, German-Israeli ties, and the politics of memory.' Sergey Radchenko, Professor of International Relations, Cardiff University 'At long last - a book about German-Israeli relations that reaches beyond the conventional story. The reader is exposed to the complex interplay between the cold war, the rivalry between the two Germanies, the conflict in the Middle-East, the tensions within the West-German-East-German-Israeli triangle and the role collective memory plays in politics.' Moshe Zimmermann, Professor Emeritus, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem 'By recasting West German-Israeli relations against the backdrop of relentlessly opportunistic East German pressures, De Vita brings fresh and significant insights to such milestones as the Luxembourg Agreements, the Suez Crisis, Adenauer's meeting with Ben Gurion, and the Eichmann trial. This is finely textured international history at its best.' William Glenn Gray, author of Germany's Cold War 'De Vita bases her monograph on a wide array of primary sources[.] [...] One would be hard-pressed to find another study of the German-Israeli question in the English language that is supported by such a vast array of primary materials.' Jacob Tovy, Researcher, Herzl Institute, University of Haifa, Central European History‘[Israelpolitik] analyzes the legacy and management of the Nazi past which leads to two inverted positions, in a mirror relationship which opposed each of the two German states to its alter ego and to the other [Cold War] camp’ Dominique Trimbur, Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah, Relations Internationales '[Israelpolitik] is simply good history that politely transcends self-serving mythologies.' Daniel Marwecki, author of Germany and Israel: Whitewashing and Statebuilding, European Review of History: Revue Européenne d’Histoire'An impressive portrait of the triangular constellation between the Federal Republic, the GDR and Israel.' Joseph Ben Prestel, Freie Universität Berlin, H-Soz-Kult'In their policy towards Israel, the two German states carried out their ideological conflict [.] on the political stage of international relations. This has always been about coming to terms with the National Socialist past. Lorena De Vita shows [this] in an impressive way.' Sybille Steinbacher, Director of the Fritz Bauer Institute, Professor of the History and Impact of the Holocaust, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main'De Vita’s book—covering twenty years of the history of three newly founded states in the aftermath of WorldWar II with its hitherto unseen crimes against humanity—shows what smart historiography can do for public enlightenment: It presents in great detail and splendid conceptual clarity what was done and said in the background, whereas grand expressions like “miracle” and “reconciliation” are directed at the broader public. Book SynopsisThe post-Arab Spring collapse of decades-old regimes inaugurated a decade of re-shaping for the geopolitical order in the Middle East and North Africa region. A multipolar disorder ensued, solidified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Amid general bewilderment, the small monarchies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) spent the decade between 2011 and 2022 trying to re-shape regional equilibria as protagonists. This book applies an original theoretical framework to unpack the threat perceptions and strategic calculus driving the behaviour of these new impactful regional players. Six chapters look at the six GCC monarchies individually. The author challenges commonly held narratives and goes beyond attention-grabbing headlines and thus provides reading keys to the past, present and future of policy-making in the Gulf monarchies, middle powers destined to play an oversized role in the new multipolar world.Table of ContentsIntroduction1 The geopolitics of polarisation in the Gulf2 Theoretical framework Part I: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE: the elusive quest for a security alliance3 Bahrain4 Saudi Arabia5 The United Arab EmiratesPart II: Kuwait and Oman: hedging between security and stability6 Kuwait7 OmanPart III: The centrifugal nature of Qatar’s security8 Qatar9 Conclusions

Book SynopsisIn 1975, Emmanuel Todd predicted the decline and fall of the Soviet Union, drawing on research from cultural anthropology and demography as well as economics. At the time his findings challenged a conventional wisdom that saw in the Communist world a dynamic and growing challenge to the West. Generations of Kremlinologists may not have known much, but they knew that Todd was wrong - until 1989, that is, when conventional wisdom retired hurt. Now Todd returns to the debate on the future of international power relations with another startling prediction. Far from being at the apogee of its power, the United States of America is now locked in the messy and disruptive logic of decline. Because the world has long relied on America as a source of stability, it is now desperately important for us to find a way to contain the shock waves from America's impending collapse as the sole superpower. This is not a book from an anti-American, and you will not find a smooth recitation of the standard arguments of Left or Right. It is that unfashionable thing - a determined and unembarrassed attempt to tell the truth.Trade ReviewA powerful antidote to hysterical exaggeration of American power and potential by American triumphalists and anti-American polemicists alike. * Michael Lind, author of Made in Texas: George W. Bush and the Takeover of American Politics *I would recommend this extraordinary book to everyone troubled by US neo-imperialism . . . this is a brave and challenging book which contains a great deal of truth. * Clare Short, MP *

Book SynopsisThe resolution of the complex Jammu & Kashmir problem cannot be over-emphasised. However, a web of external and political-social-legal-economic factors within the country has created a knotty problem which require long term strategising and a whole of the government approach to find solutions that improve the overall security situation and foster peace and prosperity. This book has tapped a vast knowledge bank and experience of various sections of society in the form of a Net Assessment. Based on these inputs, it has analyzed the perceptions of various actors and have come up with viable strategies for short, medium and long term. The author strongly believes that in the coming years the battle for Jammu and Kashmir will increasingly shift to the cognitive domain and perception management will be the key to success, hence through this book and the study he has attempted to identify each and every factor playing on the minds of the people of J&K with special reference to Kashmir.Over the years many books have been written on the situation in Kashmir, but most of them paint only the not so rosy picture that the state has gone through in the years of turmoil, almost certainly none give a roadmap with logic for solutions towards achieving peace and prosperity. This book is an attempt towards this end.

OUP Pakistan Destined to Fail Democracy and State Building Experiment in PostTaliban Afghanistan

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book contributes to the critical debate of exogenous state- and democracy-building experiments pursued in the aftermath of Western-led intervention in war-torn societies. The mistakes committed by the principal intervener, the United States, at the zero hour of state-building in Afghanistan, could not be rectified in the following years of intervention. The 'multilateral state and democracy building project' remained a 'unilateral decision-making project' in practice, making it less cost-effective. Furthermore, a systematic inquiry into the processes establishes the rationale that political change is not the guarantor of social change in conflict-ridden societies like Afghanistan. Failure of the Afghanistan state- and democracy-building experiment clearly shows that the US cannot fix the world according to its own ideas.

Book SynopsisFocusing on relations between Muslims and their host countries, this book examines questions of political representation, identity politics, civil liberties, immigration, and security issues.Trade ReviewThis study, a compilation of papers submitted to a September 2005 Indiana University conference, explores the political impact that the growing Muslim minorities in Western Europe and North America have on their host societies. In addition to editor Abdulkader Sinno's introduction and conclusion, the volume contains 12 chapters organized under four broad themes: background studies of different Western countries' Muslim minorities; their representation and integration in the hosts' political system; Western public opinion toward Muslim immigrants; and the post-9/11 era's implications for majority-minority relations. While Sinno cites the Canadian approach with approval, he portrays an often fraught relationship between Western states and their Muslim citizens, and offers a broad range of suggestions for both communities to move towards a genuinely tolerant and integrated society. Book SynopsisJust a few years ago, most Russian citizens did not recognize the notion of domestic violence or acknowledge that such a problem existed. Today, after years of local and international pressure to combat violence against women, things have changed dramatically. This title examines why and how this shift occurred.Trade ReviewOverall, this is an interesting account of a period of US-led development intervention in Russia and how it was, to a greater or lesser extent, shaped by the actions and goals of feminist activists. As such, it will be relevant to anyone concerned with the way that feminist concerns and development intervention interact, and with the recent development of feminism and civil society in Russia.March 2010 * Gender & Development *...well done and well structured. ...[P]rovides a well elaborated explanatory model of the effects of foreign intervention on the articulation of gender violence and the struggle against gender violence, and the limitations of this struggle, in Russia.Vol. 69. 2 Summer 2010 -- Anna Temkina * European Univ at St. Petersburg, Russia *[T]his is a very interesting, complex and well informed study, highly recommendable not only for scholars within the field of Russian studies, but for all who are interested in global feminism, development aid, and international relations.69.3, July 2010 * The Russian Review *Gender Violence in Russia provides an excellent account of the trials and tribulations of global feminism in Russia during this last, difficult decade. Vol. 6, No. 4, 2010 * Politics and Gender *In periods of rapid social change, the poets of one ideological system or another rush to find the cogent metaphor or, more recently, the winning soundbite, that will interpret the change to suit their own ends, to control meaning. To find and sell the right descriptive phrase is to raise the flag of possession over a historical event. For example, the collapse of the Soviet Union—or, even more stridently, the U.S. victory in the Cold War—spins the end of the 1980s, the end of history, as some proclaimed it, as a triumph of righteousness, rendered even more morally spectacular by the supposed 'coldness' of the conflict, and the ushering in of a new world order. That's why a book like Janet Johnson's 'Gender Violence in Russia' is so badly needed. The conclusion Johnson's study reaches is . . . that what really works, in terms of feminist intervention, are 'alliances between global feminists and large donors.' Money talks, apparently; or rather its use in creating organizations for women's advocacy is the best agent for social change. What Johnson calls 'flexible and responsive funding' is the key, targeting funds where they are most needed and can do the most good to protect women and to begin to change cultures of violence which have proven fearfully resistant to change.July 2, 2009 -- Rick Taylor * Feminist Review *All in all, this book provides us with a primary argument about the success and failure of international intervention for women's rights, but it can be read in many different ways: as a story about women's movements, as multiple stories about developing policy agendas on different forms of gender violence, as a story about weak state capacity in post-Soviet transition states, or as a story of transnational feminist networking. The wealth of data presented allows all of these readings. I highly recommend this book. * Perspectives on Politics *Table of ContentsPreface: Can Intervention Help Women?AcknowledgmentsList of Abbreviations1. Book SynopsisInsights from four decades of survey research in the Middle EastTrade ReviewPublic Opinion in the Middle East . . . is a well-written compilation of public opinion research that reflects the past 30 to 40 years of political, social, and economic progression in the Middle East. More broadly, this text will be applicable to survey researchers whose populations of interest are hard to reach, reside in political situations that make research difficult, or are diverse in terms of religion, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. * PUBLIC OPINION QUARTERLY *[T]his book is a standard reference for students interested in Middle East politics, since it displays the frontline of the study of political culture in the Islamic world. Because of recent political developments in the Arab world, this book is expected to be used as a reference for future studies. * The Developing Economies *This volume is a valuable scholarly entry. . . . [T]he essays in this anthology touch upon core thematic issues profoundly relevant to the study of Middle East politics. It is a worthy contribution. * Intl. Book SynopsisA foundational analysis of the co-evolution of the internet and international relations, examining resultant challenges for individuals, organizations, firms, and states. In our increasingly digital world, data flows define the international landscape as much as the flow of materials and people. How is cyberspace shaping international relations, and how are international relations shaping cyberspace? In this book, Nazli Choucri and David D. Clark offer a foundational analysis of the co-evolution of cyberspace (with the internet as its core) and international relations, examining resultant challenges for individuals, organizations, and states. The authors examine the pervasiveness of power and politics in the digital realm, finding that the internet is evolving much faster than the tools for regulating it. This creates a “co-evolution dilemma”—a new reality in which digital interactions have enabled weaker actors to influence or threaten stronger actors,

Book SynopsisWhy the news about the global decline of infectious diseases is not all good.Plagues and parasites have played a central role in world affairs, shaping the evolution of the modern state, the growth of cities, and the disparate fortunes of national economies. This book tells that story, but it is not about the resurgence of pestilence. It is the story of its decline. For the first time in recorded history, virus, bacteria, and other infectious diseases are not the leading cause of death or disability in any region of the world. People are living longer, and fewer mothers are giving birth to many children in the hopes that some might survive. And yet, the news is not all good. Recent reductions in infectious disease have not been accompanied by the same improvements in income, job opportunities, and governance that occurred with these changes in wealthier countries decades ago. There have also been unintended consequences. In this book, Thomas Bollyky explores the paradox in ou
