Book SynopsisBeing located between the Black and Caspian seas, Azerbaijan has always been the juncture of Eurasia—with a traditional reputation as a crossroads between the north-south and east-west transport corridors—and the traditional ground for competition between numerous regional and global players, using both soft and hard power. With its vast hydrocarbon energy reserves, Azerbaijan is a country of particular importance in the South Caucasus. The region’s complex geopolitics have immensely influenced Azerbaijan’s foreign policy strategy. With the dissolution of the USSR, Azerbaijan, as a new state with fragile security, found itself in a complicated situation surrounded by regional powers like Iran, Russia, and Turkey. This book focuses on several major foreign policy issues faced by the Republic of Azerbaijan since it regained its independence in 1991. These major issues include the conflict with Armenia and related matters, the relationship with the West, as well as the complexities arising from its relationship with Russia and its ties to Muslim countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia.Table of ContentsIntroduction Farid Shafiyev 1. Pentagon Press Look East to Act East: Transforming India-ASEAN

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisAct East Policy launched in 2014 has been one of the signature foreign policy approaches of Modi-1 government and is a proactive foreign policy initiative. The movement from Look East to Act East was necessitated by the changing contours of security architecture in the larger context of the Indo-Pacific region. Act East Policy has further expanded the geography within its imprint; Myanmar to Australia comes under its domain. ASEAN and East Asian countries expect India to play a counter-balancing role within the region. Under Modi government, India has taken a principled stand on disputes like South and East China Seas stating that all disputing parties must adhere to international laws. This policy provides a broad canvass for issues ranging from economy, culture to strategy. The re-election of Modi with a larger majority in May 2019 is bound to consolidate the Act East Policy. India has developed convergences with many important countries of the region under the ambit of this policy and it is bound to pay more dividends in the foreseeable future for India`s national interests.

Book SynopsisIndo-Pacific has become the pivot of the global politics and the salience of the region is bound to increase in the foreseeable future. India`s profile has rapidly grown since the end of Cold War and now India is being considered an important country in shaping the power equilibrium within the Indo-Pacific in particular and at the global level in general. The security architecture has remained turbulent in the region and in this prevailing scenario India has the golden opportunity to maximize its national interests. The phenomenal rise of China in the region and its diverging interests with India and many other important countries within the region have further complicated the security situation. India had a coalition government from 1989 till 2014. The 2014 General elections gave a thumping majority to Modi-led BJP. This government has performed excellently on the foreign policy front in its first tenure and has contributed as a motivating factor in the return of Modi government with a bigger majority in May 2019. At this juncture, India needs to reformulate its policies to cope up with the emerging situation. PM Modi is considered a strong leader and has adopted a pro-active foreign policy. But now, India has to reformulate its foreign policy in a structural manner to cope up with changing global power structure. It offers both challenges and opportunities to the Narendra Modi–led NDA-3 government.

Book SynopsisOn a snowy day in January 1998 Xu Zengping, a Chinese businessman based out of Hong Kong, stood on the deck of the Varyag, a partially constructed aircraft carrier that was being built by the Soviet Union at a shipyard on the Black Sea. Six years later, Xu had apparently bought it for US$ 20 million. It was reported that his firm had no licence, no real address and assets of only US$ 125,000, so it is unclear how it could afford to buy the ship. The report concluded that the Varyag had been bought by the PLA Navy for copying its technology. After the end of the Cold War, China was faced with fundamental challenges - and had to make some critical choices. After Tiananmen: The Rise of China is the story of how it handled its complex domestic and external environment while silently ascending the hierarchy of world power. The book traces the developments in contemporary China from 1989 to 2010, delving into the country''s initial political and economic experiments. It examines the adeptness with which challenges like the ''Malacca Dilemma'' and the resources crunch shaped Chinese policies; how, in the process, the very character of the Chinese Communist Party was fundamentally transformed; and the twists and turns in India''s relationship with China. The sequel to Tiananmen Square: The Making of a Protest, this is an essential primer for those who wish to understand China''s behaviour today.

Book SynopsisThis book is a result of research undertaken on the subject by the scholars associated with the IDSA project on Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) - also known as Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) - which includes both the so-called “Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)” and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). This was legally a part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which acceded to India in October 1947.The authors of this book seek to provide a critical analysis of the politics of the above mentioned two regions within PoK; throw light on the genesis and evolution of various political parties and interest groups, and acquaint the readers with different personalities playing important role in politics therein. The main aim of the publication is to help the scholars, analysts, and policy-makers to understand the dynamics of the political systems in PoK, the complex interaction of these systems with the government in Islamabad and the responses of the local leadership to Pakistan’s strategy of keeping them under strict control in the name of representative governance over the last 70 years.

  • India's Foreign Policy Towards Resurgence

Pentagon Press India's Foreign Policy Towards Resurgence

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe primary role of a nation’s foreign policy is the maintenance and preservation of National Interest. How a nation conceives its national interest and seeks to protect and promote it through its foreign policy must hence be a matter of public importance and discourse. This book expounds upon the various facets of India’s foreign policy, tracing its roots from the times of Chanakya, millennia ago, and then expanding upon the post-independence phase of India’s foreign policy. Chanakya is credited with crafting perhaps the very first treatise on statecraft, sometime in the fourth century BCE. India thus has a rich legacy in dealing with foreign powers towards the furtherance of national interest.Post independence, India’s foreign policy was crafted by its first prime minister and since then has evolved over the last seven decades, maintaining at one level a distinct continuum even as it transferred from one Government to the other. A new zest has however been given to India’s foreign policy over the last four years, and a transformation is visible in multiple ways, though the core remains the same. The transformation is visible in the uncompromising firmness shown on issues related to the nation`s integrity and honour and in that sense, it has become a bold, proactive, innovative and ambitious foreign policy with ‘Samman, Samvad, Samriddhi, Suraksha, Sanskriti evam Sabyatha’ being the driving forces behind India’s global engagement. There is today a greater expectation of India’s role in the world, as reflected by India emerging as a natural participant in several regional and global discourses. Another important transformation has been the rekindling and strengthening of India’s linkages with its diaspora, cooperation in the field of counter terrorism, emphasis on the neighbourhood with significant progress taking place in terms of physical and cultural connectivity and on a renewed economic vigour. This book brings out the dynamics in play in India’s foreign policy and offers a holistic understanding of the factors which have shaped its growth. Covering a vast swathe, it delves on India’s strategic culture and security concerns, economic growth, soft power, and relations with the neighbourhood and the world.

Pentagon Press Assessment of Chinese Military Modernisation and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEver since its creation, China has been claiming territories of numerous countries. There have been wars and clashes, and the usual tone of policy statements has remained assertive. After annexing Tibet, Communist China has described China as a palm with Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Arunachal and Ladakh as the country`s five fingers. It is pertinent to note that some maps have even shown Assam and the Andaman Islands as a part of China. The standard tactics of gradual cartographic invasion seems to have been extended to new areas - tentatively, casually first and then with increasing emphasis until the time comes to usurp the quest.Though Chinese White Papers always project a defensive and peaceful attitude, Beijing`s intentions appear deceptive. China`s official media continues to publicise articles that caution India about China retaining the option of initiating military hostilities. In India, China`s prime target, however, there has been scant research on the modernisation of the Chinese Armed Forces and its impact on Indian security. This book is an effort to fill that gap.

  • To the Edge and Back: 1962 India-China War

Pentagon Press To the Edge and Back: 1962 India-China War

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe saga of 1962 is one of failure at multiple levels. Starting from the failure of the Prime Minister and the government to formulate a coherent national security policy, to the failure of the diplomats to effectively engage and gauge the Chinese. It was a failure on the part of the senior military leadership to provide sound military advice to the political leadership. In fact, they are guilty of ignoring basic military precepts in order to meet political requirements. This book traces the historical background of the boundary dispute and the slow build-up of mistrust, suspicion and acrimony between India and China that started sometime after the `Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai` phase of relationships and resulted in the outbreak of war in October 1962. It documents the course of the battle, where the robust junior leadership and steadfastness of the Indian Jawan are the two factors that stand out as saving grace amidst the overall disaster. Everywhere small bodies of men fought isolated battles under desperate conditions and extreme shortages. In every instance, the junior leaders on the spot led from the forefront, often to their last breath. And the jawans followed their leaders unquestioningly, unhesitatingly and uncomplainingly. Never once were the `Naam, NamakaurNishaan` let down. This was a testimony to the strong espirit de corps forged by the regimental system of the army, which continues to stand the test of time even to date.1,383 soldiers had lost their lives, 1,696 were missing and 3,968 had been captured, of which 36 died in captivity.Written with the lay reader in mind, this book avoids military jargon and can be easily followed by readers without any prior knowledge of military matters . It is suitable for students, youth and others who are interested in learning more about the dispute and the war.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWest Asia continues to churn festered by several hot spots including Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq as Arab Spring 2.0 straddles the region forcing socio-economic reforms. The Middle East Process remains defunct as the Israel-Palestine conflict remains at the brink. The region also continues to suffer from the geopolitical, geo-economic, and geo-religious contestations among major powers like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, and Iran. Qatar has emerged as new 'Go To' country.Due to perceived nonchalance and withdrawal of the USA, which was its sole security guarantor, the regional majors have begun to look for some modus vivendi among themselves as they enhance their engagements with China and Russia, and to a great extent, even India. Rapprochement between Israel and some Arab countries like the UAE and Bahrain and Sudan and Morocco have paved the way for new power equations as India, Israel, the UAE, and the USA become engaged in a new Economic Quartet. The winds of change are visible as the Russia-Ukraine crisis casts a new shadow on the regional dynamic. The quest for strategic autonomy is distinctly on the horizon.Over a dozen distinguished authors and regional experts have delved deep into the evolving security scenario in this compendium. This is a book that clinically examines critical security issues in West Asia, offers insights and affords solutions and some policy choices for India in a dispassionate manner.A must-read for policy makers, students researchers and even experts.

  • The Anti-American Century

Central European University Press The Anti-American Century

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book interrogates the nature of anti-Americanism today and over the last century. It asks several questions: How do we define the phenomenon from different perspectives: political, social, and cultural? What are the historical sources and turning points of anti-Americanism in Europe and elsewhere? What are its links with anti-Semitic sentiment? Has anti-Americanism been beneficial or self-destructive to its "believers"? Finally, how has the United States responded and why? The authors, scholars from a multitude of countries, tackle the potential political consequences of anti-Americanism in Eastern and Central Europe, the region that has been perceived as strongly pro-American.Trade Review"The essays that Ivan Krastev and Alan McPherson have gathered together in this little book represent a distinctive contribution to the burgeoning literature on ‘anti-Americanism.’ They cover a remarkable amount of ground, from South-East Asia to Central Europe, and offer many original insights into the origins and nature of contemporary anti-American sentiment. Anyone seeking to understand this subject—which means everyone who cares about the current unstable state of the world—should read The Anti-American Century." -- Tony Judt"Anti-Americanism is a psychologically complex, politically heterogeneous, and kaleidoscopically evolving cultural attitude. Anyone who wants to understand its multiple roots and paradoxical trajectories should read this fascinating book." -- Stephen Holmes"All too often debates on anti-Americanism disintegrate into simplified black and white slogans of ‘us’ and ‘them.’ In meeting such simple stories, the essays in this volume are a welcome complication and challenge. This volume brings international voices into the dialogue helping us to disentangle the multi-faceted social and political narratives of ‘anti-Americanism’ in this new century." -- Diane StoneTable of ContentsAcknowledgement; Introduction, Ivan Krastev; The Anti-American Century? Book SynopsisUsing Australian history as a case study, this collection explores the ways national identities still resonate in historical scholarship and reexamines key moments in Australian history through a transnational lens, raising important questions about the unique context of Australia’s national narrative. The book examines the tension between national and transnational perspectives, attempting to internationalize the often parochial nation-based narratives that characterize national history. Moving from the local and personal to the global, encompassing comparative and international research and drawing on the experiences of researchers working across nations and communities, this collection brings together diverging national and transnational approaches and asks several critical research questions: What is transnational history? How do new transnational readings of the past challenge conventional national narratives and approaches? What are implications of transnational and international approaches on Australian history? What possibilities do they bring to the discipline? What are their limitations? And finally, how do we understand the nation in this transnational moment?Trade Review“This volume brings together some of our most respected historians to consider the impact of the transnational on Australian history making, on how historians approach their craft, the questions they ask, the sources they seek and how they utilise them. … This volume is a welcome and timely addition to the Australian historiographical canon.” (Malcolm Allbrook, Australian Historical Studies, Vol. 49 (3), 2018)Table of ContentsTesting the Boundaries: Reflections on Transnationalism in Australian History.- Section I Crossing Borders: New Transnational Histories.- A Tale of Two Rivers: The Cooks River and the Los Angeles River in Transnational and Comparative Perspective.- Australia’s Black History: The Politics of Comparison and Transnational Indigenous Activism in Commonwealth Settler States.- Rebel Handmaidens: Transpacific Histories and the Limits of Transnationalism.- Transnationalism and the Writing of Australian Women’s History.- Section II National Histories in an Age of Transnationalism.- Is Australian History Over-determined by the Transnational Turn?.- Australia’s 1980s in Transnational Perspective.- Subjects and Readers: National and Transnational Contexts.- Reading Postwar Reconstruction Through National and Transnational Lenses.- Section III Intimacy and Transnationalism: Reading Vernacular Histories.- Thinking Transnationally about Sexuality: Homosexuality in Australia or Australian Homosexualities?.- Family History and Transnational Historical Consciousness.- Intimate Jurisdictions: Reflections upon the Relationship Between Sentiment, Law and Empire.

  • Springer Verlag, Singapore Competition and Compromise among Chinese Actors

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explains why conflict exists among Chinese foreign-policy actors in Africa and argues against the concept that China has a grand strategy in relation to Africa. It does so by examining Sino-African relations by focusing on how China’s Africa policy is constructed and implemented concluding that a large number of actors are active in its formulation and implementation. The book argues that China’s Hegemonic Political Discourse (HPD), the goal of achieving a Harmonious Society and later the Chinese Dream through the Scientific Concept of Development, has dominated Chinese political discourse. It is this HPD that acts as the structural imperative that allows for collective action in the Chinese foreign-policy process in Africa rather than a Chinese grand strategy since the actors are unwilling to break the social norms of the collective process for fear of exclusion. This book will be of great interest to China watchers and those eager to understand how China's rise will impact the developing world. Table of Contents1. Introduction.- 2. Book SynopsisThis open access book consists of essays written by Kishore Mahbubani to explore the challenges and dilemmas faced by the West and Asia in an increasingly interdependent world village and intensifying geopolitical competition. The contents cover four parts: Part One The End of the Era of Western Domination. The major strategic error that the West is now making is to refuse to accept this reality. The West needs to learn how to act strategically in a world where they are no longer the number 1. Part Two The Return of Asia. From the years 1 to 1820, the largest economies in the world were Asian. After 1820 and the rise of the West, however, great Asian civilizations like China and India were dominated and humiliated. The twenty-first century will see the return of Asia to the center of the world stage. Part Three The Peaceful Rise of China. The shift in the balance of power to the East has been most pronounced in the rise of China. While this rise has been peaceful, many in the West have responded with considerable concern over the influence China will have on the world order. Part Four Globalization, Multilateralism and Cooperation. Many of the world’s pressing issues, such as COVID-19 and climate change, are global issues and will require global cooperation to deal with. In short, human beings now live in a global village. States must work with each other, and we need a world order that enables and facilitates cooperation in our global village. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAs global great power competition intensifies, there is growing concern about the geopolitical future of Antarctica. This book delves into the question of how can we anticipate, prepare for, and potentially even shape that future? Now in its 60th year, the Antarctic Treaty System has been comparatively resilient and successful in governing the Antarctic region. This book assesses how our ability to make accurate predictions about the future of the Antarctic Treaty System reduces rapidly in the face of political and biophysical complexity, uncertainty, and the passage of time. This poses a critical risk for organisations making long-range decisions about their policy, strategy, and investments in the frozen south. Scenarios are useful planning tools for considering futures beyond the limits of standard prediction. This book explores how a multi-disciplinary focus of classical geopolitics might be applied systematically to create scenarios on Antarctic futures that are plausible, rigorous, and robust. This book illustrates a pragmatic, nine-step scenario development process, using the topical issue of military activities in Antarctica. Along the way, the authors make suggestions to augment current theory and practice of geopolitical scenario planning. In doing so, this book seeks to rediscover the importance of a classical (primarily state-centric) lens on Antarctic geopolitics, which in recent decades has been overshadowed by more critical perspectives. This book is written for anyone with an interest in the rigorous assessment of geopolitical futures - in Antarctica and beyond.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- History of Antarctic territorial claims and spatial contestation.- Scenario analysis and the limits of prediction.- Objectives, approaches and techniques.- Antarctic geopolitics: Background.- Militarisation of Antarctica.- Antarctic militarisation: Scenario analysis.- Antarctic militarisation: Five scenarios.- Scenario analysis and the classical view of geopolitics.- Conclusion.

Book SynopsisHow does the Iraq War affect the future world order? What kinds of problems has this war brought about, and what is needed to remedy these problems, so as to reconstruct an order in Iraq and beyond? The present volume is a collection of essays exploring these issues, written by leading scholars in their respective fields. Importantly, the Iraq War has caused numerous long-term security and economic problems in Iraq (Chapter 1) and in the Middle East (Chapter 2). In addition, this war represents a failure of the Western liberals' project of establishing a liberal market democracy, and these liberals are likely to repeat the same error elsewhere in the future (Chapter 3). Moreover, the war underlines the crisis in global governance today, but the idea of reforming the United Nations has some serious limitations (Chapter 4). With regard to the issue of terrorism, “Al-Qaeda in Iraq” has been operating in the field for some time, and thus Iraq will likely remain an important global center of terrorism in the foreseeable future (Chapter 5).Table of ContentsIntroduction (H Katsumata); The Future of Iraq (E Herring); Regional Order in the Middle East (L Fawcett); Just Another Liberal War? Book SynopsisIt is not only the beginning of 2020 but also the opening of a new decade. Many important issues impacting India as a nation a decade earlier will develop at an accelerated pace in this decade and change our politics, economy and society dramatically. We need to think about how to survive in the fast changing global environment in which ethereal assets like data and ideas are likely to carry more power than hard assets. India will continue to face a complex set of challenges to its national security in the next decade. Without mitigating its security challenges and investing in human capital, India cannot hope to become a global power with innovative technological capability. Having been through several conflicts and crises, there is a growing recognition that India needs a robust national security system. It is therefore important now to imagine 2030. We need to think about what kinds of security challenges India will face and what kind of solutions can emerge in the future. This collection of essays analyses the contemporary security situation and evaluates possible alternative scenarios for the future for implementing India`s national security policy. Drawing upon the expertise of some leading practitioners and scholars in the field, the volume offers a broad array of timely and relevant analysis of an evolving and uncertain security environment to provide the reader with an informed and balanced overview of India`s national security.

Book SynopsisThe world has changed. Rather than a clash of civilisations, the West now faces revolts from the margins, driven by widening economic divisions, rising global elites and dangerous environmental constraints. The emergence of global terrorist movements such as ISIS is indicative of a growing threat for which traditional military responses are simply not fit for purpose. At a time when the world adjusts to new international leadership - from Trump in the US to Macron in France - and as the balance of power starts to shift away from the West, this updated edition of Paul Rogers' acclaimed book looks at the new challenges facing global security, and how we might start to address them.Trade Review'important and thought-provoking' - The Guardian, 'The catastrophe of the so-called 'war on terror' exposed in brilliant detail by the towering intellect of Prof. Paul Rogers.' --Owen Jones, 'A masterly summary of a debate that we are emphatically not having, but which we certainly should.' -- Michael Clarke, Former Director General, Royal United Services Institute, 'A clear and authoritative account of what is really going on and how the conventional wisdom on security needs an urgent rethink. Bringing together expertise in IR theory and keen political acumen, Rumbles of Thunder challenges conventional wisdom on the likelihood of war between the United States and China.Trade ReviewIn this powerful book, Steve Chan debunks power transition theory that has framed the U.S.-China rivalry. With an unflinching and well-grounded critique of the key propositions that have informed policy debates in both countries, this book will force us to see U.S.-China competition in a different light. -- Yong Deng, author of China’s Strategic Opportunity: Change and Revisionism in Chinese Foreign PolicyAs Steve Chan eloquently argues in this book, recent power shifts have inclined Beijing and Washington to adjust their foreign policies, causing a deterioration in their bilateral relations. At a time of intensifying U.S.-China competition in world affairs, Rumbles of Thunder provides an essential logic to understand this rivalry. -- Weixing Hu, University of MacauChallenging many dominant theories about U.S.-China relations, including in particular the “Thucydides Trap” narrative, Steve Chan’s Rumbles of Thunder offers a nuanced and insightful assessment of both the roots of U.S.-China rivalry and the prospects for future conflict between the two powers. -- Scott Kastner, author of War and Peace in the Taiwan StraitA culmination of his decade-long research, Steve Chan’s book challenges the rhetoric about an impending U.S.-China power transition that contributes to misperception and abets a self-fulfilling prophecy of a coming war. A must-read for students of international relations. -- Ren Xiao, Fudan UniversitySteve Chan has written an insightful book on power shifts and the likelihood of war between the United States and China. Rumbles of Thunder challenges the conventional wisdom that exclusively prioritizes structural factors and brings back human agency and domestic politics in explaining great power conflicts. -- Ketian Zhang, George Mason UniversityRumbles of Thunder makes several remarkable contributions to the literature on Sino-American relations. It challenges the prevailing pessimistic view of the Thucydides trap, creatively elaborates on three concepts of power and uses them to explain the power dynamics of U.S.-China relations, and offers nuanced and sophisticated analyses of the Taiwan issue. -- Kai He, author of China’s Crisis Behavior: Political Survival and Foreign PolicyTable of ContentsIntroduction1. Book SynopsisThe US government has long sought investment opportunities for US companies in developing countries. But the results have been mixed: firms have preferred to invest in the industrial world and developing-world leaders have not always welcomed foreign investment. Violence and the presence of natural resources have also hindered foreign development.Trade ReviewEthan Kapstein provides us an historical panorama of how, in the postwar period, the US sought to establish not only a rule-based system but one built on private enterprise. As it turns out, the motivation was not just the narrowly self-interested reason of advancing the interests of American multinationals, but had deeper ideological roots. Kapstein provides fresh insights into a neglected topic: the liberal order narrative. -- Stephan Haggard, University of California, San DiegoEthan Kapstein has drawn on his rare combination of academic expertise and professional experience to craft a wide-ranging and provocative analysis of the sources, implementation, and impact of US government efforts to promote capitalism abroad. The lessons he draws about the effectiveness of US foreign aid policies will help scholars and policymakers think more historically and creatively about the means and ends of efforts to advance the national interest by reshaping the world. -- David S. Painter, Georgetown UniversityForeign direct investment by the United States to promote private enterprise has often been overlooked by scholars exploring the variety of competing approaches to promote economic growth and change around the world. Kapstein draws out the longer history of such efforts, highlighting one underappreciated segment of the complex global story of international development. -- David Ekbladh, Tufts UniversityKapstein highlights an important but neglected component to US strategy during the Cold War: encouraging private enterprise around the world to spread capitalism and economic development. Combining personal knowledge and research that ranges from East Asia to Latin America, he brings the story up to date and with lessons for the globalization challenges of today. -- Douglas Irwin, Dartmouth CollegeA very interesting and enjoyable read, gaining much from the author’s personal practical experience. -- Diane Coyle * Enlightened Economist *

Book SynopsisChinese Asianism analyzes Chinese views of East Asian solidarity in light of Chinese nationalism and Sino–Japanese relations. Advocates of Asianism packaged Asia for their own agendas, often by translating and interpreting Japanese perspectives. As China now plays a central role in East Asian development, Asianism is once again of great importance.Trade ReviewIn the twenty-first century, we cannot think about the future of Asianism without turning to the rise of China. Craig A. Smith’s book makes a serious contribution by exploring the genealogy of Chinese Asianism…His book provides an excellent history of Asianism up to World War II, which is important for understanding attempts to revise Asianism by scholars such as Takeuchi Yoshimi in the postwar period, and helps us to understand the resurgence of China-centered narratives of Asia in the present. -- Viren Murthy * The China Journal *The first English-language monograph focusing on Asianist conceptions held by Chinese thinkers, writers and politicians…Smith’s book makes an important contribution to our understanding of how Asianism influenced China–Japan relations in the first half of the 20th century…Highly recommended to everyone interested in Chinese intellectual and political history, China–Japan and China–Asia relations. -- Torsten Weber * China Quarterly *The biggest contribution of Dr. Smith’s new book, Chinese Asianism, 1894–1945, is treating Asianism as a product of the dialogue between Chinese and Japanese intellectuals against the backdrop of the global trend of internationalism and pan movements…The author meets the challenge of presenting a balanced picture of an intellectual movement which had once involved many prominent politicians and intellectuals of the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century but which has been stigmatized since the end of World War II due to its association with Japanese imperialism. -- Yue Due * China Review International *

Book SynopsisTrade Review"One of 20 essential books about the Middle East, compiled by the Middle Eastern Studies community at Anhui University in central China""[A] lucid exposition of the Islamic Republic’s two main ideological and policy axes: the jihadists, embodied by the country’s founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and the ijtihadists, the more flexible and rational pragmatists, two of whom, Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani, have been elected president."---John Waterbury, Foreign Affairs"A welcome and discerning primer. . . . It should be studied carefully by all students of Middle Eastern politics and especially by diplomats, military leaders, and political decision-makers who wish to rectify or avoid repeating the current flawed policies toward the Islamic Republic of Iran."---Robert L. Tignor, Michigan War Studies Review"Scholarly portrait of a nation that resists easy categorization—and containment. . . . Useful reading for students of contemporary geopolitics, in which Iran has proven a constant, often destabilizing presence." * Kirkus *"Saikal . . . offers a critical but not unsympathetic perspective on the ‘unique and multi-dimensional, and at times tragic, theopolitical story’ of Iran. . . . Saikal’s convincing bottom line is that open confrontation with Iran is unwise and unlikely to be productive, whereas a policy of careful engagement, while risky, could enable progress on the margins. The author’s careful, analytic approach privileges trade statistics and governmental communiqués over stories of human interest; as such, this is for readers who seek an understanding of strategic considerations, rather than a sense of what daily life is like for the Iranian population." * Publishers Weekly *"Iran Rising: The Survival and Future of the Islamic Republic is a clearly written, well-researched, and scholarly work that will be of benefit to anyone with a genuine interest in this strong and influential nation."---Robert Fantina, New York Journal of Books"Iran Rising is well written, laid out in a logical format, and well sourced with citations. It is an excellent primer on the country of Iran and offers a look behind the curtain on how the Iranian government is organized and administered. The book also illustrates the multifaceted nature of the elements of national power and that nothing is ever as simple as it seems. I highly recommend this book for all military and nonmilitary audiences because of its insight into one of the lesser understood countries that has been a thorn in the side of the United States for over forty years."---George Hodge, Military Review

Presented without theoretical encumbrance or jargon, A World of Struggle is a straightforward but sophisticated account. . . . The superlative book wins its distinction not only because it constructs a novel theory but also because it applies that theory to how the globe as a whole is ruled--something no one in the canon of social theory has really done."---Samuel Moyn, Harvard Law Review"Accounts of global politics are usually organized around time periods of settled order, during which powerful states laid down rules and established institutions. In this illuminating study, Kennedy tells a different story, in which contemporary international relations play out as a continuous struggle between technocratic elites around the world, in which nothing is ever settled and everything is negotiable."---G. John Ikenberry, Foreign Affairs"A profound and arresting account of how globalization is constructed by experts who obfuscate their own role. . . . It is surely worth reading to understand yesterday's world--and very likely tomorrow’s as well."---Tom Ginsburg, American Journal of International Law"Given the tendency of hidden background decisions and dominant scripts to reproduce inequality and injustice, what role should expertise play? World of Struggle argues less for abandonment than reimagination. In this work, Kennedy continues his long-term project of uncovering the hidden implications of multiple mundane “expert” decisions that shape a paradoxical world: one both unstable and unshakable. Here, fi nally, is the foundational ambition of World of Struggle and its challenge to readers: to undo the hegemony of common sense, to unlearn the boundaries of reason, to unsettle what has seemingly been seamlessly resolved, to untell the familiar stories of binaries and boundaries, to uncover the struggles that expertise obscures, and thus to unleash the possibility of remaking the world."---Zinaida Miller, Journal of Legal Education

Business History ReviewBetween 1973 and 1980, the cost of crude oil rose suddenly and dramatically, precipitating convulsions in international politics. Conventional wisdom holds that international capital markets adjusted automatically and remarkably well: enormous amounts of money flowed into oil-rich states, and efficient markets then placed that new money in cash-poor Third World economies.David Spiro has followed the money trail, and the story he tells contradicts the accepted beliefs. Most of the sudden Trade ReviewThe book provides a good panorama of the global situation after OPEC increased the price of oil in the early 1970s. No previous knowledge of the issue is required, as it is very well explained and the book is well organized. 7 in stock

Book SynopsisHow celebrity strategic partnerships are disrupting humanitarian space Can a celebrity be a “disrupter,” promoting strategic partnerships to bring new ideas and funding to revitalize the development field—or are celebrities just charismatic ambassadors for big business? Examining the role of the rich and famous in development and humanitarianism, Batman Saves the Congo argues that celebrities do both, and that understanding why and how yields insight into the realities of neoliberal development. In 2010, entertainer Ben Affleck, known for his superhero performance as Batman, launched the Eastern Congo Initiative to bring a new approach to the region’s development. This case study is central to Batman Saves the Congo. Affleck’s organization operates with special access, diversified funding, and significant support of elites within political, philanthropic, development, and humanitarian circuits. This sets it apart from other development organizations. With his convening power, Affleck has built partnerships with those inside and outside development, staking bipartisan political ground that is neither charity nor aid but “good business.” Such visible and recognizable celebrity humanitarians are occupying the public domain yet not engaging meaningfully with any public, argues Batman Saves the Congo. They are an unruly bunch of new players in development who amplify business solutions. As elite political participants, celebrities shape development practices through strategic partnerships that are both an innovative way to raise awareness and funding for neglected causes and a troubling trend of unaccountable elite leadership in North–South relations. Batman Saves the Congo helps illuminate the power of celebritized business solutions and the development contexts they create. Trade Review "This is an exciting, original, and fascinating book. It’s important not just for what it reveals—the Janus-faced, contradiction-laden nature of celebrity development politics—but for how this work was done. Batman Saves the Congo sets the standard for following high-profile development interventions from the privileged boardrooms where they are conceived to the coffee fields they seek to support. It’s a triumph."—Dan Brockington, author of Celebrity Advocacy and International Development "This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking contribution to current debates on celebrity activism in the humanitarian sector. Using Ben Affleck’s intervention in the Congo, the book offers a razor-sharp analysis of the inner workings of celebrity strategic partnerships as a new entrepreneurial model of aid. More than this, it develops an important criticism of humanitarianism and its entanglement with corporate and entertainment logics that, despite good intentions, work to hide colonial legacies behind the glamour of celebrity stardom."—Lilie Chouliaraki, author of The Ironic Spectator: Solidarity in the Age of Post-Humanitarianism "Thoroughly researched and often laugh-out-loud funny, Batman Saves the Congo is a critically important look at a growing and under-examined — and frequently absurd — segment of the aid industry. "—Washington Post "This is a well-written, entertaining study that deserves a wide audience among readers interested in celebrity humanitarianism and the international politics of development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo."—CHOICE "The book Batman Saves the Congo is deeply researched, utilises a brilliant mix of methods of inquiry, and exposes a complex web of actors engaged in development efforts in the Congo."—Journal of Humanitarian Affairs Table of ContentsContentsAbbreviationsIntroduction: Batman Saves the Congo1. • Nonhuman Humanitarians: Animal Interventions in

University of Minnesota Press Nonhuman Humanitarians: Animal Interventions in

Book SynopsisExamining the appearance of nonhuman animals laboring alongside humans in humanitarian operations Both critical and mainstream scholarly work on humanitarianism have largely been framed from anthropocentric perspectives highlighting humanity as the rationale for providing care to others. In Nonhuman Humanitarians, Benjamin Meiches explores the role of animals laboring alongside humans in humanitarian operations, generating new ethical possibilities of care in humanitarian practice.Nonhuman Humanitarians examines how these animals not only improve specific practices of humanitarian aid but have started to transform the basic tenets of humanitarianism. Analyzing case studies of mine-clearance dogs, milk-producing cows and goats, and disease-identifying rats, Nonhuman Humanitarians ultimately argues that nonhuman animal contributions problematize foundational assumptions about the emotional and rational capacities of humanitarian actors as well as the ethical focus on human suffering that defines humanitarianism.Meiches reveals that by integrating nonhuman animals into humanitarian practice, several humanitarian organizations have effectively demonstrated that care, compassion, and creativity are creaturely rather than human and that responses to suffering and injustice do not—and cannot—stop at the boundaries of the human.Trade Review "In this incisive exploration of the ethical and political implications of nonhuman labor in humanitarian work, Benjamin Meiches raises important questions about how humanitarian practices of care and generosity may be expanded beyond the constraints of anthropocentric reason to serve a global multispecies community facing the simultaneous and intensifying threats of climate change, ecological collapse, mass extinction, and violent conflict."—Elan Abrell, author of Saving Animals: Multispecies Ecologies of Rescue and Care "For those that would dispute the relevance of the more-than-human in the study of international relations, Nonhuman Humanitarians constitutes a significant rejoinder. Benjamin Meiches’s book examines the intersection between humanitarian practice and the small, though growing, literature on the role of our fellow species in conflict situations. It has much to teach about human–nonhuman relations, the practice of humanitarianism, and the ethics of both."—Stephen Hobden, coauthor of The Emancipatory Project of Posthumanism

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn 1493, King Hans of Denmark and Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow concluded one of the earliest treaties of alliance between a Catholic European and an Orthodox Muscovite ruler. The alliance proved viable enough to generate two further treaties and an astounding fifty-plus diplomatic missions between Copenhagen and Moscow over the next thirty years. Yet little of scholarly value has been written about this unique late-medieval relationship across a divisive religious border. The book is intended to provide a solid foundation for a comprehensive study of the alliance. The author first goes over the peculiar customs and diplomatics of treating with medieval Russia, then proceeds to detail the diplomatic processes leading to each of the three Danish-Muscovite treaties. Further the surviving Danish and Muscovite treaty texts are published in a new critical edition with commentary and translations into English. And finally, the author reconstructs the missing originals of the treaties for a complete assembly of texts underlying the alliance.
