United Nations World population prospects: highlights, Key

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe United Nations population estimates and projections form a comprehensive set of demographic data to assess population trends at the global, regional and national levels. They are used in the calculation of many of the key development indicators commonly used by the United Nations system, including for more than one third of the indicators used to monitor progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2019 revision of the World Population Prospects is the twenty-sixth edition of the official United Nations population estimates and projections, which have been prepared since 1951 by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The 2019 revision presents population estimates from 1950 until the present for 235 countries or areas, which have been developed through country-specific analyses of historical demographic trends. It builds on previous revisions by incorporating additional results from the 2010 and 2020 rounds of national population censuses as well as information from vital registration and recent nationally representative household sample surveys. The 2019 revision also presents population projections to the year 2100 that reflect a range of plausible outcomes at the global, regional and country levels. These Highlights summarise key population trends described by the estimates and projections presented in World Population Prospects 2019.

Book SynopsisThis publication contains information about the licit movement of the internationally controlled narcotic drugs included in the Schedules of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. This includes information on cultivation of opiate raw materials, on extraction of alkaloids from opium, poppy straw and concentrate of poppy straw; on the manufacture of consumption, utilization, and stocks of opiates and opioids; and international global trade in narcotic drugs as well as in individual countries/territories. The publication also contains the estimated requirements of narcotic drugs for each country and territory.

Book SynopsisThis Training Guide seeks to assist States parties in meeting their obligations to respect, protect and fulfil the rights enshrined in the Convention for the Protection of all Persons against Enforced Disappearances. The Manual, which is the first part of the Training Guide, outlines the provisions of the Convention and provides useful guidance on the content and scope of the rules of procedure and the working methods of the Committee on Enforced Disappearances, as well as reporting obligations under the Convention. The publication draws on the wealth of experience acquired by the Committee over the years. It highlights practical examples on the submission of information and data under the Convention and the successful implementation of Committee's recommendations. These examples would be of use to States parties and, in particular, to those involved in the delivery of training courses on reporting to the Committee and on the implementation of the Convention. By promoting a greater understanding of the provisions of the Convention, the Training Guide aims to provide guidance and support to reporting States as to the content of reports and the implementation of recommendations. United Nations Handbook on civil registration and vital

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAcquiring knowledge of the size and characteristics of a country's population on a timely basis is a prerequisite to socioeconomic planning and informed decision making. Vital statistics and their subsequent analysis and interpretation are essential for setting targets and evaluating social and economic plans, including the monitoring of health and population intervention programmes, and the measurement of important demographic indicators of levels of living or quality of life, such as the expectation of life at birth and the infant mortality rate. Vital statistics can be produced solely from a full-functioning civil registration system as the only source able to ensure universal coverage and provide timely and continuous data. This Handbook offers background, specifications and practical examples for the improvement and/or establishment of civil registration, vital statistics and identity management systems. It presents model organizational and legal arrangements, as well as ideal descriptions, processes and protocols that are considered the gold standard

Book SynopsisAs countries worldwide are still recovering from the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine is expected to result in severe implications for the global economy. The ongoing conflict is driving up energy and commodity prices, and threatening food security in many parts of the world. The magnitude of the impact on individual countries depends on the composition of their economies, and their trade and financial links with the two countries in conflict. The gross domestic product of the Arab region is expected to grow by 5.18 per cent in 2022 if the conflict ends by June 2022 (0.02 percentage point lower than the pre-crisis projections), and by 4.78 per cent if the conflict endures longer (0.42 percentage point lower than the pre-crisis projections - an estimated loss of around $11 billion). As heavy oil exporters, the Gulf Cooperation Council economies will benefit from the recovery in oil markets that started in 2021, and will grow at their fastest pace since 2014. These countries will also profit from oil price hikes caused by the war in Ukraine. All other Arab countries are expected to grow at a slower pace than pre-crisis projections. In addition to higher energy prices, these countries also face increasing food security concerns as a result of the economic sanctions on the Russian Federation, and disruptions to supply chains caused by military activities. Some will also face a decline in official development assistance

  • State of commodity dependence 2023

United Nations State of commodity dependence 2023

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA country is export commodity-dependent (from now on 'commodity dependent') when its exports are heavily concentrated on primary commodities. The source of commodity dependence can be linked to different persistent or even structural conditions of a country such as its resource endowment and factor composition, institutionality, geographic situation, history and others. In this document, we follow past UNCTAD practice by considering UNCTAD member States to be commodity dependent if more than 60 per cent of its merchandise export value comes from commodities. It is important to monitor and analyze the evolution of commodity dependence, as the latter can have negative implications for a country's welfare and development. This document is divided into two parts. The first one is dedicated to identifying and characterizing commodity-dependent countries, as well as discussing the recent evolution of commodity prices, commodity export value and the net asset position of these countries. The second part is dedicated to country-specific commodity dependence profiles that also include important economic and social statistics
