Book SynopsisAn urgent examination of how the political, economic and social volatility in Europe will affect the world.Trade Review"A compelling and urgent alert that Europe’s creation of a peaceful community in place of a warring continent, may be unraveling. Great Britain is leaving. Other EU members are suffering from political and economic stresses and the burden of refugees fleeing conflicts and migrants escaping poverty. For the United States, a diminished Europe creates an alarming risk." -- James Hoge, Senior Advisor, Teneo Intelligence"This is the best book I've read on the recent turmoil sweeping through Europe--excellent reporting, beautifully written and sensibly, carefully analyzed. Everything that I would expect from a journalist/scholar like Bill Drozdiak." -- Marvin Kalb, Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice, Emeritus, Harvard University"Europeans and Americans alike would benefit from heeding Drozdiak’s warning: That European unification may go into reverse and unravel due to blinkered nationalism on both sides of the Atlantic." -- Politico.eu"A veteran foreign correspondent views Europe’s current dilemmas and power struggles through a series of chapters written from the key capitals, including Berlin, Moscow and London." -- Gideon Rachman, Politics Top picks of 2017 - Financial Times"... Taylor & Francis Ltd The European Union
Book SynopsisIn the fifty or so years since the Treaty of Rome, the European Union has evolved far beyond the scope of any other comparable entity. The EU is now a unique model of international cooperation and integration, and its reach extends into almost every sphere of the lives of its half a billion citizens. As well as the establishment of a single market, the Union has its own currency, is developing a foreign policy, and has a growing role in justice and cultural matters.Scholarly work on the European Union has undergone a similarly rapid evolution. For example, with the major expansions of the Union since the end of the Cold War, there has been a huge growth in the range and depth of research into the many challenges of integration. As serious thinking about and around this and other crucial aspects of the European Union continues to flourish and develop, this new title in Routledgeâs acclaimed Critical Concepts in Political Science series meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of the subjectâs vast literature and the continuing explosion in research output. Edited by Simon Usherwood, a leading EU scholar, it is a five-volume collection of foundational and cutting-edge contributions. The first volume in the collection (âThe Development of the European Unionâ) assembles the key work on the historical evolution of the European Union from the end of the Second World War to the present day. Even before the Constitutional Treaty proposed in 2004, there was much academic and political discussion about the degree and manner to which the EU transcended traditional political units and the materials gathered in Volume II (âThe Organization of the European Union and the Constitutional Turnâ) explore the nature of the Union at this most fundamental level. The third volume in the collection (âThe Institutions of the European Unionâ) collects the most important research on the institutional structure of the EU. Here, the focus is on the dynamic processes at work within institutions and the models of understanding that academics have developed. Volume IV (âMember States as Actors in the European Unionâ), meanwhile, brings together the best work on particular member states, considering, for example, why certain states have remained dominant actors within the Union, despite the scope and depth of EU expansion. In addition, the processes and outcomes which underpin this dominanceâsuch as europeanisationâare also explored. The final volume in the collection (âCitizens as Actors in the European Unionâ) concentrates on a very particular feature of the Union: the role of individual citizens. The material gathered here probes issues such as the perceived âdemocratic deficitâ in the Union.Fully indexed and with comprehensive introductions to each thematic part, newly written by the editor, which place the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, The European Union is an essential work of reference. It is destined to be valued by political science scholars and researchersâas well as by EU specialists and policy-makersâas a vital one-stop research tool.

Cambridge University Press The Constitution of Europe Do the New Clothes Have An Emperor And Other Essays on European Integration
Joseph Weiler presents essays written during the 1990s on issues related to European constitutional law. In a series of highly accessible discussions concerning the legal framework of the European Communities and the European Union, Professor Weiler describes the gradual strengthening of transnational European institutions at the expense of national legislators. Although individuals as legal consumers have been empowered by Community law, he writes, this has been at the expense of their rights as citizens. The Constitution of Europe thus provides from a legal perspective a balanced and authoritative critique of the attractions and demerits of the goal of European integration.

Faber & Faber A Kidnapped West
Book SynopsisA provocative and rousing insight into European politics from one of the world's greatest writers. 'One of his most powerful works.' Financial Times'A pan-European intellectual force.' TimesIn a moment of historic peril and uncertainty in mainland Europe, Milan Kundera makes the case for Central Europe as the nucleus of European values and as a lightning rod for its potential dangers. For the countries that make up this region where democracy is under continued threat from Russian oppression, language and culture play an active role in affirming national identity. And each of these countries - Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia - has been historically overlooked by the major powers of Western Europe. But Kundera cautions that this blindness puts Europe's cultural and political independence at risk, a warning that feels increasingly relevant to our current moment, and our future.

Harvard University Press The Colonial Politics of Global Health
Book SynopsisJessica Lynne Pearson explores the collision between imperial and international visions of health and development in French Africa as postwar decolonization movements gained strength. The consequences of putting politics above public health continue to play out in constraints placed on international health organizations half a century later.Trade ReviewPearson’s deeply researched and elegantly written book demonstrates that international organizations played a defining role in reshaping empire in the postwar period. Her work compellingly argues that the United Nations and the World Health Organization provided templates for universal rights and health for all, even colonial subjects. The Colonial Politics of Global Health will be an invaluable addition to our understanding of the French Empire, decolonization, and global health initiatives. -- Jennifer Johnson, Brown UniversityA smart, persuasive study of one of the most influential chapters in the history of twentieth-century Africa. This impressive work poses an intriguing question: how did imperial powers in sub-Saharan Africa interact with new international humanitarian organizations providing oversight of colonial governance after World War II? Pearson is to be commended for taking on such a challenging topic and for telling a fascinating, human story in such an accessible way. -- Alice L. Conklin, The Ohio State UniversityAn important, thought-provoking book that uses global health as a prism through which to understand tensions between colonial powers and international organizations like the World Health Organization in late colonial Africa. Pearson skillfully shows how decolonization converged with a wide array of attempts to stem disease made by French doctors, colonial officials, and world health representatives in Africa. -- Nancy Rose Hunt, University of Michigan[A] probing account…Focusing on the area of public health, Pearson shows that France sought to reap the benefits of the World Health Organization’s operations in Africa, even as it pursued its own health-care policies in its colonies. France’s efforts, Pearson argues, succeeded in maintaining French influence over UN policies in West Africa even after the country’s former colonies had won their independence. -- Nicolas van de Walle * Foreign Affairs *Shows how the World Health Organization’s origins and development in Africa and the politics of the postwar period of decolonization were intimately intertwined. -- Laura Jane McGough * Bulletin of the History of Medicine *

Pluto Press The World Bank
Book SynopsisAuthoritative, critical history and analysis of the World Bank from its founding to the present dayTrade Review'Superior … a broad ranging guide that explains the global power structure over the last eight decades. The history of the World Bank and its frequent support of dictatorships in the Global South clarifies the nexus between high finance and power politics.' -- Carlos Marichal, El Colegio de México'The World Bank's many critics usually urge institutional redemption through reforms. In this harsh and thorough indictment, Eric Toussaint blasts those hopes. Covering the history of the Bank from its early days as a prop to European colonialism through the Rwandan genocide, the Washington Consensus and the Iraq war, he argues that the Bank is incorrigible and should, therefore, be abolished. Read and judge for yourselves.' -- James K. Galbraith, author, 'Welcome to the Poisoned Chalice: The Destruction of Greece and the Future of Europe''The record of lending to authoritarian regimes … invites fresh thinking on the need to streamline human rights considerations into development lending. Recommended reading to get a different view of the Bretton Woods institutions.' -- Andrés Solimano, founder, International Center for Globalization and Development'Eric Toussaint's book could not be more opportune as the world enters a dangerous period of potential geopolitical conflict. Toussaint exposes, with chapter and verse, the role of the World Bank (and other 'Bretton Woods institutions) as tools for the financial control of the world - in particular, the exploitation of the Global South through the manipulation of debt. The World Bank is found not to be a great institution to reduce global poverty, but on the contrary, to perpetuate it.' -- Michael Roberts, Economist and co-author of 'Capitalism in the 21st Century''Éric Toussaint's detailed and powerful indictment of the World Bank emerges at a vital time. It should be read by all who want to challenge domination and exploitation and contribute to the struggle for global justice.' -- 'Counterfire'Table of ContentsForeword Terminology: South/North – Developing/Developed. Book SynopsisToday Europe finds itself in a crisis that casts a dark shadow over an entire generation. The seriousness of the crisis stems from one core political contradiction at the heart of the European project: namely, that what urgently needs to be done is also extremely unpopular and therefore virtually impossible to do democratically.Trade Review"The title of his book says it all: Europe finds itself in a trap of its own making. Offe has no easy answers as to how the continent might escape. But his 130-page essay is a model of analytical clarity and should be required reading for anyone who wants to grasp the core issues of the crisis—and eschew simple slogans and facile apportionment of blame to single nations (whether Germany or Greece)."Current History"This is a strangely heart-warming book. While Claus Offe analyses the weaknesses and failures of European integration with ruthless precision, he also reminds us powerfully of the values of the European ideal, and shows how we could come closer to realising them - if only political leaders had the will and tenacity to do so. In the current climate of Europhobia, this is the nearest thing to realistic optimism that we are likely to get."Colin Crouch, University of Warwick"Claus Offe has written a passionate, probing, and deeply perturbing book that both excoriates the European Union and provides a glimpse of hope in the struggle for a social Europe."Gary Marks, UNC-Chapel Hill and RVU Amsterdam"After so many years without a resolution, it is hard to feel hopeful about the euro crisis. If there are grounds for hope they lie in this volume. In it Claus Offe describes how the citizens of Europe, and of Germany in particular, frame the crisis. He explains how that framing defines the range of feasible policy options. Offe shows how it is in the capacity of those citizens and their leaders -- of European society, in other words -- to modify that framing in ways that open the door to a more constructive policy response. Offe's careful analysis deserves a wide audience. If it receives one, Europe will be a better place."Barry Eichengreen, University of California, Berkeley"At the core of this book is the proposition that, though the Euro was a mistake, its undoing would be a greater mistake. Around this insight, Offe describes the logic of the economic, institutional, political and cultural traps that have been sprung on European polities. The great merit of this book is that it poses the fundamental question implicit in any attempt to escape such traps: who is to be the agent of change? No one reading this book will think that this question has an easy answer; they will realise that an answer is desperately called for."Albert Weale, University College London ‘Europe Entrapped brilliantly summarizes the huge complexity of the EU that hinders its effective crisis management, and comes with a passionate call for more material solidarity among EU citizens... Offe contributes a most welcome counterweight to all the short and simple arguments attributing blame for the crisis to a small group of people, persons, or institutions. For everyone interested in the Euro crisis and annoyed or confused by the barrage of media coverage on it, I highly recommend this book.’International Studies Review‘Offe provides a lucid explanation of the Eurozone crisis and how Europeans should reform their institutions. While assembling the intellectual tools to dissect this predicament, he paints a full picture of the challenges facing welfare states under globalization… The silver lining of this book is that it is partisan in the best possible way: provocative but not distorting, critical but not irascible. Most of all: its political rallying cry to citizens, namely that the Europe we have is flawed and the one we stand to gain is worth fighting for, is both urgent and true.’ Constellations‘This is an important read for any Europhile who thinks that anything economically or socially rational must also be politically realistic.’ Times Higher EducationTable of ContentsAbbreviations vi Preface vii Introduction 1 1 Democratic Capitalism and the European Union 6 2 The Nature of the Crisis 16 3 Growth, Debt, and Doom Loops 32 4 No Return to Square One 48 5 In Search of Political Agency 56 6 Finalitées: Bases of Identification with European Integration as a Political Project 61 7 The Configuration of Political Forces and Preferences 81 8 Germany’s Leadership Role for Europe: A Non-Starter 90 9 “Thin” Citizenship: The Ugly Face of the EU System of Rule 109 10 Redistribution Across State Borders and Social Divides 120 References 131

Taylor & Francis Ltd Governing Global Trade International Institutions
Book SynopsisCohn''s topic of global trade is of enormous and proliferating interest. He provides a good background from 1945 to the present and on core contemporary themes such as civil society participation and the domesticisation of the trade agenda. Whilst there is a wealth of literature on policy-oriented aspects such as negotiating rounds, there are few that provide the careful, comprehensive historical overview that this work offers and none that do so with reference to international institutions such as the G7, Quad, OECD, and UNCTAD as well as the WTO in global trade governance. This seminal work has been awarded the British Columbia Political Science Association Weller Prize for 2003. Cohn''s political science background will appeal directly to a university audience and a broader public policy market. It is also suitable for those interested in trade in the cognates of economics and law. This work''s theoretical framework embraces and synthesises the major approaches in the field ofTrade ReviewWinner of the British Columbia Political Science Association Weller Prize for the best book published by a BC political scientist in 2001-2002 'Governing Global Trade by Theodore Cohn fills an important gap in the literature on international trade policy. It provides an invaluable, systemic study of how the plurilateral organisations (such as the OECD, G7/8, the Quad and bodies representing developing country interests) have shaped the evolution of trade policy from the beginnings of the GATT through to the current day. The book provides an important insight into the multi-layered nature of international trade negotiation that has been often overlooked in works that focus on the World Trade Organisation alone.' Stephen Woolcock, International Relations Department, London School of Economics and Political Science ’Recommended. General readers and upper-division undergraduate and graduate students of international trade and economic history.’ Choice 'Anyone interested in the post-1945 history of the international trade system and its current institutional problems will find this book a useful addition to the burgeoning trade policy literature. Cohn provides a comprehensive and historically rich account...' International Affairs 'The book is well researched and very rich in detail. Also, it is comprehensive, spanning the history of half a century of multilateral trade negotiations. It fills an important gap in the literature concerning institutional linkages among various formal and informal institutions on trade...it should be read by anyone interested in the politics of the global trade regime.' Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Noncitizen Power
Book SynopsisTendayi Bloom is Associate Professor in Politics and International Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK. She is author of Noncitizenism: Recognising Noncitizen Capabilities in a World of Citizens (2018).Trade ReviewThis insightful book puts the spotlight on those people who live out their lives despite an international system that benefits others. In bringing such voices to the foreground, Bloom has produced a valuable addition to the literature on the global politics of migration that demonstrates how institutional structures are constructed, and how they may be challenged. Written in an accessible and clear manner, Noncitizen Power is essential reading for anyone interested in global migration governance. -- Gerasimos Tsourapas, University of Glasgow, UKThis is a brilliant critique of how citizen-state relations usurp all relations between states and individuals in liberal political thought. An entire category – noncitizens – and their relations with the state remain subordinate as noncitizens wanting to become citizens. Yet, noncitizens often make rights claims without wanting to become citizens, and, as Bloom shows, with profound consequences. -- Engin Isin, Queen Mary University of London, UKTendayi Bloom’s book makes an important and original contribution to our understanding of the multi-scalar politics of migration through the unique lens of noncitizens. It brings to the fore the agency of those migrants and non-migrants alike whose lives and politics develop within and despite the institutions that govern them, and calls for these voices, experiences and perspectives to be brought into discussions of global migration governance. -- Nando Sigona, University of Birmingham, UKBloom has written an original and challenging book which places the noncitizen rather than the citizen at the centre of our understanding of the global order of things. With a combination of theoretical insight and practical proposals, the book explores how the power and knowledge of the noncitizen can be brought to bear on key questions such as international migration, and shows how crucial this power and knowledge is to changing the international system so that all people, whatever their status, have a recognised place within it. -- Phillip Cole, University of the West of England, UKTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface Introduction 1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC From Women to the World
Book SynopsisAn Independent Book of the MonthFeatured in Vogue Arabia Featured by Vanity Fair Acclaimed writer Elif Shafak writes a letter to Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand after the Christchurch attack. Actress Yasmine AlMassri pens a poem about war for her mother. Activist and TV presenter June Sarpong addresses designer Diane Von Furstenberg. These are a few of the moving and insightful letters that make up From Women to the World, a book by journalist, author and executive Elizabeth Filippouli, which brings together letters from a global group of accomplished women - politicians, royalty, actors, writers, activists and more every one addressed to a woman who means something to each of them. The results are extraordinary, heartfelt letters to historical figures, mentors, family members or inspiring ordinary people. Each is based on these women''s personal histories and experiences, drawing attention to social issues such as homelessness, war, LGBTrade ReviewPoignant. * The Independent *Trailblazing female politicians, royals, actors and writers from around the world write letters to historical figures, famous women, family members and mentors, sharing their heartfelt personal experiences while drawing attention to pressing social issues that fuel their activism… Through their letters they reflect on their lives, careers, relationships, successes and challenges, and although many highlight the various trials and tribulations this generation of Arab women has had to endure and overcome, the overall message is one of activism and optimism for the future. * The National *In this collection of writings from women across the world, letter-writing is put to work to declare women's solidarity, strength and resolve… A book to delve into when in need of wise counsel. * The Morning Star *A book like this… is as close as possible to a bouquet of roses… each one [letter] is special and distinctive and suffused with a different fragrance. Without a doubt every reader will find.. [within them] a dose of love, hope and inspiration. * Asharq-Al-Awsat *Powerful and insightful letters from a global group of accomplished women… From Women to the World is an attempt by these incredible, outspoken, and inspiring women to lend us their hands, through their experiences, to bring us along to a new century of change. * The New Arab *Elizabeth Filippouli’s book, From Women to the World, is profoundly moving. A series of letters written by women, to the women who changed their lives, it is in itself likely to change the lives of the many women who are destined to read it. Among the many powerful and incisive stories, the letter written by Muna AbuSulayman to Margaret Garner, the enslaved woman attempting to escape to freedom, who murdered her daughter rather than see her return to captivity, induced me to tears. I will be buying it for my daughter and my mother. This is not a book to miss. * Linda Duberley, Writer and Broadcaster *Living in the 21st century, we should not be forced to question ourselves about gender equality and gender equivalence. We all have to remain vigilant not to lose the giant steps forward that were made in earlier centuries to give the woman the place she rightfully deserves as a human being, a free individual, possessor of her own body, entitled to being single, a wife, a mother, a CEO, a preacher or whatever she decides to become or to be. No other restrictions applied then those she decides to endorse. The hard work continues. The beauty of those letters lie in their fragility toward others and in their strength to become and to be at the same time. This book is a must read! * Sir Dirk Brossé, Conductor/Composer, Music Director The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia *From Women to the World is a remarkable book reflecting the sentiments of women from across the world in moving tributes to those they love and respect. These exceptional people, who have often achieved success against the odds, share values, passion, and a mutual, powerful faith in the way women can change the world. Each beautifully crafted letter tells a story, touching on injustice, prejudice, oppression, and inequality, but also highlighting the courage, determination, and self-belief that women draw on to try and achieve their rightful place in male dominated societies. It is both a literary gem and a slice of history. This is a tremendous book.. * Richard Peel, Communications Strategist *From Women to the World features missives from women to the women who inspired and sustained them. It is a work of profound reflection through and about relationships. Elizabeth Filippouli makes these letters a sort of 'collective voice' of what is common to these women, highly varied in specifics and yet linked by shared concern and commitments. This volume opens up the power of relationships and gives access to these private voices to all of us. It is indeed 'from women to the world'. * Professor Marc Ventresca, Said Business School University of Oxford *From Women to the World is a thought-provoking, deeply inspirational, and beautifully compiled tribute to women's leadership. I commend Elizabeth for this important and timeless contribution to the growing body of scholarship and literature that honours the unlimited potential and unparalleled capacity of women’s leadership, and highlights its holistic impact on economies, on societies, and whole communities. * Haifa Al Kaylani, President & Founder, The Arab International Women’s Forum *From Women to the World is a thought-provoking and at times difficult read. In this carefully curated series of letters, Elizabeth Filippouli has, in her own words, 'handed over a baton'. Together we have the power to change society and make it fairer for all. To all who contributed: thank you. To my fellow readers: now is the time - we move forward together. * Sarah Waddington, Chart.PR FCIPR FPRCA MIOD. Managing Director, Astute.Work Founder, #FuturePRoof *This is a gem of a book. * Vicky Pryce. Economist/Author of ‘Women vs Capitalism’ *I could say that From Women to the World is a role model female platform. It is a dialogue between women that inspires, thrills, touches the souls and feelings of countless readers that surely this spectacular book will have. Thank you, Elizabeth Filippouli and all the brave and valuable women authors of these letters, for let us share their fights, pains, and victories. * Rosalía Arteaga Serrano, Former President of the Republic of Ecuador *Too often we focus on metrics and measurements, yet it is stories and relationships that lead to real, long lasting transformation. These stories from around the world will have an impact on the reader as they did on those who feature in them. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC From Women to the World
Book SynopsisElizabeth Filippouli is a journalist, activist and social entrepreneur. She is Founder of Global Thinkers Forum (GTF) an independent civil society agency incubated at the University of Oxford, working to promote values-based decision making and supporting women and youth. The organisation launched Athena40 - a family of diverse initiatives that advance women's leadership by creating opportunities for women to be recognized for their work and connecting them with peers from around the world. Elizabeth has worked as investigative journalist and news anchor with the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, CNN International and Al Jazeera English. She serves on the Global Advisory Board of the Prince's Trust International.Trade ReviewPoignant. This is a beautiful, powerful book. * Helen Alderson, International Committee of the Red Cross *Elizabeth says: Feminism is about accepting the inevitable limitations while nurturing mind independence. Cornell University Press Nested Security
Book SynopsisWhy does soft power conflict management meet with variable success over the course of a single mediation? In Nested Security, Erin K. Jenne asserts that international conflict management is almost never a straightforward case of success or failure. Instead, external mediators may reduce communal tensions at one point but utterly fail at another point, even if the incentives for conflict remain unchanged. Jenne explains this puzzle using a nested security model of conflict management, which holds that protracted ethnic or ideological conflicts are rarely internal affairs, but rather are embedded in wider regional and/or great power disputes. Internal conflict is nested within a regional environment, which in turn is nested in a global environment. Efforts to reduce conflict on the ground are therefore unlikely to succeed without first containing or resolving inter-state or trans-state conflict processes.Nested security is neither irreversible nor static: ethnic relations may eTrade ReviewErin Jenne makes an important contribution to the literature on conflict management. Jenne argues that in order for mediation of civil disputes to succeed, it is necessary to first address the wider conflict environment.... But as she herself acknowledges, external stability alone does not create peace. It is an important piece of the conflict management puzzle and she does well to remind scholars and policymakers alike that we cannot get so caught up in the trees that we miss the forest. -- Jennifer De Maio * H-Net *Jenne (Central European Univ.) presents a comprehensive analysis of international conflict management under two European security systems: the League of Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).... highly recommended. -- K. Cornell University Press A Community of Europeans
Book SynopsisIn A Community of Europeans? a thoughtful observer of the ongoing project of European integration evaluates the state of the art about European identity and European public spheres. Thomas Risse argues that integration has had profound and long-term effects on the citizens of EU countries, most of whom now have at least a secondary European identity to complement their national identities. Risse also claims that we can see the gradual emergence of transnational European communities of communication. Exploring the outlines of this European identity and of the communicative spaces, Risse sheds light on some pressing questions: What do Europe and the EU mean in the various public debates? How do European identities and transnational public spheres affect policymaking in the EU? And how do they matter in discussions about enlargement, particularly Turkish accession to the EU? What will be the consequences of the growing contestation and politicization of European affairs for European deTrade Review"A Community of Europeans? is a pathbreaking contribution that brings together the main strands of theoretical and policy debate since the EU's current identity crisis began in the early 1990s and evaluates them against the best and most up-to-date empirical data. Thomas Risse has been a leading voice in these debates since their inception." -- Thomas Banchoff, Director of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and Associate Professor of Government, Georgetown University"In a book that will become a classic, Thomas Risse provides a fascinating, comprehensive, and wise analysis of European identity. This book is a model of conceptual clarity, empirical richness, and theoretical acuity that is certain to shape both the field of European studies and debate about the future of Europe." -- Gary Marks, Chair in Multilevel Governance, VU Amsterdam, and Burton Craige Professor, UNC–Chapel Hill"This timely and important book spans sociology, comparative politics, and international relations. Thomas Risse was one of the first to write about European identity issues as well as about the European public sphere; he combines sophisticated quantitative methodology with careful qualitative analysis." -- Vivien Schmidt, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration, Boston University"Thomas Risse has taken up the hard question of whether or not a European public sphere exists. He has tentatively answered 'yes.' But, he also has a realistic view of the limits of that sphere and the political forces that affect the possibility of that sphere expanding, contracting or leading to bad outcomes. His perspective marks a clear position in this important debate about the future of Europe. This makes the book well worth reading." -- Neil Fligstein, University of California, BerkeleyTable of ContentsIntroduction: The Europeanization of Identities and Public SpheresPart I. Book SynopsisWhy have the states of Europe agreed to create an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a single European currency? What will decide the fate of this bold project? This book explains why monetary integration has deepened in Europe from the Bretton...Trade ReviewA significant contribution to our understanding of the relationship between ideas and political and economic decisions. * Governance: An International Journal of Policy and Administration *An exhaustive case study.... McNamara's book provides a wealth of valuable detail on the path taken by European elites to develop a coordinated monetary policy and ultimately, a shared currency. * Society for Women in International Political Economy Newsletter *It is the prevailing wisdom that economic forces have driven Europe toward the adoption of its single currency, the euro, and that political forces have played a secondary role, if that. It is refreshing, therefore, to find a book that takes politics seriously in what is surely a political situation (as well as an economic one). McNamara considers not just politics but the ideas that condition political decisions and the environment in which those ideas are developed. An interesting book.... Well written with many useful references. * Choice *Kathleen McNamara's book is a welcome addition to the small but growing collection of scholarship which straddles the political/economic divide in order to understand contemporary developments in the global political economy.... Book SynopsisThis book demonstrates the importance of the credibility and the costs of accession conditionality for the adoption of EU rules in Central and Eastern Europe.Trade Review"Europeanization as a theme has for far too long been bound up with west European experience. This excellent volume opens up the subject as a way of better understanding and theorizing the processes of change in central and eastern Europe."—Helen Wallace, European University Institute"This terrific book is without question the most theoretically sophisticated and wide-ranging analysis yet of the impact of European Union norms and rules in the candidate countries of Central and Eastern Europe."—Mark A. Pollack, Temple University"The Europeanization of Central and Eastern Europe deals with an important topic in an interesting and theoretically informed way. It makes a significant contribution to a number of debates and lines of research in international relations, comparative public policy, and European studies."—Ellen Comisso, University of California, San Diego"The Eastern enlargement of the EU constitutes one of the most significant processes of fundamental and peaceful domestic transformation as well as democratic consolidation in world history. This book demonstrates in detail that the extension of EU membership to Central and Eastern Europe is a process of Europeanization, that is, of fundamental domestic change in response to EU rules and regulations. The volume represents a superb example of theory-guided empirical research and the first one using the framework of Europeanization to study Eastern enlargement. If you want to understand the domestic impact of EU Eastern enlargement, you must read this book!"—Thomas Risse, Freie Universitët Berlin
