    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAs recognised in the Incheon Declaration, the achievement of SDG 4 is dependent on opportunities and challenges posed by technology, a relationship that was strengthened by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Technology appears in six out of the ten targets in the fourth Sustainable Development goal on education. These references recognize that technology affects education through five distinct channels, as input, means of delivery, skill, tool for planning, and providing a social and cultural context. There are often bitter divisions in how the role of technology is viewed, however. These divisions are widening as the technology is evolving at breakneck speed. The 2023 GEM Report on technology and education explores these debates, examining education challenges to which appropriate use of technology can offer solutions (access, equity and inclusion; quality; technology advancement; system management), while recognizing that many solutions proposed may also be detrimental. The report also explores three system-wide conditions (access to technology, governance regulation, and teacher preparation) that need to be met for any technology in education to reach its full potential.

Book SynopsisThe COVID-19 pandemic has raised huge concerns for the mental health of an entire generation of children. But the pandemic may represent only the tip of a mental health iceberg, an iceberg we have ignored for far too long. For the first time, The State of the World's Children 2021 examines the mental health of children and adolescents. Against a backdrop of rising awareness of mental health issues, there is now a unique opportunity to promote good mental health for every child, protect vulnerable children, and care for children facing the greatest challenges. Making that happen will require urgent investment in child and adolescent mental health across sectors - not just in health, to support proven interventions. It will also need societies to break the silence surrounding mental health, by addressing stigma, promoting understanding, and taking seriously the experiences of children and young people

Book SynopsisIndia in the United Nations: Interplay of Interests and Principles presents a holistic and systematic understanding of India’s long and rich association with the United Nations (UN) ever since it was established nearly 75 years ago. It examines notable patterns and phases of India’s role in the UN and focuses on key areas of contemporary relevance where India’s diplomatic efforts were at play. These include the India–Pakistan conflicts as well as other regional conflicts in the context of new threats to security, peacekeeping operations, countering international terrorism, protection of human rights, development diplomacy, internet governance and the question of enlargement of the Security Council. This book offers glimpses of India’s persistence in framing its priorities and strategies for securing moral, legal and political endorsement in line with the established principles of the UN. HarperCollins India Strategic Challenges: India in 2030

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the shifting sands of contemporary geopolitics, this edited volume puts the spotlight firmly on urgent strategic challenges India is likely to face by the year 2030. Already, major powers like China and Russia are adopting muscular policies with the intent of changing the global order. This includes attempts to take territories--claimed by them on the basis of, at times, imagined history--through the use of military force. The US and the West are struggling to retain their pre-eminence, while emerging powers in the Indo-Pacific are demanding representation at the global high table. Each player is seeking to shape events to their advantage. As alliances are altered, India finds itself in a position that calls for dexterous, nimble and bold policies. India is also presented with an opportunity to wield influence that would place it in an advantageous geopolitical position. Strategic Challenges aims to form a fuller picture of the situation by examining the various pieces that make up this dynamic kaleidoscope, with chapters authored by India''s leading thinkers, analysts and strategists. Beginning with an introduction by the former foreign secretary, Vijay Gokhale, the topics the book tackles include the volatility of India''s neighbourhood, its hesitant embrace of the US, implications of Russia''s warming ties with China, modern military technology on land, sea and air, and the challenges of artificial intelligence, among others.

Book SynopsisThe book is about assessing the effectiveness of a traditional UN Peace Operation. The book first goes on to develop a conceptual framework for the evaluation of UN peace operations and apply that to assess the performance of a traditional UN Peace Operation with UNIFIL as a case study. The author relies on empirical data, supported by perceptions and practical experiences of peacekeepers and 'subject matter experts' at both the operational and tactical levels using a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author proves that UNIFIL can be assessed to be a satisfactorily successful UN Peace Operation. He ends the book with a few major takeaways and offers actionable recommendations to the practitioners of peacekeeping and for future reform of UN peace operations. This book is the first of its kind by a former Indian peacekeeper who holds a PhD from Tilburg University, the Netherland.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisWe are now entering a world of greater plurilateralism, one that recognizes the shortcomings of multilateralism, the limits of bilateralism and the untenability of unilateralism. The current global situation has opened up spaces for more decentralised globalisation offering more opportunities to many more middle powers to participate actively in the international arena. What will the new order look like in the 21st century? The UN''s conflict prevention, peace-making and building role in regional conflicts, interstate and intrastate wars, and terrorism are serious developments coexisting with major power elitism, cross-veto, and implementation gaps. Universal membership of 193 countries makes consensus-building elusive. Big powers resort to unilateralism, regionalism, plurilateral and issue-based strategic groupings acting on their perceived national interests. The United Nations, therefore, enters the post globalized era in the 21st century as a central point of constancy in an age of flux. Through years of patient effort, it has achieved a complementarity in the working of its different organs which makes it the only organ most suited to fulfil its arduous tasks, thereby justifying its sustainability over 75 years. This new revised edition of the book looks at the old and new mandates of the United Nations today.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the transformation of India’s relations with Central and Eastern Europe from being a subset of Indo-Soviet relations during the Cold War to the rediscovery and rebuilding of relations with the region almost from scratch in the post-Cold War era. It examines how the combination of Brexit, the rise of China and India’s expanding geo-economic interests in Europe has led the Narendra Modi government to contemplate relations with Central Europe through a more strategic lens and treat the region as an autonomous element within India’s foreign policy rather than a footnote of its relations with other great powers. Fulfilling a long-felt gap in existing literature, this volume examines India’s political, economic, investment, defence and cultural relations with the Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). It analyzes Indian perceptions of Central Europe and explores prospects of New Delhi’s political and economic engagement with the region. The painstakingly compiled appendices on the exchange of bilateral visits and agreements between India and the Visegrad Four would be of immense use as a handy reference to scholars, policy-makers, and other interested persons and institutions.Trade Review“The book India and Central Europe: Perceptions, Perspectives and Prospects edited by Rajendra Jain is a welcome addition to the literature on India’s engagement with Central European countries. It is a timely Contribution … . the book provides a comprehensive analysis of India’s engagement with these countries, which is important for Indian foreign policy makers as they attempt to carve a roadmap for their relations in the future.” (Priya Vijaykumar Poojary, CEU Review of Books, ceureviewofbooks.com, September, 2023)Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisThis book explores the establishment process, mechanism design, and role orientation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) under the new background of global economic governance. After the international financial crisis in 2008, the process of economic globalization and the comparison of international forces have presented a new situation, and the global economic governance system since has entered a period of deep adjustment and transformation. At the same time, the problems and drawbacks of the original multilateral development financial system have become increasingly prominent. This not only provides a historical opportunity for the establishment of the AIIB, but also gives it a new important role in the global multilateral development financial system. The innovation of the AIIB’s governance model, such as organizational structure, equity, and voting rights allocation, makes it more efficient in operation. And in practice, it is playing an increasingly important role in promoting policy connectivity, infrastructure connectivity, trade connectivity, financial connectivity and people-to-people connectivity of Asian region.Table of ContentsPreface.- Foreword.- Chapter 1 Global Economic Governance in an Era of Transformation.- Chapter 2 Realistic Needs: Development Financial System Calls for New Members.- Chapter 3 The Creation of AIIB: Preparation and Operation.- Chapter 4 Mechanism Design: Governance Structure and Rules of AIIB.- Chapter 5 Vision and Mission: AIIB and Regional Connectivity.- Annex I: Articles of Agreement of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.- Annex II Members, Subscriptions and Voting Power of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.- References.- Postscript.

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewA clear guide to current EU institutions, practices, and policies, this is also an informed insider's account of how they have emerged in their present form, with clues on future change. The mixture of analysis and history, description and prescription, works well, because the author has had a ringside seat, but retains a cool Nordic non-partisan detachment. The hints he offers to those, for example in Asia, considering following a similar path to regional integration, represent the distilled wisdom of a career in balancing economic benefits and national sensitivities. As his story shows, it can be done. - Lord Kerr, Former Head of the UK Diplomatic Service, now Chairman of Imperial College, London and Deputy Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell.

Book SynopsisForty years after the Bangkok Declaration, which established the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a new document was drafted as a result of “bold and visionary recommendations” of an ASEAN Committee of Eminent Persons. The ASEAN Charter, which came into force in 2008, provides ASEAN’s legal status and institutional framework. In effect, it is a legally binding agreement among the 10 ASEAN Member States. And while the strength of ASEAN’s legal character has yet to be fully tested, the Charter is important as a statement of shared norms and aspirations.Written by one of the persons involved in the negotiations leading to the adoption of the Charter, this meticulously researched publication helps readers navigate the ambiguities of the Charter by detailing an insider’s background, provision by provision, of the debates that went into the making of the ASEAN Charter. It not only explains how the provisions of the Charter came to be drafted, but also how they relate to therealities of diplomatic practice. This volume will be an indispensable reference for scholars, working diplomats, and businesses and institutions that have a stake in ASEAN.

ISEAS Flying Blind: Vietnam's Decision to Join ASEAN

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis“This book discusses Vietnam’s relations with ASEAN in the period from the early 1970s to mid-1990s. It focuses on the evolution of Hanoi’s view on ASEAN, from denial to integration in the organization. Further, it reveals the reasons behind Hanoi’s decision to join ASEAN in 1995 in the context of the transformation of the overall Vietnam’s foreign policy when the Cold War ended. Relaxation of the Cold War conditions allowed Hanoi to improve understanding of ASEAN that resulted in better Vietnam-ASEAN relations and subsequent Vietnam’s membership in ASEAN.The author has had access to documents and interviewees that few other researchers can rival. And the richness of the empirical evidence of this book makes a significant contribution to the studies of Vietnam foreign relations in specific and Southeast Asian international relations in general.Trade Review“This is a uniquely well-informed account of Vietnam’s serious internal debates leading to the decision to join ASEAN in 1995. The story starts with a probing analysis of Hanoi’s regional diplomacy and relations with the Soviet Union, China, and the United States from the 1970s onward. Entering the 1990s, the narrative shows how Vietnamese policymakers struggled to reconcile ideological and pragmatic considerations as they navigated complex great-power and regional environments. Professor Tung dispels conventional balance-of- power explanations for Hanoi’s embrace of ASEAN, and argues persuasively that the decision to join grew out of a shift from a revolutionary national identity to an identity centered on developmental state model of the Southeast Asian type. This honest and close-up view of policy debates offers a rare opportunity for readers to understand the logic of policymaking in one of the world’s most complex diplomatic environments.” — Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia University”
