Rizzoli International Publications Michael S Smith Kitchens and Baths The Dressing
Book SynopsisThe newest book from acclaimed designer Michael S. Smith showcases his exceptional take on kitchens and baths, the busiest yet most personal rooms in a home. Legendary designer Michael S. Smith has stories to tell about kitchens and bathrooms-those he has designed himself, and those that inspire him. In this fascinating and inspirational book, Smith, who has his own line of kitchen and bath fixtures for Kohler, explains how these rooms define a house. Kitchens and bathrooms are among the most expensive and labor-intensive rooms to design. But they are also opposites, the most public and private zones of a house. In three in-depth case studies and dozens of supporting examples, Smith discusses his design process for these rooms, from big-picture issues such as the social engineering of the kitchen’s layout to details large and small, including the importance of choosing the right cabinet, which can be a crystallization of the architecture of the house, as well as countertops, Trade Review"Obama White House designer Michael S. Smith tackles kitchens and baths, two of the most challenging rooms in the home—combining inspiring images of Smith’s projects from around the world with his practical insights. A resources section gives recommendations for everything from appliances to wall coverings." ~Architectural Digest"After doing up the Obamas' White House, Michael S. Smith -- interior designer to the Hollywood elite and lesser (but no less affluent) mortals -- pulls on the rubber gloves with his latest coffee-table tome, "Kitchens and Baths." Utilizing as visual examples homes he designed -- as well as others he admires for their eating and bathing zones Mr. Smiths book is broken into regions ("Beach," "Town," "Country") that provide loads of inspiration. Ultimately, perfecting pantry and potty is a game of hide and seek: keeping the inner workings concealed but reachable." ~Wall Street Journal"...it’s quite thoughtful of Smith to hone in on that niche and deliver inspiration targeted at those who are in search of inspiration for the two rooms in which most people spend a good bulk of their time." ~La Dolce Vita

Rizzoli International Publications How They Decorated Inspiration from Great Women
Book SynopsisHow They Decorated illustrates some of the great rooms of the twentieth century, whose stylish residents influence our tastes today. Gloria Vanderbilt cleverly noted, “Decorating is autobiography.” Reflecting that truism, the interiors in this book capture the individual approaches of these icons of style: Bunny Mellon’s spare all-American elegance; Hélène Rochas’s refined sophistication; Vanessa Bell’s colorful bohemianism; Mona von Bismarck’s breezy opulence; and Georgia O’Keeffe’s earthy chic. Author P. Gaye Tapp analyzes each of her subjects’ refined way of living, how she embellished her residences (or left them elegantly stark), and the long-lasting effects on today’s generation of designers and connoisseurs of beauty. The book is presented in four sections that describe the aesthetic approaches that the ladies took in decorating their abodes: &ldquoTrade Review"In How They Decorated: Inspiration from Great Women of the Twentieth Century, blogger P. Gaye Tapp's "How They Decorated: Inspiration from Great Women of the Twentieth Century." Peaking past the curtains and into the homes of the most discerning aesthetic icons of their time, from Babe Paley and Elsa Schiaparelli to Bunny Mellon and Mona von Bismarck, the book straddles styles, eras, and tastes for an interior journey anchored in a certain, je-ne-sais-quois sense of refinement. Gaye Tapp explores the aesthetic approaches of 16 style-setters, including Pauline de Rothschild, Babe Paley, Bunny Mellon, Georgie O’Keeffe and more."—Modern Luxury Interiors, Atlanta"Covering these sixteen elegant women, she shows how they (most of course worked with decorators, architects and designers) orchestrated rooms of great charm, individuality and style. Tables are lavishly set, bedrooms invite lingering, fashions are paraded. Rizzoli International Publications Casa Santa Fe
Book SynopsisPresented here are houses to dream of and dream in—a luminous celebration of the finest examples of the Santa Fe Style from the eighteenth century to today, in this high-desert mecca of artists, craftspeople, artisans, and designers.Desert hues, natural materials, thick hand-plastered walls, and adobe brick construction are hallmarks of the Santa Fe Style, which is as much an expression in architecture, interior design, art, and crafts as it is a way of life. Rooted in a sense of earthy comfort inspired by its history, the surrounding desert, and Native American and Hispanic design influences, the style has a timeless appeal and vibrant ongoing life that has resulted in these extraordinary homes. With features such as eighteenth-century peeled vigas, tin chandeliers, romantic iron sconces, and hand-hewn wood-beamed ceilings, each house is a rich yet harmonious invitation that will engage the senses and speak to the soul. Beyond the houses, the writer and phoTrade Review"The unique architectural style of Santa Fe has been admired and studied for many years. When presented in a handsome, photo-centric, hardcover book, the result is delightful. The authors, photographer Melba Levick and architectural historian Rubén Mendoza, an archeologist and founding faculty member at the California State University, have previous experience working with each other on The Spanish Style House: From Enchanted Andalusia to the California Dream and The California Missions. The cover is simple with san-serif text which gives it a clean look. The interior photos are vibrant and clear, capturing the decor and different architectural styles of Santa Fe well. The text of Casa Santa Fe, though limited, is rich in historical depth. The book discusses the history of Santa Fe, its architecture and design style, and the influences on both Santa Fe and its style over the years. Each casa entry is paired with a few paragraphs that covers the current and past owners, renovation, construction, and history of the house. The text was a little small and not extremely readable, but the content was interesting and informative. My favorite aspect of the book was the short sections on the arts and general style of Santa Fe, including doors, gates, walls, and fences, gardens, the farmers’ market, weaving, and (my favorite), snow. It’s interesting how pervasive a distinctive style like the Santa Fe style is.The section on snow in Santa Fe presents a unique and unexpected perspective of the seasons of Santa Fe Materials. The book’s overall quality was good — carrying out its task as a photo book well. The paper was adequately thick for its purpose and the book had a nice, sturdy feeling in the hand. Casa Santa Fe is a well-written, informative, and aesthetically-pleasing book, fit to adorn any coffee table." — MEDIUM.COM
