It redefines how we think about Hinduism, comparative study, and Christian theology. This book offers a bold new look at how the two traditions encounter one another, and how comparisons can be made between the two. Redefining theology as an interreligious, comparative, dialogical, and confessional practice open to people of all traditions, it invites not only Hindus and Christians, but also theologians from all religious traditions, to enter into conversation with one another.Trade Review... if there is to be inter-religious theological conversation at all ... it is true that reason must be its presupposition and mainstay. Francis Clooney has written the definitive work on this in the context of the Hindu-Christian encounter. The book is therefore indispensable reading for any serious study on the topic. * Hindu-Christian Studies Bulletin *Clooney's account is lucid and clearly argued, establishing a regular format with a neat juxtaposition of approaches and brief but well-focused summaries ... Book SynopsisThis volume offers an in-depth study of key themes common to the Hindu and Christian religious traditions. It redefines how we think about Hinduism, comparative study, and Christian theology. This book offers a bold new look at how traditions encounter one another, and how good comparisons are to be made. Redefining theology as an interreligious, comparative, dialogical, and confessional practice open to all people, it invites not only Hindus and Christians, but also theologians from all religious traditions, to enter into conversation with one another.Trade ReviewIt is no longer acceptable for theologians to criticize other religions or to think their own religion superior unless and until they have engaged in true dialogue (which means learning the necessary languages and texts, etc.). • Oxford University Press Rethinking Pluralism Ritual Experience And Ambiguity

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe authors argue that resorting to rules and categories cannot adequately address the pervasive problems of ambiguity, difference, and boundaries - that is, the challenge of pluralism in our world. They show that alternative, more particularistic modes of dealing with ambiguity through ritual and shared experience may attune more closely with contemporary problems of living with difference.Trade ReviewThis is a work of great substance and commitment, drawing atypically from a broad range of human experience and intellect. It is a living seminar on the possibilities of human understanding and the potential for living together in more peaceful ways despite the seemingly insurmountable differences even among the best-intentioned people. It is a brilliant tour de force, offering conceptualizations and categorizations that defy much of the present-day ways in which the problem of pluralism is understood. * Jonathan Imber, Jean Glasscock Professor of Sociology, Wellesley College *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements ; Introduction ; Ch. 1: The Importance of Being Ambiguous ; Interlude: Ambiguity, Order and the Deity ; Ch. 2: Notation and its Limits ; Interlude: The Israelite Red Heifer and the Edge of Power in China ; Ch. 3: Ritual and the Rhythms of Ambiguity ; Interlude: Crossing the Boundaries of Empathy ; Ch. 4: Shared Experience ; Interlude: Experience and Multiplicity ; Conclusion ; References Cited

  • Oxford University Press Opening the Covenant

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Vatican II Council of 1965 signaled a new era in the relationship of the Jewish and Christian faiths. Determined to free the Church of the anti-Jewish polemic which led to such widespread suffering of the innocent, Catholic authorities completely revised their conceptions of Jews and Judaism. Soon, many mainstream Protestant churches also issued a series of official statements that affirm the eternal nature of God''s ancient covenant with Israel. An entirely new category of theology emerged as part of the developing Jewish-Christian dialogue, and gradually Jewish theologians began to respond. Opening the Covenant represents a significant advance in Jewish thinking about Christianity. Michael Kogan delves deep into the theologies of the two faiths to locate precise points of difference and convergence. He sees Christianity as the breaking open of the original Covenant to include Gentile peoples. God has brought this about, says Kogan, through the work of Jesus and his interpreters.Trade ReviewIn Opening the Covenant, Michael Kogan faces the people, confronts them with a theological challenge in an honest and upright way, and does it with a purity of language, as the tradition demands. * Rabbi David Lincoln, Park Avenue Synagogue *Michael Kogan's book, Opening the Covenant: A Jewish Theology of Christianity, is a major contribution toward a thoughtful understanding of what Christianity might mean for us as Jews. The product of his extensive experience in talking with Christians about faith, his philosophical training, and his deep knowledge of Jewish thought, this book maps out some critically important features of Jewish belief that can help Jews be fully committed to Judaism and, as a result of those convictions (and definitely not in spite of them) come to understand Christians as people of a different but an intelligent and sincere faith. Indeed, only in comparison to such a conception of Christianity can Jews understand the values and concepts that their own tradition affirms. * Rabbi Elliot Dorff, American Jewish University *Michael Kogan does what Jews must do if they are to engage in a true dialogue with Christianity, namely, take Christianity seriously as an object of God's communication and affection. Dialogue is mutuality. Until now, one could claim that the Jewish-Christian conversation was only a prolegomenon to dialogue. Now it enters into an authentic dialogue. * Leonard Swidler, Professor of Catholic Thought and Interreligious Dialogue, Temple University *Are Jews anonymous Christians? Are Christians anonymous Jews, co-witnesses of the God of Israel among the Gentiles? With an intimate knowledge of both of these communities, Michael Kogan answers Yes and No to both ideas. He represents these two religions as standing on the edge of grasping the implications of encountering the absolute and incomprehensible Holy Mystery revealed to each. Each community has been addressed by, has responded to, and thus is constituted by the same faithful presence, or Word, or love of God. This book cuts through the phony complexity of theological mystification and opens up the exhilarating simplicity of the choice offered to each community: to recognize the other as kin, to appreciate the intimate partnership of responding to the transcendent God of power and love, and to witness together to the values of God's kingdom in this world. This is essential reading for all Jews and Christians. * Roger Haight, S. J., Union Theological Seminary *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; 1. Defining Our Terms ; 2. The Question of the Messiah ; 3. Book SynopsisThis book reflects on one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the current and historical relationships that exist between the faith-traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Kessler’s writings shed light on common purpose as well as how to manage difference.Trade ReviewThese essays by one of Europe's foremost Jewish scholars of Jewish-Christian and Jewish-Muslim relations provide many keen insights into developments in interreligious relations over the past fifteen years. But that is not all! In addition, Edward Kessler points ahead to important future tasks. He calls for "exegetical relativity" in interpreting scriptures; for bringing dialogue into the mainstream of Jewish concerns; for reckoning with the impact of globalization on interreligious relations; for greater study of the mutual influence the Abrahamic traditions have had on each other; for explorations of how Judaism might serve as an intermediary between Christianity and Islam; and, above all, for all three communities to remember the past for the sake of their common future. -- Philip A. Cunningham, Ph.D.,This volume represents another highly readable, topical contribution by Kessler. The subjects covered include helpful overviews of generational shifts, global changes, and institutional statements, as well as a range of insightful biblical studies and explorations of the place of Islam within interfaith dialogue. Altogether, this collection of essays offers a fascinating window onto the developing world of Abrahamic Faith studies. -- Daniel LangtonThis volume from one of the UK's leading practitioners of, and reflectors on, relations between and among the Abrahamic religions, provides valuable insights into many different aspects of their inter-relationship, including their texts, both scriptural and contemporary, and the dynamics of the relationship between them on a community level, both in the West and in the Middle East. -- Hugh Goddard

Book SynopsisDrawing on resources from political theologies, and in particular conversation with Graham Ward and Romand Coles, 'Interrupting the Church's Flow' challenges our lazy understanding of receptivity, digging deep to uncover a rich theological seam which has the potential to radically alter how theologians think about what we draw from urban places.Trade ReviewThis book offers us a renewing and challenging vision of how to be human in unsettling times. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume of the series "Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses" investigates the roots of the concept of "body" in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Body and being a created being stands in the focus of all the thre major monotheistic faiths. It is not just by the christian idea of man's likeness to God that indicates that the human body is a central object of religious thinking, both culturally and theologically charged. Here, the body stands in the crossfire of terms like "pure" and "unpure", "sacred" and "profane", "male" and "femal". And besides the theological controversies, everyday experiences like sexuality, gender equality and how to dispose of the own body (and that of others) are undoubtly recent and highly contentious discussion points in the debate of a peaceful living together of different religions and cultures. The volume presents the concept of "body" in its different aspects as anchored in the traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It unfolds commonalities and differences between the three monotheistic religions as well as the manifold discourses about peace within these three traditions. The book offers fundamental knowledge about the specific understanding of the body in each one of these traditions, their interdependencies and their relationship to secular world views.

Book SynopsisThis volume of the series "Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses" investigates the roots of the concept of "soul" in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The human soul fascinates not only believers in the three monotheistic faiths. Believing in an immortal entitiy, surpassing body, materia and their temporality and thus seeming to be closer to the creator that the mere body was and remains to be a vividly discussed theme in theological and practical debates. Even our secular, postreligious environment is unable to disengage from the key concept of the soul. Numerous proverbs, undefined concepts and hopes prove this fact. Asking for the soul means asking fundamental questions like life after death and therefor asking for one of the most fundamental and uniting hopes of human beings, be they secular or religious. The volume presents the concept of "soul" in its different aspects as anchored in the traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It unfolds commonalities and differences between the three monotheistic religions as well as the manifold discourses about peace within these three traditions. • De Gruyter The Concept of Person in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe sixth volume of the series "Key Concepts of Interreligious Discourses" investigates the roots of the concept of "person" in Judaism, Christianity and Islam and its relevance for the present time. The concept of "person" lies at the core of central ideas in the modern world, such as the value and development of personal identity, the sanctity of human person and the human rights based on that. In societies that are shaped by a long Christian tradition, these ideas are associated often with the belief in the creation of man in the image of God. But although Judaism shares with Christianity the same Biblical texts about the creation of man and also the Qurʾān knows Adam as the first human being created by God and his representative on earth, the focus on the concept of "person" is in each one of these religions a different one. So, the crucial question is: how did the concept of "person" evolve in Judaism, Christianity and Islam out of the concept of "human being"? What are the special features of personhood in each one of these traditions? The volume presents the concept of "person" in its different aspects as anchored in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It unfolds commonalities and differences between the three monotheistic religions as well as the manifold discourses about the meaning of "person" within these three religions.

Oneworld Publications Are Non-Christians Saved?: Joseph Ratzinger's

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisReligious pluralism upholds the idea that multiple religions can coexist and be beneficial for society; it is a concept spreading around the world, not only in Asia with its myriad beliefs and practices, but also in Europe where many non-Christian religious traditions are growing. On the face of it, religious pluralism is the ultimate message of tolerance, a vitally important principle for how we can live peacefully. But not everyone sees it this way. Joseph Ratzinger, former Pope Benedict XVI and Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, is amongst those who regard religious pluralism as a threat to Christianity. If only Christianity can save us, then how can religious pluralism do anything but hinder Christianity’s cause? Ambrose Mong examines Ratzinger’s thoughts on this subject and evaluates how the church has responded to the call of the Second Vatican Council to create dialogues with other faiths. By looking at Ratzinger’s educational, cultural and religious background, Mong reveals the roots of Ratzinger’s Eurocentric bias and how it has shaped the views that he holds today, including his attitude towards religious pluralism, his ecclesiology and his ecumenical theology. Are Non-Christians Saved? is essential reading for students, teachers and scholars seeking a thorough analysis of Ratzinger’s position, including why he believes religious pluralism, with its ‘evil twins’ of relativism and secularism, is a threat to Christianity.Trade Review'Bold and challenging'. * Theology *‘Carefully nuanced... explores Josef Ratzinger’s writings about the foundations of Christianity, the challenge of modernity and the corrosive effect of relativism... As we transition into a world church, Father Mong suggests a pathway of understanding and interfaith dialogue that will enrich the church that we are becoming and perhaps result in a greater harmony, even as all people of faith seek the truth together.’ -- Patrick Howell, S.J., professor of pastoral theology at Seattle University and publisher of the periodical Conversations * America: The National Catholic Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Foundations Chapter 2: Religious Pluralism Chapter 3: Ecclesiology Chapter 4: Ecumenism Chapter 5: Secularism Chapter 6: Relativism Chapter 7: Europe Chapter 8: Tissa Balasuriya OMI Chapter 9: Jacques Dupuis SJ Chapter 10: Peter C. Book SynopsisThis ground-breaking book contains contributions from 12 different religious traditions: Hinduism, African Traditional Religion, Judaism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Shintoism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Unitarianism and Bahá'í. Interfaith worship and prayer can be complex, but this book demonstrates that in a world of many cultures and religions, there is an urgent need for religions to come together with trust and communication, especially when there is a crisis. Full of insights and examples of practice, the book demonstrates how religions can be a powerful means of unity and compassion. The book opposes the 'clash of civilisations' model as a way of interpreting the world and promotes peace, hope, and the possibility of cooperation. Religious believers can be sincere and committed to their own faith, while recognising the need to stand firmly together with members of other religious traditions.Trade ReviewThis book will be an invaluable resource for teachers and also religious leaders as they seek to show common ground shared by religions, whilst not undermining the central claims of the different traditions. It is also provides an excellent way of beginning to understand alternative perspectives other than one's own. -- Dr Peter Vardy was Vice-Principal of Heythrop College, University of London and is a well-known philosopher of religionThose of any theological position will find this an excellent resource in thinking about and planning for worship or prayer involving people of different faiths. The contributors cover an unusually wide range of material, and the practical suggestions they offer are sensible, balanced and achievable. -- Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of LichfieldSome theologians find good reasons to say why it is difficult to pray together. This book condenses some striking arguments why it is indispensable to do it anyway. A unique collection of interfaith perspectives to meet in love and face the divine. -- Rabbi Walter Homolka PhD PhD DHL, Professor of Modern Jewish Thought and Interreligious Dialogue School of Jewish Theology at the University of Potsdam GermanyA fascinating guide to the variety of approaches to worship, both within and between different faith traditions, as well as the possibilities and limitations of interfaith worship. What is clear is that the human need for inspiration and assurance from The Divine is universal. -- Princess Badiya el Hassan, Princess of JordanThis is a timely book which will serve as a handbook for those exploring the possibilities of interfaith worship. As the book's subtitle has it we must pray together, in other words coming together to pray in today's world is no longer an optional extra but a practical imperative. In the book representatives of twelve major world faith traditions give detailed, scholarly and personal explanations of how interfaith worship is understood and practised within their faith groups. Interfaith Worship and Prayer is an invaluable guide to those hoping to deepen their spiritual connection with people of other religions. It does not suggest that interfaith encounter is always easy, the writers and the reflective sections contributed by the editors highlight many of the difficulties encountered as we pray together. But taken altogether it is a clear sighted and open exploration of how followers of different religions can learn to worship together that deserves to find wide useacross all faith communities. -- Rev Dr David Steers, Editor, Faith and FreedomAll who envision a peaceful future for the humanity with rich spiritual life must explore ways to build harmony among diverse faith communities that now encounter one another in all parts of our globalized world. Sadly, the encounters often turn into occasions for tensions. This timely collection of essays by scholars and followers from diverse faith traditions of the world invites readers to reflect creatively on the urgent need of our times to turn encounters into dialogs. With a focus on the most active manifestation of faith - worship - and with organizational principle of respect, the book opens windows to the worlds of many religious communities with whom the reader will feel inspired to pray, standing in their own place but being a part of a symphony. Pragmatic and accessible, the book offers an invaluable resource for teachers, students, and indeed all world citizens to cultivate understanding of perspectives other than their own. Book SynopsisMultifaith spaces reflect the diversity of the modern world and enable a connection between individuals from different religious backgrounds. These spaces also highlight the complex and sensitive areas of political and social debates regarding the emergence of densely urbanised populations. They hold the potential to encourage connection and dialogue between members of different communities, promoting empathy, community and shared activity for the betterment of society. This book explores the history, development, design and practicalities of multifaith spaces from the early shared religious buildings that had to cater for two or more faiths, to the shared multifaith spaces of modern secular locations such as universities, airports and hospitals. Terry Biddington looks at the architectural, theological, social, legal and practical complexities that arise from the development and use of such spaces. The book also draws together research to enable further development of multifaith spaces.Trade ReviewThis book is the first in depth study on multifaith spaces, examining the new shape religion is taking in today's institutions. A `must read' for all engaged in planning, creating and running similar projects and all who want to get a understanding of one way in which religion is back in the public sphere with powerful symbols of peace and integration in diversity. -- Martin Rötting, Professor of Religious Studies, Paris-Lodron University Salzburg and Chair at House of Culture and Religion e.V. MunichTerry Biddginton's superb examination of multifaith spaces will make a big contribution to inter-religious understanding. It offers an encyclopaedia of examples of the many ways in which people have wrestled with the dilemmas of creating multifaith spaces. Equally it provides a clear-sighted analysis of the underlying challenges and tensions which must be negotiated to enable the cohabitation of different faiths. It's a book whose relevance and usefulness will surely increase in the future. -- Simon Keyes, Professor of Reconciliation and Peacebuilding, University of Winchester

Book SynopsisAs spiritual paths, Zen and Christianity can learn from one another. In this book, Anglican priest and Zen teacher Christopher Collingwood sets out how Zen can return Christians to their roots with renewed energy, and allow others to consider Christianity in a new and more favourable light. For the many Christians searching for a greater depth of spirituality, Zen offers a way to achieve openness. Drawing on Zen experience and the teachings of Jesus as depicted in the gospels, Zen Wisdom for Christians enables Christians to explore avenues of thought and experience that are fresh and creative. Using examples of Zen koans and Zen readings of Christian texts, the author provides a radical reorientation of life - away from one based on self-centredness and the notion of a separate, isolated self, to a way that is inclusive and at one with all.Zen Wisdom for Christians proves that the practice of Zen can lead Christians towards deeper spirituality and enhance religious experience through mutual appreciation, in a way that is truly eye-opening and life-changing.Trade ReviewThis refreshing, eye-opening book, presenting sundry examples illustrating how Zen practice can enrich Christian life and understanding, is an invitation for earnest spiritual seekers to undertake an inward journey that leads to one's true home. -- Ruben L.F. Habito, Guiding Teacher, Maria Kannon Zen Center, Dallas, TexasZen Wisdom for Christians is a timely and penetrating book that left me wanting more. Unlike many books attempting inter-religious dialogue, the strength of Collingwood's book arises from the integrity of prolonged praxis of both Christianity and Zen, realising their complementarity, and living and resolving any tensions that may arise. He neither blurs the boundaries nor slides over the paradoxes - in fact he shows how essential paradoxes are to each discipline. A must read for Christians and Buddhists alike. -- Maggie Ross, Anglican Solitary and author of Silence: A User’s Guide, Vols. 1 and 2Zen Wisdom for Christians is a lucid, accessible reflection on the transforming power of encounter with Zen Buddhism. The reader is invited to participate in the silence of Zen meditation, to reflect on seemingly paradoxical Zen koans and to re-read biblical passages in the light of Zen insights. 'Zen is supremely about letting go and allowing our true self to manifest itself quite naturally', the author writes. It is about taking responsibility for our lives, dying to our narrow, egotistical selves, and coming home to a place where love and compassion bring us into unity with all that is. Throughout, the author speaks from his own experience of deep meditation practice. He is a worthy guide to a tradition that can enrich Christian experience. -- Elizabeth J. Interest in Ibn 'Arabi in the west has grown over the last century. "Ibn Arabi and the Contemporary West" examines 'Arabi's teachings through the work of the Beshara Trust and the Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi Society. The study investigates how the Beshara School has used Ibn 'Arabi's teachings in assisting a range of students from around the world towards personal, spiritual development and how the Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi Society has evolved into an international organisation with increasing influence in both the West and the Muslim world.Trade Review'Ibn Arabi and the Contemporary West tells several remarkable and intertwined stories. In the context of Islamic Studies, it recounts the recent transmission of universal spiritual teachings that were once central to the spread of Islam as a world religion and civilization, but then were lost and often rejected in the aftermath of colonialism, to the UK and the wider English-speaking world; and it concludes with the unexpected ways that spiritual heritage is now being rediscovered by new generations across the Muslim world. In that new, global setting, this study also sketches the background of the multi-faceted, increasingly global adaptation of Ibn 'Arabi's teachings - which for centuries had helped integrate and inspire the burgeoning creative expressions of the Islamic humanities and spirituality across Asia and Africa - by contemporary artists and thinkers working in many of those same fields today: including philosophy, ecology, architecture, psychology, spirituality, and religious thought. Book SynopsisWestern Christians in the twentieth century viewed Islam through a lens of social and political concerns that would have appeared novel to their medieval and early-modern predecessors. Concerns about the predicament of secular 'modernity' infused Christian discourse with distinct assumptions that shaped engagement with Islam in fundamentally new ways. J. N. D. (Norman) Anderson (1908-94), a highly influential British Christian scholar of Islam, embodied this new orientation in his commitment to 'modernise' Islam. Anderson's engagement with Islam as a missionary, intelligence agent, scholar of Islamic law and advisor to various Muslim governments, spanned multiple decades and continents. As well as shaping Western understandings of Islamic law and its application, he was involved in debates about the end of the British Empire and the transformation of Christian missions following formal decolonisation. Because of Anderson's location at the intersection of so many different debates concerning Islam, his life provides unique insights into the ways in which Christians reconfigured their response to Islam in the last century. Given Christianity's continued influence on British and American ideas about Islam, this study provides crucial insight into the persistent focus on 'modernising' and 'secularising' Islam today.Trade Review'Thompson's research is meticulous . . . this is a thorough depiction of the ambitious efforts of Anderson and others like him who sought to advocate for the modernization of the Muslim world.’ ‘[The book is] meticulously researched … and will appeal to those interested in Christian-Muslim relations, Islam, Islamic law, Orientalism, and missiology in the twentieth century, as well as in modern British intellectual and religious history more broadly.’ -- Journal of British Studies'An excellent book … exhaustively researched.’ -- Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations Journal‘[A] valuable study.’ -- Reading Religion'Todd Thompson’s book is an illuminating study of Sir Norman Anderson, a prominent Evangelical layman in the twentieth-century Church of England. This book will serve as an invaluable resource for Muslims and non-Muslims interested in the evolution of British colonial and Western cultural engagement with Islam.' Book SynopsisAs a result of world events over the past few years, Islam has entered our consciousness in an unprecedented way. The Qur''an, guiding text for over one billion Muslims, is being looked to for answers to questions like: does the Qur''an promote peace and harmony or discord and conflict, does it contribute to pluralism or exclusivism, is its message spiritual or fanatical? Based on a profound study of the Sufi perspectives of the likes of Ibn ''Arabi, Rumi and Ghazali, The Other in the Light of the One is an attempt to answer the above questions and is an invitation to study the universality that is present in the Qur''an. Its aim is to relate some of the most profound interpretations of the Qur''an to philosophical and spiritual questions concerning interfaith dialogue. For Muslims, The Other in the Light of the One offers a pioneering view of da''wa, in that it allows them the tangible means of putting into practice the many Qur''anic verses that commend discoursing with others on the basis of ''the finest, most beautiful manner.''

This interactive process increased dramatically in the post-war period, when dialogue between Buddhist and Christian thought began to take off in earnest. European society is religiously plural, which is why interfaith learning is becoming increasingly important. It is seldom taken into account that the students participating in such lessons have ideas and attitudes, possibly even entrenched prejudices about other religions. However, this learning condition has implications for learning about and from each other, so it cannot be ignored. This study therefore explores how students think about members of other religions and whether socially widespread reservations are already evident at a young age. Based on this, options for action will be developed as to how this can be addressed in (inter)religious educational processes in order to contribute to a reduction of prejudices.

The writing is clear and concise and would be great required reading for upper division undergraduate courses on religion that could easily range from courses on South Asia, Christianity, Hinduism, Religion and modernity, and a whole host of others. * newbooks.asia *[T]his is a refreshing and inspiring book, necessary to this ongoing debate on the Goan religious experience, and it should be read as a challenge and a complement to other recent literature that has the religious history of Goa as an object of analysis. * Studies in History *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Note on TransliterationIntroduction1.
