Book SynopsisInstallation art has become mainstream in artistic practices. However, acquiring and displaying such artworks implies that curators and conservators are challenged to deal with obsolete technologies, ephemeral materials and other issues concerning care and management of these artworks. By analysing three in-depth case studies, the author sheds new light on the key concepts of traditional conservation (authenticity, artist’s intention, and the notion of ownership) while exploring how these concepts apply in contemporary art conservation. Based on original empirical research and cross-case analysis, this ground-breaking study offers a re-examination of traditional conservation values and ethics, and argues for a reassessment of the role of the conservator of contemporary art.Trade Review"Installation Art and the Museum will become essential reading for scholars and professionals who work in the art world, along with anyone with serious interest in contemporary art and its display. It is an engaging account of what goes on behind museum doors as staff struggles to maintain a sense of authenticity with variable art. Van Saaze reveals the tensions between artists, curators, and conservators who re-create and alter these works for public display. Video requires reformatting and new exhibition equipment as technologies go obsolescent. Installation works change when re-designed for new gallery spaces. Artists challenge the notion of single authorship by transferring decision-making to museum staff or by distributing their role through collaborative practice. The art examined in this book is inherently unstable, and its care provides a rich context for understanding what happens when agreed-upon social practice in museums is disrupted by external change. Interdisciplinary scholarship at its best." Glenn Wharton, Time-Based Media Conservator at the Museum of Modern Art and Research Scholar in Museum Studies, New York University |"This book is a significant and innovative contribution to the literature. At present there is a lack of such a publication addressing in an accessible manner the emergence of contemporary artists’ installations within a museum context and the practice of those responsible for the display and conservation. This publication provides a valuable read for both those new to the subject and the more experienced reader. It is an important and timely piece of research which I believe will be both influential and widely read." Book Synopsis2019 marked the 40th anniversary of Barbara Nanning's graduation in ceramics from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Over those forty years, Nanning (b.1957) has become an internationally respected artist with work in countless public and private collections in the Netherlands and around the world. Originally, her reputation was due mainly to her pioneering ceramics and installations, which had completely abandoned the container form that had so long dominated studio pottery. But for the last 25 years Nanning has worked chiefly in a different medium: glass, in which she has created an amazing and multi-faceted oeuvre. Each year she spends an extended period in the Czech Republic, where expert glassblowers help her to conjure up the most extraordinary and thrilling objects in that material.

Book SynopsisDutch artist Theo Jansen (b. 1948, The Hague) has achieved worldwide recognition for his imposing and ingenious strandbeests, which are much more than art objects. They actually try to create dunes themselves. Taking his inspiration from the theory of evolution, Jansen has taught his strandbeests to float on the sea breeze and to walk independently along the beach. Using PVC tubing, adhesive tape and PET bottles, he has brought a completely new life form into existence. In so doing, he seeks insight into the origins of life itself. His ultimate aim is to have herds of his creations roam the beach all on their own. ‘Give me another couple of million years, and my strandbeests will live completely independently.’ Text in English and Dutch.Table of Contents10 PREGLUTON PERIODE VOORAFGAAND AAN HET GLUTON / THE ERA BEFORE THE GLUTON 1948-1989 16 GLUTON PLAKBANDPERIODE / THE ADHESIVE-TAPE PERIOD 1990 22 CHORDA SJORPERIODE / THE TYING PERIOD 1991-1993 26 CALIDUM HETE PERIODE / THE HOT PERIOD 1993-1994 30 TEPIDEEM LAUWE PERIODE / THE TEPID PERIOD 1994-1997 40 LIGNATUM PERIODE VAN HET HOUT / THE WOOD PERIOD 1997-2001 44 VAPORUM PERIODE VAN DE STOOMGELUIDEN / THE STEAM-SOUNDS PERIOD 2001-2006 50 CEREBRUM PERIODE VAN DE HERSENEN / THE BRAINS PERIOD 2006-2008 60 SUÏCIDEEM/SUICIDEEM PERIODE VAN HET ZELFDESTRUCTIVISME / 2009-2011 64 ASPERSORIUM PERIODE VAN HET KWISPELEN / THE TAIL-WAGGING PERIOD 2012 66 AURUM PERIODE VAN DE ZWAKKE WIND / THE WEAK-WINDS PERIOD 2013-2015 68 BRUCHUM PERIODE VAN DE RUPSEN / THE CATERPILLAR PERIOD 2016-2019 72 VOLANTUM PERIODE VAN HET VLIEGEN / THE FLYING PERIOD 2020-2021 76 FILUM PERIODE VAN DE DRAADJES / THE CORD PERIOD 2021

  • Stief Desmet

    Uitgeverij Kannibaal Stief Desmet

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisStief Desmet (1973) is one of the new names in the Belgian art world. His unusual painting technique sets him apart from the many followers of artists such as Luc Tuymans and Michael Borremans. He has developed his own visual language and his own alphabet, in which he draws on all the resources available to him. Painting is just one of the disciplines he practices; he also creates installations and sculptures, and is renowned for his videos. Desmet questions his own position as a contemporary artist alongside the "golden river" landscape painters (Leieschilders) from his youth, who immortalised the landscape in their pastoral works. Typical characteristics of his work include its escapist nature, in which the artist withdraws into nature, and the humour that is evident in many of his works. Stief Desmet (1973) lives and works in Belgium. He studied at the Royal academy for fine arts (1991-1995) and at the Sint Lucas institute for arts and science (1994-1996) in Gent. In 2005 he was the laureate of the Provincial Price for Visual Arts of East-Flanders. He already exhibited his works in Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the US. Text in English and Dutch SELLING POINTS: . Gives an insight into the multidisciplinary of the work of Stief Desmet, as a painter and a sculptor .
