BenBella Books The Munchkin Book: The Official Companion - Read
Book SynopsisWith 18 exclusive Munchkin(R) game rules! By gently -- and sometimes not so gently -- mocking the fantasy dungeon crawl and the sacred cows of pop culture, the Munchkin card game has stabbed and sneaked and snickered a path to the pinnacle of success. Along the way, it has sold millions of copies, been translated around the world, and spawned more than two dozen sequels and supplements. More fun than a Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment and more useful than a Chicken on Your Head, The Munchkin Book is a lighthearted and suitably snarky celebration of all things near and dear to the munchkin heart, featuring exclusive content from: Munchkin's designer and Steve Jackson Games president Steve Jackson Munchkin's signature artist John Kovalic (creator of web comic Dork Tower) Steve Jackson Games' "Munchkin Czar" Andrew Hackard CEO of Steve Jackson Games Phil Reed The Munchkin Book also includes a foreword by New York Times bestselling author and Forgotten Realms creator Ed Greenwood, an introduction by editor James Lowder, and contributions from notable mavens of geek culture, including: Andrew Zimmerman Jones * David M. Ewalt * Jennifer Steen * Joseph Scrimshaw * Randy Scheunemann * Jaym Gates * Dave Banks * Matt Forbeck * Christian Lindke * Bonnie Burton * Colm Lundberg * Liam McIntyre

Rutgers University Press Simulating Good and Evil: The Morality and
Book SynopsisSimulating Good and Evil shows that the moral panic surrounding violent videogames is deeply misguided, and often politically motivated, but that games are nevertheless morally important. Simulated actions are morally defensible because they take place outside the real world and do not inflict real harms. Decades of research purporting to show that videogames are immoral has failed to produce convincing evidence of this. However, games are morally important because they simulate decisions that would have moral weight if they were set in the real world. Videogames should be seen as spaces in which players may experiment with moral reasoning strategies without taking any actions that would themselves be subject to moral evaluation. Some videogame content may be upsetting or offensive, but mere offense does not necessarily indicate a moral problem. Upsetting content is best understood by applying existing theories for evaluating political ideologies and offensive speech. Trade Review"A thoughtful and challenging read. Schulzke leaves no stone unturned as he asks us to consider what values we bring to games with as players, consumers, and enthusiasts." -- Aaron Trammell * Editor-in-Chief of Analog Game Studies *"A thoughtful and challenging read. World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd I Ching
Book SynopsisThis book contains a dramatic and revealing translation of this ancient classic into English. The Chinese original is set side-by-side with the translation. Two things set this translation apart from all previous ones. First, archeological findings are used to uncover the meaning of passages obscured for thousands of years. Second, it preserves the flavor of the orignal in a poetic rendition. An introductory part of this book provides the historical and philosophical background to the I Ching. The story is told of the ancient Chinese civilization, pointing out events and figures mentioned in the I Ching. The undisguised face of the I Ching will appeal to the modern reader, who will read it in his or her own individual way, as poetry, as discoverer of self, or as soothsayer. It is in the grand tradition of the I Ching for different people to see different things. To Confucius, who was born in 550 B.C., it was a source of ethics.; To Leibnitz, the eighteenth-century inventor of calculus, it was the essence of binary mathematics.; To Jung Freud's rival in psychology, it was an explorer of the unconscious.; To some Wall Streeters, it predicts the stock market.;As a companion to this book, a computer software, Huang's I Ching offers computerized consultations of the I Ching. In the court of Zhou, they used to do this by counting stalks of the yarrow reed. Results of the court would indicate what passages to read. In later ages, yarrow-counting was replaced by coin-tossing, as a ritual closer to people's lifestyle. And now, the I Ching is ready for the future.
