Book Synopsis"It is thought provoking when you look at people's eyes and the things they have seen and the places they have been...there's so much to consider when looking at Anna's work." — Today Australia “To photograph an eye is to see into another world, a deeper emotional world. These photographs are like small windows into houses that we pass every day but never look inside. In a time where people are looking at screens and experiencing less eye contact with each other, I am happy to put out this book that takes a deeper look into the eyes of these famous faces.” – Anna Gabriel. It is said that the eyes are a window to the soul. They are what we first look at when we meet a stranger, and one of the most expressive parts of the human body. The eye speaks an intricate language, one that cannot be heard, only felt. The size of the pupil can signify focus or arousal. We meet each other’s eyes to show attentive interest, yet often feel discomfort when stared at: an evolutionary trait designed to alert us to a predatory gaze. This book is a testament to the power of the human eye. It gathers together Anna Gabriel’s collection of photographs, showing the close-up eyes of numerous well-known rock and film stars, including David Byrne, Helena Christensen, Willem Dafoe, The Edge, Noel Gallagher, Annie Lennox, Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Zephaniah, Peter Gabriel and many more.Trade Review"It is thought-provoking when you look at people's eyes and the things they have seen and the places they have been...there's so much to consider when looking at Anna's work." - Today Australia"They say the eyes are the windows to the soul and with that in mind, Peter Gabriel’s daughter Anna has compiled this unusual take on the traditional celebrity portrait that hones in exclusively on her subject’s peepers." - Classic Pop magazine

Damiani Arthur Grace: Communism(s): A Cold War Album

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor most people in the West, the realities of life behind the Iron Curtain have faded into caricatures of police state repression and bread lines. With the world seemingly again divided between democracies and authoritarian regimes, it is essential that we understand the reality of life in the Soviet Bloc. American photojournalist Arthur Grace (born 1947) was uniquely placed to provide that context. During the 1970s and 1980s Grace traveled extensively behind the Iron Curtain, working primarily for news magazines. One of only a small corps of Western photographers with ongoing access, he was able to delve into the most ordinary corners of people’s daily lives, while also covering significant events. Many of the photographs in this remarkable book are effectively psychological portraits that leave the viewer with a sense of the gamut of emotions in that era. Illustrated with over 120 black-and-white images—nearly all previously unpublished—Communism(s) gives an unprecedented glimpse behind the veil of a not-so-distant time filled with harsh realities unseen by nearly all but those that lived through it. Shot in the USSR, Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia and the German Democratic Republic, here are portraits of factory workers, farmers, churchgoers, vacationers and loitering teens juxtaposed with the GDR’s imposing Social Realist–designed apartment blocks, annual May Day Parades, Poland’s Solidarity movement (and the subsequent imposition of martial law) and the vastness of Moscow’s Red Square.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn up-close portrayal of late-’90s London’s many music scenes, from the pages of Sleazenation and beyond In the late 1990s, as a graduate from art school, the British photographer Ewen Spencer began making pictures for Sleazenation, in particular for the infamous listing pages at the rear of the magazine that were called "Savoir Vivre." The images were made in both black and white and color, and were immensely candid and full of characters that seemed to be everywhere at that time. London was at the epicenter of a cultural boom in this period. Small clubs, parties and discos were plentiful in venues from North to South, and Spencer was in a minicab and night bus taking in all the scenes—from Northern Soul, Acid House, Jungle and Garage to Nu Metal, South London blackout clubs and more. Spencer captures an era filled with love, lust and messy authenticity.

Damiani Niko J. Kallianiotis: Athênai, In Search of Home

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAthênai, In Search of Home expands Niko J. Kallianiotis’ first monograph America in a Trance, and the work produced in Pennsylvania, which for two decades became his second home. If America in a Trance was about his departure from Athens, Athênai, In Search of Home is about coming back to his roots, eager to assimilate within a place that over the years grew to be foreign but at the same time maintained its layers of familiarity. The photographs navigate through the metro areas of Athens within an utterly diverse setting, all the way to the periphery and within a more rural and industrial stage that is vital to the character and condition of Athens. Throughout the years the city and the surrounding territories have experienced their share of socio-economic struggles and topographic transformations that have altered its identity. Despite these facts the city still stands, at times proudly and at others solemn, but always fervent to maintain its uniqueness and its yearning for a new identity, in search of new home, within one that already exists. And the city of Athens in Kallianiotis’ photographs is elliptically delineated as a vibrant environment that binds together luxury and social inequality, through which a colourful language of images and symbols makes itself all the more present, a city unpredictable and saturated with history. Kallianiotis eloquently depicts in this series of photographs a city in which the temporal and the spatial elements often clash with each other, while conducting his research for a home that has changed over the years as much as he did.

Book SynopsisInfinite Realism brings together 99+1 photographs, many of them never published before, taken over a period of two decades from 1980 to the early 2000s. This volume forms an organic overview of Giovanni Chiaramonte s complex work on the representation of the landscape and the urban view, developed after a long period of theoretical reflection. In this exploration, Italy offers a privileged vantage point: its territory, which appears as a stratification of cultures and civilizations, tells the story of the whole of the West at a glance. Italy is therefore a contemporary space, as it encompasses different eras that are visible simultaneously. The Italian landscape serves as the matrix for reading and understanding the West as a whole its culture and destiny. It is the lens through which Chiaramonte explores.

It is a voyage into a secret universe inhabited by alien-like creatures. These stunningly beautiful, extremely diverse, and numerous organisms are unknown to most of us because they are invisible to the naked eye. However, they are wandering beneath the surface in waters all around us and are of vital importance for all life on earth. Phytoplankton (small plant-like cells) produce half of all the oxygen on earth by photosynthesis, like plants and trees do on land. Zooplankton form the base of the food chain of aquatic life. Plankton also play an important part in the global carbon cycle. They are currently threatened by climate change, global warming and the acidification of the oceans. Jan van Ijken photographed the plankton through microscopes, revealing the beauty and delicate structures of these minute organisms in the finest detail.Trade Review"The new book features a ton of never-before-seen photos that expose the sheer variety, wonder, and beauty of these organisms that inhabit all the waters around us." - Deeper Blue

University of Minnesota Press Inside the Spiral: The Passions of Robert

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisAn expansive and revelatory study of Robert Smithson’s life and the hidden influences on his iconic creations This first biography of the major American artist Robert Smithson, famous as the creator of the Spiral Jetty, deepens understanding of his art by addressing the potent forces in his life that were shrouded by his success, including his suppressed early history as a painter; his affiliation with Christianity, astrology, and alchemy; and his sexual fluidity. Integrating extensive investigation and acuity, Suzaan Boettger uncovers Smithson’s story and, with it, symbolic meanings across the span of his painted and drawn images, sculptures, essays, and earthworks up to the Spiral Jetty and beyond, to the circumstances leading to what became his final work, Amarillo Ramp. While Smithson is widely known for his monumental earthwork at the edge of the Great Salt Lake, Inside the Spiral delves into the arc of his artistic production, recognizing it as a response to his family’s history of loss, which prompted his birth and shaped his strange intelligence. Smithson configured his personal conflicts within painterly depictions of Christ’s passion, the rhetoric of science fiction, imagery from occult systems, and the impersonal posture of conceptual sculpture. Aiming to achieve renown, he veiled his personal passions and transmuted his professional persona, becoming an acclaimed innovator and fierce voice in the New York art scene.Featuring copious illustrations never before published of early work that eluded Smithson’s destruction, as well as photographs of Smithson and his wife, the noted sculptor Nancy Holt, and recollections from nearly all those who knew him throughout his life, Inside the Spiral offers unprecedented insight into the hidden impulses of one of modern art’s most enigmatic figures. With great sensitivity to the experiences of loss and existential strife that defined his distinct artistic language, this biographical analysis provides an expanded view of Smithson’s iconic art pilgrimage site and the experiences and works that brought him to its peculiar blood red water.Trade Review "Only someone who has immersed themselves in the life and art of Robert Smithson for forty years could have written a biography as deep and engaging as Inside the Spiral. Suzaan Boettger illuminates the artist’s religious thought, examines the complexities of his gender identity, and takes a psychoanalytic lens to his sources and esoteric symbolism, bringing coherence to our understanding of this remarkably complicated artist, his body of work, and his writings. A monumental achievement."—Jonathan Fineberg, University of the Arts, author of Modern Art at the Border of Mind and Brain "Suzaan Boettger’s long-awaited Inside the Spiral: The Passions of Robert Smithson is the first biography of this 'enantiomorphic' artist, whose oeuvre encompassed geological and sacred time alongside the moment of the snapshot, the 'dematerialized' theorizing and mapping of the non-site alongside the absolute site-specificity—viewable from outer space—of the Great Salt Lake. Boettger reveals fascinating and hitherto unexplored aspects of Smithson’s earliest formation, including his status as a 'replacement child' for a dead older brother, while her fearless exploration of the artist’s Christological bent, his hermeticism, and his difficult navigation of sexuality yields nuanced psychological insight. Unburdened by academic jargon, the work is supported by extensive reference to Smithson’s writings, notes, interviews, library, and other records, of which Boettger has long been recognized as the foremost scholar."—Judith Rodenbeck, University of California, Riverside "This book sheds important new light on Robert Smithson. Meticulously researched and wide-ranging in scope, it explores the intricate connections between Smithson’s personal history and his art. While revealing a great deal of new information about Smithson’s life and psychology, Suzaan Boettger also engages with his art in a focused and detailed way and writes about individual works with great perceptiveness. Readers will come away from this book with a fresh and enlarged understanding of Smithson’s life and art."—Jack Flam, editor of Robert Smithson: The Collected Writings"[An] extensive biography of an artist I have stood by for some fifty years which is impossible not to consider definitive, particularly in its investigation of the artist’s unconscious as well as conscious motives."—Joseph Masheck, The Brooklyn Rail "That his art appears larger after reading Inside the Spiral is as much credit to his own capacious imagination as it is to Boettger’s ingenious attempts to contain it."—Artforum"Inside the Spiral is one of the most informative and well written biographies I have ever had the pleasure of reading. To use the American vernacular, Suzaan Boettger can write like 'hot-damn'!" —Robert Maddox-Harle, Leonardo Reviews

Book SynopsisThe photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber is associated with a wide array of imagery: humanist portraits of artists, actors, and athletes; fashion spreads charged with emotion, irreverence, and nostalgia; lyrical tributes to eroticism and an arcadian vision of the American landscape. All these things—and golden retrievers, too. Since the very beginning, Weber has been accompanied on his travels by a pack of these benevolent canines, who have populated his photographs for fashion campaigns, prominent magazines, and the pages of his personal scrapbooks in equal measure. The Golden Retriever Photographic Society is Weber’s first career-spanning collection of these photographs, one he describes as his most personal. In the introduction to the monograph, Weber remarks, “People sometimes say to me, ‘In my next life, I want to come back as one of your dogs.’” Paging through this volume, we understand the sentiment. For five decades, these golden retrievers have been foils for Weber’s imagination, storybook characters in the expansive life he has created with wife, Nan Bush. Book SynopsisThis volume pays tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the greatest exponents of photography of the 20th century, through an unpublished comparison with Wilhelm von Gloeden and Fratelli Alinari: a comparison evocative, at times pointed, that reveals the recurrence of common themes. The interest in the Ancient and the sculptural approach to the photographic medium come alive in the choice of subjects, the definition of poses and the suspended atmospheres of the compositions, leading to the discovery of an unconventional idea of beauty and eros. The shots, inspired by the canons of classicism, invite questions about the themes of the body and sensuality and offer themselves as food for thought on how art, morality and spirituality change and evolve continuously in their mutual relationship.

Book SynopsisA magnificently illustrated showcase of the work of 300 women photographers from all over the world, from the invention of the medium to the dawn of the 21st century. As in many fields of art history, the work of women photographers has often been overlooked, and few of their names are now widely recognized. However, women were closely involved in all major photography movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, and have used the camera as an extraordinary tool for emancipation and experimentation. These are artists who never stopped documenting, questioning and transforming the world, breaking down social boundaries, challenging gender roles and expressing their imagination and sexuality. To capture the diversity of this global body of work, Luce Lebart and Marie Robert have invited 160 international women writers to contribute to this volume, which is a bold and beautifully illustrated manifesto as well as an invaluable work of reference.Trade Review'Even when they have been recognized in their lifetime, women photographers have been erased from the history of the medium. Book Synopsis"Robert Doisneau is commonly regarded as one of the pioneers of French street photography, so if you want a masterclass in the genre, this is the book for you."—Live Preston & Fylde Robert Doisneau (Gentilly, 1912 - Montrouge, 1994) is regarded as one of the founding fathers of French humanist photography and street photojournalism. Through his lens he was able to grasp the daily life of the men and women who populate Paris and its suburbs, presenting the city and its inhabitants with an ironic and light touch, but also with deep humanity and participation. The volume collects 130 black and white silver salt prints from the Atelier Robert Doisneau in Montrouge, which houses his photographic archive. Whether they are photographs made on commission or the result of his wanderings in Paris, the artist’s personal style is outlined through these shots, which mixes charm and imagination, but also a freedom of expression not far from surrealism. These pictures capture moments of daily happiness among ordinary people – such as the famous Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville, or “The kiss” – in which tenderness, sometimes veiled with melancholy, but also ever-present notes of humour are mixed. Text in English, Italian, and French. Published to accompany an exhibition at Rovigo, Palazzo Roverella 23 September 2021- 30 January 2022Trade Review"Robert Doisneau is commonly regarded as one of the pioneers of French street photography, so if you want a masterclass in the genre, this is the book for you." - Live Preston & Fylde

Book SynopsisFirst published by Aperture in 1988, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women is a groundbreaking classic by one of photography’s most renowned artists. Aperture is reoriginating it in a masterful facsimile edition that retains the purity of the original. At Twelve is Sally Mann’s revealing, collective portrait of twelve-year-old girls on the verge of adulthood. To be young and female in America is a time of tremendous excitement and social possibilities; it is a trying time as well, caught between childhood and adulthood, when the difference is not entirely understood. As Ann Beattie writes in her perceptive introduction, “These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose—what adults make of that pose may be the issue.” The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real: destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. The young women in Mann’s unflinching, large-format photographs, however, are n

  • William Claxton. Jazzlife

    Taschen GmbH William Claxton. Jazzlife

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1960, photographer William Claxton and noted musicologist Joachim E. Berendt traveled the United States hot on the trail of jazz. Through music halls and marching bands, side streets and subways, they sought to document this living, breathing, beating musical phenomenon that enraptured America across social, economic, and racial lines. The result of Claxton and Berendt’s collaboration was Jazzlife, much sought after by collectors and now revived in this fresh TASCHEN volume. From coast to coast, from unknown street performers to legends of the genre, this defining jazz journey explores just what made up this most original of American art forms. In New Orleans and New York, in St. Louis, Biloxi, Jackson, and beyond, Claxton’s rapturous yet tender images and accompanying texts examine jazz’s regional diversity as much as its pervasive vitality and soul. They show the music makers and the many spaces and people this music touched, from funeral parades to concert stages, from an elderly trumpet player to kids who hung from windows to catch a glimpse of a passing band. With portraits of Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters, Gabor Szabo, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and many more, this is as much a compelling slice of history as it is a loving personal tribute.Trade Review“Even in its new incarnation, Jazzlife remains a book unique in the jazz literature, and not only for its physical dimensions. Pore over its pages, and you're seeing jazz — and related music — practically everyone who mattered turns up in these pages.” * The Chicago Tribune *
