powerHouse Books,U.S. Larry Fink
Book SynopsisLarry Fink: Hands On / A Passionate Life of Looking is a 432-page encapsulation of Larry Fink’s master photos accompanied by insightful essays from Lucy Sante, Stephen Shore, Graydon and Ash Carter, Yolanda Cuomo, and publisher Daniel Power. Larry Fink: Hands On / A Passionate Life of Looking offers an unprecedented overview of Fink’s career and his profound influence in the Lisette Model world (under whom he was mentored) on photography and on broader American culture.Celebrated as a photographer of the people, Larry Fink is known for his impromptu, street-style black-and-white photographs that delve into societal complexities, class divides, and the essence of human connection. Throughout his career, which spanned from the 1950s to his passing in November 2023, Fink documented a broad spectrum of subjects, spanning from the glamorous scenes of Vanity Fair Oscar parties to the streets of impoverished Philadelphia neighborhoods. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to authentically portraying the human experience across diverse communities.Larry Fink: Hands On / A Passionate Life of Looking presents a comprehensive exploration of Fink''s remarkable career for the first time. Over his lifetime, Fink meticulously stored his images in boxes, where they often remained forgotten for months or even years. However, during the pandemic, Fink dedicated himself to combing through these boxes with the dream of creating a retrospective of his work: photographs and beat-style poetry. This endeavor gained momentum when Daniel Power, founder of powerHouse Books and a longtime collaborator of Fink, photographers Jonno Rattman and Jamie Cabreza, and art director Yolanda Cuomo joined Fink in his archival journey. They unearthed a trove of unseen treasures, resulting in a meticulously curated 432-page testament to Fink''s unparalleled creativity alongside his trademark jazz poetry. Fink’s vast repertoire includes photographs of celebrities like Jay-Z and Meryl Streep, protesters marching down streets, and boxers in the ring (Including a look into his other books, Boxing (1998), Runway (2000), Social Graces (2001), Forbidden Pictures (2004), and The Beats (2014)). This book reaches even further by including non-human subjects like intimate portraits of insects in their natural habitat and dead animals grotesquely displayed. Larry Fink''s distinctive signature - his raw and experimental approach, his spontaneity, his interest in class commentary, and his intimate perspective - are presented in a manner unprecedented in his body of work, applied to subject matter viewers have rarely seen Fink tackle. Each image, painstakingly selected, offers a poignant insight into Fink''s unwavering commitment to his craft and insatiable curiosity about the world.

Twin Palms Publishers Garry Winogrand: Winogrand Color
Book SynopsisRarely-seen color work from the preeminent master of postwar American street photography This monograph stands as a groundbreaking tribute to the early color work of renowned American photographer Garry Winogrand. While he is most recognized for his candid and lively black-and-white street photography, Winogrand's portfolio also includes an impressive collection of over 45,000 color slides captured between the early 1950s and the late 1960s. Using two cameras strapped to his chest—one loaded with color film and the other with black-and-white film—he extensively documented his surroundings between commercial assignments, developing and refining a distinct and progressively daring body of personal work. From the bustling streets of Manhattan to the shaded underside of Coney Island’s boardwalk to the expansive landscapes and open roads of the American West, Winogrand Color unveils a tender portrait of a version of the country that feels at once bygone and timeless. His snapshots of strangers exude an unparalleled sense of intimacy, offering poetic glimpses into everyday postwar America. Presenting 150 photographs selected from the archives at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, this is the first monograph dedicated in full to Winogrand’s vivid color photography. Born and raised in the Bronx, Garry Winogrand (1928–84) was a highly influential American photographer who came into prominence for his trailblazing contributions to street photography. His keen eye for human emotions and his ability to freeze spontaneous moments immortalized the essence of American society. His work continues to inspire and shape the field, leaving a lasting impact on both his contemporaries and future generations of photographers.

Taschen GmbH Miguel Rio Branco. Maldicidade
Book SynopsisIn Maldicidade, the city never sleeps. By dawn or dusk, in New York, Havana, Salvador da Bahia, or Tokyo, it is an environment fraught with yearning, aching with solitude, and fretful with fortunes never made. This searing urban portrait from visual artist Miguel Rio Branco draws upon his itinerant early years as the son of diplomats to reveal the common threads of struggle and loneliness in metropolises around the world. The images are impeccably captured, but the pictures are not always pretty. Rio Branco is not interested in documenting historic city landmarks, an impressive skyline, or the aspirational dreams that soar up towards it. Instead, he focuses his camera on the city’s refuse and margins—on that which it has thrown away and on those it has cast aside and disappointed. In stark frames or soft impressions, it is street sleepers, beggars, prostitutes, stray dogs, smashed cars, and shattered glass that characterize his urban impressions. While subtle details reveal the specificity of place, it is the commonality of urban experience at the heart of Rio Branco’s project. Light on local context or explanatory narrative, the images are instead meticulously arranged into one redolent sequence of a universal city. Working as if in the cutting studio, Rio Branco excels in the rhythm and succession of pictures, crafting evocative patterns of motif (decrepit buildings, lone figures, smashed-up cars); color (rich reds, dusty pinks, stark whites and blues); and form (an anguished street sleeper beside an ecstatic statue of a saint). Throughout, occasional pictures of women are proffered as sensual, hopeful reprieve, interspersing the grit and the grime in commanding portraits or up-close, supple nudes. At once incisive in its message and lyrical in its arrangement, Maldicidade focuses attention on the city’s ineludible magnetism, as much as on its alienation and inhumanity. Biting, bare-faced, and achingly beautiful, it is a collection in which all city dwellers will find something of themselves, or something they long to escape.
