GOST Books From the Heads of the Hollers
Book SynopsisWhile still in school, photographer Shelby Lee Adams was exposed to the images of the Farm Security Administration and its depiction of the crippling effects of the Depression in the American South. Adams immediately connected with the images and related to the subjects. He was later driven to create the work in From the Heads of the Hollers, a project he began in 1973. From the Heads of the Hollers is a collection of images of the people and culture of the secluded mountain life of Appalachia. ‘In the Eastern Kentucky mountains, I try and create a strong connection with those I’m drawn to. I find the most generous, direct and transparent people live in the hollers (a ‘holler’ is a narrow valley, usually with a single lane road, found in isolated mountainous areas). I learn from my subject’s habits and we work collaboratively, the photographs made are of subjects sitting or standing in a way that feels natural to them. In this manner, we make pictures. Folks get to know me and we communicate in many ways, again and again, over time. Mountain folks are generally modest and may seem somewhat shy; many are strongly devoted to their religious beliefs. Most are kind, sharing and patient. Each is unique.’

Circa Press Frank Rispoli - High Heels
Book SynopsisAs a young man, living in Manhattan in the 1970s and ‘80s, Frank Rispoli was drawn to the New Wave and Punk club scenes. Recognising the inherent performance of sexuality and desire in both fashion and club culture, he documented the intertwining of the two. Always with a camera strapped around his neck, he frequented Danceteria, Tier 3, Max’s Kansas City, Studio 54 and many other clubs in Soho, Chelsea, the Lower East Side, and Midtown. Rispoli asked female clubgoers, bar patrons, singers, and band members if he could photograph their shoes, utilising the staged sets, props, and bathrooms of the clubs, and the taxis, sidewalks, and rooftops of the city, as his backdrops. A selection of these photographs forms the basis of his first book – High Heels. Rispoli attributes his interest in women’s shoes to his inability, as a teenager, to look women in the eye and, due to his shyness, focusing on their feet instead. He drew further inspiration from the work of Guy Bourdin, and his advertising photography of the period. Rispoli continues, in his photographs, to capture the fun, freedom, and performance found in other outsider communities and events, such as Wigstock, and the burgeoning art scene in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Unicorn Publishing Group Faith in the City of London
Book SynopsisThe mention of ‘Faith in The City of London’ conjures up images of ceremonial events in St. Paul's Cathedral, but there are over 40 other Anglican churches, as well as Jewish, Dutch, Catholic and Welsh places of worship squeezed in between The Square Mile's towers of commerce. Intrigued by this incongruity, highly acclaimed London photographer Niki Gorick has gained unique access to capture the day-to-day workings of these ancient buildings and discovered a vibrant, diverse spiritual life stretching out into many faiths. This is a book about London and Londoners from a completely new angle, revealing a rich mix of characters, traditions and human interest stories. From weddings, communions, evangelical bible studies and Livery company carol services, to Knights Templar investitures, huge wet fish displays, Afghan music and vicars wielding knives, the photographs show an extraordinary range of spiritual goings-on and charismatic personalities. For the first time, it's possible to get a real insight into a side of London's Square Mile not dominated by money-making, where City workers are trying to connect to life's deeper meanings and where religious traditions and questions of faith are still very much alive.Trade Review"I am delighted that this book reveals and celebrates the city of London's very active and diverse spiritual life. It is an unheralded side to London's financial center that deserves to be better known and appreciated."--The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor Alderman William Russell

Distributed Art Pub Matthew LópezJensen The Work and the Water
Book SynopsisFor the Erie Canal's 200th anniversary, López-Jensen's series centers the unseen labor that keeps the waterway operationalThe debut photobook The Work and the Water: Labor and Landscapes along the Erie Canal by Matthew López-Jensen (born 1980) is a work of environmental social practice centering the unseen labor required to keep the Erie Canal, a 524-mile inland waterway in upstate New York, operational. Over 40 photographs are accompanied by commentary from the more than 400 employees who work on the canal year-round, often out of view and in hazardous conditions. As the first artist-in-residence with the canal in its 200-year history, López-Jensen visited every lock in the system from Buffalo to Albany, from Whitehall to Seneca Falls. The archive of images he created helps communicate the potentials of the canal as a site for environmental restoration while also conveying the scale of this colossal piece of infrastructure that transformed the region in ways that are still felt today.

Oro Editions Archive, Matrix, Assembly: The Photographs of
Book SynopsisArchive, Matrix, Assembly: The Photographs of Thomas Struth 1978-2018 presents the first comprehensive, systematic theory of contemporary German artist Thomas Struth's main body of photographic work from its beginnings in the late 1970s until his most recent work in 2018. The book presents a unique, evolutionary understanding of the work, proposing that it has established three stages of production: archive, matrix, and assembly. Together the three stages form a developmental system that characterises the individual photographs, their relation to their subject matter, and how they form larger, significant collections of images. In covering all phases of the artist's work, it also develops a comprehensive critical reading of the work, serves as a monograph of the artist, and provides an extensive analysis of the photographs at all stages, including the less discussed, more recent photography, which is placed on par with his earlier work for which Struth first became internationally renowned.

Trope Publishing Co. Natkin: The Moment of Truth
Book SynopsisEvery photographer knows the moment of truth, and every picture tells a story. Over the past four decades, Paul Natkin has had a front-row seat for music history, attending over 10,000 shows and concerts to chronicle the excitement and excess of the music industry.Since the 1970s, he has photographed most of the major music stars of the last half of the 20th century, shooting album covers for Ozzy Osbourne and Johnny Winter and countless magazine covers, including Newsweek, People, Spin and Ebony. The Moment of Truth is Natkin’s documentary as a witness to the music industry during his illustrious 40-plus years as a photographer and fan.Trade Review"[Natkin's] images have appears in so many publications and on so many album covers that music fans have almost certainly seen his work, whether they know it or not. The Moment of Truth collects some of his favorite photos and the stories behind them." - Chicago Reader "The interesting thing about Paul, he was just always there. We never really had to officially organize things with him, but he always was just there anyway taking great shots of us—from the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s to today. And it's always been great material. He's a part of rock history." – Rick Nielsen, Cheap Trick “When you’re talking about Paul and you’re talking about photo shoots and he’s showing you some old stuff and then you see a photo of Sinatra in between images of Guns N' Roses and Slaughter, you’re like, who is this guy? We recognized he’s not entering our world, we’re entering his. And that’s just the thing, as time went on and we understood what Paul had already done and how great he is at what he does, it was always a pleasure to know he was still hanging around.” – Steve Gorman, The Black Crowes "I've always liked working with him because, with most photographers, they come to you and ask for one photo and then they take 1,000. Paul would just do a few clicks on his camera and say, 'I've got it.' I like the way he does his work and he doesn't need to take all day to get one great photograph. To be honest, I haven’t seen anything yet of Paul's work that I don’t like. I think he’s such a great professional that when he takes the pictures, his camera takes exactly what he sees and he has a sharp eye." – blues legend Buddy Guy "In conversation, Natkin is self-effacing, wickedly funny and laid back. Though he will tell you there are other photographers better than him, that’s his modesty talking. There is a reason for his success. Just look at a Natkin photo and you will feel a powerful intimacy."– Rick Kogan, Chicago TribuneTable of Contents Metal Folk Classic Rock Next Wave Soul + R&B Jazz Blues Country Gospel Rap + Hip Hop Adult World

Book SynopsisUsing his camera as a passport, Encounters is Tom Bowden’s (known as TBow) portrait diary of human life in America. Known for his inimitable style, TBow somehow turns potentially unwilling subjects into compliant participants in his portrait making. Encounters is a unique look at people, documented through the lens of an ambitious observer of the human condition. In her essay in the book, the renowned documentary photographer Maggie Steber writes: “Nowadays, much of street photography is detached. Not TBow’s. He is a visual minstrel and troubadour. People are comfortable with him and they reveal their stories." Interspersed throughout the book are short texts that tell stories about some of his subjects. For the portrait of “Scott with His Pistol, Austin Texas, 2016,” TBow writes: “This photograph was made the day ‘open carry’ was legalized in Texas. I asked Scott what he thought about gun control and he told me, “Gun control is knowing where your gun is pointed at all times.”

Radius Books Julie Blackmon: Midwest Materials
Book SynopsisA photographic fever dream of America’s Midwest, from the author of Homegrown and Domestic Vacations For her third monograph, Midwest Materials, Julie Blackmon has created a new body of work that sparkles with the wit, dark humor and irony for which the photographer has gained such renown. Finding insight and inspiration in the seeming monotony of her “generic American hometown” of Springfield, Missouri, Blackmon constructs a captivating, fictitious world that is both playful and menacing. “I think of myself as a visual artist working in the medium of photography,” Blackmon notes, “and my assignment is to chart the fever dreams of American life.” Midwest Materials follows Domestic Vacations (Radius Books, 2008) and Homegrown (Radius Books, 2014). Julie Blackmon (born 1966) pursued studies in art education and photography at Missouri State University. Her photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art; George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Toledo Museum of Art; Portland Art Museum; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and numerous others. She is represented by Robert Mann Gallery, Haw Contemporary and Fahey Klein, among others. Almost other-worldy, and striking in their humanity and emotional affect, the images in this resonant book bear returning to again and again.Busch's work secured public notice in 1984 with the publication of Working Men. As art writer Peter Ireland observes in his essay, In the early 1970s . . . the social documentary tradition was the reigning, respectable approach, and Busch's work remains foundational, even after half a century retaining a vividness and force in its resistance to any tendency to idealise in his portraiture, as this book so clearly attests.'A handsome, large-format book, beautifully designed by Seven, this book serves as both an introduction to the work of a hugely influential and widely regarded figure in photography in Aotearoa New Zealand and a celebration of his place in our art history.

Les Fugitives Selfies
Book SynopsisTaking selfies is not the exclusive preserve of millennials. In Selfies, the niece of French philosopher Simone Weil, also daughter of one of the most brilliant mathematicians of the 20th c., gives a playful twist to the concept of self-representation: taking her cue from self-portraits by women artists, ranging from the 13th c. through the Renaissance to Frida Kahlo and Vivian Maier, Weil has written a memoir in pieces, that is yet unified. Each picture acts as a portal to a significant moment from Weil's own life (as schoolgirl, writer, daughter and mother) and sparks anecdotes tangentially touching on topical issues (from the Palestinian question to the pain of a mother witnessing her son's psychotic breakdown, to the subtle manifestations of anti-Semitism, to ageism, genetics, and a Jewish dog...). Switching from poignant to light-hearted, with Weil's trademark irony and self-deprecating humour, Selfies is a sophisticated, `delightful read', with heartwrenching tendencies. (Front cover photograph: VIVIAN MAIER, Self-portrait, New York, NY, 1955 copyright Estate of Vivian Maier, Courtesy Maloof Collection and Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York. End page photograph of the author by Marc Riboud, courtesy of Catherine Riboud, Paris.)Trade Review'A beguiling series of vignettes, by turns wry, amusing and disturbing, inspired by self-portraits by women artists and reflecting on the images they provoke. An illuminating survey of the author's various identities, in a fractured world, as mother, lover and writer.' - Michele Roberts. 'A new genre is born: the short selfie collection! Lively, inventive, compassionate, aching, morally complex and troubling, I loved these self-portraits more than anything I've read lately.' - Lauren Elkin. 'In Selfies Sylvie Weil uses a work of an artist to set the theme for a snapshot of a past episode in her life. These selfies are exquisite vignettes - intelligent, witty, observant, sometimes poignant, and beautifully written - the elegance of the original French apparent in this fine English translation.' - Piers Paul Read . 'If yesteryear's painted self-portraits were as concerned with pose and presentation as are today's phone selfies, Sylvie Weil is the ideal analyst of what may lie behind the image. In a sequence of transpositions of the work of women portraitists from the Renaissance onwards, she applies their appearance to her experience, and implies a continuity in women's self-presentation. Like them, Sylvie Weil has an illustrious heritage (daughter to Andre a brilliant and renowned mathematician; niece to Simone, a brilliant and renowned philosopher). Unlike them, she moves from the visual to the verbal, expressive of both profound truth and imagination.' - Amanda Hopkinson.Reviews of Sylvie Weil's 'At Home with Andre and Simone', published by Northwestern University Press, USA, 2010 : `...an elegant and witty memoir-cum-reflection.' -The Spectator. 'Sylvie Weil's memoir is simply one of the best books I've read in the past decade. At turns poignant, poetic, and deeply personal' - Paul LeClerc, president, The New York Public Library. 'The missing link in the story of Andre and Simone Weil is Sylvie Weil, daughter of the great mathematician, niece of the legendary philosopher. In her memoirs... the 'merely' personal is transformed into something rich and strange.' -Palle Yourgrau, author of A World Without Time: The Forgotten Legacy of Goedel and Einstein.Table of Contents13 chapters including Self-portrait at the organ, Self-portrait as a capital letter, Self-portrait with postcard, Self-portrait as a visitor, Self-portrait with portrait of my son, Self-portrait as a Chinese mushroom, Self-portrait with dog, Stabat mater, Self-portrait as an author, Self-portrait on the beach, Self-portrait as a maker of idols, Self-portraits in fugitive mirrors, Photobomb selfie.

JRP Ringier Hannes Schmid: Real Stories
Book SynopsisBest known as the photographer for the 1990s Marlboro Man (as appropriated by Richard Prince), Hannes Schmid (born 1946) has been active for decades in various genres of photography--principally fashion, rock and documentary. Early on in his career, Schmid blurred the boundaries between commissioned projects and personal work, and by the 1970s, was focused simultaneously on documenting cannibal folk culture in Indonesia and making classic portraits of bands such as Kraftwerk, Queen, Blondie, Depeche Mode and AC/DC. The latter body of work, done between 1978 and 1984, effectively tells the story of rock music between these years; Schmid spent the best part of a decade on tour with over 250 bands. Soon after, he entered the worlds of fashion and advertising photography, producing his famous icon--the Marlboro cowboy--in 1993, a figure that reached mass audiences and later percolated up to the contemporary art scene thanks to its adoption by Richard Prince, in the artist's later series of Marlboro appropriations. In addition to his photographic projects, Schmid's work also comprises films and installation projects. Real Stories is published to coincide with a retrospective at Kunstmuseum Bern, and includes a large selection of Schmid's photographic works--400 of which are reproduced in color--along with essays that contextualize his work and address his position as an artist working inside photography.

Lars Muller Publishers Karl Blossfeldt: Variations
Book SynopsisIn the 1890s, Berlin artist, sculptor and teacher Karl Blossfeldt started to photograph plants, seeds and other illustrative material from nature for the purpose of teaching his students about the patterns and designs found in natural forms. His close-ups of the smallest plant parts, magnified up to thirty times their natural size, are startling as the plants appear geometric and sculptural. Published in 1928, his first collection of photographs Urformen der Kunst (later translated into English as Art Forms in Nature) became an international bestseller and remains one of the most significant photo books of the twentieth century. Karl Blossfeldt: Variations is the first book-length monograph to examine the reception of Blossfeldt’s work. Drawing on unpublished materials, it analyzes the photographs’ replication in teaching mate- rials, pattern books and art books, and also in the pages of the illustrated press. The six chapters of the richly illustrated study trace the paths Blossfeldt’s legendary plant motifs described as specimens, illustrations, patterns, analogues, models and abstractions from 1890 to 1945. Thematic excursions into the present, illustrating the rediscovery of Blossfeldt’s motifs in design and architecture over the past twenty years, offer a contemporary perspective on the famous German photographer.

Taschen GmbH Herlinde Koelbl. Angela Merkel. Portraits
Book SynopsisAngela Merkel: an era ends—and with it a project unique in the world. Between 1991 and 2021 this remarkable politician was photographed year after year, with a short hiatus, by Herlinde Koelbl. Each time they came together, a headshot and a three-quarter-length shot were taken before a plain white background; images that document with authenticity the astonishing ascent of a 37-year-old political outsider to one of the most powerful politicians in the free world. This long-term photo study strikingly shows how the traces of power changed Merkel, who at the start of this extraordinary photographic ritual was still almost 15 years away from becoming the first woman chancellor of Germany. What did she have to learn, how did she have to change in order to persist, indeed to survive politically? How did politics impact her private life? The renowned photo artist succeeded in capturing Merkel’s human side through other means apart from her camera lens. Usually extremely reserved, the politician answered Koelbl’s questions with such surprising openness and intimacy that, according to the Guardian, the two women share “one of the most unusual relationships in modern politics.” Herlinde Koelbl presents a documentary portrait in words and images, of a kind that does not exist for any other global leader. It travels through time, spanning the Angela Merkel epoch—from the first year to the last. It is the portrait of an extreme physical and psychological transformation, and the written record of a unique rapport.Trade Review“[A] 30-year art project tracing how politics shaped Merkel.” * nytimes.com *“A subtly revealing 30-year chronicle of the effects of power on an individual who wields it.“ * The Art Newspaper *“In Angela Merkel: Portraits 1991–2021, photographer Herlinde Koelbl gathers three decades’ worth of portraits of the German chancellor, tracing the extraordinary arc of her political career.” * vogue.com *“A landmark study on the visible effects of power on a shy East German physicist who became the world’s most powerful woman.” * irishtimes.com *“One of the most unusual relationships in modern politics.” * The Guardian *
