Book SynopsisIn 1914, a young midwesterner quit his railroad job to crack the Hollywood motion picture boom. Impressed by his energy and honesty in his role as Lincoln, D.W. Griffith made him his assistant for Intolerance. Griffith then made Joe a director. He swiftly progressed to a preeminent position in the industry, directing some of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 1920''s including Douglas Fairbanks, Fatty Arbuckle, and Rudolph Valentino. Versatility played an important role in Joe''s rich creative life inside the studios. His understanding of the mechanics of motion-picture film led him to develop and be granted a patent for teaching speech to the deaf by visualizing sound. He pioneered sound short-subjects for the Vitaphone Studios in Brooklyn and later directed WWII training films for the Army Signal Corps in Astoria. Henabery contributed, not only as a director, but also as a researcher, writer, make-up artist/actor, architect, scenic designer, and special-effects innovator. His autobTrade ReviewIt's an extraordinary feat, one that should be appreciated by students of the movies. Henabery's unpretentious manner is ingratiating and the history he imparts is unequaled. * Rapport *Too few first-hand accounts of the silent era exist, making this book valuable for insight into early filmmaking. * The Silent Film Monthly *...captivating...illustrates a cutthroat motion picture industry...one of many excellent Hollywood memoirs. * The Silents Majority *...offers important insights on Griffith, as well as stories about Fairbanks, Valentino, and Fatty Arbuckle. * Curio *For a book as important as this to surface so many years after its author's death is nothing short of a miracle. Joseph Henabery is a fascinating chronicler of a colourful era—and his analysis of the other books on the subject is worth the cost of this one. -- Kevin Brownlow

This second edition of the first book-length analysis finds in Carpenter''s films a vision of a profound but unexpected order in the universe. The author analyzes Carpenter''s early independent work, his made-for-television movies, his big Hollywood films (The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Stephen King''s Christine, Starman), his more recent independent work (Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness, They Live), and his contributions to films he did not direct. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAcclaimed in an international critics poll as one of the ten best films ever made, Stanley Kubrick''s 2001: A Space Odyssey has nonetheless baffled critics and filmgoers alike. Its reputation rests largely on its awesome special effects, yet the plot has been considered unfathomable. Critical consensus has been that Kubrick himself probably didn''t know the answers. Leonard Wheat''s Kubrick''s 2001: A Triple Allegory reveals that Kubrick did know the answers. Far from being what it seems to bea chilling story about space travel2001 is actually an allegory, hidden by symbols. It is, in fact, a triple allegory, something unprecedented in film or literature. Three allegoriesan Odysseus (Homer) allegory, a man-machine symbiosis (Arthur Clarke) allegory, and a Zarathustra (Nietzsche) allegoryare simultaneously concealed and revealed by well over 200 highly imaginative and sometimes devilishly clever symbols. Wheat decodes each allegory in rich detail, revealing the symbolism in numerous characters, sequences, and scenes. In bringing Kubrick''s secrets to light, Wheat builds a powerful case for his assertion that 2001 is the grandest motion picture ever filmed.Trade Review...his conclusions...ought to be pondered by everyone with a serious interest in the film...Indeed, part of the fun of reading his book is deciding whether, detail by detail, one agrees or disagrees with Wheat's specific reading...Wheat's readings of the Nietzschean allegory are perhaps even more compelling...a valuable contribution to our understanding of the best science fiction film ever. * Science Fiction Studies *All of Wheat's correlations are well worth pondering. Book SynopsisOriginally a Hong Kong-based director, John Woo is now considered one of the ten most successful directors working in American films, receiving world-wide attention for his highly stylized violence in films such as The Killer (1989), Hard-Boiled (1992), Face/Off (1997), and Mission Impossible 2 (2000). While Woo is widely regarded as a master action director, scant attention has been paid to the manner in which Woo''s films reflect the director''s religious and ethical concerns. Through an examination of representative films from the director''s Hong Kong and American periods, Michael Bliss demonstrates that Woo should be regarded as a predominantly religious director, in whose films action is the vehicle by virtue of which a concern with spirituality is dramatized. Book SynopsisUnlike other books on Martin Scorsese that favor the discussion of broad themes and plot summaries, Scorsese Up Close: A Study of the Films also looks at the cinematic text of the great director''s films. With a scrutiny comparable to the detail Scorsese brings to the shooting and editing process, author Ben Nyce examines particular shots or sequences of shots in many of the director''s works. By focusing on these key components, Nyce explains how the visual and aural elements of such scenes dramatize Scorsese''s singular vision. Nyce first discusses several of the early works that established Scorsese as a filmmaker, beginning with a short student film, What''s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? Subsequent chapters focus on individual films in the Scorsese canon, including Mean Streets, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence, Bringing out the Dead, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull. Nyce''s close attention to the details within each of these films will satisfy fans and students alike, especially those who share a passion for Scorsese''s artistry and an appreciation for the craft of his filmmaking. Illustrated with photos.Trade ReviewThere have been more than two dozen books already written about director Martin Scorsese, so do we really need another one? If it's Ben Nyce's Scorsese Up Close: A Study of the Films (Scarecrow Press), the answer is an unequivocal yes. In only 176 pages, the author gives us a concise study of the cinematic text of the Scorsese oeuvre, from his early student works through Bringing Up the Dead, with a brief postscript on Gangs of New York . This is a perfect introduction to films like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Age of Innocence and all the maestro's other pictures. I really like Nyce's ability to study each picture through certain key sequences, giving us an overview of each project's roots and reception. I also like the fact that Nyce gives high ratings to two of my favorite (and underrated) Scorsese movies - New York, New York and New York Stories: Life Lessons. This book is also a nice supplement to the newly released five-disc Scorsese Collection on DVD. * The National Board Of Review *Table of ContentsPart 1 Acknowledgments Part 2 To the Reader Part 3 Chapter 1: Beginnings Chapter 4 WHAT'S A NICE GIRL LIKE YOU DOING IN A PLACE LIKE THIS?; IT'S NOT JUST YOU MURRAY!; THE BIG SHAVE; WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR?; BOX CAR BERTHA Part 5 Chapter 2: A New Voice Chapter 6 MEAN STREETS; ITALIANAMERICAN Part 7 Chapter 3: A Career Choice Chapter 8 ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE Part 9 Chapter 4: The Strange and Familiar Chapter 10 TAXI DRIVER Part 11 Chapter 5: A New, New Musical Chapter 12 NEW YORK, NEW YORK; THE LAST WALTZ; AMERICAN BOY Part 13 Chapter 6: Bloodrope Chapter 14 RAGING BULL Part 15 Chapter 7: Empty Spaces Chapter 16 THE KING OF COMEDY Part 17 Chapter 8: The Bad Ladies Chapter 18 AFTER HOURS Part 19 Chapter 9: An Homage and a Career Choice Chapter 20 THE COLOR OF MONEY Part 21 Chapter 10: The Agony on the Hill Chapter 22 THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST Part 23 Chapter 11: The Artist as Agonist Chapter 24 LIFE LESSONS Part 25 Chapter 12: The Real Crew Chapter 26 GOODFELLAS Part 27 Chapter 13: Prelude to Rape Chapter 28 CAPE FEAR Part 29 Chapter 14: A Life Unlived Chapter 30 THE AGE OF INNOCENCE Part 31 Chapter 15: The Mob Again Chapter 32 CASINO Part 33 Chapter 16: The Buddhist Soul Chapter 34 KUNDUN Part 35 Chapter 17: The Urban Saint Chapter 36 BRINGING OUT THE DEAD Part 37 Conclusion Part 38 Postscript:GANGS OF NEW YORK Part 39 Bibliography Part 40 Index

  • William Beaudine

    Scarecrow Press William Beaudine

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWilliam Beaudine began his tenure in film as an assistant to the legendary D. W. Griffith. At the height of his career, Beaudine worked for every major studio and directed many greats of the silent era including Mabel Normand, George Sidney, Laura LaPlante, and Tom Mix. When Mary Pickford returned to the screen after a year-long hiatus, she chose Beaudine to direct her comeback film, Little Annie Rooney. Beaudine''s career continued through the sound era and well into golden age of television and beyond, where he worked on such programs as The Green Hornet and Lassie. In his unsurpassed employment of 60 years in the business, Beaudine racked up more than 500 films and in excess of 350 television programs. Until his death at age 78, he was the oldest active director in the business. Just before he died, The Canadian, his 1926 film starring Thomas Meighan, was acknowledged as one of the best films of the pre-sound era and received the Film Critics Award of the New York Arts Institute. In this detailed biography, author Wendy Marshall chronicles Beaudine''s swift rise through the ranks, his triumph as one of the most successful directors of British comedies, his accumulation and loss of personal fortunes, his fall from fame, and his prolific work in television. Marshall corrects much misinformation that has been written about the director and has compiled the most complete list of his directorial credits to date. This volume will serve as the ultimate authority on William Beaudine''s life and career.Trade ReviewWilliam Beaudine: From Silents to Television by Wendy L. Marshall is a real eye opener. I have newborn respect for the artistry and professionalism that Beaudine brought to film because of this book....Wendy L. Marshall is William Beaudine's granddaughter and, while she's objective—a rare feat for a granddaughter—she gives us a personal portrait that none of the other books on directors can boast. She is committed to getting his story down and she does so in an appealingly professional manner. At times she does tell us her relationship with her grandfather, and these warm moments add much to the text. She does not, however, go overboard. She's a film historian, foremost....I reveled in learning about Beaudine, and the author does not disappoint on this front....this unique study will open up a whole new side of Hollywood. And it finally gives the director the respect he deserves, for his amazing outpouring of films that on the whole were quite good in spite of the budgets. * Classic Images *...Beaudine was a true professional, yet over the years much misinformation has been spread about his prolific career, which this massive, all-encompassing biography at last re-dresses....a definitive study that not only chronicles the making of Beaudine's many films, but also captures the essence of the man. Superb! FIVE STARS> * Film Review *Serious film studies tend to be either theory-centered works or histories of the evolution of filmmaking based on an artist's life. Wendy L. Marshall's fine book William Beaudine: From Silents to Television is an entertaining, informative example of the latter....This biography offers a useful look at the hard work, care, and joy that could go into directing...The author offers a fascinating study...I recommend it for a personal or university library and for any readers interested in the vital, but unsung, contributions of the bread-and-butter film makers. * The Journal of Popular Culture *...both fascinating and informative, a book that can be read by anyone remotely interested in film to those constantly working in the industry itself....a refreshingly good humoured biography...an extremely well-researched book, certain to be the 'Bible' on Beaudine. * Scope: An Online Journal of Film and Television Studies *...Beaudine was a worthy film pioneer and merits this quiet, inspiring, and deeply affectionate tribute. Book SynopsisFrom What''s Up, Tiger Lily? to Match Point, Woody Allen''s work has generated substantial interest among scholars and professionals who have written extensively about the director. In The Films of Woody Allen: Critical Essays, Charles L.P. Silet brings together two-dozen scholarly articles that address the core of Allen''s work from a variety of cultural and theoretical perspectives. With a special emphasis on his films of the 1980s, this collection includes both general essays that examine various themes and issues encompassed in Allen''s repertoire, as well as discussions that focus on one or two specific films. General essays explore Allen''s Jewish background as a religious and cultural facet, his apparent love affair with New York City, and his relation to various strains of humor_particularly American film humor, but also Allen''s broad use of such traditional comic tropes as irony and parody. The essays on individual films include examinations of some of Allen''s most signifiTrade Review...these essays are exhilarating because of sharp and loving insights...laugh-out-loud cheerful...The book simply cannot lose....Highly recommended. * CHOICE, Vol. 44, No. 6 (February 2007) *Twenty-four contributions from film scholars critically examine the cinema of Woody Allen. Some essays are general in scope, examining larger themes and issues in Allen's films, while others focus on one or two of his more significant works. The emphasis is on films of the 1980s. The essays were previously published in various journals. Book SynopsisMany of Stanley Kubrick''s films are often interpreted as cold and ambiguous. Whether viewing Barry Lyndon, 2001, The Shining, or Eyes Wide Shut, there is a sense in which these films resist their own audiences, creating a distance from them. Though many note the coldness of Kubrick''s films, a smaller number attempt to explore exactly how his body of work elicits this particular reaction. Fewer still attempt to articulate what it might mean to feel Stanley Kubrick''s films. In The Kubrick Facade, Jason Sperb examines the narrative ambiguity of the director''s filmsfrom the voice-over narration in early works, including the once forgotten Fear and Desireto the blank faces of characters in his later ones. In doing so, Sperb shows how both devices struggle in vain to make sense of the chaos and sterility of the cinematic surface. All thirteen of Stanley Kubrick''s feature-length films are discussed in chronological order, from the little-seen and long-neglected Fear and Desire to the posthumous release of Eyes Wide Shut. Sperb also discusses Kubrick''s importance to Steven Spielberg''s AI. While exploring all of Kubrick''s films, the author concentrates in particular on The Killing, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. This is also the first book-length study that focuses considerable attention on Fear and Desire and its relevance to Kubrick''s larger body of work. In this respect, The Kubrick Facade is one of the first truly comprehensive books on narrative in the maverick director''s films. It is also the first book to integrate a discussion of AI, and the first to fully explore the importance of the consistent visual emphasis on blank, silent faces in his post-Lolita films.Trade Review...examines the 'narrative ambiguity' of the director's films, 'from the voice-over narration in early works to the blank faces and characters in later ones.' * Film Review, August 2007 *...presents well-founded points...hardcore Kubrick fans and/or serious cinephiles will want to own [this book]... * Cinema Retro *Ambitious, concise, convincing, and tightly argued, this book suggests Sperb as a formidable scholar with an amazing career ahead of him. Book SynopsisFrom his early days as a film editor at RKO studios, where he helped Orson Welles shape Citizen Kane, to his success as a director and producer of musical blockbusters of the 1960s, Robert Wise had a long and illustrious film career. Unlike contemporaries such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford or Howard Hawks, however, Wise''s films lack any clearly discernible characteristics to signify his work. There are few striking camera angles or visual flourishes that might distract from the primary obligation to present the story. And like Hawks, Wise never specialized in one or two genres, but brought his directing skills to all manner of films. His work as a director resists auteur categorization, and that is a chief reason why some critics have been unduly negative in their consideration of his work.In The Films of Robert Wise, Richard Keenan examines the nearly forty features that represent the director''s careerfrom Curse of the Cat People in 1944 to A Storm in Summer (2001), the only televiTrade ReviewThe author is generally evenhanded in granting measured attention to each of Wise's films. In this work, Ganguly (U. of Colorado) examines Ray's negotiations with history and modernity in the six major films he made between 1955 and 1970: Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar, Charulata, Aranyer Din Ratri, and Pratidwandi. Overall, Ganguly sets himself the task of examining how Ray's films convey the filmmaker's belief that the modern is best understood as a total experience in relation to how people express themselves in a changing society, although more specific concerns such as Ray's preoccupation with subjectivity in contexts such as education, urban culture, and the management of grief; the nature of action in a society suspended between apathy and revolution; and writing as a form of female discourse frequently intrude. Book SynopsisOliver Stone has written and directed many memorable films while also developing a reputation for tackling controversial subjects, such as the Turkish prison system (Midnight Express), the Vietnam war (Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July), insider trading (Wall Street), presidential assassination (JFK), and a voyeuristic media (Natural Born Killers). Along the way, Stone has been nominated for more than 10 Academy Awards and three times received Oscars for his work. In The Oliver Stone Encyclopedia, James M. Welsh and Donald M. Whaley provide an overarching evaluation of Stone's work as screenwriter, producer, and director. While the entries in this volume address all of the usual aspects of Stone's career, they also explore new avenues of critical evaluation, especially influences such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Buddhism, which Stone converted to in the 1990s. In addition, this volume traces Stone's obsession with Latin American politics, evident in his film Salvador (1986), his screenplay for Alan Parker's Evita (1996), and the documentaries Commandante (2003), Looking for Fidel (2004), and South of the Border (2010). Each entry is followed by a bibliography of published sources, both in print and online. A comprehensive and engaging examination of the director, The Oliver Stone Encyclopedia will appeal to scholars and fans alike as the most comprehensive reference on this director's body of work.Trade ReviewThe entries are well written and thoughtful. ... This work is recommended for comprehensive public and academic library film collections. * American Reference Books Annual *This detailed, well-cited work presents the minutiae of Stone’s philosophies and career, particularly in relation to five themes: corporate greed, Vietnam, U.S. foreign policy and Latin America, corruption in politics and government, and the media. While it’s not unbiased—Welsh and Whaley are confessed fans of Stone ... it is concise. Its goal is to be a resource of fans and scholars alike. ... Recommended for larger public libraries and academic libraries supporting a film studies program. * Booklist *Welsh (independent scholar) and Whaley (formerly, Salisbury Univ.), who wrote all the entries in this volume, pride themselves on having created a personalized encyclopedia rather than an objective, authoritative work. They aim "to re-create the intellectual world behind [Oliver] Stone's films" by researching the "literary, cinematic, philosophical" sources that have influenced the filmmaker. The authors offer their essay on Gabriel García Márquez as a model; other examples examine Viva Zapata, James Dean, The Red Badge of Courage, and Sam Peckinpah in the context of Stone's work, e.g., Dean and Peckinpah as inspirations for Natural Born Killers. The encyclopedia also contains many brief entries for actors, photographers, and others with whom Stone has worked. The longest entries, which run several pages, are devoted to Stone's films, including the background, plot synopsis, critique, and description of the critical reception of each title. A few entries seem tenuous, e.g., Camille Paglia is included, apparently on the basis of having referenced Stone's The Doors in a review of a book about the band. The focus on cultural texts and figures that have influenced the director, a cultural icon himself, make this encyclopedia a unique addition for film studies collections. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers. * CHOICE *The A-Z entries are enjoyable, not a word I usually use for an encyclopedia. Going back to the print versus online encyclopedia arguments, this encyclopedia has the true 'browsing' quality which the directness of the online encyclopedia lacks, and probably, will forever lack. Not only do the A-Z entries include all of the films, producers, actors, personalities, etc., but there are entries for notable films that Stone has influenced (doubtless there are many others). ... There are numerous black and white illustrations in this book which is laid out well with a good size and clear type font. . . . there are two enjoyable appendices. . . . The book ends with a selected bibliography, and an extremely thorough index. ... I found this book thoroughly enjoyable. I could talk forever about it – there are so many gems in the A-Z entries. There is a point in the introduction where the author-editors refer to themselves in writing the book as 'we have struggled through this book'. I can think of quite a number of works where it may well have been a struggle for the author, but where the reading is a struggle for the reader. This is, happily, not one of those works; it is thorough but perfectly readable and a work that strongly deserves a wide readership. I would have no hesitation in placing it among film books in a public library as well as recommending it for students of the cinema and film studies courses at university and college. It really is a great read. * s *Table of ContentsForeword Introduction Part I: Reading the Stone “Mosaic” (James M. Welsh and Donald M. Whaley) Introduction Part II: The Sixties Adventurer (Donald M. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewA fascinating look inside the mind of a filmmaker whose career ranged from bonafide classics--such as The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May--to unmitigated disasters. Frankenheimer discusses his work in unflinching terms, defending some critical failures (e.g., Prophecy) while acknowledging that others were made to pay the bills (e.g., The Extraordinary Seaman). His realistic approach to his craft can be summarized in this marvelous quote: "Every movie you make is a compromise." Armstrong has done a masterful job in selecting the articles, which were originally published between 1964 and 2010. The chronology of the articles allows the reader to learn how the acclaimed director viewed his films at different points in his life. Editor Stephen B. Armstrong, a professor at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, includes a comprehensive filmography, a bibliography, and an index. His book is a must for any library with a film reference collection and for anyone interested in what goes on behind the scenes in the making of a motion picture. * Classic Film and TV Café *Table of ContentsContents Introduction Permissions Chronology PART 1: FRANKENHEIMER ON FRANKENHEIMER John Frankenheimer: Little to Big Screen; John Cutts On Screen: John Frankenheimer; C. • Refocusing Chaplin A Screen Icon Through Critical

Scarecrow Press Refocusing Chaplin A Screen Icon Through Critical

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewOne effective method of teaching theory is to focus on a popular text and provide competing interpretations. Howe, Caron, and Click gather a cluster of such perspectives as they converge on the polysemic, iconic auteur filmmaker Charlie Chaplin. Offering a wide range of theoretical perspectives–Marxism, feminism, psychoanalysis–contributors exhume and dissect the body of Chaplin and his work, studying his screen persona and public celebrity. The approach serves both to highlight neglected aspects of the complex artist and to illumine theory. Charles Maland's introductory essay inaugurates this conversation by exploring the enduring appeal of both Chaplin and his cinematic persona Charlie. In his phenomenological study of Charlie's kinesic slapstick, Caron shows the clown as clumsy fool, 'eironic trickster,' and comic acrobat. Several essays offer particularly fascinating perspectives, especially Cynthia Miller's 'A Heart of Gold: Charlie and the Dance Hall Girls' and Click's rhetorical analysis of The Great Dictator. The critical collisions and cross-fertilizations among the contributors foster a lively, worthwhile intellectual exchange. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. * CHOICE *Refocusing Chaplin is recommended for libraries and research centers, especially at the university level, for its intelligent, thorough examination of perhaps the most important figure in cinema's history. * Examiner.com *This collection proves to be a valuable resource on one of the leading masters of cinema. * Comics Grinder *Table of ContentsPreface: Why Refocus Chaplin?
