  • The Andy Warhol Catalogue RaisonnÃ

Phaidon Press Ltd The Andy Warhol Catalogue RaisonnÃ

Book SynopsisThe first volume in a multi-volume series presents the most accurate and authoritative data on Andy Warhol (1928–87) ever assembled, including eagerly awaited new scholarshipTrade Review"An unmistakable silk-screened cover distinguishes the first volume of the Warhol catalogue raisonné, assembling paintings and sculptures completed between 1961 and 1963. Commenced in 1977 by Thomas Ammann, the ambitious multi-volume project, once completed, will be the definitive resource on the innumerable, controversial works of the Pop star. In 1993 Georg Frei and Neil Printz - the first a critic and curator, the latter an art historian specializing in 20th-century American art - began editing the catalogue in cooperation with Kynaston McShine, Robert Rosenblum, the Andy Warhol Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Authentication Board. In addition to essays and colour reproductions, Volume 1 contains an array of interesting sources used by the artist, including newspaper clippings and publicity shots of movie stars."—Tema Celeste"If the Warhol catalogue raisonné stands to offer us new information about Warhol's project, we cannot ignore the fact that at the same time it functions as a tool of authentication for the market...In the end, even if the authenticating function of the catalogue raisonné comes up against the thornier issues by the artist's unique approach to authorship, we are left wih productive insights into Warhol's broader project."—Art Journal"It's gratuitous, gigantic, gaudy-and expensive. Warhol would have loved it."—Details"One does not ordinarily read catalogue raisonnés for fun, but the volume on Andy Warhol that deals with his paintings and sculptures from 1961 to 1963 takes you as close as I think you could get to the way his mind worked in that extraordinarily creative period. The mystery of Warhol's mind is undissolved, but how that mind worked on a day-to-day basis is thrilling to observe."—Arthur C Danto, Emeritus Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University, The Art NewspaperTable of ContentsAcknowledgments; List of Frequently Cited Abbreviations; Introduction; Projected Images, 1961-early 1962 (cat. nos. 1-75); First Serial Compositions and Later Projected Images (cat. nos. 76-230); First Photo-Silkscreened Paintings, mid-late 1962 (cat. nos. 231-308); Optical Paintings, Portraits, and the First "Death and Disaster" Paintings, late 1962-early 1963 (cat. nos. 309-61); Silver Paintings and Documentary Images, early-mid 1963 (cat. nos. 362-459); Photobooth Portraits, mid-late 1963/early 1964 (cat. nos. 460-504); Images in Series and Final Serial Compositions, mid-late 1963/early 1964 (cat. nos. 505-46); Notes; Appendixes; Title Index; Index; Illustration Credits

  • William Morris Romantic to Revolutionary

The Merlin Press Ltd William Morris Romantic to Revolutionary

Book SynopsisWilliam Morris-the great 19th century craftsman, architect, designer, poet and writer-remains a monumental figure whose influence resonates powerfully today. As an intellectual (and author of the seminal utopian News From Nowhere), his concern with artistic and human values led him to cross what he called the 'river of fire' and become a committed socialist-committed not to some theoretical formula but to the day by day struggle of working women and men in Britain and to the evolution of his ideas about art, about work and about how life should be lived. Many of his ideas accorded none too well with the reforming tendencies dominant in the Labour movement, nor with those of 'orthodox' Marxism, which has looked elsewhere for inspiration. Both sides have been inclined to venerate Morris rather than to pay attention to what he said. Originally written less than a decade before his groundbreaking The Making of the English Working Class, E.P. Thompson brought to this biography his now traTrade Review"Two impressive figures, William Morris as subject and E. P. Book Synopsis''It is right that, after more than one hundred years, she should have her say'' John Carey, Sunday TimesTwelve days before her twenty-fourth birthday, on the foggy morning of Saturday 12 January 1901, Ida Nettleship married Augustus John in a private ceremony at St Pancras Registry Office. The union went against the wishes of Ida's parents, who aspired to an altogether more conventional match for their eldest daughter. But Ida was in love with Augustus, a man of exceptional magnetism also studying at the Slade, and who would become one of the most famous artists of his time. Ida's letters to friends, to family and to Augustus reveal a young woman of passion, intensity and wit. They tell of the scandal she brought on the Nettleship family and its consquences; of hurt and betrayal as the marriage evolved into a three-way affair when Augustus fell in love with another woman, Dorelia; of Ida's remarkable acceptance of Dorelia, their pregnancies and shared domesticity; of Trade ReviewIt is a terrible ending to a terrible story. You might say that it was all Ida’s fault. She was just a silly goose who mistook her grander for a phoenix. But that would not be true to the brave, witty, imaginative, sensitive, playful, talented woman who wrote these letters. It is right that, after more than one hundred years, she should have her say -- John Carey * Sunday Times *In the letters, erotic energy occasionally seems to be pushing in all directions at once … She may have forfeited her chance to paint, but her letters, salvaged by her granddaughter Rebecca, after a century during which the renegade Ida was not mentioned in the family, make belated amends. Between baby-minding chores, she proved to be a witty, wickedly outspoken writer, which ensures that she will now not be forgotten -- Peter Conrad * Guardian *The letters of Ida Nettleship, first wife of arch-bohemian Augustus John, are a case in point: gathered together here from diverse sources by her granddaughter Rebecca John and expertly introduced by John’s biographer Michael Holroyd, they constitute a rare epistolary treasure trove … they give us a startlingly vivid picture of what it was like to be bound by passion, loyalty and an ever-growing brood of offspring to a ‘genius’ ... the fine balance between tragedy and comedy in her situation finds expression in letters so fresh that it is hard to believe they were written more than a century ago -- Ariane Banks * Spectator *Their sympathetic edition of her fascinating and painful letters reveals a courageous woman, gifted with a buoyant intelligence -- Dinah Birch * The Times *Rarely have I come across a more engaging personality -- D.J. Taylor * Times Literary Supplement 'Books of the Year' *A compelling glimpse of a lost age of bohemia that raises provocative questions about what it means to live freely -- Lara Feigel * Guardian *The letters, published here for the first time, go a long way to recovering [Ida] and tell a painful story of an emotionally sophisticated, morally honest woman struggling with the trap in which she finds herself, trying by turns to escape and take control of the situation. To different correspondents she showed different facets of her predicament and the result is a portrait both fragmentary and poignant -- Rosemary Hill * London Review of Books *The reader remains haunted by Ida’s story, but also left aware that letters offer something that the grand narrative of a good biography often sweeps over or ignores: small contingencies, sudden mood changes, or what falls between the cracks. Indeed the very human muddle that is found here -- Frances Spalding * Oldie *These letters should resurrect [Ida] as a wit and object of fascination in her own right * Daily Telegraph *

  • Milton Glaser: POP

    Monacelli Press Milton Glaser: POP

Book Synopsis'Milton Glaser's designs changed the way we see the world.' - Gloria Steinem An overview of the work of illustrator and designer Milton Glaser during the 1960s and 70s From 1954, when he co-founded the legendary Push Pin Studios, to the late ’70s, Milton Glaser was one of the most celebrated graphic designers of his day, whose work graced countless book and album covers, posters, magazine covers, and advertisements, both famous and little-known. Glaser largely defined the international visual style for illustration, advertising, and typeface design and interest in his legacy continues unabated, with modern creatives acknowledging his influence; for example, in 2014 Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner enlisted Glaser to design the ad campaign and branding for the show’s final season. His renowned work garnered solo exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Creator of the iconic ‘I love NY’ logo (featuring a heart symbol in place of the word ‘love’) and cofounder of New York magazine, Glaser received numerous accolades and lifetime achievement awards. Across thousands of works across all print media, he invented a graphic language of bright, flat color, drawing and collage, imbued with wit. This collection of work from Glaser’s Pop period features hundreds of examples of his design that have not been seen since their original publication, demonstrating the graphic revolution that transformed design and popular culture.Trade Review‘Milton Glaser: Pop is a banquet of a book and an enormous pleasure to peruse.’ – Eye Magazine ‘[A] visual feast.’ – NPR Named a best book of 2023 by The New Yorker, NPR, and The Wall Street Journal ‘More than 1,100 color images included in this broad overview, [with] Glaser’s wit ever-present.’ – The Associated Press ‘...the genius of Milton Glaser . . . with an eye to timeliness, intelligent text and gorgeous illustration.’ – The Wall Street Journal ‘A knockout coffee table book celebrating the often gorgeous, always compelling artwork of the graphic arts giant.’ – The Village Voice ‘The wide-ranging materials provide an in-depth look into Glaser’s bold, instantly-recognizable art style.’ – 6sqft ‘A look at Milton Glaser’s impact during the 60s and 70s.’ – Creative Review ‘No art director’s work was more influential than that of Milton Glaser. . . But his real achievement lies in what this anthology reveals: a breathtaking empire of imagery that encompassed two decades and was felt in later years.’ – The New Yorker ‘[A] gorgeous book featuring his work during the 1960s and 1970s.’ – Design Milk 'Milton Glaser's designs changed the way we see the world.' – Gloria Steinem 'Hundreds of Glaser’s works, unseen since their original publication, feature in print once more to show the legendary designer’s portfolio.' – It’s Nice That 'Whoever coined the phrase ‘the best things come to those who wait’ was onto something - for this Milton Glaser book is well worth the wait. Filled with his iconic graphics, this book is an absolute must-have for graphic design enthusiasts.' – Grazia 'A vibrant overview.' – Designboom 'Milton Glaser: Pop collects hundreds of his illustrated pieces and usefully funnels them into broad categories. . . That structure clarifies that he had a few go-to devices that he relied upon often and consistently, but it also reveals just how much you can do with a basic idea once you get good at it. And Glaser was very, very good at it.' – Curbed 'No art director’s work was more influential or instantly identifiable than that of Milton Glaser. The extent of that style, which adorned books and records and movies – and is revealed in a new anthology from Monacelli, courtesy of Steven Heller, Mirko Ilić, and Beth Kleber, titled simply “Milton Glaser: Pop” – is astounding.' – The New Yorker 'A groovy new book featuring the iconic designer’s 1960s and ’70s work.' – SVA 'Glaser’s designs are synonymous with the ’60s and ’70s. [This] new book shows just how influential his style really was.' – Fast Company 'Across thematic chapters, the book features 1,100 images displaying Glaser’s influential graphic style of bright flat colour combined with visual wit across book and album covers, posters, magazines and advertisements many of them not seen since their original publication.' – Design Week

  • Frans Hals: The Male Portrait

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Frans Hals: The Male Portrait

Book SynopsisThis is the first book to concentrate on Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals’s highly innovative approach to male portraiture. Frans Hals is one of the greatest portrait painters of all time and, together with Rembrandt, is one of the most eminent seventeenth-century Dutch artists. Published to coincide with the Wallace Collection’s exhibition of the same name, Frans Hals: The Male Portrait explores the artist’s highly innovative approach to male portraiture, from the beginning of his career in the 1610s until the end of his life in 1666. Through pose, expression and virtuosic painterly technique, Hals revolutionised the male portrait into something entirely new and fresh, capturing and revealing his sitters’ characters like no one else before him. This book includes the first in-depth study of Hals’s great masterpiece, The Laughing Cavalier, from 1624. The extravagantly dressed young man, confidently posed with his left arm akimbo in the extreme foreground of the picture and seemingly penetrating into the viewer’s space, has been charming audiences for over a century. Richly illustrated, Frans Hals: The Male Portrait situates The Laughing Cavalier within the artist’s larger oeuvre and demonstrates how, at a relatively early point in his career, Hals was able to achieve this great masterpiece.Trade Reviewbeautifully presented and lavishly illustrated catalogue [...] as accessible and exciting for the general reader as for specialist conservators. -- James Innes-Mulrainethis lavishly illustrated paperback shows how Hals was able to achieve a masterpiece at a relatively early stage in his career. * Arts & Collections *This book you can treasure forever. * Historical Association *The catalogue, by Lelia Packer and Ashok Roy, is a brilliant book that’s concise, detailed, and informed. As William Morris said, "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

  • Grinling Gibbons and the Art of Carving

V & A Publishing Grinling Gibbons and the Art of Carving

Book Synopsis'David Esterly's handsome book on Gibbons has been republished by the V&A with sumptuous pictures' Laura Freeman, The Times, 14th August 2021 Reissued to mark 300 years since the death of Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721), this study views the work of the greatest of decorative woodcarvers from the perspective of a fellow carver, the late David Esterly. Grinling Gibbons is famous for giving wood "the loose and airy lightness of flowers." His flamboyant cascades of lifelike blossoms, fruits, foliage, birds and fish dominate English interiors of the late seventeenth century. They are among the glories of Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace, and St. Paul's Cathedral, as well as Badminton, Burghley, Petworth, and other great country houses. A contemporary of Christopher Wren and of the diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, Gibbons was part of the colourful world of Restoration England. His discovery by Evelyn in a tumble-down cottage near the River Thames was followed by a presentation to King Charles II, who rejected his early sculptural work. Gibbons responded by inventing his spectacular style of decorative carving. He was then rediscovered, reintroduced to the king, and launched into a triumphant career. After setting Gibbons in historical context, David Esterly's ground-breaking approach allows us to understand the process by which these exuberant carvings were created and how their forms reflect the organization of Gibbon's workshop. Esterly, a professional woodcarver who restored some of Gibbons' most important carvings, shares his unique knowledge of the layering process by which Gibbons built up such masterpieces as the Cosimo panel or the elaborate overmantels at Hampton Court Palace. Specially commissioned photographs show these carvings in a disassembled state, revealing the secrets of their construction. Esterly also discusses Gibbons' formidable carving techniques, and his tools, workshop practice, materials, and finishing are described in detail. This generously illustrated volume will have a special appeal for carvers as well as for those interested in seventeenth-century interiors and the decorative arts.Trade Review'David Esterly's handsome book on Gibbons has been republished by the V&A with sumptuous pictures' Laura Freeman, The Times, 14th August 2021Table of ContentsPreface -- Foreword -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- Part I Origins -- 1. Book SynopsisAn examination of Pierre Huyghe''s post-apocalyptic Untitled (Human Mask), which asks whether our human future may be one of remnants and mimicry.Pierre Huyghe''s 2014 film Untitled (Human Mask) combines images of a post-apocalyptic world (actual footage of deserted streets close to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of March 2011) with a haunting scene of a monkey working in an empty restaurant wearing a human mask and a wig. She''s a girl! The flat, emotionless almost automaton state of the mask and the artificial glossy hair topped even with a child''s bow, suggests that she, the monkey, might be a character from Japanese Noh theatre. But there''s no music. Instead Huyghe''s film evinces the terrifying possibility that our own, human, future might just be one of remnants and mimicry; that the deserted streets of Fukushima and the monkey''s recognizable, alienating chimeric performance is all that might survive us. Untitled (Human Mask) presents a pluperfect world with extinction the endgame for a civilization that cared little for the present, dreaming only of a future that inevitably and necessarily could not include it.

Book SynopsisHans Holbein's famous portrayal of Sir Thomas More is one of the artist's greatest and most popular portraits. In the opening piece of this appealing new volume, "A Letter to Thomas More, Knight", award-winning author Hilary Mantel vividly imagines the background to the creation of this extraordinary portrait, giving it both historical perspective and immediacy. An insightful, concise, scholarly essay by Xavier Salomon grounds it in the art-historical world. Hans Holbein (1497/98-1543) painted Sir Thomas More in 1527, having been a guest in More's house when he first arrived in England. He brilliantly renders his sitter's rich fabrics and unshaven face with sympathy and perception. Frick Diptychs, a new series of small books to be co-published by GILES with The Frick Collection, New York, pairs masterworks from the Frick with critical and literary essays. The novelist Hilary Mantel will be followed by the filmmaker James Ivory on Vermeer's "Mistress and Maid" and the artist and author Edmund de Waal on a pair of porcelain and bronze candlesticks by the 18th-century French metalworker Pierre Gouthiere.Trade ReviewTasty Twosomes. The exhibition showcases the complete series of The Black Drawings, created between 2022 and 2024, now on display for the first time. This book is dedicated entirely to Lang's prolific output in drawing, featuring 96 works crafted using acrylic, crayon and pencil. As George Vasey notes, the drawings mark a shift in the artist's approach.' The dark, otherworldly characters from his paintings skeletons and disembodied skulls remain, but now inhabit blank white spaces, intricately inscribed with playful expressions and phrases that echo Taoist philosophy, reflecting the spiritual foundations of Lang's practice. More than just companions to his immense paintings, the drawings stand as a significant body of work, continuing to demonstrate the breadth of Lang's influences ranging from fine art icons such as Francis Bacon, James Ensor, Francisco Goya, and Alfred Munnings, to the kitsch imagery of his childhood. Lang effortlessly metabolises these disparate inspirations, creating a distinctive style that transcends mediums and expresses a deeply personal artistic voice that feels cohesive rather than fragmented or frenetic. Published in association with Newport Street Gallery, The Black Drawings catalogue presents more than 100 stunning reproductions, offering yet another intimate glimpse into the richness of Lang's artistic mind and the world he has created for himself.

  • Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin

D Giles Ltd Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin

Book SynopsisAccording to Nico Muhly, the Coronation of the Virgin is "a panel of pure theatre and music". Painted in 1358 by the Venetian artist Paolo Veneziano (ca. 1295-1362), the apocryphal story of the Virgin's death is depicted in one of the artist's most thrilling and important works. Paolo Veneziano presents the Virgin and Christ in sumptuous garments and surrounded by a choir of angels playing portable organs, lutes, trumpets, tambourines, and other instruments. The angels symbolize the harmony of the universe; their instruments are the authentic components of a medieval orchestra, accurately depicted and correctly held and played. The decorative sparkle of the surface - with its brilliant, expensive colours, patterned textiles, and lavish gold leaf - reflects the Venetians' love of luxury, a taste that enriches much of 14th- and 15th-century architecture in Venice.Table of ContentsDirector's Foreword by Ian Wardropper; Acknowledgments; Contribution by Nico Muhly; Essay by Xavier F.
