JRP Ringier Subodh Gupta: Common Man
Book SynopsisSubodh Gupta (born 1964) agglomerates everyday Indian household objects such as cooking utensils into monumental entities such as mushroom clouds or skulls, often sabotaging the fiction of intrinsic value through witty inversion and conjunction. Among the fruits of his methods are sculptural works such as bronze mangos, Hindu-swastika ceiling fans and worn-out sandals placed alongside three-dimensional Mona Lisas. Gupta''s mostly found materials, which range in texture from aluminum, bronze and stainless steel to fiberglass and neon, identify themselves as Indian in origin, but are recomposed into sculptural meanings accessible to all nationalities (one implication of the title''s common man). This monograph is published on the occasion of Gupta''s first solo exhibition in London; alongside full-color reproductions, it includes an interview between Gupta and Hans Ulrich Obrist and an essay on the artist''s work by Martin Herbert.

Monacelli Press Rogan Gregory: Event Horizon
Book SynopsisThe first monograph of Rogan Gregory, the artist/designer on the forefront of contemporary organic form-making Rogan Gregory’s work pushes boundaries across media and scale – from miniature bronze animal forms to towering sculptures and furniture in innovative aggregated materials. Gregory’s iterative process and life-long interests in abstract forms, geology, and evolutionary biology allow him to develop an organic aesthetic unlike that of any designer working today. This debut monograph explores Gregory’s work through the elemental inspirations that condition his work. Contributions by landscape architect Edwina von Gal, interior designer Pamela Shamshiri, and conservation biologist Tremaine Gregory reflect the synthesis of disciplines Gregory brings to his practice. Co-published with R & Company, this book is an object in its own right, incorporating Gregory’s design and materials sensibilities.Trade Review‘Beautifully photographed . . . Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Eric Ravilious: Imagined Realities
Book SynopsisA collection of illustrations showcasing many previously unpublished paintings of the artist Eric Ravilious. Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) is now firmly one of the most popular artists of his period. He was a painter of watercolours and murals, a book illustrator in wood engraving and lithography, and a designer of transfer-ware pottery. He applied a dry and precise style of working to imaginative and romantic subject matter from the world around him and from his imaginative transformations of the art and imagery of the past. From 1940, he was an Official War Artist, painting memorable pictures of ships, aircraft and coastal defences before his tragic death in a flying accident off Iceland. This book includes illustrations of many previously unpublished paintings, including a number from private collections, as well as surveying his other artistic activities. The text also draws on many letters and other documents, again previously unpublished, and is the most comprehensive account of Ravilious' career ever published. It positions the artist in relation to the English art of his time, and more recent critical and cultural issues. The book accompanied a centenary exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, London.Table of ContentsForeword Introduction Murals Illustration Design Watercolours War Paintings Conclusion: Imagined and Imaginal Realities Notes Plates Bibliography Catalogue Chronology Acknowledgements Lenders

Since his release, Flowers has produced a stunning spectrum of paintings expressing his ardent advocacy for human rights, and his resonant, up-lifting mantra “Love is the vaccine”. This beautifully illustrated volume provides the first full treatment of Flower’s artistic vision, with insightful interpretation from leading scholars of this star on the rise.

National Gallery: Bosschaert the Elder - Still life of Flowers in a Wan-Li Vase. Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder was a Dutch Golden Age painter. The flowers in this arrangement, which include lilies, tulips, roses, and carnations, are painted with almost scientific precision. Bosschaert’s choice of a smooth copper support enhances the extraordinary detail of his brushwork. The bouquet itself, however, is a fiction: these flowers do not bloom at the same time, and would have been far too precious to cut for temporary display.

Phaidon Press Ltd Lynda Benglis
Book SynopsisThe definitive monograph on American sculptor and visual artist Lynda Benglis, one of the most important living artists today Since her arrival in New York from her native Louisiana in the late 1960s, Lynda Benglis gained recognition for creating a groundbreaking body of work that challenged sculpture and painting conventions in a largely male-dominated art world. A tireless explorer of new shape and materials, Benglis's gestural and formal approach to art-making has, over the years, elevated her to iconic status, her work being evidence of how process can wield pliant matter and let it 'take its own form' Trade Review‘Lynda Benglis redefined sculpture in the 1960s and is now at her most prolific.’ – New York Times‘She’s a globe-trotting artist who can shock and delight at once.’ – Financial Times‘She rocked the art world.’ – Washington Post‘Her work has been about seizing art as a tool of empowerment and autonomy.’ – Artforum‘Benglis has always gone her own way – an attitude that has sometimes got her into trouble. Suburban homes, tree houses, and empty rooms and vacant chairs, all float in haunting isolation. Muted hues are penetrated with thread and needle where the artist hand-sews forms into textural materiality. Hauser & Wirth William Kentridge SelfPortrait as a Coffee Pot
Book SynopsisWilliam Kentridge reimagines his film series Self-Portrait as a Coffee-Pot through text and image in this striking artist's book. A new film series by internationally acclaimed South-African artist William Kentridge, Self-Portrait as a Coffee-Pot premiered at the Arsenale Insitute for Politics of Representation during the 2024 Venice Biennale. An experiment in embodiment and phenomenological experience in the digital age that was initially created for online viewing, Kentridge has now reimagined the series as a publication. He reworks its nine episodes through a selection of film stills and script extracts, this new form reinvigorating the series' investigations into the relationship between mark-making and self-fashioning, painting and musical scores, dance and drawing, and its reflection on what might happen in the brain and in the studio of an artist today.

Yale University Press Mrs Delany
Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive biography of Mary Granville Delany—the artist and court insider whose wide-ranging legacy still reverberates todayTrade Review“Biographer Clarissa Campbell Orr immerses you in the minutiae of Mary’s life.”—Constance Craig-Smith, Daily Mail“The whole work resonates with the sound of not only Delany’s voice in quotations from her letters and occasional poems but also those of many of her contemporaries, which generates a highly pleasurable and instructive image of eighteenth-century sociability.”—Alain Kerherve, Burlington Magazine“This sensitively-written book immerses the reader in the world of a cultivated and artistic eighteenth-century gentlewoman. Through a fully-researched and fascinating exploration of the familial correspondence of Mary Delany, Orr throws new and original light on the attitudes of the eighteenth-century elite to marriage, family life and the education and status of women.”—Jane Rendall, author of The Origins of Modern Feminism“Mrs Delany’s love of gardens and natural history, combined with the dexterity of a craftswoman, led her, at over seventy, to an astonishing project: the wonderful cut-paper flower pictures for which she is now remembered. Orr gives us the Christian gentlewoman rather than the artist, in a panorama of gentry life with its many duties and constraints as well as privileges. One feels that Mrs Delany would give her blessing to the portrait.”—Norma Clarke, author of Queen of the Wits“How was it that Mary Delany so skillfully combined a high-profile social circle, copious letter-writing and attendance at the royal court with gardening, botanical enquiry and prolific and innovative artistic endeavour? This fascinating life is both timely and revelatory.”—James Raven, What Is the History of the Book?“Through a deep study of kinship, friendship and a large cast of characters, Orr skilfully crafts the story behind Mary Delany’s creation of nearly one thousand botanical collages as an album amicorum. With great clarity and verve, the author proves a most faithful companion to Delany and her life’s ‘work.’”—Mark Laird, author of A Natural History of English Gardening

University of California Press Reading Basquiat
Book SynopsisBefore his death at the age of twenty-seven, Jean-Michel Basquiat completed nearly 2,000 works. These unique compositionscollages of text and gestural painting across a variety of mediaquickly made Basquiat one of the most important and widely known artists of the 1980s. Reading Basquiat provides a new approach to understanding the range and impact of this artist's practice, as well as its complex relationship to several key artistic and ideological debates of the late twentieth century, including the instability of identity, the role of appropriation, and the boundaries of expressionism. Jordana Moore Saggese argues that Basquiat, once known as the black Picasso, probes not only the boundaries of blackness but also the boundaries of American art. Weaving together the artist's interests in painting, writing, and music, this groundbreaking book expands the parameters of aesthetic discourse to consider the parallels Basquiat found among these disciplines in his exploration of the productTrade Review"Amply illustrated . . . a lucid account that encourages the reader to look with refreshed eyes at the richness of the artist's work." * Times Higher Education *"Offers a compelling analysis that reveals and elucidates the complex language systems and cultural discourses at play in Basquiat’s work." * Art Practical *"In four chapters, the author gives the artist’s work the scholarly and historical attention it rightly deserves while contributing to the fields of American art, African American art, contemporary art, and diaspora art." * Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction: Reading Jean-Michel Basquiat 1. “The Black Picasso”: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Questions of Race 2.
