Book SynopsisDesigned to foster critical engagement and interest the specialist and non-specialist alike, each book in the Frick Diptych series illuminates a single work in the Frick's rich collection with an essay by a Frick curator paired with a contribution from a contemporary artist or writer. The White Horse (1819) by John Constable (1776–1837) is the first of the series of the "six-footers," monumental landscapes of the English countryside that would become the artist's most famous works. Constable described the scene as "a placid representation of a serene, grey morning, summer." Years later, he said, "there are generally in the life of an artist perhaps one, two or three pictures, on which hang more than usual interest - this is mine". An essay by Aimee Ng, Frick Curator, paired with a contribution by artist William Kentridge bring to life one of Constable's most serene depictions of rural life, the artist's personal favorite. AUTHORS: William Kentridge (born 28 April 1955) is a South African artist whose work spans a diverse range of artistic media such as drawing, performance, film, printmaking, sculpture and painting. Kentridge has also directed a number of acclaimed operas and theatrical productions. Royal Academy of Arts A Book of Birds: by Humphrey Ocean

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe artist Humphrey Ocean RA has painted portraits of Sir Paul McCartney and Philip Larkin, among many others. But alongside these prestigious commissions, he has always returned to drawing the simpler things in life: our 'alluringly unnatural world', as he puts it. The result is this idiosyncratic and charming collection of birds, all rendered in Ocean's unique style. With a species to discover on every page, this book is the perfect gift for any keen ornithologist, aspiring twitcher or dedicated listener to Tweet of the Day. As well as birdwatching around his home and studio in South London, Ocean regularly visits his sister, who is a nun in Nairobi and has loved birds all her life. There, he paints Kenyan birds such as the Eurasian bee-eater, the Bulbul and the Flycatcher that are 'local, a bit like our garden birds so nothing overly exotic, but of course to me they are'. They join the familiar gulls, thrushes and tits of the gardens, parks and hedgerows of the UK in this beautifully produced collection.

Book SynopsisMausoleum of Imperfection is a collection of picturesque and satirical portraits made by Slavko Krunić that refute the idea of separation between the observer and the work of art. Th us, it creates a certain intimacy; we feel we are the portraits’ companions and they are our fellow travellers in an imaginary life. Th e comical fantasy of these melancholy characters, who are watching us from the images, allows us to listen to their life stories whilst observing them in their immobility. Bill Gould wrote a short biography of an imaginary witness inspired by Krunic’s work. From this symbiosis arose an unusual combination of different artistic expressions, which was then shaped into Mausoleum of Imperfection.

Book SynopsisCedric Morris (1889–1982) and Arthur Lett-Haines (known as Lett) (1894–1978) were an extraordinary couple who were at the centre of the Modern British art scene and were hugely influential across the spheres of gardening and cookery as well as art. After studying in Paris in the 1920s, they moved to London, where they gave fabulous parties attended by the cream of creative London. Morris became a sought-after painter of flowers, birds and landscapes, while Lett was hailed as Britain’s first Surrealist. Together they founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End in Suffolk, attended by Lucian Freud and Maggi Hambling, where the atmosphere was described as “robust and coarse, exquisite and sensitive all at once, also faintly dangerous”. Lett ran the school and was a superb cook who swapped recipes with Elizabeth David. Cedric Morris became an award-winning plantsman and poppy and iris breeder. He was an acknowledged influence on many gardeners, including Beth Chatto. This biography, revised and updated in this paperback edition, is a fascinating portrait of a unique couple who were hugely influential across the spheres of gardening and cookery as well as art.Trade Review"A fascinating and very British story mixing minor aristocracy and delicious homosexual high jinks, grand country houses and Avant Garde intrigue. Book SynopsisKey works from the 50-year career of the great Dansaekhwa abstractionist One of the early members of the Dansaekhwa art movement, Suh Seung-Won (born 1941) set the foundations for modernism in Korea. For over 50 years, Seung-Won's delicate monochrome paintings have explored the concept of "simultaneity," using geometric patterns to delineate his aesthetic understanding of time and space. This lavishly illustrated monograph collects selected works from throughout the artist's career, presented here alongside historical photographs from the artist's life and earliest exhibitions. Major new texts from critic Barry Schwabsky and art historian Sohl Lee track the development of Suh's revolutionary aesthetic since the 1960s and its parallels in the development of the artworld and Korean culture during that time. Suh Seung-Won is an essential look at one of the most vital artists of Korea's modernist movement and the subtly powerful monochrome abstractions that have defined his legacy.

Book SynopsisThree decades of luminous cityscapes from downtown New York’s legendary painter-performer Multidisciplinary performer, designer and artist Tabboo! (born 1959) rose to prominence during the 1980s through New York City’s underground drag scene. When Tabboo! first moved to the city at age 23, he fell in love with the electrifying, scrappy downtown environment and began to paint cityscapes for the backdrops in his drag performances. Forty years later, the city has altered drastically but the artist’s ardor remains (he even lives in the same apartment in Alphabet City). The sweeping cityscapes gathered in this volume are reminiscent of Tabboo!’s early backdrops. Dramatic color fields render the city in moments of transition, from day into night and back again. Gleaming windows are sprinkled with glitter, scattering the sun’s brilliance as it sets. An indelible energy soaks these cityscapes, many of which depict the view from Tabboo!’s apartment window.

Book SynopsisDrawing occupies a prominent place in the work of Paul Klee (1879-1940). Klee attached great importance to drawing and in particular to the line as the principle from which the realisation and visual generation of an idea emanates. This aspect is also a core interest of collectors Sylvie and Jorge Helft, who over almost five decades have assembled some 70 of Klee's pencil, pen and pastel drawings, as well as watercolours, etchings, and lithographs, which the artist has created between 1914 and 1940. The Helff’s Klee collection forms an extraordinarily coherent whole. This book, published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI) in Lugano from 4 September 2022 to 8 January 2023, features for the first time this unique selection from Klee’s oeuvre. A conversation with Sylvie and Jorge Helft by MASIS’s director Tobia Bezzola and essays by philosopher Francisco Jarauta, art and literary critic Juan Manuel Bonet, and art dealer and curator Achim Moeller supplement the full colour plates.

Book SynopsisIn a practice spanning nearly two decades, Jose Dávila has created an expressive body of work that explores the visual tropes and iconic symbols of art, architecture, and urban design. Initially trained as an architect and self-educated as a visual artist, Dávila creates sculptures, installations and photographic works that simultaneously emulate, critique, and pay homage to 20th-century avant-garde art and architecture, referencing artists and architects from Luis Barragán to Josef Albers and Donald Judd. Humor and melancholy co-mingle in works that often explore the tension between industrial and organic materials and the forces of compression and balance. This monograph assesses the full scope of Dávila’s practice in all media for the first time, and includes texts attesting to the historical and social dimensions of Dávila’s art. Essays address the artist’s early pieces, his exercises on balance, sculpture, graphics and paintings, and his works in public space.

Book SynopsisThe work of the Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Rosa Barba is distinguished by her conceptual exploration of film. In this publication she devises a progressive vision for the cinema of the future. Barba translates questions of composition and plasticity into precisely staged arrangements that open up new ways of looking at both the material and the conceptual conditions of the medium of film. Starting with Barba’s artistic research, this volume deals with the concept of an anarchical organization of filmic spaces—a work principle that could shape a new way of thinking by destabilizing traditional cinematic structures. Through this, the author undertakes a journey to an imaginary political trope for today’s cinema.

For me the greatest challenge is to make an interesting image of something very ordinary, almost invisible, reflects Finnish photographer Markus Jokela. His images are the result of coincidences and unplanned encounters with people and places. Jokela almost never stages his photographs. Sometimes he asks people to stop, to freeze, but usually he just snaps one or two frames and continues walking. Moments and Landscapes of Minor Importance were shot in Helsinki between 2019 and 2023. Most of them were captured within a few kilometers from where he lives. Jokela has won three World Press Photo awards, but despite his proximity to global moments, his personal projects often document everyday human life.

This volume presents for the first time a comprehensive overview of her oeuvre and shows how th e artist arrives at her powerful compositions. Nature in ever - changing light is Helene B. Grossmann’s source of inspiration. Through abstraction and the application of countless layers of paint she arrives at the distinct glow inherent to her works. In bo th small and large formats she has captured the fluid phenomenon of light on canvas in a wide variety of color diffractions. An unobstructed space opens up for the viewer, giving rise to intimations of landscapes, tableaus and spatiality. The basis for eac h and every painting is the artist’s sketchbook. In it she lays out a first general outline of the composition by means of color planes and lines. In doing so, she often artistically reflects on masterpieces of painting and takes up the particular lighting used in them.

Book SynopsisJean-Michel Basquiat’s symbolic, complex, and often emotionally charged work made a huge impact on the 1980s downtown New York City art scene. And though his all-too-brief career ended when he died at age 27, Basquiat left behind an enormous legacy—not only in the number of works he produced, but also in the messages he encoded around political, social, racial, and cultural issues. This exciting book shows how Basquiat used an intricate network of signs and symbols to challenge the very system that made him a darling of the art world. It traces his inspiration from cartoons, children’s drawings, and advertising as well as his own Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage; discusses the influence of African-American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; and shows how Basquiat incorporated into his work classical themes and contemporary icons—from athletes to musicians. What becomes clear is how, even as a young man, Basquiat had a profound understanding of the artist’s role in art history, and of his position as a young Black artist in a world of racism, suppression and social injustice. This book helps readers decode Basquiat’s unique lingua franca, an intoxicating body of work brimming with social commentary that was in turns incisive, angry, comic, hip, and heartbreaking, and that remains powerful and meaningful today.

He began painting in his youth in Italy before moving to Paris in 1906, during the height of the avant-garde movement. Influenced by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Cézanne, Modigliani developed his own unique, uncharacterizable style. His nudes upended traditions at the time due to their immodesty, candid sexuality, and ability to convey the subject’s personality. Because of the works’ scandalous nature, Modigliani had very little success with his paintings while he was alive. This volume features stunning full-page illustrations of Modigliani’s works, along with information about his life, including his bohemian, over-the-top lifestyle and his untimely, tragic death. Book SynopsisOne of the key figures in the New York art world of the 1980s, Keith Haring (1958–1990) created a signature style that blended street art, graffiti, a Pop sensibility, and cartoon elements to unique, memorable effect. With thick black outlines, bright colors, and kinetic figures, his public (and occasionally illegal) interventions, sculptures, and works on canvas and paper have become instantly recognizable icons of 20th-century visual culture. From his first chalk drawings in the New York City subway stations, to his renowned “Radiant Baby” symbol, and his commissions for Swatch Watch and Absolut Vodka, Haring’s work was both emblematic of the manic work ethic of 1980s New York, yet distinctive for its social awareness. Belying their bright, playful aesthetics, his pieces often tackled intensely controversial socio-political issues, including racism, capitalism, religious fundamentalism, and the increasing impact of AIDS on New York’s gay community, the latter foreshadowing his own death from the disease in 1990. In this vivid introduction to Haring’s work, we explore the dynamic life and innovative spirit of this singular artist, who spent little more than a decade in the spotlight, but through the accessibility of his visual vocabulary and the strength of his political commitment became one of the most significant artists to emerge from New York’s vibrant, downtown community.

Book SynopsisPaul Gauguin (1848–1903) was not cut out for finance. Nor did he last particularly long in the French Navy, or as a tarpaulin salesman in Copenhagen who did not speak Danish. He began painting in his spare time in 1873 and in 1876 took part in the Paris Salon. Three years later, he was exhibiting alongside Pissarro, Degas, and Monet. A querulous, hard-drinking individual, Gauguin often called himself a savage. His close but fraught friendship with the similarly temperamental Vincent van Gogh climaxed in a violent incident in 1888, when van Gogh purportedly confronted Gauguin with a razor blade, and later cut off his own ear. Shortly afterwards, following the completion of a midcareer masterpiece Vision After the Sermon (1888), Gauguin took himself to Tahiti, with the intention of escaping “everything that is artificial and conventional…” On Tahiti, Gauguin’s unfettered joy in the island’s nature, native people, and figurative images soared, spurring a prolific output of paintings and prints. In works such as Woman with a Flower (Vahine no te Tiare, 1891) and Sacred Spring: Sweet Dreams (Nave Nave Moe, 1894), he developed a distinct, Primitivist style that positively oozed with sunshine and color. In the tradition of exotic sensuality, his thick, buttery lashings of paint lingered in particular over the curves of Tahitian women. Gauguin died alone, on Tahiti’s neighboring Marquesas Islands, with many of his personal papers and belongings dispersed in a local auction. It was not until a smart art dealer began curating and showing Gauguin’s work in Paris that the artist’s profound influence began making itself felt, especially to the new breed of French avant-garde artists, such as Picasso and Matisse. This book offers the essential introduction the artist’s truly colorful life, from the Impressionist salons of 1870s Paris to his final days in the Pacific, productive and passionate to the end.

Book SynopsisAndy Warhol (1928–1987) is hailed as the most important proponent of the Pop art movement. A critical and creative observer of American society, he explored key themes of consumerism, materialism, media, and celebrity. Drawing on contemporary advertisements, comic strips, consumer products, and Hollywood’s most famous faces, Warhol proposed a radical reevaluation of what constituted artistic subject matter. Through Warhol, a Campbell’s soup can and Coca Cola bottle became as worthy of artistic status as any traditional still life. At the same time, Warhol reconfigured the role of the artist. Famously stating “I want to be a machine,” he systematically reduced the presence of his own authorship, working with mass-production methods and images, as well as dozens of assistants in a studio he dubbed the Factory. This book introduces Warhol’s multifaceted, prolific oeuvre, which revolutionized distinctions between “high” and “low” art and integrated ideas of living, producing, and consuming that remain central questions of modern experience.

Art Gid Erik Bulatov: Come to Garage!

Book SynopsisSince the beginning of his career in the 1960s, Russian artist Erik Bulatov has investigated the potential of painting as social commentary. A founder of the school of Moscow Conceptualism-alongside Ilya Kabakov, Collective Actions, and Komar & Melamid among others-Bulatov developed what has been described as conceptual painting, using text and image to explore spatial preoccupations that mirror his understanding of social relations. This book follows the making of the artist's largest work to date: a thirty-two-feet high monumental diptych made in his trademark graphic style, reminiscent of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky's advertising posters from the 1920s. Introducing an innovative assessment of Bulatov's oeuvre, this richly illustrated publication includes an essay by Garage curator Snejana Krasteva exploring his use of monumental scale, an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and several of Bulatov's texts spanning the period 1978-2006, which are translated into English for the first time.Table of Contents1) FOREWORD, Kate Fowle. 2) INTERVIEW: CAPITAL LETTERS, Erik Bulatov and Hans Ulrich Obrist. 3) ERIK BULATOV AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO CONTEMPORARY PAINTING, Snejana Krasteva. 4) SELECTED POEMS, Vsevolod Nekrasov. 5) AUTOBIOGRAPHY, Erik Bulatov. 6) FROM THE ARTICLE "SURFACE-SPACE-LIGHT", Erik Bulatov. 7) THE PAINTING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE PAINTING! Book Synopsis"I have an old camera with which I have taken countless photographs of myself. It often produces astonishing effects", Edvard Munch states in a 1930 interview. "Someday when I am old and have nothing better to do than work on an autobiography, all my photographic self-portraits will see the light of day again." The autobiography was never realised, but the self-portraits have found their way to the pages of The Experimental Self. The Photography of Edvard Munch, which demonstrates the fundamentally experimental nature of the artist’s photographic practice. As a photographer, Munch embraced the freedom provided by the amateur position, and the unpredictable aspects of analogue photographic technology. By playfully approaching his own image in picture after picture, Munch extends his explorations of self-hood in other media through photography. The resulting photographs provide unique access to Munch’s radical artistic vision, which this book studies through eminent essays by Patricia G. Berman, Tom Gunning and MaryClaire Pappas.
