Hirmer Verlag Wiebke Siem (Bilingual edition): The Maximal

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisWiebke Siem (1954 Kiel, DE – Berlin, DE) became known in the 1990s for extensive installations in which she alienated everyday objects, such as pieces of clothing, shoes, bags, or toys, or transformed them into oversized objects. Wiebke Siems uses pieces of furniture, objects, and materials with domestic connotations and whimsical, often puppet-like figures to create psychologically charged installations that are as oppressive as they are humorous and that raise questions about societal role models. Siem’s art repeatedly employs a formal language and a mode of presentation that refer to ethnological objects and collections. This enables her to comment on Modernism’s problematic appropriation strategies toward non-European art. In addition to borrowing motifs from art and cultural history, Siem critically engages the mechanisms of the male-dominated art business – a central theme in her oeuvre.

  • Eduardo Terrazas (Spanish Edition): Cosmos

Hirmer Verlag Eduardo Terrazas (Spanish Edition): Cosmos

Book Synopsis"Cosmos" offers new approaches on the stunning art works of Eduardo Terrazas (* 1936). Four well known authors present a multidisciplinary vision on the artists ongoing series "Possibilities of a Structure". Which suggests at once a curiosity in the fabric of our universe and a profoundly human hope for an underlying rationality behind the chaos of the world. Eduardo Terrazas has explored a lifetime’s worth of questions about the nature of the universe through the microcosm of his images. He derives his visual reflections with a basic geometric structure and a technique that is inspired by the Huichol tablas from Mexican indigenous tribes. His highly colourful and playful series "Possibilities of a Structure" – of which Cosmos is a subseries – has been an ongoing project since 1974 and comprises over 650 works until today: an artistic exploration of the boundaries of the infinite.

The volume is lavishly illustrated and documents its creation, showing all the artists’ pillars in detailed individual photos. It was back in 1990 on a journey through South India that, inspired by the pillared porticoes of the Hindu temples, the painter Bernd Zimmer had the idea of a project which has now been realised as STOA169, a permanent art installation in Polling, Bavaria. Artists from all continents were invited to design pillars which together support a roof. • Chagall (Norwegian Edition)

    Hirmer Verlag Chagall (Norwegian Edition)

Book SynopsisMarc Chagall (1887–1985) is regarded as the poet amongst modernist artists. His works from the 1930s and 1940s are less well known. In them, his bright colour palette became darker. Even in the early 1930s, Chagall addressed the increasingly aggressive anti-Semitism and touched in his artistic works on central themes such as identity, homeland and exile. In over 100 haunting paintings, works on paper and costumes, the volume traces the artist’s search for a pictorial language in the face of displacement and persecution. It presents important works in which Chagall increasingly focuses on his Jewish environment: numerous self-portraits, his devotion to allegorical and Biblical subjects, important designs from his time in exile in the United States and main works like The Falling Angel. The book offers a highly topical perspective on the oeuvre of one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

  • Johann Gottfried Schadow: Embracing Forms

Hirmer Verlag Johann Gottfried Schadow: Embracing Forms

Book SynopsisJohann Gottfried Schadow’s Princess group has gone down in the annals of art history. As the first statue of two female historical personalities it testifies to the innovation, enormous artistry and productivity of sculpture workshops in the 19th century – a symbol of the important sculpture of German Classicism. In around 1800 Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764–1850) was the most famous artist in Prussia. More than most others he knew how to combine the outstanding position as court sculptor with entrepreneurial success and a steady bourgeois existence, and thereby to cultivate an international network. The artist himself modelled, drew, wrote art-theoretical treatises and was the head of the Berlin Academy, one of the most important art schools of the time. The monograph opens new perspectives onto the brilliant creativity of the great sculptor and his workshop.

  • Sonya Clark: We Are Each Other

Hirmer Verlag Sonya Clark: We Are Each Other

Book SynopsisThis is the first volume to document and contextualize Sonya Clark’s large-scale, collaborative artworks. These projects demonstrate Clark’s career-long commitment to addressing the urgent issue of racial inequality in American society and her philosophy of creatively engaging the viewer in reflection on the nation’s history of slavery and our roles in dismantling systemic racism today. As an extension of her abiding commitment to issues of history, race, and reconciliation in her work, Clark is also distinctive as an artist for her use of textiles and other everyday materials, which she aligns with the intertwined histories of art and craft. For marginalized people (African Americans and women, in particular) handwork has been essential to survival and consequently has functioned, and continues to function, as an important means of creating a group identity. Hence, for Clark, craft is essential to the question of equality.

  • C.C. Wang: Lines of Abstraction

Hirmer Verlag C.C. Wang: Lines of Abstraction

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisC.C. Wang (1907–2003) is best known as a preeminent twentieth-century connoisseur and collector of pre-modern Chinese art, a reputation that often overshadows his own art. Lines of Abstraction brings attention to Wang’s artistic experimentations. Spanning seven decades, the catalog focuses on the artist’s distinctive synthesis of Chinese literati ink art and American postwar abstraction. Born to a family of scholar-officials at the twilight of the Qing dynasty, Wang mastered the traditional ink and brush techniques in Republican China and immigrated to New York City. There he sought to perfect the literati painting, a genre associated with Chinese artist-intellectuals that blends calligraphy, painting, and poetry. Drawing inspiration from this historic art form, as well as New York’s artistic climate in the wake of World War II, he advanced breakthrough transformations in ink painting. Held twenty years after the artist’s death, a 2023 exhibit of Wang’s art was hosted by two venues, one at Hunter College and the second at the University of Minnesota. This exhibition catalog includes one hundred color images and features contributions by Daniel Greenberg and Joseph Scheier-Dolberg.

From the invention of Sots Art, a conceptual movement that emerged in the early 1970s in the Soviet Union, to their sardonic Most Wanted Paintings project, based on market research, to the end of their joint career in the US, Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid challenged viewers with provocative, witty and ironic art. Lavishly illustrated the book includes the latest scholarship on the duo and historically important texts, offering a renewed interpretation of the artists’ social and political concerns.

  • Arnulf Rainer: Rosarot Himmelblau

Hirmer Verlag Arnulf Rainer: Rosarot Himmelblau

Book SynopsisMaster of overpainting – experience the fascinating oeuvre of Arnulf Rainer. The art of Arnulf Rainer (*1929) is baffling. The “black overpainting”, with which he covers previous work, is world famous. We overlook the fact that overpaintings in red, blue, green and white also exist and thus that colour always belonged to his means of expression, as this volume vividly demonstrates. Characteristic of Rainer’s work is not only the use of paint, but also the way that he applies it, as the energetic use of physical strength in his hand and finger paintings from the 1970s and 1980s shows. At the end of this period he changed over to a more transparent painting method and used broad brushes to apply the paint like a veil. The visually stunning publication presents works from widely differing series, including Blattmalerei, Engel, Geologica, Goya, Landschaften, Mikrokosmos and Makrokosmos.

Body centres the political and creative resistance of Xicanx artists from 1968 to the present. The publication presents new histories of Xicanx art, illustrating how artists foreground the Brown body to explore, expand, and complicate conceptions linked to Chicanx, Latinx and Xicanx experiences. The publication offers new insights into more than 50 years of Xicanx art, examining influential works by some 70 artists who highlight the Brown body as a site of resistance and who have created artistic communities that push against systemic racism and the exclusionary practices of mainstream art institutions. Thematic essays by renowned scholars address the ways in which Xicanx art lies at the intersection of the politics of identity, race and class, and interrogate questions of “high” and “low” culture.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisContemporary cameraless photography from master printer Michael Flomen. Master printer Michael Flomen expands his darkroom out into the wild to create large-scale, avant-garde, cameraless photograms in confluence with nature. From the streets of the world to the wilds of North America, this monograph traces in 182 images and 8 critical essays the evolution of Flomen’s originality of vision. As a way to take on abstraction with photography, Michael Flomen leaves behind the camera and embraces his light-sensitive materials. Elements such as water, the light emitted from fireflies, wind, rain, and other natural phenomena are emblematic of his work. Collaborating with nature, Flomen creates monumental photograms, revealing things we cannot see with the naked eye. The art in this book comes to us at a critical time when humanity is learning to mend its relationship with the environment.
