Book SynopsisJosef Frank, born 1885 in Baden near Vienna, ranks among Europe's most significant architects of the twentieth century. His designs for furniture and textiles also make him one of the eminent figures of modernist interior design. Born into a Jewish family, growing anti-Semitism forced him to emigrate in 1933. He first went to Sweden and in 1939 to the USA, returning to Sweden again in 1947, where he lived and worked until his death in 1967. Josef Frank - Spaces is the first comprehensive book on Frank's single-family houses. It explores the evolution of his designs over the years and investigates the influences that shaped his work: Adolf Loos's spatial plan concept, Le Corbusier's ideas, and Hermann Muthesius's seminal book The English House. It also looks at Frank's own architectural concepts of movement and stairs in residential buildings. The second part features six of Frank's houses in greater detail, including images and plans, and in descriptive texts that also interpret their characteristics. The selection comprises the villas Claeson and Wehtje in Falsterbo, Sweden, the villas Wien XIII and Beer in Vienna, the House MS in Los Angeles, and the unrealised Fantasy House 9 (Accidental House). A complete catalogue of Frank's single-family houses rounds out the book.

  • Architects on Dwelling

    Park Books Architects on Dwelling

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile most books on architecture focus on the architectural outcome itself, Architects on Dwelling takes a close look at how that outcome is created. To design any kind of dwelling, architects draw on both their reservoir of ideas as well as their own experiences as fellow inhabitants of such structures. This book explores how architects design the places we inhabit and how those places in turn inform the manner in which we live, in ways beyond lifestyle and personal taste. Through contributions by Stephen Hoey, Henry McKeown & Ian Alexander, James Mitchell, Stacey Philips, Christopher Platt, Adrian Stewart, and Miranda Webster—most of whom are Scotland-based practitioners as well as teachers in The Glasgow School of Art—it reveals the unique values and qualities that inform their design processes. In their essays, they focus mostly on one exemplary building, explaining how and why they design the way they do. Dick van Gameren, Simon Henley, and Graeme Hutton, distinguished experts and themselves architect-educators, place this work within an international context and provide insightful comment about what these design approaches inform us about contemporary design in Scotland. Complemented with a wide range of images, these essays both illuminate the architects’ motivations and inspirations and celebrate their featured works. Taken as a whole, Architects on Dwelling reminds us how profoundly the place we live in matters to our wellbeing, and of the social responsibility architects have in creating the built environment in general and dwellings in particular.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Elusive Modernist revisits the history of the Modern movement through the legacy of one of its protagonists, Gabriel Guevrekian (c. 1900—1970). Born in Istanbul, Guevrekian grew up in Tehran and then moved to Vienna to study architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule; he later worked with Oskar Strnad, Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Henri Sauvage, and Robert Mallet-Stevens and among his famous designs are the Cubist garden for Villa Noailles in France and two houses for the Vienna Werkbund exhibition. Not yet 30, Guevrekian was recognized as one of the protagonists of the European Avant-garde in Paris. During the 1930s, he spent a few years in Iran to design public buildings and later, after the Second World War, he took teaching responsibilities in Europe and America. All his various pursuits, and the homes and nationalities he held in Asia, Europe and then America, led to a serial adoption of personae. He made every discipline meaningful, every city central, every period epochal simply by his own very tangible engagement with it.

Book SynopsisChoreographies of Light Pitsou Kedem's spatial arrangements evoke a continuing shift of perspective: A recurring element of the Tel Aviv architect's buildings is the impressive double height living room that creates a connection between levels. Guided by fundamental principles of minimalism, the studio was involved in a constant pursuit of purity in order to reveal the essence of a space. After years of simplifying materials to the extent of avoiding all distractions, the architects began to add layers of materials as well as spatial layers. This comprehensive publication retraces the past 20 years of the Studio's practice. Alongside a photographic archive of its built history in Israel, it features Kedem's drawings and studies of light perforations from his time at the AA School of Architecture, highlighting his fascination for light as the characterizing element that is at the core of his architectural language.

Book SynopsisIn this essential TASCHEN introduction to Tadao Ando we explore the hybrid of tradition, modernism, and function that allows his buildings to enchant architects, designers, fashion designers, and beyond. Through key projects including private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces, we explore a uniquely monumental yet comforting aesthetic that draws as much on the calm restraint of Japanese tradition as the compelling modernist vocabularies of Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. With featured projects in Japan, France, Italy, Spain, and the United States, we see not only Ando's global reach but also his refined sensitivity for the environs: the play of light through windows, and, in particular, the interaction of buildings with water. From the mesmerizing Church of the Light in Osaka to the luminous Punta della Dogana Contemporary Art Center in Venice, this is a radiant tour through a distinctly contemporary form as much as a timeless appeal of light, elements, and equilibrium.

Book SynopsisHailing from Vienna, Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887–1953) emigrated to Chicago in 1914, like his lifelong friend and rival Richard Neutra. Eventually hired by Frank Lloyd Wright to work in Los Angeles, Schindler took cues from notions found in Cubism and the International Style to shape his unique vision: a style he called “space architecture,” combining geometrical shapes, bold lines, and materials such as wood and concrete, with space as a medium in its own right, one to be controlled just like color or mass. This radical approach earned Schindler little recognition in his lifetime—but today, he is hailed as one of America’s most important Modernist pioneers. Discover such key projects as the Wolfe House, nestled in a steep hillside; the tree house-like Falk Apartment Building; the Lovell Beach House, recognized as one of the foremost examples of the Modernist canon in America; the Schindler/Chace House, Schindler’s most crucial work and his personal practice and home, which he shared with his family and that of Neutra. From private homes to small commercial buildings, Schindler’s groundbreaking designs heralded a new era of contemporary construction. This collection is complete with a map locating all of the architect’s most renowned projects, detailed entries, floor plans, as well as crisp photography of each structure and its interiors.

The need for, and demands of, public spaces are highly specific to the local spatial and social conditions under which people live. Action at neighborhood level is crucial, and must involve interacting and co-creating with residents to discover their needs. At the start of the pandemic, superwien was commissioned to develop innovative designs for urban public spaces in three different cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Maputo (Mozambique), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The main objective of this applied research was to strengthen the capacity of local governments to undertake participatory urban design processes. Arquine Javier Senosiain - Organic Architecture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTo survey the work of Mexican architect Javier Senosiain (born 1948) requires a journey through a particular trajectory in the history of architecture, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruno Zevi to Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen and Jørn Utzon. These pioneers of organic modernism faced the 20th century’s mechanistic, functionalistic and rationalistic proposals with a vision that sought to revive an organic relationship between humans and their environments. Senosiain’s concept of “Organic Architecture” follows in this tradition. Throughout his career, Senosiain’s work has explored the relations between user, site and architecture in spaces that echo natural forms and conditions. “The concept of an organic habitat,” he writes, “is the creation of spaces adapted to man that are also similar to a mother’s bosom or an animal’s lair.” This volume surveys Senosiain’s work since the 1970s and his concept of “Organic Architecture.”

Book SynopsisThe volume Nicolas Party L’Heure Mauve collects a vast visual epic in which Party plays a variety of roles, sometimes impersonating the artist, others the scenographer, the conservator, or the sculptor. His work, and the title of the show, are inspired by L’Heure Mauve, a piece created in 1921 by the Canadian painter Ozlas Leduc that highlights the different interpretations given to the relationship between man and nature throughout the history of art. The result is a constantly changing natural environment: it can be a place full of danger and catastrophe, a territory to be conquered, an expanse disseminated with ancient ruins, or even silences where there are no traces of human presence. Nature finally becomes the theatre for the Anthropocene, its connection with humanity by now inextricable, and the passing of time and the finiteness of existence make way for a feeling of melancholy. Our artist interrogates the world’s image, and he does so by dialoguing very concretely with the spaces and the works belonging to the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The present volume reflects this personal evolution by employing a unique graphic framework and a packaging that is as precious as its contents. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisPublic interest in architecture and spatial issues has never been so high. The Flanders Architectural Review No.14 presents striking architecture from Flanders and Brussels. It assembles a broad range of recently completed architectural projects and situates them in the evolution of the socio-cultural domain in which they arose. The key concept for the selection of these projects is encapsulated in the title: When Attitudes Take Form. The editors chose architecture that demonstrates a convincing social commitment while also challenging and questioning its own discipline. These fifty projects display the multifaceted nature of the resulting architecture. Each of the twelve essays examines a current topic. The authors scrutinise the conditions for the production of contemporary architecture, such as the large-scale urban expansion project, the (post-) reconstruction landscape of the south-west corner of Flanders, and school building within the region. But they also explore the various positions adopted by architects: that of designer and also of researcher or committed citizen in the civil sector.

  • Revaluing Modern Architecture: Changing

RIBA Publishing Revaluing Modern Architecture: Changing

Book SynopsisThe conservation of our Modern architectural heritage is a subject of vehement debate. When do buildings become old or significant enough to warrant special heritage status and protection? Should Modern listed buildings be treated differently from those of earlier periods? And what does all this mean for building users and owners, who might be better served if their buildings were less authentic, but more comfortable and usable? Presenting a clear line of sight through these complex questions, this book explores the conservation, regeneration and adaptive re-use of Modern architecture. It provides a general grounding in the field, its recent history and current development, including chapters on authenticity, charters, listing and protection. Case studies drawing on the author’s extensive practical experience offer valuable lessons learnt in the conservation of Modern heritage buildings. Looking beyond the specialist field of ‘elite’ heritage, Revaluing Modern Architecture also considers the changing culture of conservation for ‘sub-iconic’ buildings in relation to de-carbonisation and the climate emergency. It suggests how revaluing the vast legacy of modern architecture can help to promote a more sustainable future. Features leading conservation projects, such as the celebrated Penguin Pool at London Zoo, Finsbury Health Centre by Lubetkin & Tecton and Wells Coates’ Isokon (Lawn Road) Flats, as well as previously unpublished projects. Book SynopsisThis is the first full biography of two of Scotland's most eminent Architects, James Miller and John James Burnet. While born just three years apart into very different circumstances - Burnet was the son of a wealthy Glasgow architect and Miller a farmer's son - their careers and lives became intertwined as they competed for work and eventually the role of Scotland's leading architect. Born in 1857 and 1860 respectively, one inherited and the other established successful practices in Glasgow at the zenith of that city's wealth in the late 19th century. John James Burnet, who was educated at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and led his profession in Glasgow in the latter years of the 19th and early years of the 20th centuries, produced many of the city's finest buildings. These include The Athenaeum on Buchanan Street; Charing Cross Mansions; numerous city-centre commercial buildings such as Waterloo Chambers and Atlantic Chambers and the Townhouses on University Avenue. After moving to London, his work included the extension of the British Museum, The Daily Telegraph Building on Fleet Street and Adelaide House by London Bridge. Burnet was knighted and awarded the RIBA's Gold Medal in 1923 and is recognized as one of Scotland's finest architects. James Miller is simply Scotland's most prolific architect. During his long career he designed The Empire Exhibition of 1901, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow Central Station, Wemyss Bay Station, St Enoch's Underground Station, Turnberry Hotel, Peebles Hydro Hotel, Gleneagles Hotel, the interiors of the SS Lusitania and SS Aquitania, Hampden Park, Forteviot Model Village, the Institution of Civil Engineers in Westminster, numerous banks, commercial buildings and churches in Glasgow and beyond as well as schools, country houses, factories and town halls. Despite this extraordinary output and his considerable architectural contribution to Scotland's heritage, he has received relatively little acclaim, until now. This is a fascinating double biography, the story of Burnet and Miller's parallel lives and work, set against the background of the booming Empire's 'Second City'.

Book SynopsisRarely is an architect as closely connected to his or her place of work as is the case with Armando Ruinelli, born 1954, and his native village of Soglio in Val Bregaglia, Switzerland. Yet, far from what one might expect with such a small and remote place of barely 100 inhabitants, the limitation in this case became a distinction. Ruinelli’s attitude and work have grown organically from the village’s strong stone-built dwellings. Thus, he has become an internationally revered master of building in existing fabric, in particular in an Alpine environment. This first monograph on Armando Ruinelli documents comprehensively his work over nearly four decades. It demonstrates the evolution of his architectural language from the first buildings in Soglio of the 1980s, to conversions of existing buildings and designs for new ones that continue local traditions but also meet today’s demands in housing, and to the latest works, such as the almost abstract studio for Swiss artist Miriam Cahn in Stampa. Photographs and plans, as well as a photo essay newly created for this book by Swiss photographer Katalin Deér, are supplemented with texts and conversations between Ruinelli and his equally renowned fellow architect Gion A. Caminada that illuminate the architect’s work and attitude and convey the particular features of his Alpine environment. Text in Italian and German.

Book SynopsisChristoph Hesse Architects are based in Berlin and Korbach, a small town in the northwestern part of the German federal state Hesse. This rural area in the green heart of Germany is the location of most of the projects the firm has realised since its establishment in 2010. Yet occasionally, they also set out to plant rural concepts in an urban context. Christoph Hesse Architects and their friends see their designs as open places of culture. Catalysts for change in thought on one hand, intended to change people''s perspectives and stimulate their self-efficacy in society. On the other hand, as actual interventions in existing, globally prevailing structures that can be disrupted and changed locally. Thus, the firm distinguishes between projects acting as perspective changes and as system changers.Rural Rebellion is the first monograph on Christoph Hesse Architects. It constitutes also a manifesto against the late modernity's economy, which they see as based on unrestrained exploitation of nature, social coldness, and dependent on globalised markets. The projects and completed designs featured in this book point at alternative paths to follow. They are presented through photos and visualisations, drawings and plans as well as brief texts and interviews with the rural rebels.

This monograph is a journey through the years and evolution of an architect who made a name for himself with true architectural marvels that cannot be surpassed in innovation, elegance, and sensibility. View a two-story penthouse on top of a 140-year-old New York City landmark cast-iron house, the Swatch/Omega Campus in Switzerland, and the Seine Musicale, a concert hall inserted into an overall master plan conceived by Jean Nouvel for the island Île Seguin i
