Book SynopsisA passion for luxury and beauty propels the multifaceted work of acclaimed international architect and interior designer Robert Couturier. Robert Couturier’s aesthetic is a dialogue between Old World elegance and contemporary design. His masterful approach effortlessly brings eras together, for example a Louis XVI commode with a 1960s lamp. Couturier’s name has become synonymous with continental and international style, and he is known for composing adventurous rooms that have a witty flair. All his interiors extol the importance of how a home should stimulate the five senses, from the tactile feel of upholstery to the visual presentation of objects that leads a person through a space. The book opens with a tour of Couturier’s country retreat in bucolic Kent, Connecticut. Composed of neoclassical-style pavilions, early American guesthouses, and beautiful gardens, the house features imaginative rooms that are filled with his collections of European art, furniture, and Trade Review“Many in the design field consider themselves mix masters, but interior decorator and architect Robert Couturier’s adventurous spirit and in-depth knowledge of antiques result in the most astounding combinations. His first monograph, Robert Couturier: Designing Paradises, shows that this Paris-born, Manhattan-based talent can delight and enlighten while breaking all the rules.” –Architectural Digest “The title says it all: Robert Couturier: Designing Paradises provides an entry to the refined world of this French-born, American-based interiors star. The tome opens with the designer’s own home — a country retreat in Kent, Conn., whose rooms are dressed with a carefully curated mix of antique French furniture and Early American pieces. Also featured: one of Couturier’s most famous projects — a 20,000-acre Mexican resort that he designed for English entrepreneur James Goldsmith — as well as his polished contemporary designs for Manhattan high-rise apartments.” –The New York Post“Robert Couturier is known for his command of decorative history matched with a deft ability to layer those styles, resulting in sumptuous, elegantly appointed homes that balance complexity with comfort.” –Vogue “In a time when finesse often takes a backseat to invention, I find his straightforwardness incredibly refreshing. And let’s be honest -- even I need a reminder sometimes! This body of work demonstrates that coloring inside the lines can still be a wonderfully creative pursuit.” –Martha Stewart Living“…guaranteed to inspire just about every corner of your life. When you have as masterful an understanding of decorative history as Robert Couturier, mixing pieces…results in an explosion of glamour rather than a mixed-up mess...inspiring book.” –One King’s Lane“Couturier is known for his ability to capture the essence of place and for seamlessly integrating modern elements with period architecture and details. The book is a must-have; it’s a master class, not only in interior design and architecture, but also the art of living well.” –What is James Wearing “A passion for luxury and beauty propels the multifaceted work of international architect and interior designer Robert Couturier. In his new book, Robert Couturier Designing Paradises, the dialogue between Old World elegance and contemporary design is on display. A selection of the designer’s other projects—from contemporary apartments to Mexican villas to a stately English manor—provide further design inspiration.” –Editor at Large “It is not surprising that the projects in Robert Couturier Designing Paradises are all beautiful, executed with an eye for exacting elegance. What is surprising, however, is how very personal the book is. But then again, that is a key component to Robert’s work. That, his unerring passion for perfection and, as Caroline Weber quotes in her thoughtful postface, the Baudelairian qualities of “luxe, calme et volupté.” –Quintessence “This is a beautiful book full of luxury but also little surprises such as bursts of vibrant color and even two whimsical, felted wool sheep in a contemporary Midtown Manhattan apartment." –Indulge Magazine“More than a quarter century has passed since billionaire financier Jimmy Goldsmith tapped Robert Couturier to design his Mexican estate, Cuixmala. The project solidified the Frenchman’s year-old, New York-based interiors studio and catapulted it into notoriety. Couturier has kept up the high profile since that first splash, resisting colleagues’ insistence that he publish a monograph. “Most of these surveys are pretentious,” he laughs. The designer finally succumbed to pressure with Robert Couturier: Designing Paradises...To create a more humble connection with the reader, the first half of the book explores his residence in Kent, Connecticut, in intimate detail. The latter spans Couturier’s professional portfolio, whose multiple interpretations of luxury further reflects his grounded attitude." -Cultured“Robert Couturier: Designing Paradises, is a lively, personal affair, with a large section dedicated to his own home in Kent, Connecticut. The rest of the 224-page tome showcases just a few of Couturier’s most emblematic projects over 30 years, many done in his signature classical French style roughed up with a sense of humor. From a sprawling Mexican hacienda to a modern Manhattan apartment, the pages pay testament to Couturier’s aesthetic versatility—it ends up being anything but an epitaph.” –Departures “Robert Couturier is known for his command of decorative history matched with a deft ability to layer those styles, resulting in sumptuous, elegantly appointed homes that balance complexity with comfort. While the book presents a lush range of his project styles—modernism and even mid-century included—it is his Kent, Connecticut estate where his antiquarian tastes shine.” –Vogue “One of the best interior design books of the season has me fantasizing about who I would have design rooms for me, and Robert Couturier is one of those few I imagine creating my ideal room. The book's cover showcases what makes Robert Couturier such a favorite of mine. His genius is in melding quite distinctly different design periods, reimagining them together in paradisaical harmony. He does so impeccably.” –Little Augury“Grand yet comfortable, posh but playful, the homes this celebrated designer creates for himself and his high-flying clients—prove that spaces need not be fussy to be fabulous.” –1st Dibs“Feast your eyes on gorgeous images by touring Couturier’s country retreat in bucolic Kent, Connecticut that reflects his passion for luxury and beauty.” –Society Diaries“Robert Couturier Designing Paradises is a luxurious world vacation in a smooth hardbound cover. Robert is just so incredibly likable and dripping with style that he can't help but radiate through the pages of the book via his imagery and stories…this book exploring the famed designer's work... it's delicious. The book patiently covers one sprawling escape from reality at a time. This book will inspire you to reach beyond your present idea of how you spend your leisure time. Grab a copy of Robert Couturier Designing Paradises and curl up with your tea, your sketchbook and expect to find yourself mapping out a far more thrilling plan for your future.” –Life in a Venti Cup “Couturier has an imaginative way of working with art, and art with an international flavor. Add in his collection of beautiful furniture and decorative objects and the effect is stunning. If you are wanting to learn to educate your eye, this book is an eye-opener. You may never have clients such as this, but there is something to be taken away on many levels.” –Examinar.com

Book SynopsisAn ode to the classic Spanish-style houses of Santa Barbara. Spanish Colonial Style celebrates an extraordinary tradition in architecture whose hallmarks include whitewashed stucco and plaster walls, wood-beamed ceilings, dramatic fireplaces, and, above all, mystery and romance. Homes in this much-loved style of architecture welcome the visitor and embrace the resident, and architects James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig, early proponents of the style and influential disseminators of it, were masters of the form. Their work, until now, has been largely underappreciated and little seen. The Craigs played pivotal roles in the development of the Spanish Colonial Revival and of other styles of architecture in Santa Barbara, and the influence of their work spread much beyond that. EAA''s roots are in modernism''s honesty of structure, expression, and materials, yet their projects are tempered by the context and the tradition and culture from which they spring. The book highlights thirty-two projects across Turkey, England, Portugal, and the United States. Projects include the award-winning Sancaklar mosque, built in a cavelike space with walls of concrete and slate, which seamlessly blend in with the topography; the architect sought to strip away design conventions and return to the essence of Islamic philosophy. The Museum Hotel Antakya engages a novel design strategy for a hospitality center, which straddles archaeological findings: it is built alongside the ruins o

Not since Jacqueline Kennedy's iconic work on the White House has a designer of Michael Smith's stature been commissioned to bring a new design spirit to the mansion. Through extensive photography, behind-the-scenes stories, and rich archival material, the book places the Obama White House within the context of the building's storied past and its evolution over the past two centuries. The book beautifully documents the process of updating the country's most symbolic reTrade Review"Smith's modern designs for the White House made history, just as the Obamas' presence was, in itself, trailblazing. Further, all changes to the White House's private residences were added to the 250-year-long history in every room—a place where layers of wallpaper tell a story of past administrations." — OPRAH.COM"Michelle Obama provides the foreword to this insider’s look at interior designer Michael S. Smith’s decoration of the Obama White House. Created for design enthusiasts, political aficionados, and students of Americana, the book documents Smith’s collaboration with the Obamas. With 230 photographs, behind-the-scenes stories, and archival material, Designing History places the Obama White House within the context of the building’s storied past and its evolution over the past two centuries." — PUBLISHERS WEEKLY"In 2008, designer Michael S. Smith got the commission of a lifetime: designing the interiors for the Obama White House. In this book, the designer takes readers inside the process of decorating for the First Family and shares the illustrious history of interior design in the People's House. Oh, and there's a foreword by Michelle Obama." —HOUSE BEAUTIFUL "The decorator Michael Smith, who has transformed interiors for the Obamas, Rupert Murdoch and Cindy Crawford, is spilling paint in a new book." —NEW YORK TIMES"Decorators often lament the fact that once a room is redone, nobody remembers their work. For Michael S. Smith, documenting his design of the Obama White House—and processing the eight years he shuttled back and forth to Washington, D.C., for the first family after an introduction from Obama’s social secretary, Desirée Rogers—became a personal mission. 'It was important to kind of take a moment and not just let history flow by,' he says. The result is Designing History: The Extraordinary Art & Style of the Obama White House, a monograph out now from Rizzoli that situates the Obamas’ friendly, unpretentious décor within the snow globe of White House style." —WSJ. MAGAZINE"Smith offers readers an inside look at his work ushering in a new era of decor at the historic residence." —IN STYLE"...by far the most comprehensive illustrated record of the executive mansion and Smith's deep dive into the history of the white house, as he helped the Obamas update the stolid mansion with a more contemporary and open aesthetic, easing the burdens of a young family living in the White House." — TOWN & COUNTRY"Smith shares everything from the advice he got from Nancy Reagan to the secret code his staff used to refer to the Obamas." —BUSINESSOFHOME.COM"'Designing History,' the new publication by Michael S Smith, is about the world's most famous house and its continuous design legacy. But it is much more than a document on decorating the White House, the mansion which continues to fascinate and inspire all Americans. It is about a relationship forged between a client and a decorator, a connection crucial to the success of any project. 'Designing History' provides a glimpse into the private lives of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama during their eight years in office (2009-17). The text and wonderful photographs bring to life the spaces hosted their legacy and achievements – being the first African American president in US history, the Affordable Care Act, or the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals – through the décor they chose to live in." —DANIELLAONDESIGN.COM"Created for design enthusiasts, political aficionados, and students of Americana, Designing History documents Michael Smith’s extraordinary collaboration with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama."—LOVE HAPPENS "In Designing History, Smith catalogs his collaboration with the First Family with behind-the-scenes photos, design schemes, room renderings, and more, documenting the artists and craftspeople integral in the reimagining of the home. Interestingly, the White House’s storied decorative past—as Smith, a self-described student of history, discovered through letters written by Mary Todd Lincoln, archival records of Jackie Kennedy, and present-day calls with Nancy Reagan, a friend—helped inform the Obama-era design plans." —ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST.COM "Reading this book was a joy. I spent the better part of a day and a half reading its 300+ pages and hated that it came to an end. I was hungry for even more."—COTE DE TEXAS"...full of behind-the-scenes insight...takes readers room by room through Smith’s overhaul of the former First Family’s private residence." —WASHINGTONIAN"But the book chronicles much more than the Smith’s reservedly-polished interiors for the first family; it’s an important historical volume highlighting the fabled rooms and furnishings of America’s most famous mansion. Written and produced in conjunction with legendary design editor Margaret Russell, this is a book to savor slowly to fully appreciate the arc of the White House from past to present. And if you’re looking for inspiration, you’ll be thrilled to see story boards of the paint colors, fabrics and wallpapers, and furniture designs." — INTERIORDESIGNMASTERCLASS.COM "Written alongside journalist Margaret Russell, the book provides a detailed history of the White House's layout and contents." — CNN"Through photography, archival materials and behind-the-scenes stories, this book documents the history of the White House and designer Michael Smith's collaboration with the Obamas to decorate and update the residence to reflect the First Family's youthful spirit." —COTTAGES & GARDENS"Despite the pressure that inevitably comes with redesigning the White House, interior designer Michael S. Smith’s priority for the Obama family’s tenure at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, as with any residential project, was to create a home for the family to thrive. In Designing History, Smith catalogs his collaboration with the first family with behind-the-scenes photos, design schemes, room renderings, and more, documenting the artists, craftspeople, and historical findings integral in the reimagining of the home." — ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST.COM

Designers Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe are fascinated by how a room can come together to express its own persona, as though the design just happened. Describing themselves as object-obsessed observers, Nickey and Kehoe pay keen attention to their clients' passions, preferences, and beloved pieces, juxtaposing elements and styles in deceptively simple ways. The result is interior design that appears as if it were a personal collection randomly put together, when in fact it is the product of their very mindful curating.Nickey Kehoe's studied but unfussy design is elegant but never staid, proud but humble, full of detail but resplendent with negative space. There is a kind of golden glow about each of their creations.
