Book SynopsisToday, the Kunsthaus Graz is integral to the urban identity of Austria’s second-largest city. The “friendly alien” designed by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier has become a familiar object in the city since landing in 2003. But views on the building have changed with the times. Looking back at nearly twenty years of history since the building's creation, the book opens up a kaleidoscopic perspective with a primary focus on how the Kunsthaus is used. It contextualizes the Kunsthaus Graz both locally and globally while exploring its relation to those who use it. With written contributions by Barbara Steiner, Sophia Walk, Pablo von Frankenberg, Anselm Wagner, Katia Huemer, Niels Jonkhans, Elisabeth Schlögl, Peter Cook, and Colin Fournier, and photographic contributions by Arthur Zalewski and Martin Grabner

  • Javier Senosiain - Organic Architecture

Arquine Javier Senosiain - Organic Architecture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTo survey the work of Mexican architect Javier Senosiain (born 1948) requires a journey through a particular trajectory in the history of architecture, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruno Zevi to Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen and Jørn Utzon. These pioneers of organic modernism faced the 20th century’s mechanistic, functionalistic and rationalistic proposals with a vision that sought to revive an organic relationship between humans and their environments. Senosiain’s concept of “Organic Architecture” follows in this tradition. Throughout his career, Senosiain’s work has explored the relations between user, site and architecture in spaces that echo natural forms and conditions. “The concept of an organic habitat,” he writes, “is the creation of spaces adapted to man that are also similar to a mother’s bosom or an animal’s lair.” This volume surveys Senosiain’s work since the 1970s and his concept of “Organic Architecture.”

Book SynopsisThe volume Nicolas Party L’Heure Mauve collects a vast visual epic in which Party plays a variety of roles, sometimes impersonating the artist, others the scenographer, the conservator, or the sculptor. His work, and the title of the show, are inspired by L’Heure Mauve, a piece created in 1921 by the Canadian painter Ozlas Leduc that highlights the different interpretations given to the relationship between man and nature throughout the history of art. The result is a constantly changing natural environment: it can be a place full of danger and catastrophe, a territory to be conquered, an expanse disseminated with ancient ruins, or even silences where there are no traces of human presence. Nature finally becomes the theatre for the Anthropocene, its connection with humanity by now inextricable, and the passing of time and the finiteness of existence make way for a feeling of melancholy. Our artist interrogates the world’s image, and he does so by dialoguing very concretely with the spaces and the works belonging to the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The present volume reflects this personal evolution by employing a unique graphic framework and a packaging that is as precious as its contents. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisPublic interest in architecture and spatial issues has never been so high. The Flanders Architectural Review No.14 presents striking architecture from Flanders and Brussels. It assembles a broad range of recently completed architectural projects and situates them in the evolution of the socio-cultural domain in which they arose. The key concept for the selection of these projects is encapsulated in the title: When Attitudes Take Form. The editors chose architecture that demonstrates a convincing social commitment while also challenging and questioning its own discipline. These fifty projects display the multifaceted nature of the resulting architecture. Each of the twelve essays examines a current topic. The authors scrutinise the conditions for the production of contemporary architecture, such as the large-scale urban expansion project, the (post-) reconstruction landscape of the south-west corner of Flanders, and school building within the region. But they also explore the various positions adopted by architects: that of designer and also of researcher or committed citizen in the civil sector.

  • Revaluing Modern Architecture: Changing

RIBA Publishing Revaluing Modern Architecture: Changing

Book SynopsisThe conservation of our Modern architectural heritage is a subject of vehement debate. When do buildings become old or significant enough to warrant special heritage status and protection? Should Modern listed buildings be treated differently from those of earlier periods? And what does all this mean for building users and owners, who might be better served if their buildings were less authentic, but more comfortable and usable? Presenting a clear line of sight through these complex questions, this book explores the conservation, regeneration and adaptive re-use of Modern architecture. It provides a general grounding in the field, its recent history and current development, including chapters on authenticity, charters, listing and protection. Case studies drawing on the author’s extensive practical experience offer valuable lessons learnt in the conservation of Modern heritage buildings. Looking beyond the specialist field of ‘elite’ heritage, Revaluing Modern Architecture also considers the changing culture of conservation for ‘sub-iconic’ buildings in relation to de-carbonisation and the climate emergency. It suggests how revaluing the vast legacy of modern architecture can help to promote a more sustainable future. Features leading conservation projects, such as the celebrated Penguin Pool at London Zoo, Finsbury Health Centre by Lubetkin & Tecton and Wells Coates’ Isokon (Lawn Road) Flats, as well as previously unpublished projects. Analyses key Modern conservation controversies of recent years Illustrated with over 160 photos and drawings. • Whittles Publishing The Life and Works of Glasgow Architects James

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first full biography of two of Scotland's most eminent Architects, James Miller and John James Burnet. While born just three years apart into very different circumstances - Burnet was the son of a wealthy Glasgow architect and Miller a farmer's son - their careers and lives became intertwined as they competed for work and eventually the role of Scotland's leading architect. Born in 1857 and 1860 respectively, one inherited and the other established successful practices in Glasgow at the zenith of that city's wealth in the late 19th century. John James Burnet, who was educated at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and led his profession in Glasgow in the latter years of the 19th and early years of the 20th centuries, produced many of the city's finest buildings. These include The Athenaeum on Buchanan Street; Charing Cross Mansions; numerous city-centre commercial buildings such as Waterloo Chambers and Atlantic Chambers and the Townhouses on University Avenue. After moving to London, his work included the extension of the British Museum, The Daily Telegraph Building on Fleet Street and Adelaide House by London Bridge. Burnet was knighted and awarded the RIBA's Gold Medal in 1923 and is recognized as one of Scotland's finest architects. James Miller is simply Scotland's most prolific architect. During his long career he designed The Empire Exhibition of 1901, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow Central Station, Wemyss Bay Station, St Enoch's Underground Station, Turnberry Hotel, Peebles Hydro Hotel, Gleneagles Hotel, the interiors of the SS Lusitania and SS Aquitania, Hampden Park, Forteviot Model Village, the Institution of Civil Engineers in Westminster, numerous banks, commercial buildings and churches in Glasgow and beyond as well as schools, country houses, factories and town halls. Despite this extraordinary output and his considerable architectural contribution to Scotland's heritage, he has received relatively little acclaim, until now. This is a fascinating double biography, the story of Burnet and Miller's parallel lives and work, set against the background of the booming Empire's 'Second City'.

Book SynopsisRarely is an architect as closely connected to his or her place of work as is the case with Armando Ruinelli, born 1954, and his native village of Soglio in Val Bregaglia, Switzerland. Yet, far from what one might expect with such a small and remote place of barely 100 inhabitants, the limitation in this case became a distinction. Ruinelli’s attitude and work have grown organically from the village’s strong stone-built dwellings. Thus, he has become an internationally revered master of building in existing fabric, in particular in an Alpine environment. This first monograph on Armando Ruinelli documents comprehensively his work over nearly four decades. It demonstrates the evolution of his architectural language from the first buildings in Soglio of the 1980s, to conversions of existing buildings and designs for new ones that continue local traditions but also meet today’s demands in housing, and to the latest works, such as the almost abstract studio for Swiss artist Miriam Cahn in Stampa. Photographs and plans, as well as a photo essay newly created for this book by Swiss photographer Katalin Deér, are supplemented with texts and conversations between Ruinelli and his equally renowned fellow architect Gion A. Caminada that illuminate the architect’s work and attitude and convey the particular features of his Alpine environment. Text in Italian and German.

Book SynopsisChristoph Hesse Architects are based in Berlin and Korbach, a small town in the northwestern part of the German federal state Hesse. This rural area in the green heart of Germany is the location of most of the projects the firm has realised since its establishment in 2010. Yet occasionally, they also set out to plant rural concepts in an urban context. Christoph Hesse Architects and their friends see their designs as open places of culture. Catalysts for change in thought on one hand, intended to change people''s perspectives and stimulate their self-efficacy in society. On the other hand, as actual interventions in existing, globally prevailing structures that can be disrupted and changed locally. Thus, the firm distinguishes between projects acting as perspective changes and as system changers.Rural Rebellion is the first monograph on Christoph Hesse Architects. It constitutes also a manifesto against the late modernity's economy, which they see as based on unrestrained exploitation of nature, social coldness, and dependent on globalised markets. The projects and completed designs featured in this book point at alternative paths to follow. They are presented through photos and visualisations, drawings and plans as well as brief texts and interviews with the rural rebels.

Book SynopsisPublished in association with Places Journal.Trade Review"All too timely."--Carol Tavris, Wall Street Journal "[A] slim but sharp volume on problems women face in the architecture profession... [A] concise, accessible book."--Publishers Weekly "An excellent introduction to the recurring question that serves as the volume's title... Compact but thorough."--Library Journal, starred review "Where Are the Women Architects? ... explores the reasons why female designers have struggled to gain a foothold in the profession, despite recent efforts and campaigns, and why the attrition of women in the profession continues... From a look at Mattel's architecture Barbie, an intervention in popular culture, to an exploration of the campaign to pressure the Pritzker committee to give equal recognition to Denise Scott Brown (partner and wife of Pritzker laureate Robert Venturi) [Stratigakos] explores numerous facets of architecture's gender imbalance."--Patrick Sisson, Curbed "The book is an excellent primer if you already are concerned about the topic--but especially if you are not."--Anthony Paletta, Urban Land "Stratigakos does not analyze inequalities from afar. She documents interventions and, in some cases, she is among the main instigators. Though Stratigakos is an academic architectural historian, her own agency is a wonderful departure from the typical academic's distance from their subject."--Raj Mankad, OffCite.org "'Male-dominated' is an understatement in architecture... In this slim chronicle, architectural historian Despina Stratigakos incisively catalogues the setbacks."--Books in Brief "The insidious and hidden nature of ... internalized bias is perhaps the most compelling reason why all architects--especially those that don't think that gender equity affects them--ought to examine this issue in greater depth to see if they may unwittingly be taking part. Many architects strive to create socially-minded physical places that encourage access for all. It's imperative to ensure that the same kind of equity is being built into the profession itself."--Elsa Lam, Canadian Architect "[A] concise, highly readable book... The first chapter, in essence a history of women in architecture, gives an illuminating and detailed account of events in the US."--Flora Samuel, Times Higher Education "An important contribution to the discussion of gender and equity in architecture, Where Are the Women Architects? advances a deeper agenda: to document the swell of grassroots and institutional efforts to promote women in architecture and to mobilize new initiatives... What if it became required reading for introductory survey courses on architectural history and theory? [Stratigakos'] call to action--that equity is everyone's issue--is urgent, and it is up to all of us to pick up the charge."--Caroline James, ArchitectureBoston "In 2015, when Britain's Architecture Journal asked its readers whether they would encourage a woman to enter the profession only half said yes. Despina Stratigakos' compact book replies to this impasse and in doing so, it offers moments of despair and delight in rendering the place of women within the practice and culture of architecture... Stratigakos' provocations render this a valuable read. In fields beyond architecture too, where the loss of women eliminates a 'large and vital art of talent pool' to the detriment of both a discipline but also more broadly the community it serves by not being reflective of its make up. Perhaps in wrestling with these questions we might illuminate a path towards more sustainable forms of practice, for all practitioners--women or men."--Kerstin Thompson, Sydney Morning Herald "Reviewing criticism of women architects from each historical period and citing surveys from architects, for the most part conducted over the last decade, Stratigakos challenges stereotypes and refutes ideologies that have remained prevalent within general society and are operant within schools of architecture, architectural organizations, and the profession... [An] affirming volume."--ChoiceTable of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction: Where Are the Women Architects? 1 1. May Women Practice Architecture? The First Century of Debate 5 2. Book SynopsisAfrican American artist Faith Ringgold narrates the events of her life from her childhood in 1930s Harlem to her stellar careers as both a best-selling children's writer and well-respected artist whose "story quilts" are displayed in museums worldwide.Trade Review“Bridging is the major motif of Ringgold’s life. . . . She is a bridge between the Harlem Renaissance and the civil rights era. She is a bridge between her mother’s applied art of fashion design and her own fine art of painting and story quilts. She is a bridge between the black power movement and the women’s movement. And she is a bridge between the abstract art that dominated the ‘60s and the issue-oriented art that connected with viewers’ hearts—and lives.”—Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer“Faith Ringgold has already won my heart as an artist, as a woman, as an African American, and now with her entry into the world of autobiography (where I dwell), she has taken my heart again. She writes so beautifully.”—Maya Angelou“Faith Ringgold has created a rich and highly informative work not only of her own life as an American in general but as an African American in particular. These memoirs are a part of American history—of what it means to be an artist, a writer, and a philosopher in our society.”—Jacob Lawrence“Faith Ringgold’s exuberant and original art has made her one of America’s more important artists and a feminist heroine. Now her wonderfully honest memoirs will resonate with all political and creative women who are still fighting the battles Ringgold has won.”—Lucy Lippard, author of The Pink Glass Swan: Selected Essays on Feminist Art“In words that are as direct, honest, full of color and life as her paintings, Ringgold gives each reader the greatest gift of all—courage to be one’s own unique and universal self.”—Gloria Steinem“The story of Ringgold’s triumph—achieved through sheer determination, savvy, and self-conviction—is both accessible and inspiring.”—Lowery Stokes Sims, executive director, the Studio Museum in Harlem“Ringgold provides juicy autobiographical stories, supplemented with personal photographs as well as ample illustrations and descriptions of her work. It is a memoir every artist should read. . . . The book is informative, forthright, and fun, and is a great teaching tool for both emerging and established artists.” -- Joyce Owens Anderson * Journal of African American History *Table of ContentsPreface xi Acknowledgments Introduction Part I: Harlem Born and Bred 1. His personal design drawings - seen either as a method of discovery or for themselves - are unique in the twentieth century. Over two hundred - mostly unpublished - drawings by Kahn and his associates are woven together with a lively and informed commentary into an intimate biography of an architectural idea. Unfolding around the iconic project for the Dominican Motherhouse (1965 - 69) the drawings form a narrative which not only reveals the richness and hidden dimensions of this unbuilt masterpiece, but provides compelling insights into Louis Kahn's mature culture of designing. Kahn - long considered an architects' architectA" - emerges as a vivid and instructive guide, provoking reflection on questions which continue to remain relevant: on how works are conceived, on how they might be perceived, on how they become part of human experience. Fascinating not only in their beauty, the drawings open a new and stimulating perspective on one of the past century's great architects.

  • Geoffrey Bawa: Drawing from the Archives

Lars Muller Publishers Geoffrey Bawa: Drawing from the Archives

Book SynopsisThe Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa (1919–2003) fused sensitivity for local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. Accordingly, Bawa often incorporated materials (local stone and timber) and layouts (high roofs, cross-ventilation, vast overhangs) specific to Sri Lanka’s monsoon climate and storied architectural history – from the cave monasteries of the Anuradhapura period to the feudal Walauwa style of manor houses – into his modernist designs. Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines – including architecture, photography, geography, urban design and art history – this volume spotlights Bawa’s exceptionally beautiful architectural drawings, delving into the central, multipronged role of the medium in his practice, from ideation to instruction to post-construction review. The anthology also explores the identity of post-independence Sri Lanka, which Bawa helped to shape – aesthetically and, less overtly, ideologically. Featuring over 200 lush drawings and photographs, many of which have never been published before, the book promises to engage both general and scholarly audiences with interests in architecture, drawing and archives.

Book SynopsisScottish architect, designer, and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was one of the earliest pioneers of modern architecture and design. While he did not receive much recognition in his hometown of Glasgow during his lifetime, his bold new blend of simplicity and poetic detail inspired modernists across Europe. Mackintosh’s avant-garde approach embraced a variety of media as well as fresh stylistic devices. His multi-faceted oeuvre incorporated architecture, furniture, graphic design, landscapes, and flower studies. He embraced strong lines, elegant proportions, and natural motifs, combining an adventurous dose of japonisme with a modernist sensibility for function. He preferred bold black typography, restrained shapes, and tall, generous windows suffusing rooms with light. Much of his work was collaborative practice with his wife, fellow artist Margaret Macdonald. The couple made up half of the loose Glasgow collective known as “The Four”; the other two were Margaret’s sister, Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair. On the continent, the “Glasgow Style” was met with delight. In Italy, Germany, and, in particular, Austria, artists of the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau drew much from its rectilinear yet lyrical forms. In this introductory book, we take in Mackintosh’s practice across art, architecture, and design to explore his particular combination of the statuesque and sensual and its vital influence on modernist expression across Europe. Featured projects include his complete scheme for the Willow Tea Rooms and the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, widely considered Mackintosh’s masterwork.

Book SynopsisInternationally renowned, Peter Rich’s career represents a lifelong attempt to find a contemporary, yet uniquely African mode of design. This book follows the chronology of his work which emerges from a fascination with African indigenous settlements, including his documentation, publication and exhibition of Ndebele art and architecture, and his friendship with sculptor Jackson Hlungwani. It explores what Rich calls 'African Space Making' and its forms of complex symmetry; various collaborative community oriented designs of the Apartheid and post-Apartheid period, especially Mandela's Yard in Alexandra township; and finally, his more recent timbrel vaulted structures, constructed from low-tech hand-pressed soil tiles derived from his highly innovative and award winning work at Mapungubwe. The book shows how Rich combines African influences with an environmental awareness aligned to Modernist principles.Table of Contents1. An Artist, a Dreamer and a Clown; 2. • People Cities: The Life and Legacy of Jan Gehl

Island Press People Cities: The Life and Legacy of Jan Gehl

Book Synopsis"A good city is like a good-party," you stay for longer than you plan," says Danish architect Jan Gehl. He believes that good architecture is not about form, but about the interaction between-form and life. Over-the last 50 years, Gehl has changed the way that we think about architecture and city planning, moving from the Modernist separation of uses to a human-scale approach inviting people to use their cities. At a time when growing numbers are populating cities, planning urban spaces to be humane, safe, and open to 'all' is ever-more critical. With the help of Jan Gehl, we can all become advocates for human scale design. Jan's research, theories, and strategies have been helping cities to reclaim their public space and recover from the great post-WWII car invasion. His work has influenced public space improvements in over 50 global cities, including New York, London, Moscow, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, and the authors' hometown of Perth. While much has been written by Jan Gehl about his approach and by others about his influence, this book tells the inside story of how he learned to Study urban spaces and implement his people-centred approach.People Cities discusses the work, theory, life, and influence of Jan Gehl from the perspective of those who have worked with him across the globe. Authors Matan and Newman celebrate Jan's role in changing the urban planning paradigm from an abstract, ideological modernism to a people-focused movement. It is organised around the creation of that movement, using key periods in Jan's working life as a structure. People Cities will inspire anyone who wants to create vibrant, human-scale cities and understand the ideas and work of an architect who has most influenced how we should and can design cities for people.

Book Synopsis"We do not live only with clear-cut forms;rather, we exist in a world of forms that are often indistinct and vague." —Takashi Sugimoto, architect and James Beard Award-winning authorSuper Potato Design presents the work of internationally-renowned Japanese designer Takashi Sugimoto. After studying metal sculpture at Tokyo University of Fine Arts, Sugimoto began his career designing a series of bars and restaurants including the iconic Radio Bar that became a favorite hangout for designers like Issey Miyake, Ikko Tanaka, Yohji Yamamoto and Tadao Ando. He was soon recruited to design retail spaces including the original Muji "no-brand" shops along with hotels, tea ceremony spaces and wedding chapels.Super Potato's striking interiors have totally revolutionized Japanese design through the use of exposed concrete surfaces, rough-hewn timber and unevenly cut stone juxtaposed with salvaged metal and repurposed objects to create a sense of power and timelessness. The design vocabulary created by Sugimoto is universally imitated today (in Japan and throughout the world). It is what we now think of as "modern Japanese design"—although Sugimoto's own work has never been surpassed.Super Potato Design presents 40 of Sugimoto's most important projects in 320 full-color photographs by Yoshio Shiratori, who has worked with the designer since the beginning. Author and architect Mira Locher introduces Sugimoto's work and provides a thorough description for each project. A foreword by Tadao Ando and discussions with architect Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama and graphic designer Kenya Hara explore the direction of Japanese design today. A list of Super Potato's complete works rounds off this fascinating book.Trade Review**2008 Interior Design Magazine Hall of Fame Inductee**"We do not live only with clear-cut forms; rather, we exist in a world of forms that are often indistinct and vague." --Takashi Sugimoto, architect and James Beard Award-winning author

Book SynopsisAlso available as Art Edition (No. 1–1,000) including an exclusive, square format reproduction of the Arlecchino coffee table and a set of four numbered ocean liner interior prints. To study Gio Ponti’s prolific body of work is to appreciate the clear, unifying vision behind a complex creative universe. A synthesis of the arts, his creations expand intuitively with the Italian grandeur and studied lightness that defined his iconic style. Ponti’s rare capacity to move seamlessly between scales allowed him to approach the design of a teaspoon with the same conviction as he did an entire city. He was as much an architect and designer as he was a publisher, poet, and man. A treasure in its own regard, his contribution is also a distinctive landmark of Italy’s mid-century Renaissance and the modernist values it sought to realize. This is the most comprehensive account of Ponti’s work to date, unprecedented in scale and scope. It tracks the development of his oeuvre over 6 decades, with 136 projects indexed and reproduced in high resolution, each object framed by the context in which Ponti had created it. Like windows onto his elusive life, unpublished materials and candid imagery create new dialogues between his famous masterpieces and his lesser-known feats. A rich layer of texts, featuring an extensive biographical essay by Stefano Casciani, was produced in close collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives offering an intimate insight on his life’s work. Materializing Ponti’s core philosophy of modernity, this book presents architecture as a performing object, a "self-illuminating" stage for his humanistic art de vivre and boundless creativity.Trade Review“TASCHEN comes through with Gio Ponti… Think of it not as a book but as a vehicle for an incredible journey.” * The Los Angeles Times *“…the iconic Italian architect and designer’s greatest works.” * eveningstandard.co.uk *“…a fascinating glimpse into the life and vast catalog of work of Italian architect Gio Ponti.” * fastcompany.com *“This prodigious volume features unpublished materials and candid imagery offering exciting new insight into both his well-known masterpieces and more obscure feats alike.” * surfacemag.com *“Gio Ponti offers a technicolor glimpse into the life and work of the godfather of Milanese design.” * interviewmagazine.com *“Gio Ponti aims to be the final say about the designer’s work and importance.” * architectmagazine.com *“…an absolute beauty about the refined Italian architect-designer who defined a vein of elegant, uncontroversial mid-century chic.” * The Financial Times *“…a tour de force investigation of the designer’s oeuvre.” * architecturaldigest.com *“There’s an irony here, that a prince of lightness such as Ponti should be remembered with something so massive, but it’s hard to do justice to his output in any other way… It successfully captures Ponti’s spirit.” * The Observer *“The book is full of revelations.
