Book SynopsisThis monograph explores the work of Holly & Smith Architects (H/S) over the past 40 years. This compilation of some of the firm’s most recent work demonstrates the designer’s deep respect for the climate, vernacular, culture/context, topography, and the natural environment of the deep South. Significant climate and environmental factors have informed the H/S design philosophy. The culture of south Louisiana has also greatly influenced the design solutions by respecting the vernacular and context of the semi-rural communities. The constraints of clients of modest means are used as an opportunity to utilise ordinary materials and methods uniquely. Sustainability methods, such as using closely sourced materials indigenous to the sites and focusing on energy conservation through rigorous site analysis and building orientation, are evident in the designs. Several projects presented address sustainability through the adaptive reuse of historic structures. By utilising historic tax incentives, these examples maintain historic integrity of the façade while repurposing the interiors, bringing often overlooked and neglected cultural gems back into commerce. These timeless designs fit seamlessly into the existing architectural inventory of the deep South while utilising current technologies, materials, and construction methodologies to address the needs of the clients, users, and communities.

  • Oro Editions Hillier: Selected Works

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisHillier: Selected Works presents the design work of the husband-and-wife team of J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier during the last 25 years coupled with a brief graphic retrospective of the Hillier practice of architecture over 57 years of operation. Despite taking unconventional paths to architecture, both Hilliers enjoyed exhilarating careers growing the firm to 500 people and executing nearly 4,000 projects in 27 U.S. States and 34 Foreign Countries. The quality of the firm’s work has been honoured by over 350 design awards. The selected projects in this monograph are driven by strictly disciplined programming and then conceived by bringing into balance all the forces at work on a project: culture, climate, site, economics, market, and even politics. The resultant architecture is distinctive of its time, its place, and its client, rather than of a particular language or style. In 2008, Hillier Architecture, then one of the largest firms in the USA, merged with a foreign firm to create the 3rd largest architectural firm worldwide. Studio Hillier, the firm’s current iteration, was formed in 2012. More recently, NJIT’s College of Architecture and Design was renamed the J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design, celebrating the Hilliers’ commitment to providing more equitable access to design education.Table of ContentsForeword 6 Introduction 10 Projects 12 Autretemps 15 LVMH Tower 23 GlaxoSmithKline Global Headquarters 27 Howard University Stokes Library 35 Solebury Abbe Science Center 41 Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology 49 The Waxwood 57 House at Leeside Farm 63 Peddie School Annenberg Science Center 69 Duke NUS Singapore 77 Princeton Public Library 83 Synygy World Headquarters 89 New Jersey Medical School Cancer Center 97 Duke University French Science Center 103 Central Park North 111 Timeline 116 Quarry Street Two-Plex 125 Becton Dickinson Campus Center 131 Goucher College Athenaeum 141 Irving Convention Center 151 Urban Trifecta 159 Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center 167 Solebury Two-Plex 173 Copperwood 179 East River Science Park 185 Iona University Residence Hall 191 The Lawrenceville School Kirby Math and Science Center 197 Steeple View 205 Institute for Advanced Study Faculty Housing 213 River Road Residence 219 Nantucket Residence 227 Project Credits 236 Acknowledgments 242 About Studio Hillier 242 About the Hilliers 243 Photography Credits 246 Contributors 248

Book SynopsisA novel reading of the work of one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century. In this provocative intellectual biography, architectural historian Mark Wigley makes the surprising claim that the thinking behind modernist architect Konrad Wachsmann's legendary projects was dominated by the idea of television. Investigating the archives of one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century, Wigley scrutinizes Wachsmann's design, research, and teaching, closely reading a succession of unseen drawings, models, photographs, correspondence, publications, syllabi, reports, and manuscripts to argue that Wachsmann is an anti-architect—a student of some of the most influential designers of the 1920s who dedicated thirty-five post-Second World War years to the disappearance of architecture. Wachsmann turned architecture against itself. His hypnotic projects for a new kind of space were organized around the thought that television enables a different way of living together. While architecture is typically embarrassed by television, preferring to act as if it never happened, Wachsmann fully embraced it. He dissolved buildings into pulsating mirages that influenced the experimental avant-gardes of the 1960s and 1970s; but Wigley demonstrates that this work was even more extreme than the experiments it inspired. Wigley's forensic analysis of a career shows that Wachsmann developed one of the most compelling manifestos of what architecture would need to become in the age of ubiquitous electronics.
