David & Charles RACING COLOURS: MOTOR RACING COMPOSITIONS
Book Synopsis"In many respects it is a book unlike many others. It is an individual, as all good books should be. It is quirky, eclectic, eccentric even, but in a world intent on reproducing that which has already been regurgitated I personally felt the need for something a bit more idiosyncratic, I can only hope that you agree!" - Simon Owen A well known artist specialising in racing car subjects, the late Simon Owen's detailed, expertly executed work conveys the life, the vibrancy, the essence and passion of motorsports and racing cars, like no other. Simon's work is a visual feast for lovers of automotive art and motorsport. Over the last few years, Simon had worked on developing a series of stunningly detailed computer-generated digital images, focussing on individual racing cars and their liveries. Seventy-seven of these images have been compiled to create this extraordinary book, and each is presented with a relevant quote from a legend of the motor racing world. Along with these beautiful and unique artworks, this book represents a chance to gain a rare peek into the artist's working methods, revealing some of his developmental work and showing how the digital images were constructed.Trade ReviewNot only is there Owen's artwork on each subject but a lovely touch featuring a quote from one of the main protagonists involved with the vehicle in period. A charming book when first published in 2014, and it has lost non of its charm during the intervening four years. If you missed it first time round then this lovely paperback version should be grabbed. - tkc. Simon Owen's passion for racing - as well as his considerable artistic talent - is lauded in this compact Veloce paperback. It comprises some 200 pages of iconic liveries - all produced on computer, but far from lacking in feel. Each is accompanied by a quote relating to a driver, vehicle or key race - which makes it all rather charming. - Classic & Sports Car. It isn't a history book, although it covers a wide spectrum of racing history. The quotes are at once hooks to draw you in, as well as being thought provoking, bringing home the passion, exhilaration and grief in motor racing. The images show that although things change, some things still remain the same - across the 90 years of motor racing covered, all cars still have a race number, are still identified in the same way. The introduction says that they book is a reflection of the perception of the author, so as a memorial it has achieved what it intended. - www.silhouet.com. No run-of-the-mill motoring art book, this. The pictures on every alternate page of this compact publication are far from what you'd expect from a conventional racing book on racing cars. These are computer generated, full of close-up images of notable racing cars throughout the history of the sport. The majority are views looking down on the nose of each car, while some are side views of the bodywork and in the case of cars from an earlier era, heads-on views of their radiators. They're all the same size and in every case on the right-hand page, each view being accompanied, on the facing page, by quotes and anecdotes from drivers and personalities involved with each car. The images are so realistic that it's hard to believe they are computer generated. – Speedscene.

5b Personicx
Book Synopsis5b presentsPersonicx, an artist's book by Theo Christy. The publication focuses on a collection of A4 collages, prints, and drawings by the artist shown at 1:1 scalefacsimiles which maintain an uneasy tension between reality and the squashed surface of the screen.Across each page, characters are introduced, reworked, and recastimposed over the exhibition documentation, text and checklist, and beneath the twisting silhouette of a ballerina. These exploratory exercises were central to the development of a group of unboxing paintings included inWhen studying the world, the artist''s debut solo exhibition at Charity, Glasgow in 2023.A text by Ben Maxwell, titledThe Terrifying Space of the Picture, accompanies the publication.Dispossessed of our illusions, the planes of brown cease to describe the crisp surface of receding cardboard. Instead, they open out psychotically like arbitrary segments cropping the play of light over the churning surface of a vast pool of faecal sludge, incongruous highlights catching cracks in the ceilings of different caves, cropped by disgusted lines, or by the canvas edge, like the bottom left corner where a radial current threatens to spill out onto the wall below.'Theo Christy is an artist based in Glasgow. Christy is one half of Gallery Malmo, an ongoing collaboration with artist Gregor Horne. Recent exhibitions include:Charity at David Dale(with Gregor Horne), David Dale Gallery (2024),Would you be worried if one of these Scottish people ceased to exist?, Govan Project Space (2024) andSick of it, Charity (2023).Ben Maxwell is an artist living in London.

Taschen GmbH Dian Hanson’s: The History of Men’s Magazines.
Book SynopsisSexual revolution, civil rights, Flower Power, miniskirt, women’s liberation, The Pill, Black Panthers, hippies; all these words and phrases entered our language in the turbulent 1960s. The decade started as an extension of the domestic ’50s and ended with worldwide chaos as baby boomers reached sexual maturity. What a fun decade for men’s magazines. While Playboy’s world dominance grew, with France, Germany, England, and Italy producing “men’s lifestyle” titles, diversification spread in the U.S. The first big breast magazines debuted, with Fling, Gem and The Swinger; men’s adventure titles – with nudes – provided nostalgia for mid-life veterans; humor magazines hung on – barely – while hippie nudist titles exploited a legal loophole allowing them to show pubic hair. Italy finally joined the party with sexy fumetto photo comics and a hero named Supersex. Latin America clung to the old burlesque format, mired in religious restriction and political unrest. France retained post-war favorite Folies de Paris et de Hollywood for an older audience and launched elegant Playboy clone LUI for its sons. While the world donned miniskirts England did England, reveling in bloomer and petticoat fetishism with Spick and Span digests. But no one topped Germany, where Ulrike Meinhof edited Konkret in 1969, a magazine of sexual and political revolution, before forming Red Army Fraction with Andreas Baader to bomb, kidnap, and assassinate her way into domestic terror history. Volume 3 contains over 650 groovy covers and photos from Argentina, England, France, Germany, Italy, and The U.S., plus text.Trade Review“…approaches men’s magazines with a historical lens and also tracks the wider societal changes alongside their evolution.” * creativereview.co.uk *“[An] impressive six-volume collection…” * monocle.com *

Tate Publishing 100 Figures: The Unseen Art of Quentin Blake
Book SynopsisQuentin Blake's illustrations are instantly recognisable to millions of people around the world. A new exhibition to be held at London's House of Illustration will explore an unusual aspect of Blake's work, however, exhibiting for the first time 100 examples of his works of art. 100 Figures, will feature all of the 100 exhibited works - ranging from large-scale oil paintings to drawings and prints, created between the 1950s and today. Works included date back to his post-grad years in the 1950s when he struggled to make a living as an illustrator and took life-drawing classes at Chelsea School of Art. It was here that he first engaged with the human figure, but soon, having observed how the human body behaves, he found he was able to draw it from memory in any pose, working from his vivid imagination. 100 Figures will also offer the chance to catch a rare glimpse of early oil paintings by Blake - some painted on hardboard since he was unable to afford canvases at that time and painted using commercial house-painters' brushes.

In a striking interplay of poetry, lyric prose and drawings, Grass creates his final, major work of art.A moving farewell gift, a sensual, melancholy summation of a life fully lived.Trade ReviewAs subtle and as delicate as the many feathers depicted through its pages, Of All That Ends is a glorious gift, a final salute true to the singular creativity of the most human, and humane, of artists. * Irish Times *There is a lovely diversity to these pieces… His intelligence and intellectual engagement remain fiercely undimmed. -- Catherine Taylor * Financial Times *This beautiful, ironic and often funny final collage of asides and meditations sums up the fabulist’s genius. -- Eileen Battersby * Irish Times, Book of the Year *Autumnal, elegiac and tinged with a twilight charm -- Boyd Tonkin * The Arts Desk *Of All That Ends radiates a burst of his primitive energy and his subtle shrewdness, using words and pencil lines as a remedy, an antidote to the factual world that we objectify and iconise… Laced with black humour. -- Julian Evans * Daily Telegraph *
