Book SynopsisTravel with Luke Randolph as he meets the wackiest and most uninhibited collection of characters ever to cut a swath through the exclusive clubs and ancestral homes of the English and European upper classes. Here is a thoroughly modern, sometimes madcap, sometimes serious perspective on the social worlds of thoroughbred racing, bobsledding, foxhunting, and boar stalking, and a lifestyle that, though waning, continues to fascinate us. Grandeur of the Dooms transports the reader from the creamy shade of Buck's tent at Ascot to the search for a dissolute and dangerous Mexican jockey in a Texas border town; to St. Moritz, Switzerland, where suicidal young bloods run the Cresta on bobsleds; and to Vienna, where a young American triumphs against a five hundred pound boar with hatred and bloodlust in its eyes, only to discover that worse demons are yet to be faced. Here is a world where firelight reflects off polished brass, the Viennese snow squeaks underfoot, and skeet is shot in the drawing room.

Book SynopsisCharley Waterman was a true Renaissance sportsman. He kept his interests broad, his knowledge deep yet playful. This book is no exception. This collection of stories from his long and varied life in the great outdoors features flyfishing on western creeks, on such storied trout streams as the Letort, and on the Florida flats; chasing sage grouse in Montana, ptarmigan in Alaska, and quail in Mexico, all behind his beloved bird dogs; and Waterman's philosophical scrutinies of tradition and the mysticism behind shotgunning, rounded out with tales of runaway boat trailers and camping in the Everglades. Written in Waterman's usual humor and understatement, this volume is the crowning achievement of his writing career.

Book Synopsis"Truly fine guns are as much works of art as poems, novels, or paintings," writes acclaimed outdoor writer Michael McIntosh in this classic book. And who better to guide us through the world of fine guns than McIntosh. Here, he captured the whole gun--the gun as a combination of form, fit, and function. Divided into two sections, the first on the art of guns and gunmaking, and the last on the art of shooting, this book is, as McIntosh himself says, "a celebration of the gun." Indeed, it's a celebration no lover of fine double guns should miss.

Book SynopsisFoxhunting with Meadow Brook on Long Island, New York, was always about more than the fox, the hounds, or the horses. Meadow Brook was about its people—some powerful, some idle, many wealthy—and their shared joy in galloping across beautiful country, only minutes outside New York City. Doomed from its 1881 conception, the Meadow Brook hunt managed to survive for ninety years in spite of poor scenting, sandy soil, angry farmers, quirky millionaires, trolleys, trains, automobiles, and airplanes. Foxhunting with Meadow Brook tells the story of the people who, for almost a century, rode behind the Meadow Brook hounds.Trade ReviewWell researched and accurate, this book is a veritable who's who of American foxhunting. Ms.Tabler details the leading characters, sportsmen and women of Long Island society, the good and the bad, but all authentic. The bonus is this book is fun and informative, a good read for anyone interested in New York City and sporting life in general. Many of the Meadow Brook members were accomplished in yachting, horse racing, polo, car racing, golf, etc., all over the world. An enjoyable gallop through one hundred years from 1871 to 1971, the fascinating stories kept me turning the pages. -- Penny Denegre, MFH Middleburg HoundsFoxhunting with Meadow Brook is an important book for all who are interested in the evolution of leisure activities and the important role that fox hunting played in the later part of the 19th Century....[It] provides a detailed history of the Meadow Brook Hounds from our founding in 1881 to the end of the Hunt in 1971. -- Rod Berens, Steward, Meadow Brook Club (1985-present)

Derrydale Press The Great Hound Match of 1905: Alexander Henry

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn November 1905, the peak of foxhunting season across the Midlands of England and up and down the east coast of North America, two tiny towns in Virginia’s Piedmont, poor and nearly forgotten after the Civil War and a recent depression, saw the coming of illustrious and wealthy foxhunters to raise their hopes. There was to be a contest, a Great Hound Match, between two packs of foxhounds, one English and one American. The English hounds carried, on their great stout forearms and deep chests, the monumental weight of centuries of foxhunting in England and were expected to make their hound dog ancestors proud of their New World conquest. The American hounds were expected to show those stodgy old Brits how it was done over here—with spunk and intuition, individuality, drive, and nerve. This book, the story of an audatious contest between men cut from very different cloth and their hounds carved from very different stock, chronicles a metaphorical battle in America’s coming of age—her psychic independence from Britain’s lingering shroud at the turn of the 20th century.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFrom world renowned experts in hunting accident investigation comes an invaluable collection of cases—true, detailed, and sometimes chilling accounts of death and injury on the hunt. Covering incidents of all kinds and set in locations across the country, these cases not only read like impressive "crime scene investigations" but they also provide hard-learned lessons in hunter safety. A must-read for hunters and anyone fascinated by forensics.Trade Review“This is an absolutely fascinating look at actual hunting accidents—their cause, consequences, and the investigations that follow. Blood on the Leaves could easily be the basis for a dozen novels or a TV series. Well written, informative, and enlightening, it should be required reading for anyone who applies for a hunting license—or anyone who has had their license revoked. Pack this book with your ammo.” —Nelson DeMille, New York Times bestselling author of Radiant Angel“Staging is only limited by the offender’s imagination among other things. Therefore, it is very important to learn about all types of staging behaviors including those that might be specific to hunting-related incidents. This unique book allows us to do just that.” —Dr. Laura Pettler, author of Crime Scene Staging Dynamics in Homicide Cases“Incredibly fascinating, informative, and intriguing. This is a must-read for the hunter, game warden, hunter safety administrator, hunter education instructor, or crime scene investigator in any field. The authors of Blood on the Leaves are the foremost experts in this highly specialized science of investigating hunting incidents. They are passionate about keeping hunters safe, drawing out the nuances of potential crime scenes, comforting all victims, supporting their colleagues through the worst of times, and enforcing the laws. The chapters are captivating stories drawn from personal experience and their real, very real, field investigations of hunters. Some incidents result in serious injury and others death. Their writing style has the reader knowing next to nothing at the start, following in their footsteps searching for and documenting evidence to painstakingly build each case. The best investigator allows the scene to speak for itself, for that is the only way to know what actually happened so that justice will serve victim and all others involved.” —Dr. Charles Bruckerhoff, Hunter Education Coordinator, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection“The stories in this book explore and teach the on-the-ground reality of hunting accidents. Blood on the Leaves lifts the reader to a new level of awareness. It does so through captivating storytelling. In the process the reader learns how minor departures from the safety code of the hunt have unleashed devastating consequences on both victim and shooter.” — Jim Posewitz, founder of Orion—The Hunter’s Institute, and author of Beyond Fair Chase'Like me, you probably think you are a very safe hunter. But I promise you, this book will convince you that accidents can happen to even the safest of hunters. We are only a sudden stumble or a misplaced shot away from tragedy. This book is particularly appropriate for new hunters but even for those of us who have been hunting for decades, it offers sobering stories that will assure that we all hunt more safely this fall. Buy this book, read it, and share it with your hunting buddies.' * The Maine Sportsman *

  • On Hunting

    St Augustine's Press On Hunting

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTo say that On Hunting is a book on fox hunting is like saying that Moby-Dick is a whaling yarn. Modern people are as given to loving, fearing, fleeing, and pursuing other species as were their hunter-gatherer forebears. And in fox hunting, they join together with their most ancient friends among the animals, to pursue an ancient enemy. The feelings stirred by hunting are explored by Scruton, in a book that is both illuminating and deeply personal. Drawing on his own experiences of hunting and offering a delightful portrait of the people and animals who take part in it, Scruton introduces the reader to the mysteries of country life. His book is a plea for tolerance toward a sport in which the love of animals prevails over the pursuit of them, and in which Nature herself is the center of the drama. Among the most dramatic and ironic discoveries that On Hunting offers the typical American reader is that hunting is about a love and respect for animals, rather than a blood-thirsty hatred of them, and that the sport, far from being limited to an upper-class, old-monied aristocracy, is really one promoting an egalitarian meritocracy.

Book SynopsisRecently anointed "the master of the short outdoor essay" by no less than Gray's Sporting Journal, Jack Kulpa picks up where his award-winning book True North leaves off, somewhere in the Wisconsin woods where "the calling is a simple and uncomplicated thing; but like the mists of a brooding bog it can also be a riddle—cryptic deep, and filled with mystery." This new collection, drawn from work that appeared in such magazines as Field and Stream, Sports Afield, and Sporting Classics, contains thirty-two essays organized into four parts: "Lakes and Streams;" "Forests and Fields;" "Tail Feathers and Backlash;" and "Home from the Hill." While the essays address a variety of topics, each is inspired by what the author refers to as "the silent places where we have heard the wild calling."Trade ReviewPeople who want to learn how to troll for dolphin or catch bigger kingfish won't get that here. • The Goshawk

The New York Review of Books, Inc The Goshawk

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe predecessor to Helen Macdonald’s H is for Hawk, T. H. White’s nature writing classic, The Goshawk, asks the age-old question: what is it that binds human beings to other animals? White, the author of The Once and Future King and Mistress Masham’s Repose, was a young writer who found himself rifling through old handbooks of falconry. A particular sentence—“the bird reverted to a feral state”—seized his imagination, and, White later wrote, “A longing came to my mind that I should be able to do this myself. The word ‘feral’ has a kind of magical potency which allied itself to two other words, ‘ferocious’ and ‘free.’” Immediately, White wrote to Germany to acquire a young goshawk. Gos, as White named the bird, was ferocious and Gos was free, and White had no idea how to break him in beyond the ancient (and, though he did not know it, long superseded) practice of depriving him of sleep, which meant that he, White, also went without rest. Slowly man and bird entered a state of delirium and intoxication, of attraction and repulsion that looks very much like love. White kept a daybook describing his volatile relationship with Gos—at once a tale of obsession, a comedy of errors, and a hymn to the hawk. It was this that became The Goshawk, one of modern literature’s most memorable and surprising encounters with the wilderness—as it exists both within us and without.

Rowman & Littlefield Tattered Autumn Sky: Bird Hunting In The

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn these fine essays, Tom Davis lyrically reflects on gundogs and gamebirds; on the prairies, fields, and woodlands where they meet; on the delights of upland bird hunting and the dilemmas posed by the summons of blood. Far more literary than most chronicles of the sporting experience, his work stands squarely in the tradition of outdoor writing represented by such greats as Aldo Leopold, Gordon MacQuarrie, Gene Hill, and Robert F. Jones. More than recounting the highlights of a sporting life, these twenty-five essays, spanning two decades, act as a finely etched memoir. We come to know the bird dogs that have been central to Davis's life, including the irrepressible Maggie in "Blood," an endearing yet doomed English setter pup with the distinct aroma of a chicken. We meet family and friends, observe a marriage and its dissolution, and join in the resumption of life and love. With Davis, we are swallowed up by the immense prairies of Nebraska and South Dakota; awed by the late afternoon light in the Wisconsin northwoods; and moved by the devotion of an old dog on point. Through Davis's deft pen, we, too, are bone weary at the end of a long day afield, and we, too, feel the elemental connection a hunter has to wild birds and the unspoiled places they inhabit.Trade Review"An unsparing yet loving look at what it means to be a bird hunter in North America today. Mr. Davis's book is about countrysides, birds, rural people, dogs, beauty, death: the full complexity of the hunting life."--Donald McCaig, author of Nop's Trials "You can sense the love Tom Davis entertains for his dogs and his dedication to nature on every page."--Guy de la Valdene, author of A Handful of Feathers "Tom writes brilliantly and with poignance....He has a deeper, warmer understanding of pointing dogs and upland bird hunting than any writer I've read. --Robert F. De la Valdène's description of the Norman forests and wildlife are rich and graceful, and he expertly captures the shades of difference between the privileged life of the aristocracy, town life and Vincent's sheltered existence."--Publishers Weekly"Guy de la Valdène's Red Stag is beautifully written; it is both a fine sporting novel and literature."--Jim Harrison"Red Stag is a gripping, deeply felt story embedded in a cherished and closely observed world still ruled by the laws of nature."--Tom McGuane"A highly appealing first novel. The novel's pleasures derive largely from de la Valdène's ability to bring an idyllic rural community convincingly to life. De la Valdène has also peopled the novel with a variety of vividly drawn characters. Part love story, part coming-of-age adventure, and part pastoral, this offers many old-fashioned pleasures--including a certain rustic, romantic charm. Highly recommended."--Library Journal "This is an absolutely beautiful book, whose intelligence and wit are testaments to the grandest storytelling. Reading Red Stag is like walking outside on the most glorious October afternoon of your life--you are moved by grandeur. The writing in this book lights up like a cathedral in your head. Guy de la Valdène is a masterful writer."--Doug Stanton, author of In Harm's Way "Red Stag is one of the best novels I have read in years: a story set in the beautifully evoked deep countryside of Normandy, a landscape that surrounds the characters the way a river does a trout."--Field & Stream "Red Stag is a lovely novel that offers an intimate glimpse into a rarified, forgotten world. This book informs the reader what kind of performance to look for in optics, depending on where they’re going and what they’re hunting. Book SynopsisThe whitetailed deer is North America's most sought after big game animal, and its numbers have skyrocketed in recent years. Yet it remains one of our wariest and most elusive quarries. In Pro Tactics: Whitetail Hunting, outdoor writer and Maine guide Bob Humphrey shares his knowledge and experience, as well as the wisdom of others he's shared the deer woods with over several decades of chasing the king of North American big game. He covers everything from basic biology to the latest technology and how to use that information for a more successful and enjoyable hunt. This expertly written book provides advice on selecting the right equipment, as well as scouting and hunting, whether on foot or in a stand, with virtually any legal weapon. More important, readers will gain a much greater understanding of the whitetail's behavior and how to modify and adapt basic techniques to fit particular situations. The result is a comprehensive and contemporary course on deer hunting with something for everyone from the rank amateur to the grizzled veteran.

Book SynopsisFor most of us, our knowledge of slings and slingstones begins and ends with the biblical tale of David slaying Goliath. Scholars and archaeologists have told us that slings like the one David employed were common in the Old World, used not just for shepherd boys to kill giants but for protecting herds, hunting, and combat. However, few scholars have addressed the function slings have occupied outside of Eurasian civilizations, especially their use in Oceania and the Americas. In this astounding new archaeological survey, authors Robert York and Gigi York examine the history of Oceania and the Americas to unveil the significant role slings and slingstones played in developing societies. They present new evidence that suggests that unlike David who plucked rounded pebbles from a stream, inhabitants of the Pacific Islands deliberately fashioned sling missiles out of coral, stone, and clay into uniquely deadly shapes. They also show that the use of slings in the Americas was more pervasive and inclined to variability than previously recognised.Well documented, bountifully illustrated, and thoroughly researched, Slings and Slingstones is sure to engage readers interested in expanding their knowledge of the past. It is an essential reference for archaeologists, historians, and students of the history of arms and weaponry.

Book SynopsisThis third installment in the popular series of practical books about guns and shooting is aimed at women of all ages—the fastest-growing segment of the sport—and it couldn’t come at a better time. America and firearms literally grew up together, but today guns are often simply linked to crime and violence; gun control has become a polarizing political issue; and misinformation about firearms is spreading. Now three experts have tackled the subject in a series of books that explores the realities of guns and shooting and sets the record straight about some common misconceptions. On the heels of The Gun Book for Boys and The Gun Book for Parents, The Gun Book for Girls is for girls (and women) interested in guns and shooting but who have little or no background in firearms. Through example and anecdote, the book emphasizes safety and proper usage, and it defines terms and provides hands-on advice about using and maintaining guns. It also covers firearms, shooting methods, clothing and accessories for women, profiles females who shoot and who work in the gun trade, and discusses the issues around guns for self-defense (a topic of special interest to women). Like the other two titles, this book is non-political and written in an easy-to-understand conversational tone. Each book is thoroughly illustrated, and content is presented in easily managed portions that can be read in series or singly, all backed up with an index. Trade ReviewThe Gun Book for Girls is for girls and women interested in guns and shooting but who have no background in firearms and is expanded over the previous editions. Book SynopsisMaine has a long and rich history of involvement with outdoorsmen and women. The Great North Woods have long been the destination of choice for residents and visitors alike looking to bag a trophy buck or land a record brook trout. And there have always been sporting camps to cater to the "sports" and guide them on their excursions. However, trends come and go and the outdoor sports of hunting and fishing have had decreasing numbers of participants. As fewer and fewer people have sought game in the north woods, the sporting camps have had to adapt in order to survive. Now people head to the wilderness for biking, hiking, bird watching, kayaking, or simply to experience the tranquility. And Maine sporting camps have met the challenge, offering a wide array of services, from animal and bird watching excursions to wild flower and native plant guided walks. And the services have changed too. Today camps offer everything from gourmet meals and the finest amenities to unheated, unplumbed cabins to give you the true wilderness experience. In this guide, George Smith profiles the 50 or so sporting camps that are still in operation in Maine. He includes interviews with the staff and owners and gives his own experiences staying at each camp. Each entry also includes pertinent information on amenities, services offered, seasons and times of operation, as well as directions. If you're looking to get away from it all in Maine, this guide will help you find the road less traveled.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSafari 101 is written for the hunter that has always considered Africa out of reach, someone who has a spark of desire just waiting to be fanned into a flame. The myths of being “too expensive” and “too difficult” are firmly entrenched in many hunters’ minds. Safari 101 has forty-six hints dispersed throughout 11 chapters and proves these myths false. Personal stories are used to illustrate the value of each hint and to make each one easy to remember. When Brown took his first Safari, he was forced to rely on word of mouth for information, as all of the books he found were for photo Safaris. This book takes Brown's experiences, and what he learned from professional hunters and outfitters, and puts the information in a logical progression that is entertaining as well as informative. The book will help fan the spark into a flame.Trade Review"Your book has been a great pleasure to read and I cannot thank you enough for writing this book. It helped turn that spark into a flame and I cannot wait to book a hunt.I have contacted Mr. Veldsman and he was extremely quick on the return e-mail.I respect your take on the African game and I know that I want to take a zebra, blue wildebeest, and a kudu, but I can't decide on an eland or a waterbuck. Any recommendations?I think I will go through Mr. Veldsman for the hunt because of the great experiences I've read about in your book."-Dale R."Thanks for the Safari 101 book. This is a much needed book, I have already read more then half of it and have learned a great amount of new information about planning my safari. I will be going in 2013. Thanks again for the book."-Larry Y."Just back from my first trip to Africa. Your book was very helpful in the planning and spot on. As a new graduate of Safari 101, I’m looking forward to Safari 201, otherwise known as 'How To Pay For Your Second African Hunting Safari'. Keep up the good work.“ -R. NunezCalifornia"Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me. I received your book the same day we spoke. Read it this weekend. On one hand I was happy to see that I had figured out a few things before speaking with you and reading the book but on the other hand I wish I would have had it sooner as it would of saved me a boat load of time. It’s packed with a lot of good tips. It is a great resource which I think any first timer should have. For that matter I’m keeping it handy for trip 2, 3 and 4. (fingers crossed) Thanks again, and I hope to be in contact upon getting back from hunting with Shona. On that same note, best of luck on your trip."-Rick N."Extremely well done, great information and written in a form that's fun to read. GREAT COMBINATION and sometimes hard to pull off! I particularly liked your section about "tipping", something that is seldom covered in other books on going to Africa or for that matter other hunts. As mentioned it's extremely well written, contains a BUNCH of good information and written where it's fun to read. Also appreciated your comments on drinking while in camp... I too enjoy "sundowners" but I've seen some who have carried it too far and didn't enjoy the next morning...Thanks for a great book!"-Larry Weishuhn, Host of the TV show “A Hunters life with Larry Weishuhn" "After reading your book I felt like I had made a good friend. This book was especially helpful as my wife wants to accompany me on the trip. We are interested in touring in addition to the hunt. My wife is a non- hunter, but supports me in my love of the outdoors. My concern is that I wanted this trip to be equally enjoyable for her as I expect it to be for me. Your book eased my concern about her having an outstanding experience on the trip. A couple of other things that I felt I had picked up from your book is the need to: 1. have a plan [whether for gear to take, where you want to tour, and what animals you would like to harvest], 2.be flexible, 3.preserve the experience in a journal and by camera, 4. prepare by spending time on the firing range, 5. ask plenty of questions when planning the trip. Your book was very personable and is an easy read. I would recommend this book to anyone planning a first trip to Africa. Your book was a wealth of information to me."-J. McGregor David: Just a quick note to thank you for the wonderful book on plains and dangerous game hunting in Namibia and Zimbabwe. You did an outstanding job and have become an authority on the subject. I especially liked the anecdotal stories and the way the book flowed as a result. Great job and thanks again. The book will be a valuable part of my hunting library!-D. Smith, First Vice President Financial Advisor
