New York University Press The Landmarks of New York
Book SynopsisAs the definitive resource on the architectural history of New York City, The Landmarks of New York documents and illustrates the 1,352 individual landmarks and 135 historic districts that have been accorded landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission since its establishment in 1965. Arranged chronologically by date of construction, the book offers a sequential overview of the city's architectural history and richness, presenting a broad range of styles and building types: colonial farmhouses, Gilded Age mansions, churches, schools, libraries, museums, and the great twentieth-century skyscrapers that are recognized throughout the world. That so many of these structures have endured is due, in large measure, to the efforts of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and hundreds of private sector preservation organizations, large and small. Since the commission was established, New York City has become the leader of the preservation movement in the Trade Review"A spectacular book.Diamonstein-Spielvogel has proven that New York City cares deeply about its past and its connections to the present and future." * Gotham Magazine *"To read this book from cover to cover is to reread the past 400 years of New York history.Highly recommended." * Library Journal *

Fordham University Press Postindustrial DIY: Recovering American Rust Belt
Book SynopsisChronicles grassroots efforts to recover, rebuild, and enjoy architecturally iconic but economically obsolete places in the American Rust Belt. A pioneering Detroit automobile factory. A legendary iron mill at the edge of Pittsburgh. A campus of concrete grain elevators in Buffalo. Two monumental train stations, one in Buffalo, the other in Detroit. These once-noble sites have since fallen from their towering grace. As local elected leaders did everything they could to destroy what was left of these places, citizens saw beauty and utility in these industrial ruins and felt compelled to act. Postindustrial DIY tells their stories. The culmination of more than a dozen years of on-the-ground investigation, ethnography, and historical analysis, author and urbanist Daniel Campo immerses the reader in this postindustrial landscape, weaving the perspectives of dozens of DIY protagonists as well as architects, planners, and preservationists. Working without capital, expertise, and sometimes permission in a milieu dominated by powerful political and economic interests, these do-it-yourself actors are driven by passion and a sense of civic duty rather than by profit or political expediency. They have craftily remade these sites into collective preservation projects and democratic grounds for arts and culture, environmental engagement, regional celebrations, itinerant play, and in-the-moment constructions. Their projects are generating excitement about the prospect of Rust Belt life, even as they often remain invisible to the uninformed passerby and fall short of professional preservation or environmental reclamation standards. Demonstrating that there is no such thing as a site that is “too far gone” to save or reuse, Postindustrial DIY is rich with case studies that demonstrate how great architecture is not simply for the elites or the wealthy. The citizen preservationists and urbanists described in this book offer looser, more playful, and often more publicly satisfying alternatives to the development practices that have transformed iconic sites into expensive real estate or a clean slate for the next profitable endeavor. Transcending the disciplinary boundaries of architecture, historic preservation, city planning, and landscape architecture, Postindustrial DIY suggests new ways to engage, adapt, and preserve architecturally compelling sites and bottom-up strategies for Rust Belt revival.Table of ContentsPrologue: A Postindustrial View from the Northeast Corridor | 3 1. Bodleian Library Town: Prints and Drawings of Britain Before 1800
Book SynopsisProvincial towns in Britain grew in size and importance in the eighteenth century. Ports such as Glasgow and Liverpool greatly expanded, while industrial centres such as Birmingham and Manchester flourished. Market towns outside London developed as commercial centres or as destinations offering spa treatments as in Bath, horse racing in Newmarket or naval services in Portsmouth. Containing over 100 images of towns in England, Wales and Scotland, this book draws on the extensive Gough collection in the Bodleian Library. Contemporary prints and drawings provide a powerful visual record of the development of the town in this period, and finely drawn prospects and maps – made with greater accuracy than ever before – reveal their early development. This book also includes perceptive observations from the journals and letters of collector Richard Gough (1735–1809), who travelled throughout the country on the cusp of the industrial age.Trade Review“A treasure trove of a book and an excellent starting point for anyone seeking to understand what British towns in the eighteenth century looked like.” * Peter Borsay, Aberystwyth University *

Rizzoli All the Buildings in London
Book SynopsisThe follow-up to the hugely popular All the Buildings in New York, this is a charmingly illustrated journey through London, one building at a time. All the Buildings in London is a love letter to London, told through James Gulliver Hancock’s unique and charming drawings of the city’s diverse architectural styles and streetscapes. Hancock’s offbeat drawing style gives a sense of whimsical and delightful fun to his illustrations, while perfectly capturing each building’s architectural details. This unusual combination of the artistic and the technical presents London’s cityscape like never before. The book includes such beloved iconic buildings as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Buckingham Palace; the latest modern landmarks, such as the Shard and the London Eye; celebrated cultural institutions, such as the British Museum and Tate Modern; and other notable attractions, such as Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, as well as the bridges and Trade Review"Hancock’s illustrations are really pleasing to the eye, deftly capturing various iconic buildings around the city, and often supplying fun trivia tidbits alongside. It’s a really enjoyable way to discover or revisit iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the Shard, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and of course, Big Ben."-TYPO-GRAPHICAL.COM"For those who love to walk or bike, this book is a carry-along delight. Turn off Google Maps. Get lost in the book. Get found in the London you’ve never seen before. Hancock’s quirky, humorous, and artful travelogue is a journey through an illustrator’s wonderfully whacky mind." -NeenahPaperBlog.comI love the simple and stylized look that James has used for his drawings. . . [All the Buildings in London] is a wonderful book for sketchbook lovers. I hope to see more in the future."-ParkaBlogs.com"Hancock’s previous illustrative love letter to New York was so popular that the Australian artist elected to take his show across the pond — part Roald Dahl whimsy, part architectural study, Hancock’s offbeat style masterfully captures everything from Buckingham Palace to the London Eye. Impossible not to smile while reading." —Inside Hook

Prestel Libraries: Candida Höfer
Book SynopsisThis striking book shows the world's most beautiful libraries through Candida Höfer's mesmerizing photographs. No one photographs spaces quite like Candida Höfer and no one has captured better the majesty, stillness, and eloquence of libraries. Traveling around the world, Höfer shows the exquisite beauty to be found in order, repetition, and form--rows of books, lines of desks, soaring shelves, and even stacks of paper create patterns that are both hypnotic and soothing. Photographed with a large-format camera and a small aperture, these razor-sharp images of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Escorial in Spain, Villa Medici in Rome, the Hamburg University library, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris, and the Museo Archeologico in Madrid, to name a few, communicate more than just the superb architecture. Glowing with subtle color and natural light, Höfer's photographs, while devoid of people, shimmer with life and remind us again and again that libraries are more than just repositories for books. Umberto Eco's essay about his own attachment to libraries is the perfect introduction to an otherwise wordless, but sublimely reverent journey.Trade Review“…each large, full-page image compels its viewer to pause and simply stare. Each library is so different, and yet we cannot help but be drawn to them.”—Fine Books & Collections Magazine
