Book SynopsisAt face value, this book is about medicine in Cambodia over the last hundred years. At the same time, however, by using 'medicine' (in the sense of ideas, practices and institutions relating to health and illness) as a prism through which to view colonial and post-colonial Cambodian society more generally, it offers an historical and contemporary anthropology of the nation of Cambodia. Rich in ethnographic detail derived from both contemporary anthropological fieldwork and colonial archival material, the study is an account of the simultaneous presence in Cambodia of two medical traditions: the modern, biomedical one first introduced by the French colonial power at the turn of the twentieth century, and the indigenous Khmer health cosmology. In their reliance on one or the other of the two traditions, to a large extent the Khmer people have been concerned to find efficient medical treatment that also adheres to social norms (not least the emphasis on the morality of social relations). This concern is also evident in the prevailing medical pluralism in Cambodia today. The authors trace the interaction (and lack thereof) between these two traditions from the French colonial period via the political upheavals of the 1970s through to the present day. The result is more than a medical anthropology; this is a key text that also makes a significant contribution to the anthropological study of Cambodian society at large and will be an important resource for development planners and aid workers in medical and related fields.Trade Review'This is a compelling, persuasive study of the indigenizationA" of global bio-political knowledge in Cambodia from colonial to modern times. Book SynopsisSoutheast Asia is regarded as one of the birthplaces of modern humans. Recent genetic evidence shows that it was probably the entry point of modern humans from Africa into East Asia and Oceania. With the help of new markers X mostly from the Y-chromosome and mtDNA X several recent efforts have been made to study the populations of Southeast Asia, which have been somewhat neglected in the past.A new picture of the origin and migrations of modern humans in this region is quickly emerging. In this book, the leading researchers in the studies of Southeast Asian, East Asian, and Oceanian populations present the most up-to-date results of their research.Table of ContentsPrehistory of human populations: archaelogical, linguistic and paleontological perspectives - prehistory, language and human biology - is there a consensus in East and Southeast Asia?, C.F.W. Book SynopsisThis is the story of a professor of Medical Sociology, diagnosed with colon cancer. He undergoes the appropriate medical treatment. Passing through that trajectory, he realizes that things happen that he never read about in the professional literature. During his illness and rehabilitation he scribbles down notes about what is happening to him, what he is observing and what things do not tally with his knowledge of the sociological literature. This continuous connection of personal experience with academic literature is what makes this book such a powerful account of the ‘everyday’ life of a sick person. Recommended to teachers and students in the field of social health research; to everyone who works in health care, professionals as well as volunteers; and to men and women who themselves are experiencing a serious illness.Table of ContentsForeword.- Preface.- 1. • Medical Stigmata: Race, Medicine, and the Pursuit of Theological Liberation

Springer Verlag, Singapore Medical Stigmata: Race, Medicine, and the Pursuit of Theological Liberation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book observes the idea of race as a false representation for the cause of disease. Race-based medicine, an emerging field in pharmacology, aims to create a specialty market based on racial groups. Within this market, the drug BiDil set a precedent in this area of medicine targeting African Americans as its first racial group. Consequently, selecting African Americans as a “starter group” led to ethical questions regarding the motive behind race-based medicine within the context of the larger treatment of blacks in American medical history. This book therefore links medicine and American eugenics, examines race-based medicine’s influence on the perception of the black body, traces the influence of BiDil’s approval on the resurgence of race-based medicine, and assesses the black church’s response to race-based medicine using black liberation theology as a means to social justice.Trade Review“Medical Stigmata encourages readers to apply similar hermeneutics to clinical contexts, using scripture to challenge the determinist narratives that pervade medicine and its adjacent industries.” (Audrey Farley, Marginalia, marginalia.lareviewofbooks.org, October 18, 2019)Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction.- Chapter 2 Race-Based Medicine.- Chapter 3 Maleficence toward the Minority Patient.- Chapter 4 Research, Race, and Profit.- Chapter 5 Black Theology and Reconciliation.- Chapter 6 Conclusion.- Bibliography.

Book SynopsisThis book describes how malaria both frustrates and facilitates life for Indigenous Pälawan communities living in the forested foothills of the municipality of Bataraza on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. Tracing the arc of malaria on the archipelago from colonial encounters to the present day, it examines the ways in which malaria parasites have become entangled in contemporary lives. It uniquely explores the experiences of local government leaders working towards sustainably developing this last ecological frontier, health workers trying to meet international targets to eliminate malaria, and Pälawan people trying to keep their bodies, social relations and the cosmos in careful balance. In exquisite detail, Dr Dalia Iskander shows how malaria emerged from, and was intrinsic to, a whole host of strategically-orientated social practices that were enacted in as well as around the disease’s name, as people worked day-to-day to gain power in different guises in different arenas.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction.- Chapter 2 Practices of Oppression.- Chapter 3 Practices of Progress.- Chapter 4 Practices of Development.- Chapter 5 Practices of Professionalization.- Chapter 6 Practices of Equilibrium.- Chapter 7 Conclusion.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Ethnomedicine and Tribal Healing Practices in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines various aspects of ethnomedicine and tribal healing practices, including its importance for inclusion and integration from a health systems perspective. Tribal healing practices is an under-studied component in healthcare system, health policy and health systems research. The book consists of original research papers based on empirical studies done by anthropologists, sociologists, public health practitioners and research scientists in various parts of India. It discusses issues of non-codified folk healing, with a focus on the therapeutic ideas and practices of tribal communities, located in anthropological theory and methods. It has a balance of empirical papers, review and theoretical papers, not only explaining ‘what is inside the healing practices’ but also touching upon the question of ‘why’ and delving into ‘what should be’ looking into the possibility to apply it for a larger good i.e., health care for all. This book discusses several important issues related to legitimacy, evidence and efficacy, recognition, certification and integration, protection and preservation, bio-piracy and bioprospecting, benefit sharing and intellectual property rights, sustainable use of medicinal herbs and conservation of nature and natural resources, biodiversity and possibilities of mainstreaming tribal healing. It is of interest to students and researchers from medical anthropology, medical sociology, cultural geography, liberal studies, tribal studies, ecology, sustainability and development and public health.Table of ContentsIntroduction Sunita Reddy, Nemthianngai Guite, Bamdev Subedi Section 1: Ethnomedicine and Public Health Perspective in Traditional Medicine 2. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAs part of the boom in biotechnology, particularly in tissue engineering, primary human cell culture has become a major pillar in academic research and the biopharmaceutical industry. Obtaining a viable culture from a tissue sample and maintaining it for experimental, diagnostic or therapeutic purposes can be quite a challenge. Based on laboratory protocols and practical experience from many years of primary cell culture, this manual presents the basic steps necessary for culturing primary human cells.Written by students for students, the manual serves well as a practical guide to primary human cell culture. The authors have left much space for notes and the design of the manual is such that it can be continuously upgraded and extended. The content of this manual is by no means exhaustive. Protocols for specific cell types, out of over 200 different cell types in the human body, were selected from major tissue groupings in the body. They should serve as a foundation for individual researchers to experiment, explore, and establish niche protocols for their specific needs. Inspired by the practical clinical checklists available to residents and trainees in medicine, the authors have chosen a compact physical format that can fit into the pocket of a lab coat.Table of ContentsPrinciples of Biosafety; Introduction to the Cell Culture Laboratory; Protocols for Human Culture; Reagents and Techniques for Cell Culture

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Biological Shape Analysis - Proceedings Of The

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis proceedings volume describes the current state of research dealing with biological shape analysis. The quantitative analysis of the shape of biological organisms represents a challenge that has now seen breakthroughs with new methodologies such as elliptical Fourier analysis, quantitative trait loci analysis (QTLs), thin plate splines, etc. The volume also illustrates the diversity of disciplines that are actively involved in the characterization and analysis of the biological shape. Some of the papers deal with the need to relate the underlying genome responsible for the actual observed characteristics of form. Moreover, many of the papers focus on the relationship of the shape to the processes that determine the biological form, an issue of major continuing concern in biology. This volume brings together for the second time practitioners from a variety of disciplines who have been concerned with the necessity of applying new methods to the analysis of biological shape. Previous methodologies based on the conventional metrical approach (distances, angles and ratios), have not been able to adequately capture — in quantitative terms — the subtleties and complexities of biological form due to its irregularity. This volume represents an initial attempt to quantitatively characterize the biological form in both two- and three-dimensions, as it is actually perceived. There is no volume available that deals with the subject matter of these Proceedings. The papers represent, as in the first proceedings, a unique look at: (1) new methodologies developed and used quantitatively describe the biological form; (2) the need to relate the observed biological shape to the underlying processes that determine the shape; and (3) the tremendous diversity of disciplines actively involved in the characterization and analysis of biological shapes. These range from physical anthropology, anatomy, genetics, botany, entomology, forensics, to applied mathematics, etc.Table of ContentsAgricultural Crop Selection: Can Machine Vision Substitute for Plant Breeders' Eye? All this points to a need for proper scientific and medical information on this topic — not soft 'politically correct' sociology. This book provides the hard facts on human similarities and differences, their causes and effects on people. It covers the whole range from normal to extreme human types, and presents — for the first time — much of the author's 25 years of original research on the subject. It can also act as a family medical guide to aspects of human function, structure and disease. It covers many human topics in a humane and understandable fashion, providing much material for information and discussion. It can be used as a handbook or textbook on human diversity, but is mainly popular science for the general public. A special feature of this book is the 140 colour photos that illustrate the diversity of human life, nearly all taken by the author himself.Given the vast nature of the subject, the book seamlessly integrates relevant data from multiple disciplines including medicine, biology, anthropology, genetics, psychology, evolution, languages, sociology, history and geography. Even controversial subjects such as race, class and culture are tackled head-on with no-nonsense scientific rigour.

Book SynopsisHave you ever wondered what our body is made up of and what it looks like under a microscope? How does our body work and how can we protect it against dangerous invaders? Our body is made up of four main types of tissues and 200 different types of cells organized into groups, working together, forming the organs and systems of our body. A pathologist, like me, is a doctor who studies tissues and cells under a microscope and has the essential knowledge to identi-fy and describe their diseases. This work is a long, lonely, scientific journey, where hundreds of his-tological images alternate daily in front of our eyes like scenes from a silent movie. This micro-scopic, lonely journey becomes magical when cells inadvertently form images of beauty similar to that found in paintings. Images of childhood memories and drawings, like a flower, a heart, an animal, a toy, shapes and colours changing with every moment, remind us of works of art created with sophistication and devotion by a great artist.Get ready for a journey into our wonderful, magical inner world; the organs and systems of our body. Page by page you will discover the amazing images of our tissues and cells revealed under the microscope. You will also learn how to protect yourselves against invisible enemies, viruses, and germs. Welcome to a unique scientific journey! You will be amazed at the beauty of knowledge! The creation of this book was the result of a collective effort between a group of people who worked with me and the publishing house that implemented it. Our common denominator was the magical combination of Science and Art. First of all, I would like to deeply thank, Niki Papatheochari, a diverse and significant personality, who, through her unique work, embodies a picture of perpetual creativity. It is a special honour for me that she prefaced the first edition of my book and contributed valuable advice and inspirational interventions. I thank her for warmly embracing this effort from beginning to end, and for the invaluable knowledge that she generously offered, both as a scientist and as a human being. I wholeheartedly thank the Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Athens Vasileios Golematis, a prominent figure in the global medical and academic community, for prefacing the second edition of my book. Professor Vasileios Golematis, a distinguished scientist and an exceptional man, is a model university teacher and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his students and colleagues. I would like to warmly thank the medical students Vagia Karapepera, for her wonderful sketches inspired by my lectures in Histology, and Michael Tsierkezos, for setting the book's text to music from which the accompanying video clip emerged. I would also like to thank Eleni Nalbandi for her valuable assistance in editing. Finally, I am really thankful to my family and all those who helped me with their know-how and moral support in completing this original project. Maria Lambropoulou
