Book SynopsisResponsibility.Authority.Mortality.If you could liberate yourself of these burdens, would any cost be too great? On a hot August night, a troubled fifteen-year-old boy with a tragic past wakes to find his tyrannical foster parents murdered by a trio of nocturnal, blood-drinking heathens. The killers give him the opportunity for a new life, one where he can be relieved of traditional hardships, vanquish his enemies, and attain a sense of true belonging…at the cost of what little remains of his humanity. The life he is offered is one of eternal darkness, but the promise of undying acceptance, freedom, and power gives it an appeal that his current dreaded existence is lacking.Fraught with resentment over his catastrophic adolescence and confronted by ambiguous notions of good and evil, he is forced to explore a dark world on the fringe between bliss and oblivion. As he edges ever closer to a climactic encounter with the demons that plague his soul, he discovers just how dangerous it is to be young and alienated in modern society.

Erewhon Books Womb City
Book Synopsis“A fearless novel that probes ideas of surveillance, misogyny and class. . . . Tsamaase brilliantly tackles ideas of motherhood and autonomy. The author seamlessly blends a body-hopping ghost story about revenge with a narrative about the importance of memory. It’s such an original first novel, and I’ll be reading whatever comes next.” —New York Times Book ReviewThis genre-bending Africanfuturist horror novel blends The Handmaid’s Tale with Get Out in an adrenaline-packed, cyberpunk body-hopping ghost story exploring motherhood, memory, and a woman’s right to her own body.Nelah seems to have it all: fame, wealth, and a long-awaited daughter growing in a government lab. But, trapped in a loveless marriage to a policeman who uses a microchip to monitor her every move, Nelah’s perfect life is precarious. After a drug-fueled evening culminates in an eerie car accident, Nelah commits a desperate crime and buries the body, daring to hope that she can keep one last secret. The truth claws its way into Nelah’s life from the grave. As the ghost of her victim viciously hunts down the people Nelah holds dear, she is thrust into a race against the clock: in order to save any of her remaining loved ones, Nelah must unravel the political conspiracy her victim was on the verge of exposing—or risk losing everyone. Set in a cruel futuristic surveillance state where bodies are a government-issued resource, this harrowing story is a twisty, nail-biting commentary on power, monstrosity, and bodily autonomy. In sickeningly evocative prose, Womb City interrogates how patriarchy pits women against each other as unwitting collaborators in their own oppression. In this devastatingly timely debut novel, acclaimed short fiction writer Tlotlo Tsamaase brings a searing intelligence and Botswana’s cultural sensibility to the question: just how far must a woman go to bring the whole system crashing down?Trade Review★ “The body horror and sci-fi elements work together beautifully, melding into a thrilling and thought-provoking page-turner. Tsamaase is a writer to watch.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review★ “Captivating and valiant. . . . With both chilling precision and anguished passion, Womb City depicts a toxic future of cyber-reincarnation and authoritarian omniscience.” —Foreword Reviews, starred review “This Afrofuturist novel’s twisty plot has a lot to say about inequality — and complicity.” —Los Angeles Times“Womb City pulsates with this gender-expansive feminist rage, propelling a narrative at breakneck speed—sometimes literally, for the characters—that leaves no one exempt from misogyny’s horrifying control.” —Los Angeles Review of Books“This Africanfuturist horror novel brings cyberpunk vibes, dystopian vibes, and ghost stories together for a great and unique read.” —Book Riot“Womb City is an Afrofuturist, cyberpunk, feminist, horror thrill ride and if that isn't enough... I can't help you.” —Book Culture“Enjoyably terrifying.” —New Scientist“Womb City is an introspective Africanfuturist horror for readers who love stories that take a swing at reductive views on gender and crime without hiding the awfulness those issues bring up.” —Lightspeed“A piercing critique of patriarchal power . . .Womb City is a gripping read for anyone interested in bringing down systems of oppression.” —Ancillary Review of Books“A fierce, furious, and fearless debut that has its finger on the pulse—no, the gushing wound—of our world's most invasive cruelties.” —Daniel Kraus, New York Times bestselling co-author of The Shape of Water “This beautifully written work haunts and upends expectations with its resurrected ghosts and gods and ancestors of Motswana cosmology. What an accomplished debut!” —T. L. Huchu, Caine Prize finalist and author of The Library of the Dead“This propulsive and brilliant page-turner is a searing indictment of the world in which we live, and I’m so glad it exists. Move aside Philip K. Dick and George Orwell—Tsamaase is the new visionary of our time.” —Marisa Crane, author of I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself“Womb City has it all: cyberpunk, Africanfuturism, and a determined, fierce protagonist. Unapologetically feminist in the best of ways, this book pushes the heroine to her limits and explores just how far she’ll go to bring down the entire corrupt system.” —N. E. Davenport, author of The Blood Trials“Raw and unflinching, lyrical and bombastic, Tsamaase has written a masterful techno-thriller that eviscerates the genre while surpassing it.” —Cadwell Turnbull, award-winning author of No Gods, No Monsters"A furious and vital read that finds in the human body a map of good, evil, and everything in between.” —Indra Das award-winning author of The Devourers

Anvil Press Publishers Inc Mysterious Dreams of the Dead
Book SynopsisAt the heart of Mysterious Dreams of the Dead is the spiritual search for a father who died in a plane crash north of Lake Superior when his son was fifteen. Mike Shintani decides in his early thirties to address the curious circumstances surrounding his father's death; the senior Shintani's body was never found, and wolves circled the crash site as if guarding the area. The impetus for Mike's search for truth is a diary he found in the basement of his home. It was obviously his father's, but it was written in Japanese. Mike never knew his father could write Japanese. He himself could neither read nor write the language. He was fortunate enough to enlist the help of Naoko Ito, a Japanese grad student at the University of Toronto. It turned out, the book was a dream diary, filled with poetry, descriptions of the surreal, and the story of a love affair with a woman named Chiemi. Chiemi is at the centre of the elder Shintani's dreams, and Naoko, after some time, seemingly disappears into thin air. Both appear as ghosts in dreams. Another great mystery of Mike's life is the behaviour of one of his best friends, Boku Sugiura, who decides one day to rob a bank, in the name of his grandfather and redress for Japanese Canadians. The two strains of the novel come together in Moose Jaw. Mike discovers the truth about his father's life and Boku's uncle (Daniel Sugiura from the Three Pleasures), a protestor in the Moose Jaw stand-off. Through elements of the Japanese ghost story (kwaidan), magic realism, and Buddhist myth, secrets are revealed and explored. The Mysterious Dreams of the Dead is an imaginative examination of the effect of the exile, internment, and dispersal on the third-generation of Japanese Canadians (the Sansei).

Great Plains Publications Ltd Homebodies: Stories
Book Synopsis"What does it mean to be at home? Are we ever truly alone in our houses? In Twisted, a woman loses her best friends daughter while an old acquaintance is on trial for murder; Nectar and Nickle introduces readers to a young girl who digs up the corpse of the family cat and comforts herself with macabre fairy tales. She meets a boy in the woods and turns him into part of her game. In Garden Bed secrets are buried in the garden plot with the best of intentions, but they are dug up by a fox who watches and sees everything. Haunted bodies, haunted houses, and haunted relationships colour this collection to show us that our homes are not our own. We are only guests. "Trade ReviewSurfaces deceive. LeBlancs deliciously creepy stories revel in pushing past the limitations of the body, of the domestic, and of the known even when this means guts are going to spill. In the tradition of writers such as Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, and Lisa Tuttle, these stories disorient and slide from the familiar and dreamy and into the nightmarish in the most thrilling of ways. LeBlanc kidnaps the reader and takes them on an unforgettable, screamingly great ride. Suzette Mayr, winner of the Giller PrizeAmy LeBlancs Homebodies is like a slow, sliding kaleidoscope of dreams. A series of glimpses into strained, disjointed families and communities, the book follows a network of disquieting characters with woundsboth figurative and very literalthat fester and pulse. The stories feel like admissions, like muffled secrets passed behind closed doors. They are fragmented but nonetheless fulldense and swollen with the characters blunted fears, their stark needs. LeBlancs writing is a shudder running through the body: a sensation that is visceral, reflexive, and inescapable. Like a boa snake constricting, like peristalsis, these stories will swallow you whole. Erica McKeen, author of TearAmy LeBlancs uncanny, open-ended stories perfectly capture the ambiguous anxieties of our pandemic times. This is an engrossing, contemporary, well-arranged collection with novelistic immersiveness. Seyward Goodhand, author of Even That Wildest HopeIn Homebodies, Amy LeBlanc moves time forward and backward, and mostlyunderneathfamilies, lovers, cats and friends. In these stories, growing up doesnt lighten the dark, understanding doesnt sweeten the lot, sadness and despair compete with spirit for space. Its LeBlanc who makes darkness palatable with her poignancy and poetic touch. Dont plan on putting Homebodies down after you pick it up. Susie Moloney, author The Thirteen and The Dwelling

But the team's elation is short-lived as they become trapped there in the dark, with little possibility of escape. Then events take an even more terrifying turn. For not all secrets are meant to be found . . . 'Gripping, exciting, page-turning fun. I suspect Michael Crichton would have been happy to put his name to it' John Connolly 'Crackles with claustrophobic tension that had me holding my breath. Sharp dialogue, a dizzying central plot, and a real sense of dread throughout, I couldn't sleep until I'd finished reading, and then I couldn't sleep just thinking about it. I loved it' Sarah Pinborough, bestselling author of BEHIND HER EYES'Brilliant. Thrilling, tense, dark, funny. Michael Crichton meets Indiana Jones' C. J. Tudor, author of THE CHALK MAN'Smart, scary and beautifully written - a thriller filled equally with shivers and real heart. I absolutely loved it' Steve Mosby 'This is my kind of book. The most exciting, unputdownable book I've read in a long time' Mark Edwards'Brilliant. Like Michael Crichton had written The Descent' Martyn Waites'Michael Crichton meets Stephen King' is what was promised - and boy, does it deliver' Simon Lelic, author of RUPTURE and THE HOUSETrade ReviewMichael Rutger adds depth to his characters from the start - we're as much drawn in to finding out what's going to happen to them as we are to learning what exactly they're going to discover. There are some truly horrific moments that Rutger communicates vividly without his point of view narrator needing to break character, and moments where you'll be seriously wondering how the team are going to get out of the situations they're in. And underpinning all this are some serious thoughts about conspiracies and the nature of faith * Sci Fi Bulletin *Rutger has crafted an intriguing and, at times, somewhat graphic tale that's never predictable and will appeal to fans of exploration and survival, as well as the X Files crowd * The NZ Herald *I loved everything about The Anomaly but if I had to pick something that particularly appealed - except for the brilliant plot - it would be this. The atmosphere is so frightening, claustrophobic and intense. Thriller and horror co-exist here and I found myself longing for fresh air, light and space. The Anomaly delivers on every level from start to finish and is extremely well-written, brilliantly imagined and such fun to read * For Winter Nights *Moore is a complex and likeable figure... an adventure thriller of the Michael Crichton variety * SFX Magazine *The definition of a page turner... packed full of the kind of dread and mystery that lingers long after the final page * Sci Fi Now *An exciting, intriguing and often distinctly frightening story * Nudge Books *An action-packed underground romp straight out of the Lara Croft school of archaeology * Crime Review *At times addictively bizarre, and at others displaying an unexpected emotional depth, this is an unmissable adventure from first to last * Lancashire Evening Post *If you like your sci-fi intertwined with a bit of horror and a bit of knowledge, you will definitely love this. (Did I just describe the Da Vinci Code?) But also if you like a captivating read and don't mind a bit of gore * Booker Than You *Rutger writes with such vivacious energy - blurring the line between historical fact and fiction so deftly...Rest assured, you'll struggle to find a more thrilling page-turner this year * Alternative Magazine Online *The Anomaly is chokingly good stuff. It's a book that grips the reader from the first page, a doomy and ominous prelude to what's to come, and Rutger wastes no time introducing his small cast of relatable, believable characters and pitches them into the living Hell of the almost unbearable situation they find themselves in pretty damned quickly * Starburst Magazine *A great set of characters, a super plot and clever dialogue, this book is a ton of fun * Sunday Sport *Absolutely loving this terrifying Creature Feature * Mark Hill *Rutger produces a work that can drill down to a character level with the skill of King, making us know and care about the people with ease, and then zoom right out. These personal moments followed by the big picture make this book truly cinematic * The Bookbag *Head and shoulders ahead of the competition. It zips along (I polished it off over the course of a day - which should tell you enough about how gripping the plot was!), the characters are ace, the dark tunnels sufficiently dark *and* scary, and it bounces along to an entirely satisfying conclusion. Someone said it was like the X-Files meets Indiana Jones, and they'd be entirely correct * Espresso Coco *If you're happy to suspend your disbelief from a well-rigged belay and some sturdy 10mm rope then The Anomaly provides an action-packed underground romp straight out of the Lara Croft school of archaeology * Darkness Below *

A dark and haunting read -- Lucie McKnight Hardy, author of Water Shall Refuse ThemI absolutely loved this claustrophobic and chilling story. Beautifully written with skilfully developed characters, Collins explores the themes of motherhood and identity. Atlantic Books Black Mamba
Book Synopsis'Great fun... the suspense slips its slow coils around you' Daily MailDaddy, there's a man in our room... This is the chilling announcement Alfie hears one night, when he wakes in his quiet, suburban house to find his twin daughters at the foot of his bed. It's been nine months since Pippa - their mother - suddenly died and they've been unsettled ever since, so Alfie assumes they've probably had a nightmare. Still, he goes to check to reassure the girls. As expected he finds no man, but in the following days the girls begin to refer to someone called Black Mamba. What seemingly begins as an imaginary friend quickly develops into something darker, more obsessive, potentially violent. Alfie finds himself struggling to cope, and so he turns to Julia - Pippa's twin and a psychotherapist - for help. But as Black Mamba's coils tighten around the girls, Alfie and Julia must contend with their own unspoken sense of loss, their unacknowledged attraction to one another, and the true character of the presence poisoning the twins' minds... A darkling tale of tragedy, hauntings and sexual desire, Black Mamba is a novel of a father's love for his struggling daughters, and a widower's growing love for a woman after his wife's death. With smart, gothicky touches and a large and generous challenge to our assumptions of what and who constitutes a modern family, it explores both the limits we'll go to for our children and the sunken taboos of grief - of how erotics can still exist, and can even be life giving, after suffering loss.Trade ReviewGreat fun... the suspense slips its slow coils around you * Daily Mail *Fans of literary horror will be absolutely captivated...
