Book Synopsis"This book is... a romantic history of romantic collecting. It takes seriously, and by necessity shares, the tendency of romantic histories to dwell upon their own fragmentariness, on the impossibility of capturing an intact history.... It...Trade ReviewPascoe's book, highly enjoyable and also nicely produced, meditates on the subterranean connections between the collecting passions of Romantic-era collectors and those of the poets, lines from whose poems they often quoted. Pascoe is insightful and playful in her explorations of the way private collectors, in the age between that of the great Renaissance princely or aristocratic cabinets of curiosity and the largely Victorian one of museums, were both fascinated by curious or beautiful material objects and rather poignantly used them to create what Henry James called a 'visitable' and Vernon Lee a 'companionable' past. -- Elizabeth Helsinger * SEL: Studies in English Literature 1500–1900 *

  • Up in the Air

Cornell University Press Up in the Air

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisUsing a mix of quantitative evidence and qualitative studies of airlines from North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Up in the Air provides clear and realistic strategies for achieving a better, more equitable balance competing interests.Trade ReviewUp in the Air is a fascinating account of the airline industry and its evolution.... Flying is an integral part of today's world and the low-cost airline model has increased this exponentially. As such a significant piece of our infrastructure it is important that we have a well-developed understanding of the necessary underpinnings of this complex business model. The authors have added first, a balanced, historical perspective of the business development and employee relations within airlines. Second, they offer strategic thinking from their research, which allows for sound planning within contemporary expectations of stakeholders at all levels. Third, they offer solutions for the growth and development of sound employee relations. For the human resource professional there is much value within this work. It is airline specific yet most readers would have a broad understanding of the salient arguments. It has research outcomes and analysis which are transferable to the workplace and HR strategic thinking and planning. It contains valuable models and diagrams, is well annotated and referenced. While academic in style, it is an easy read and tightly structured. It is also well written and has a clear place in today’s employee relations literature. -- Geoff De Lacy * Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources *Up in the Air tackles the complex external and internal environments of the world's airline industry. The authors are an impressive combination of Australian, European and U.S. employment relations scholars with significant research expertise in the airline industry.... This book is equally valuable in the classroom and the boardroom. The authors' use of a comparative industrial relations approach enriches one's understanding of the complex nature of employment relations. It would be lamentable not to recognize that this book's value extends far beyond airlines. The airline industry has a dynamic internal and external environment with employees spread around a nation or world; frontline employees make important decisions at any hour of the day or night. This book is instructive for successful employment relations strategy in a wide range of industries—particularly those with knowledge workers and/or dispersed frontline decision makers. -- E. Patrick McDermott * Journal of Industrial Relations *The book provides a detailed overview of the recent evolution and transformation of the U.S. civil aviation industry, especially the impact of low-cost competition and September 11, and it includes a penetrating analysis of the relative performance of different airlines. It pays adequate tribute to the importance of the old 'legacy' airlines in the industry, many of which have been national flag-carriers, though it pays particular attention to new entrants. Although the focus is on the US, the analysis is extended to other markets in Europe and Asia to produce a comprehensive account of competition, business strategies and human resource management in the world airline industry.... On the whole, the book is intellectually stimulating and a pleasure to read. It asks the right questions and combines thorough empirical research and informed analysis to answer them. The ideas, arguments and empirical analysis presented merit close attention and wide discussion. The authors even offer a road map to success for consumers, employees, and investors. While the book makes a significant contribution to the literature on human resource management and employment relations in the aviation industry, it is also useful as a starting point for future research. -- Stefan Zagelmeyer * Personnel Review *There is much to be appreciated about the contribution of Up in the Air that extends beyond the boundaries of the airline industry. The carefully explained lessons of the industry should be of interest to those in other industries where managers may believe that price competition necessitates 'bleak house' approaches to employment relations.... Overall what I most value about this book is its undeniable optimism and the pathway it describes to more sustainable employment relations strategies. This is not a naive optimism but is well-founded; securely anchored in insightful scholarly observations of what works in this fascinating industry. -- Peter Waring * Critical Perspectives on International Business *This refreshingly readable and persuasive book challenges the emerging orthodoxy that low-cost must mean low staff morale and low customer satisfaction. Drawing on examples from across the world, including 'legacy' airlines such as British Airways and new entrants such as Ryanair and easyJet, the authors analyse the competitive and employment-relations strategies that airlines have adopted. Outcomes for customers, employees, and other stakeholders are analysed. The authors categorise employment-relations strategies as either controlling employee behaviour, or aiming to foster commitment.... The authors suggest that the genuine partnerships should feature: joint commitment to the success of the enterprise; efforts to build trust; employment security in exchange for flexibility; quality training programmes; information sharing and joint problem solving with managers and employees. -- Jim McAuslan * The Log *What can airlines do in this new environment to overcome the obstacles and move toward sustainable profits? That is the subject of Up in the Air; to explain how the industry got to this point and what can be done to make it profitable. The central thesis, backed up with strong evidence, is that employee and customer satisfaction can coexist with increased revenue and profits.... Up in the Air uses statistics and anecdotes effectively. There are many tables and charts, but they are simple and usually easy to understand. There are also interviews with leading industry experts and company officials as well as stories of successes and failures.... This is an informative, balanced, well-researched, astute, and instructive treatise on the airline industry. The book is quite accessible to readers who are neither economists nor familiar with the industry. -- Carl Barsky * Monthly Labor Review *Table of ContentsPreface 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn writing the life of tobacco in Bulgaria from the late Ottoman period through the years of Communist rule, Neuburger gives us much more than the cultural history of a commodity; she provides a fresh perspective on the genesis of modern Bulgaria itself.Trade ReviewBalkan Smoke places Mary Neuburger squarely at the forefront of the burgeoning field of consumption, commodities, and material culture studies about East-Central Europe.... Neuburger adeptly ties together numerous strands of culture, economics, politics, and ideas into a coherent narrative of the ever-changing and competing expressions of "Bulgaria.' * Ab Imperio *In Balkan Smoke: Tobacco and the Making of Modern Bulgaria, Neuburger masterfully demonstrates how the yellow-leafed plant has been at the core of building the historical narrative of modern day Bulgaria. More importantly, it also reveals in a particularly poignant way the complex dynamics of national consumption and global flows of goods and the ideologies they encapsulate.... Neuburger has a keen eye both for factual details and for cultural minutia, which reveals her remarkable ease and extreme, almost native-like, level of comfort and familiarity with the often hidden nuances of Bulgaria's less obvious cultural references. * Consumption Markets & Culture *Mary C. Neuburger's brilliant new book recounts the social life of tobacco in the past two centuries.... It creatively utilizes the extensive Bulgarian literature on the tobacco industry and cultural works on everyday life to produce a highly original account of the making of Bulgarian modernity.... [A] remarkably well-researched and inspiringly written work. * American Historical Review *Neuburger's work sharpens our understandings of Bulgarian economic history.... It is dense stuff, and I am terribly impressed with Neuburger’s ability to bring it all together in a coherent narrative. She has added a new thread to our understanding of the development of modern nationalism. * Slavic Review *One of the strongest contributions of Balkan Smoke is Neuburger's method. She uses tobacco and smoking as a lens through which to rethink the parameters of Bulgarianhistory. In doing so, she argues that tobacco production and consumption spurred deep transformations and brought a modern condition to Bulgaria's tobacco-growing regions.... Tobacco runs through each topic and it is evident that they are all tied to the others in both obvious and hidden ways. And this is precisely where Balkan Smoke shines. * Ab Imperio *This fascinating book explores the history of tobacco and tobacco culture in Bulgaria from the mid-19th century, when the country became partially and then fully independent from the Ottoman Empire, to the postcommunist present. Neuburger... argues convincingly that smoking and the production of tobacco products played an important—if not the key—part in Bulgaria's political, economic; and cultural modernization during this period.... Summing Up: Highly recommended. * Choice *This smart, scrupulous, and elegant volume shows just how much interpretative power and creative reach a carefully executed commodity history can have. Balkan Smoke takes up the story of tobacco in a society that, like no other, has been shaped by the plant's production, distribution, consumption, and incorporation into mass and high culture.... Balkan Smoke is a thoughtful, innovative work of history writing and, in many ways, a valuable, fresh, and highly original contribution not just to national and regional historiography but to European history and economic history more generally, and to the expanding field of commodity studies. * The Journal of Modern History *Table of ContentsIntroduction1. Book SynopsisWinner of the Eugene Emme Astronautical Literature Prize from the American Astronautical Society For eight days in October 1984, seven men and women orbitied the Earth on Space Shuttle Mission 41-G. The mission has begun a year earlier; however, with the select of its crew. Before Lift-off is the extraordinary day-to-day story of these astronauts' training and flight-and is as close as most of us will ever come to flying on the space shuttle. New Yorker writer Henry Cooper obtained unprecedented permission from NASA to follow the 41-G crew from its formation through the completion of its mission. He was even given access to the heart of the training program: the crew's sessions in the shuttle mision simulators. More than a chronical of different phases in the astronauts' learning process, Before Lift-off tells the story of the bonding of these men and women. It would be Captain Robert Crippen's fourth space flight, his second command in six months, and Sally Ride's second shuttle voyage. For rookies Davida Leestra, Jon McBride, and Kathy Sullivan, and for two payload specialists, the experience would mark an initiation into the most elite groups-those people who have ventured into space.Trade ReviewWritten in a journalistic style without scholarly apparatus, it is an excellent first person account of the 1984 mission of STS-41G -- Roger D. Mr. Lewis has painted a balanced, complete picture of an extremely complex man. It's obvious the author has a love for his subject, but this is not hagiography: All aspects of Rickenbacker's personality are laid on the table. Book SynopsisMany books discuss the theology and doctrine of the medieval liturgy: there is no dearth of information on the history of the liturgy, the structure and development of individual services, and there is much discussion of specific texts, chants, and services. No book, at least in English, has struggled with the difficulties of finding texts, chants, or other material in the liturgical manuscripts themselves, until the publication of Medieval Manuscripts for Mass and Office in 1982.Encompassing a period of several centuries, ca 1200-1500, this book provides solutions for such endeavours. Although by this period the basic order and content of liturgical books were more or less standardized, there existed hundreds of different methods of dealing with the internal organisation and the actual writing of the texts and chants on the page. Generalization becomes problematic; the use of any single source as a typical example for more than local detail is impossible. Taking for

Book SynopsisWhen award-winning journalist Dave Jamieson rediscovered his childhood baseball card collection he figured that now was the time to cash in on his “investments.” But when he tried the card shops, they were nearly all gone, closed forever. eBay was no help, either. Baseball cards were selling for next to nothing. What had happened? In Mint Condition, the first comprehensive history of this American icon, Jamieson finds the answers and much more. In the years after the Civil War, tobacco companies started slipping baseball cards into cigarette packs as collector’s items, launching a massive advertising war. Before long, the cards were wagging the cigarettes. In the 1930s, baseball cards helped gum and candy makers survive the Great Depression, and kept children in touch with the game. After World War II, Topps Chewing Gum Inc. built itself into an American icon, hooking a generation of baby boomers on bubble gum and baseball cards. In the 1960s, royalties from cards helped to transform the players’ union into one of the country’s most powerful, dramatically altering the business of the game. And in the ''80s and ''90s, cards went through a spectacular bubble, becoming a billion-dollar-a-year industry before all but disappearing. Brimming with colorful characters, this is a rollicking, century-spanning, and extremely entertaining history.
