Disillusioned with your middlin' wage, average body, 'bijou' living situation and imperfect loved ones? Welcome to the club. There are billions of us. The 'default disenchanted'. But, it's not us being brats. Two deeply inconvenient psychological phenomenons conspire against our satisfaction. We have negatively-biased brains, which zoom like doom-drones in on what's wrong with our day, rather than what's right. (Back in the mists of time, this negative bias saved our skins, but now it just makes us anxious). Also, something called the 'hedonic treadmill' means we eternally quest for better, faster, more, like someone stuck on a dystopian, never-ending treadmill. Thankfully, there are scientifically-proven ways in which we can train our brains to be more positive-seeking. And to take a rest from this tireless pursuit. Whew.Catherine Gray knits together illuminating science and hilarious storytelling, unveiling captivating research showing that big bucks don't mean big happiness, extraordinary experiences have a 'comedown' and budget weddings predict a lower chance of divorce. She reminds us what an average body actually is, reveals that exercising for weight loss means we do less exercise, and explores the modern tendency to not just try to keep up with the Murphys, but keep up with the Mega-Murphies (see: the social media elite).Come on in to this soulful and life-affirming read, to discover why an ordinary life may well be the most satisfying one of all.Trade ReviewLife-affirming. -- THE TELEGRAPHWonderful. -- INDEPENDENTShe made it her mission to learn how to be default happy rather than default disgruntled. -- RADIO 4 - WOMAN'S HOURTake a leaf out of Gray's book and be kinder to yourself by appreciating life just as it is. -- IRISH TIMESThis book came to me in an hour of need - during lockdown when I had to focus on the positive, appreciate simple things, not lose my shit, and value each day. Taschen GmbH 20th Century Alcohol & Tobacco Ads. 40th Ed.
Book SynopsisVices or virtues: drinking and smoking provided marketers with products to be forged into visual feasts. In this lush compendium of advertisements, we explore how depictions of these commodities spanned from the elegant to the offbeat, revealing how manufacturers prodded their customers throughout the 20th century to imbibe and inhale. Each era’s alcohol and tobacco trends are exuberantly captured page after page, with brand images woven into American popular culture so effectively that almost anyone could identify such icons as the Marlboro Man or Spuds MacKenzie, figures so familiar they could appear in ads without the product itself. Other advertisers devised clever and subliminal approaches to selling their wares, as the wildly successful Absolut campaign confirmed. Even doctors contributed to an improbable propaganda, testifying that smoking could calm your nerves and soothe your throat, while hailing liquor as an elixir capable of bringing social success. Whether you savor these visual delights, or enjoy inhaling and wallowing in forbidden pleasures, you will certainly be thrilled by this exploration of a decidedly vibrant—and sometimes controversial—chapter of advertising history.Trade Review“These are the ads that wooed us, and our parents, and our parents’ parents, over to the dark side of smokes and booze.” * Esquire *“… the 100-year-long tale of how advertising tried to get consumers hooked.” * The Guardian *“A wonderful selection of the kitsch and the bizarre.” * Creative Review *

SawyerBerson’s prodigious use of traditional and modern vocabularies has gained the firm widespread recognition and many notable clients. Meticulous attention to detail and versatility combine to create a wide variety of projects. In the Hamptons, a modernist house of stone and glass lets in the sun and sea views while secluded by the dunes and drifts of native grasses. Another residence is built according to the pinwheel floor plans of early twentieth-century houses by Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright to accommodatTrade Review"When Brian Sawyer and John Berson founded their eponymous New York firm in 1999, the synergies between architecture, landscape, and interiors were immediately clear. This book reflects that harmonious spirit through projects like a grand East End estate that still embraces the area’s simple shingle vernacular, a midcentury-modern home in Bridgehampton sporting a cantilevered roof terrace, and a Manhattan town house brightened by a brick and ivy garden." —ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST"The first book from Sawyer | Berson illustrates the award-winning firm’s quintessential pairings of modernism and classicism in seaside houses, metropolitan residences, and spectacular garden retreats." —MOFFLY MEDIA""To be modern is not a fashion, but a state," Le Corbusier once said. "It is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and which will be." Few contemporary design firms are as up to the task as Sawyer | Berson, the practice began in 1999 by Brian Sawyer and John Berson. They met in the office of the famed Robert A.M. Stern and developed an approach that treated architecture, landscape design and interior design as equals in the pursuit of an aesthetic beau idéal. This, their first book, is required reading for anyone wishing to understand that which will be." —TOWN AND COUNTRY

Key Publishing Ltd Lockheed Constellation
Book SynopsisWhile many airliners from the Second World War have either disappeared completely or only survived as remnants in a museum, approximately 55 Constellations out of the 856 built still survive today, and two of them, both C-121s, are airworthy. A real head turner, the Connie' raised the bar in both performance, economy and passenger comfort and can arguably be described as one of the most beautiful airliners ever built. The Lockheed Constellation was an aircraft that broke the mould when it came to early airliner design. The standard approach of a straight, tubular fuselage and a conventional tail and wing arrangement is still the tried and tested configuration of all airliners to this day. The US military's enthusiasm also helped to advance the development of the Constellation which, in turn, benefitted civilian airlines with the arrival of the Super Constellation and the definitive variant, the Starliner, which sadly came too late to make a huge impression as, from the mid-1950s onwards, the trend swung rapidly towards jet power. With the arrival of the jet, Constellations were replaced by the major operators although a number remained in passenger service into the late 1960s, and the last passenger-carrying flight did not take place until 1978 in the Dominican Republic. Delve into the story of this beautiful aircraft with this fully illustrated history.
