  • The Period Ship Handbook: Volume 3

Special Interest Model Books The Period Ship Handbook: Volume 3

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the simple to the sophisticated, a detailed look at the making of ten new static model ship projects which demonstrate the transition from kits to scratch building. Chapters dedicated to the building of each vessel lead the model maker through the various phases of construction, advising on both the methods and procedures required to build models up to exhibition standard. The range of subjects extends from the simple Bounty's Jolly Boat to HMS Bounty itself. The huge San Felipe is representative of the Spanish warship of the late 17th century, and the 1:48 scale Viola takes the modeller into the fascinating world of early twentieth century American whaling. A later chapter summarises rigging terminology and modelling techniques - that part of the building process that unjustifiably deters many from delving into the most satisfying hobby of static model sailing ships.Table of Contents74-Gun Bellona. Special Interest Model Books Electromechanical Building Blocks: For the Model

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisElectronic and electromechanical control of machinery and equipment in the factory environment has been commonplace for many years and is steadily finding its place in the model engineer's workshop. This book gives the theoretical and practical details of electronic circuits that can be used to control machinery for the model engineer and the 'inventor'. There has recently been a huge expansion in computer and electronic control which model engineers have found desirable, yet expensive. Here, the author provides the vital information for the model engineer to build his own control units using a modular, or 'building block', approach. Very clear easy-to-follow circuit diagrams and instructions are at the heart of the book, enabling the model engineer to analyse his requirements and assemble the building blocks using readily available components and commonplace workshop skills. The book brings modern machinery control technology within reach of the model engineer, the robotics enthusiast and the experimenter.Trade ReviewThere must be hundreds of books on Electronics but very few written specifically with the Model Engineer in mind. The control of machine tools by computer (CNC), previously the sole preserve of the professional engineer is now gaining ground rapidly with the amateur machinist. This has been due to reduced hardware costs and engineers prepared to 'have a go' for themselves. This book covers in considerable detail all the information required to carry out a successful conversion of existing equipment or to assist in the design of new machines. The traditional 'mechanical' engineer can no longer ignore the electromechanical aspect and this book will be a most welcome addition to any library. The 24 chapters cover a wide range of topics from Basic Electromagnetic Theory thro' to making your own PCB's, via Stepper Motors, Servos etc. on the way. This book provides an informative and absorbing read into the subject without being over technical, and will provide a handy reference for anyone wishing to gain expert knowledge of this rapidly expanding aspect of modern machine shop practice. The book would be an excellent primer for any young engineer or student contemplating a career in this fascinating branch of modern production engineering - Engineering in MiniatureTable of ContentsBasic Electromagnetic Theory. Book SynopsisBrian King has earned an international reputation for the quality of his models, all built using skills initially learned during a 5-year craft apprentice-ship when he acquired the basic practical skills in both wood and metal work. These skills, allied to a natural talent, have resulted in his very complicated models of large battleships from all eras. This book is a compilation of material originally published in the specialist hobby magazine Model Boats in which the master modeller has passed on many gems of experience to would-be builders of ship models, including anchors, gun barrels, portholes, decking, rudders, propellors, fittings; turrets; basic hulls; close-up on life saving gear; cowl ventilators; computers and modelling, photographing your models and working to dimensions. A lifetime of modelling experience is contained within these pages. There are few modellers, expert or novice, who will not benefit from this opportunity to read and learn. Previous books by Brian King include Advanced Ship Modelling (2000; 1-85486-122-0) and Photo Etching (2005; 1-85486-237-5).Trade ReviewThis book contains 184 pages packed with many photographs and diagrams by this eminent author, who has also written many articles for the specialist boat magazine Model Boats. The book is a compilation of material taken from his articles written in the magazine. There are 43 short chapters which cover all subjects from tools to use. For example, saws, drills, lathes and solders and, most importantly, the parts that have to be added to the ship to complete the finished article, the anchors, davits, companionways, guns, shrouds, ratlines, masts and all the basic requirements needed for a model. There are many good hints on how to paint the hull correctly and the installation of rudders and propellers. This book solves all solutions and helps to make it a superior ship model. The author's specialty is warships, and there are examples of his superb work. The book is very detailed, and I personally think aimed more for the 'Professional' or superior model maker, and not for the likes of myself, who has problems sticking together your average plastic kit. However, after saying that, I feel this book will help the more discerning modeller. It is a very well produced publication, and I recommend it to all serious model makers - The Nautical Magazine The author, an experienced ship modeller, draws on his considerable skills to describe how to build a ship's hull, make gun barrels, life-saving gear and cast resin and plastic parts. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisModel Airplanes are Decadent and Depraved tells the story of the American glue-sniffing epidemic of the 1960s, from the first reports of use to the unsuccessful crusade for federal legislation in the early 1970s. The human obsession with inhalation for intoxication has deep roots, from the oracle at Delphi to Judaic biblical ritual. The discovery of nitrous oxide, ether, and chloroform in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and the later development of paint thinners, varnishes, lighter fluid, polishes, and dry-cleaning supplies provided a variety of publicly available products with organic solvents that could be inhaled for some range of hallucinogenic or intoxicating effect. Model airplane glue was one of those products, but did not appear in warnings until the first reports of problematic behavior appeared in 1959, when children in several western cities were arrested for delinquency after huffing glue. Newspaper coverage both provided the initial shot acros

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCreate a shared space for collaborative making: designing and building DIY electronic hardware, programming, and manufacturing projects. With this illustrated guide, you'll find clear explanations of the tools, software, materials, and layout you need to get started.Trade Review"I have just finished reading Adam Kemp's 'The Makerspace Workbench, ' and I'm enormously impressed. He has a command of a very broad range of tools and skills, and his guidance will save both novice and experienced Makers a good deal of trial and error. Kemp discusses complicated equipment like laser cutters and 3D printers in depth, but does not let the glamor of high tech run away with the show. His discourse on clamps and tape, for example, was a revelation and explained clearly why they behave the way they do and the applications in which they will be the most useful. In short, this is a fantastic book and already has earned a location on the shelf in our Makerspace."-- David RossellDirector of Technology, Holton-Arms School
