  • King George V Class Battleships: Shipcraft 2

Pen & Sword Books Ltd King George V Class Battleships: Shipcraft 2

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. The five battleships of the class covered by this volume were the most modern British capital ships to serve in the Second World War. They were involved in many famous actions including the sinking of both Bismarck and Scharnhorst, while Prince of Wales suffered the unfortunate distinction of being the first capital ship sunk at sea by air attack.

  • Simple Workshop Devices

Special Interest Model Books Simple Workshop Devices

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHowever well equipped the workshop may be there seems to be an incessant need to make up special gadgets of one sort or another. These may range from mutilating a clothes peg to act as a 'third hand' up to major modifications to an existing machine tool. The making of such devices can be fun (indeed, some may appear to do nothing else!) but nevertheless the time taken up in 'devising the device' can often delay the completion of an important project. Shared experience is a most potent tool in reducing such delays, and can, moreover, often provide solutions to problems hitherto believed to be intractable. Tubal Cain has enjoyed more than sixty years' experience in designing and building engines and machines (in both full size and model dimensions) and over this time has made many ancillary devices. In this book he shares 52 of them with you. A number of these had been published in magazines from time to time and some were assembled in volume form about thirty years ago. The opportunity was later taken not only to reprint that book but to revise some of the entries to take advantage of user experience, to add new material and to introduce it into the popular Workshop Practice Series.Table of ContentsFive Clamp and Vice Projects. Ten Jigs and Fixtures. Twenty-five Projects Round and About the Lathe. Thirteen Miscellaneous Projects.

  • Foundrywork for the Amateur

Special Interest Model Books Foundrywork for the Amateur

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is regarded as the perfect introduction to casting common hot metals in moulds, providing all the information needed by amateur foundrymen. Since 1954, when Foundrywork for the Amateur was first published, the advance of technology and engineering has been enormous and there have been many revisions along the way. However, conditions in the 21st century are so far removed from the state of affairs in the 1950s that, although the basic principle of the foundry remains the same, the language and the presentation of the book was due to be uplifted. This present edition therefore represents a complete rewrite to conform to the era and, in particular, to the availability of material which at one time was taken for granted. Not only has the text been updated, but the illustrations have been completely redrawn and, on the basis of the advances made in the amateur foundry since the early days, the photographs have also been renewed and increased in number. This new edition also reflects the author's growing interest in the model steam locomotive.Table of ContentsCrucibles. The Furnace. Foundry Sand. Moulding Boxes. Pattern Making. • Advanced Ship Modelling

Special Interest Model Books Advanced Ship Modelling

    1 in stock

Brian King has spent a lifetime either thinking of, or actually building, model boats. This book is the result of that life's work, as well as 25 years' experience as a trained engineer and a college lecturer in engineering. It tackles advanced theory and practice for the maritime modeller and the author's own philosophy on model-making. The book covers the philosophy of model-making; building static and working models, researching sources of information and reading drawings. In the workshop, the projects involve materials, hulls, superstructure and decks, armament, ships' boats, finishing and painting, etching and making glass display cases. The advanced theory and technique in this book is largely based on the author's own very complicated modelling projects, including Victorian warships Devastation and Magnificent, 20th century ships Belfast and Queen Elizabeth, the pre-war aircraft carrier Glorious and the battleship Anson, as well as scale model RNLI lifeboats including Grace Darling's famous coble.

  • Regulator Clock Construction

Special Interest Model Books Regulator Clock Construction

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book describes the construction of two different clock projects - an eight day regulator clock and a month going regulator clock - and features full-page fully-dimensionalised working drawings supported by detailed photographs. It also includes instructions and plans for constructing glazed wood cases for each project. It is intended for model engineering hobbyists with basic facilities to enable them to venture into the field of horology by building their own precision clocks which can become treasured family heirlooms. The term 'regulator' simply describes a precision clock. Every clockmaker and repairer needs such an instrument to use in regulating his repair and new work. The typical English regulator, as described in the first section, beats at one second intervals and will run for eight days between winding. The second project is a month going regulator clock, an equally high precision type which will run for a whole month between winding. This book is based on a popular series of popular articles originally published over many years in Model Engineer magazine.Trade ReviewThe publisher has built a very successful niche in special interest books of a technical and engineering nature. This is a worthy addition to the list. The author has described the design and construction of an 8 day regulator clock that requires only a modest selection of engineering tools and which could be built using components made to order by an engineering company. The result is a fine clock with an open dial that provides a view of most of the clock works, mounted in a wooden case with three sides in glass. As a clock, it will provide good time keeping. As an engineering project it will build into a satisfying and practical item that requires only wall space. As an object, it makes a good taking point. The descriptive text is well written and provides a very easy to follow guide to building the clock. The text is accompanied by very clear engineering drawings that provide all of the detail necessary to complete the components and assemble the clock - firetrench.com.Table of ContentsCONTENTS. • Workshop Machinery

Special Interest Model Books Workshop Machinery

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMaking a major purchase of a lathe, a milling machine or combination lathe/mill, whether manually operated or using computer numerical control (CNC), is a daunting prospect for any model engineer. This book provides practical advice on how to make the selection bearing in mind the particular needs of the individual. It provides descriptions and technical data about the wide range of machines and accessories available from UK, European, American and Far East manufacturers. It also looks at the many different types of tooling fixtures and accessories that may be required. This book will be welcomed by all model engineers who are setting up a home workshop or planning a major equipment acquisition.Trade ReviewThis book is number 46 in the ever expanding WORKSHOP PRACTICE SERIES. The series now covers virtually every aspect of machine shop practice, and lucky is the workshop with a complete set. This latest book by Alex Weiss covers in varying detail virtually all the currently available lathes and milling machines to be found in the home workshop, or indeed the smaller professional shop. This is a very up to date book with chapters on tooling, fixtures, combo's and that item becoming increasingly popular, the CNC machine. Once the preserve of top end professional workshops these machines are now making serious inroads into the home workshop. It is quite possible that in 20 years you will not be able to buy a manual lathe. There seems to be reluctance in some model engineering circles to eschew CNC machines but very few people still use treadle operated lathes !! The range of machines covered is staggering, including over 100 Far East lathes alone and almost as many milling machines. Second hand machines are also mentioned such as the much loved Tom Senior. If you are considering a new workshop or replacing an old machine this book is surely a must.' Colin Usher, Engineering in Miniature.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements. Introduction. Lathes. Book SynopsisARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH?Ben Aitken wasn't. Increasingly flat and decreasingly zen, he knew that something had to change. So he joined a lawn bowls club. About a week later, he continued his assault on the doldrums by taking a cheerleading class. Then - with an almost entirely reformed selfhood winking appealingly on the horizon- he went cold-water swimming and was back to square one.Despite the inevitable setbacks and missteps, it was becoming clear to Aitken that the very pursuit of fun was a great route to feeling less naff. And so he made a vow to go after the f-stuff with as much gusto as he could muster. (Starting with the crossword.) Over the next year, he filled his calendar with a plethora of potentially pleasurable pursuits. He did things he'd never done before but reckoned could be fun (a pilgrimage in Spain, afternoon bingo); things whose fun-factor was less obvious and more down-to-earth (volunteering in a charity shop, sitting on a bench); and things he wasn't at all sure about but were fun according to other people (improv, wakeboarding, learning Welsh).Although the results were mixed, the author's year of making merry left him feeling undoubtedly ... better. Which invites the question: if fun is such a reliable mood-swinger, shouldn't we be having more of it?Trade Review**** - four stars! * Mail on Sunday *

  • Fletcher and Class Destroyers: No. 8

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Fletcher and Class Destroyers: No. 8

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, using scale plans to highlight differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers, then moves to an extensive photographic survey of either a high-quality model or a surviving example of the ship. Hints on building the model, and on modifying and improving the basic kit, are followed by a section on paint schemes and camouflage, featuring numerous colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings. The strengths and weaknesses of available kits of the ships are reviewed, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. The subject of this volume is the Fletcher class, often considered the most successful of all American destroyers. Built to the first design that was freed from treaty restrictions, they came into service near the beginning of the Pacific War and fought with distinction through all the most ferocious of the campaigns against Japan. They were constructed in large numbers, with a number of variations, and their popularity is reflected by the wide range of available kits.

  • Model Engineer's Handbook

Special Interest Model Books Model Engineer's Handbook

    1 in stock

All professional engineers have a little book in which they jot down those notes of fact, figures and formulae which they feel that they are likely to need on future occasions. It is always more convenient to look up one's own records than to wade through a lot of associated, but irrelevant material, especially as this may mean a trip to the reference library. Over a period of years, the contents of such notebooks grow to cover a wealth of vital information, and the time saved can be considerable. During his professional life, Tubal Cain filled three such books and, as a lifelong engineer, he is in a unique position to select (and add to) the material most useful to the amateur engineer. Model Engineer's Handbook comprises a compilation of those tables, facts, procedures and data which the author himself found valuable in his model engineering activities and it provides a real mine of information to which you will return again and again. Not the least of its attributes is the use, where appropriate, of data and calculations in both Imperial and SI units, so that all generations of model engineers can feel at home. In this third edition, all the existing data has been updated or re-arranged for greater clarity and much new matter has been added to provide an even more comprehensive book, indispensable to the expert and beginner alike.

Icon Books Platform Souls: The Trainspotter as 20th-Century

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNicholas Whittaker's much-loved classic recollects the long sunny days of his childhood when, notepad in hand, jam sandwiches in the duffel bag, he happily spent his time jotting down train numbers during the Indian summer of steam and the heyday of diesel.Whittaker returns to his roots in this updated edition, casting a sceptical eye over recent developments, catching up with old acquaintances and considering the toll that half a century of ridicule and a couple of decades of privatisation have wrought upon his beloved pastime. As Andrew Martin notes in his Foreword, this is 'one of the best books ever written about rail enthusiasm'. Equally it is a poetically written memoir of growing up in a more innocent age, a hymn to British eccentricity and to the virtues of observing the world around you: 'Spotters - of trains, planes, buses or birds - are a last redoubt for something rapidly vanishing from our lives: looking outward, seeing, observing. People notice things less and less these days, while watching things more and more.'Praise for the first edition:'An elegy: for the steam trains already vanishing when Whittaker's hobby began in 1964; for the short-lived diesel age which followed; for an era of near innocence.' Times Literary Supplement 'Whittaker writes with humour and considerable evocative power . For anyone who will admit to having a childhood brush with this now derided hobby, Platform Souls brings it all rushing back.' IndependentTrade ReviewWhittaker writes with great warmth and wit and his autobiographical style makes Platform Souls an engaging read, even for those who don't particularly share his love of railways. * Shropshire Review *the author's words sing off the page * Burton Mail *
