It offers both the basic theory covering the steam power plant and fully detailed drawings for the construction of simple and advanced steam engines, boilers and ancillary equipment. Special Interest Model Books Regulator Clock Construction
Book SynopsisThis book describes the construction of two different clock projects - an eight day regulator clock and a month going regulator clock - and features full-page fully-dimensionalised working drawings supported by detailed photographs. It also includes instructions and plans for constructing glazed wood cases for each project. It is intended for model engineering hobbyists with basic facilities to enable them to venture into the field of horology by building their own precision clocks which can become treasured family heirlooms. The term 'regulator' simply describes a precision clock. Every clockmaker and repairer needs such an instrument to use in regulating his repair and new work. The typical English regulator, as described in the first section, beats at one second intervals and will run for eight days between winding. The second project is a month going regulator clock, an equally high precision type which will run for a whole month between winding. This book is based on a popular series of popular articles originally published over many years in Model Engineer magazine.Trade ReviewThe publisher has built a very successful niche in special interest books of a technical and engineering nature. This is a worthy addition to the list. The author has described the design and construction of an 8 day regulator clock that requires only a modest selection of engineering tools and which could be built using components made to order by an engineering company. The result is a fine clock with an open dial that provides a view of most of the clock works, mounted in a wooden case with three sides in glass. As a clock, it will provide good time keeping. As an engineering project it will build into a satisfying and practical item that requires only wall space. As an object, it makes a good taking point. The descriptive text is well written and provides a very easy to follow guide to building the clock. The text is accompanied by very clear engineering drawings that provide all of the detail necessary to complete the components and assemble the clock - firetrench.com.Table of ContentsCONTENTS. Special Interest Model Books Workshop Machinery
Book SynopsisMaking a major purchase of a lathe, a milling machine or combination lathe/mill, whether manually operated or using computer numerical control (CNC), is a daunting prospect for any model engineer. This book provides practical advice on how to make the selection bearing in mind the particular needs of the individual. It provides descriptions and technical data about the wide range of machines and accessories available from UK, European, American and Far East manufacturers. It also looks at the many different types of tooling fixtures and accessories that may be required. This book will be welcomed by all model engineers who are setting up a home workshop or planning a major equipment acquisition.Trade ReviewThis book is number 46 in the ever expanding WORKSHOP PRACTICE SERIES. The series now covers virtually every aspect of machine shop practice, and lucky is the workshop with a complete set. This latest book by Alex Weiss covers in varying detail virtually all the currently available lathes and milling machines to be found in the home workshop, or indeed the smaller professional shop. This is a very up to date book with chapters on tooling, fixtures, combo's and that item becoming increasingly popular, the CNC machine. Once the preserve of top end professional workshops these machines are now making serious inroads into the home workshop. It is quite possible that in 20 years you will not be able to buy a manual lathe. There seems to be reluctance in some model engineering circles to eschew CNC machines but very few people still use treadle operated lathes !! The range of machines covered is staggering, including over 100 Far East lathes alone and almost as many milling machines. Second hand machines are also mentioned such as the much loved Tom Senior. If you are considering a new workshop or replacing an old machine this book is surely a must.' Colin Usher, Engineering in Miniature.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements. Introduction. Lathes. Combined lathes and milling machines. Milling machines. CNC machines. Lathe and mill tooling/fixtures. Conclusions. Useful contacts. Index.

Icon Books Here Comes the Fun: A Year of Making Merry
Book SynopsisARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH?Ben Aitken wasn't. Increasingly flat and decreasingly zen, he knew that something had to change. So he joined a lawn bowls club. About a week later, he continued his assault on the doldrums by taking a cheerleading class. Then - with an almost entirely reformed selfhood winking appealingly on the horizon- he went cold-water swimming and was back to square one.Despite the inevitable setbacks and missteps, it was becoming clear to Aitken that the very pursuit of fun was a great route to feeling less naff. And so he made a vow to go after the f-stuff with as much gusto as he could muster. (Starting with the crossword.) Over the next year, he filled his calendar with a plethora of potentially pleasurable pursuits. He did things he'd never done before but reckoned could be fun (a pilgrimage in Spain, afternoon bingo); things whose fun-factor was less obvious and more down-to-earth (volunteering in a charity shop, sitting on a bench); and things he wasn't at all sure about but were fun according to other people (improv, wakeboarding, learning Welsh).Although the results were mixed, the author's year of making merry left him feeling undoubtedly ... better. Which invites the question: if fun is such a reliable mood-swinger, shouldn't we be having more of it?Trade Review**** - four stars! * Mail on Sunday *

Special Interest Model Books Model Engineer's Handbook
All professional engineers have a little book in which they jot down those notes of fact, figures and formulae which they feel that they are likely to need on future occasions. It is always more convenient to look up one's own records than to wade through a lot of associated, but irrelevant material, especially as this may mean a trip to the reference library. Over a period of years, the contents of such notebooks grow to cover a wealth of vital information, and the time saved can be considerable. During his professional life, Tubal Cain filled three such books and, as a lifelong engineer, he is in a unique position to select (and add to) the material most useful to the amateur engineer. Model Engineer's Handbook comprises a compilation of those tables, facts, procedures and data which the author himself found valuable in his model engineering activities and it provides a real mine of information to which you will return again and again. Not the least of its attributes is the use, where appropriate, of data and calculations in both Imperial and SI units, so that all generations of model engineers can feel at home. In this third edition, all the existing data has been updated or re-arranged for greater clarity and much new matter has been added to provide an even more comprehensive book, indispensable to the expert and beginner alike.

Icon Books Platform Souls: The Trainspotter as 20th-Century
Book SynopsisNicholas Whittaker's much-loved classic recollects the long sunny days of his childhood when, notepad in hand, jam sandwiches in the duffel bag, he happily spent his time jotting down train numbers during the Indian summer of steam and the heyday of diesel.Whittaker returns to his roots in this updated edition, casting a sceptical eye over recent developments, catching up with old acquaintances and considering the toll that half a century of ridicule and a couple of decades of privatisation have wrought upon his beloved pastime. As Andrew Martin notes in his Foreword, this is 'one of the best books ever written about rail enthusiasm'. Equally it is a poetically written memoir of growing up in a more innocent age, a hymn to British eccentricity and to the virtues of observing the world around you: 'Spotters - of trains, planes, buses or birds - are a last redoubt for something rapidly vanishing from our lives: looking outward, seeing, observing. People notice things less and less these days, while watching things more and more.'Praise for the first edition:'An elegy: for the steam trains already vanishing when Whittaker's hobby began in 1964; for the short-lived diesel age which followed; for an era of near innocence.' Times Literary Supplement 'Whittaker writes with humour and considerable evocative power . For anyone who will admit to having a childhood brush with this now derided hobby, Platform Souls brings it all rushing back.' IndependentTrade ReviewWhittaker writes with great warmth and wit and his autobiographical style makes Platform Souls an engaging read, even for those who don't particularly share his love of railways. * Shropshire Review *the author's words sing off the page * Burton Mail *

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc The Ukulele Handbook
Book SynopsisThe definitive illustrated guide to the ukulele, from its history to how to play, including a fantastic songbook. The ukulele has gone from strength to strength in recent years, undergoing a massive resurgence. You can hear the uke all over the place, from trendster indie rock to top ten pop songs, from unshakeable TV ads to YouTube megahits. And this obsession shows no sign of abating - all over the country people are picking up a ukulele and starting to strum, at home, in classes and down at the pub. Schools are even replacing the faithful recorder with a jazzy, inexpensive uke. Famous idlers Gavin Pretor-Pinney and Tom Hodgkinson have spent hours idling away on their ukuleles to produce the ultimate uke handbook: an illustrated guide to its history crossed with a how-to guide and songbook. This is the book that will bring the underground movement into the mainstream. The first half of the book delves into the rich history of this eccentric little instrument, from its birth in Hawaii to its popularity across the world, with a timeline from 1879 to today and a ukulele hall of fame that includes George Formby, Hawaiian legend Israel Kamakawiwo''ole and YouTube ukulele superstar Jake Shimabukuro. Then on to the practicalities: the anatomy of the ukulele, which uke to buy, how to play it, how to strum, pick, read chord charts and tune the strings. Once you know all this, you can get playing the songbook, which includes a wide spread of songs from medieval lays and nursery rhymes to blues and rock ''n roll. Beautiful presentation and tab notation make reading the music easy, even for beginners. With the highest production values, a light touch and an irresistible instrument at centre stage, this book is a must-have for all aspiring Formbys.

Special Interest Model Books The Milling Machine: And Accessories, Choosing
Book SynopsisThis book deals with the process of choosing and using a milling machine and its accessories. In addition to the machine itself, the accessories include the cutters, cutter chucks, workpiece clamps, vices, angle plates, dividing heads, rotary tables, boring heads and other minor items. The content is divided into three main sections. Firstly, it describes what machines and accessories are available and covering each one in detail. The author explains which are essential and which can be obtained when the workshop activity eventually demands one. There are also suggestions on how the equipment chosen should be installed. The usage of each machine and accessory is covered for all but their most complex uses. Typically, using the rotary table and the dividing head are both described to a detail sufficient for the majority of uses that will surface in the home workshop. The third section deals with the actual machining process, covering the choice of the cutter for the task in hand, the speeds to use and how the direction of the feed relative to the cutter rotation is vitally important. A less-understood feature of milling, back cutting, is also explained. The subject of sharpening milling tools is briefly covered and a simple off hand grinder fixture that will bring new life to a used end mill is described.Table of ContentsChoosing the Machine.
