Everyman Chess A Complete Guide to Flank Openings
Book SynopsisTwo great books by Neil McDonald from the Everyman Chess Library, Starting Out the Reti and Starting Out: The English, brought together in one volume. ----- The Réti is a popular opening at all levels of chess. The great advantage it possesses over other openings is that it's a thematic system which can be adopted against many different defences, and because of this it's a firm favourite amongst those who prefer the understanding of ideas over dry memorization of moves. ----- In this book, Grandmaster Neil McDonald examines the Réti by going back to basics, introducing the key moves and ideas, and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them - something that has often been neglected or taken for granted in other works. ----- The English is a sophisticated and popular opening system that is suitable for all types of players and can lead to both positional and tactical middlegames. Many of the world's top players, including Kasparov and Kramnik, include the English in their openings weaponry. ----- In this groundbreaking book, Grandmaster Neil McDonald revisits the basic principles behind the English and its many variations. Throughout this easy-to-read guide the reader is aided by a wealth of notes, tips and warnings from the author, while key strategies, ideas and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated. I love the Jacobean design on the front cover. Inside you will find more flowers – very realistic heartsease pansies, buttercups and a fabulous pumpkin table rug. If you want something seasonal the Nutcracker should fit the bill. At the back of the book, you’ll find out how to do the embroidery stitches. There are also actual-size pattern sheets. This book has great appeal. You can start with the small projects and work up to larger ones if you are new to this craft. Recommended. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *The book is designed to give you amazing projects that are functional, quick to stitch & make wonderful gifts. The book starts with everything you will need to know to make the projects. It goes into detail explaining how to use different methods to get the patterns transferred and how to use them with everything from cutting to the embroidery. I have found the instructions and tips helpful with other projects as well. With each of the projects you are supplied with each of the templates that are required. You are also taken through each of the materials that you will require. You are then taken through the Prework you will need to undertake before sewing the project together. You are then taken through each of the steps. There are also clear pictures to make things easier for you. I especially found this the most helpful. There are projects for autumn and Christmas so you can add them to your house to give it that special look. There are also designs that can be used throughout the year. Some of the projects are rugs, runners and pillows. My most favorite projects are "The Smalls" This include everything from a pincushion to a scissors holder. At the back of the book you have a stitch guide so even if you have never sewn or embroidered you will be able to complete the projects. At the very back is the template sheets. These are easily taken from the book and make the cutting of the fabric easier. The designs in this book are amazing. I think that they are so beautiful. The Nutcracker Penny Rug is my absolute favorite. I may not get mine finished for this Christmas but I can't wait to show it off next year. I love this book, I love the designs and the projects are so special you won't think twice about giving them as gifts to family and friends. I bet your friends and family will be shocked when they realised you have made them. Book SynopsisIs it time to upgrade from the basic tomato? Treat yourself to a new pincushion that’s sure to put a smile on your face! Sew 10 playful patterns from top designers, from 3D shapes to cute little critters. Try out a variety of techniques-like appliqué, embroidery, and piecing-in this value-packed booklet. Perfect for swaps, gifts, and stocking stuffers, these charming pincushions are so quick to sew, you'll want to make them again and again.Trade ReviewIf you sew you probably use a pincushion, but this doesn’t have to be boring. If you have friends or family who sew as well here is a whole book of twelve different projects that are sure to put smiles on the recipients’ faces. They are also fun to make, great ways of using up scraps and are ideal for fundraising. This is a book with projects by several different people and does not have an introduction or a section on techniques of what you need. A certain basic level of sewing knowledge is therefore essential, but if you require a pincushion you should already have enough to proceed! Each project lets you know what you need, gives the finished size, a thumbnail description of the designer and construction, cutting and other instructions in words. There is the odd simple diagram or layout and a page of basic hand embroidery stitches, while at the back are all the patterns helpfully life size. Choose from various variations on the basic cushion-type square including embroidered, log cabin or kaleidoscope patchwork plus pincushions in the shape of a house, ladybug, cupcake, donut, elephant and ant. As this is an American book measurements are in imperial and the stocklist at the back for all the fabric is for US residents, but mostly the fabrics used are fairly plain or generic prints. The detail is in the shaping and decoration, making this a book for using with a vast array of fabrics. This is a fun book of simple projects that is going to appeal to a wide range of stitchers. * myshelf.com *I love this series of books from C & T Publishing. They bring together different designers and create some amazing projects. I love pincushions. I collect them including ones I make so this book is ideal for me. Each of the designers create their own look of project and fill it with their own personality. Using sewing, embroidery and different designs the projects are all different. The pincushions are great fun and the only problem you may have is choosing which one to make first. The patterns have full instructions including diagrams to help you put the pieces together. All the patterns are held in the back of the book and are of a full size. I personally will copy from the book, just to use to create the projects. I'll be making quite a few if not all of the designs. All the designs are great fun and make fantastic pincushions. * Crochet Addict UK *If you are like me and always losing your pins, these projects are fun to make and useful too. Sometimes it is good to have small projects to sew that are finished quickly. There are a variety of 12 different shapes, that even include an ant and they have wide appeal. It's a great selection. You can also adapt the idea and make many more pincushions. For example, the cupcake could be adapted with different colours and embellishments into dozens of pincushions. Various techniques are used to create the pincushions from applique to piecing and embroidery. Each pincushion is designed by a different designer and has appeared in a previous publication. The instructions are clear and the photos are great - this is a fun yet practical book for any sewing enthusiast. * Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *
