  • Take Three Colours: Watercolour Snow Scenes:

Search Press Ltd Take Three Colours: Watercolour Snow Scenes:

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis"There’s no grandstanding or showmanship, just solid, honest instructions and demonstrations that produce solid, worthwhile results." - Artbookreview.net Snow scenes make wonderful subjects for beginner watercolour artists - all you need is the know-how and confidence to give snow depth, sparkle and just the right amount of colour. Popular artist and author Grahame Booth will show you how to achieve beautiful results, using just three brushes, three paints and nine fantastic projects. Starting with a small but perfectly formed tool kit of three brushes, a mixing palette, watercolour paper and three tubes of paint, Grahame guides you step-by-step through nine projects, starting with a simple scene and progressing on to more complex ones. Even if you have never picked up a paintbrush, you will be amazed at what you will achieve by the end of this book. And along the way you will have learnt all the skills you need to start painting wonderful snow scenes of your own.Trade ReviewImagine being able to recreate a wintry landscape, using just three colours. Impossible, you might think by artist Grahame Booth reveals how to do just that in his book Watercolour Snow Scenes. Taking you step-by-step through nine projects, you'll be painting masterpieces in no time. * Crafts Beautiful *Using just three colours, Grahame Booth shows us how to paint snow scenes in watercolour in this new addition to Search Press's Take Three Colours series. The pared-down painting kit keeps everything simple. Grahame leads us through nine step-by-step projects progressing in complexity as we work through them. There's a helpful chapter on how to transfer your drawing to the watercolour paper and plenty of useful tips and advice to give you the confidence to have a go and develop your own snow scenes. * Leisure Painter - December 2020 *If the idea of using colours for snow – even if it is only three – seems like a contradiction read on. Snow, of course, isn't white but takes on the colour of the things that surround it, especially the sky or shadows of building and vegetation. Grahame's message is simplify – look, visualise and interpret. Don't overcomplicate your mixes or fiddle with details and you'll soon find that less – a lot less – really is more. In this easy-to-follow guide, Grahame will guide you through shadows, reflections, hills, trees, water and even a sunset in nine straightforward projects. * SAA *Search Press have become adept at producing series that include books that stand on their own merits rather than simply fitting into pre-defined slots. Much of that is down to having as simple an idea as possible. As a result authors don’t need to go into contortions to get the correct shape and are free to express themselves as they normally do. This makes the whole idea easy to explain to those same authors so that everyone has a clear idea of what’s required. That, of course, is the key to any successful book, but it’s surprising (and rather alarming) how often it gets missed. If everyone’s pulling in different directions, the dog’s sure not to miss out on its dinner. All of which is a preamble to saying that I like this a lot. Snow is as tricky a subject as water: it’s one of those things that isn’t really there. Water relies on reflection, but snow can be even more difficult. No, it’s not just matter of a large tube of titanium white or areas of paper left intentionally blank. Snow doesn’t reflect exactly, and it has an identifiable form in a way that water doesn’t, but it takes its appearance from the light and shade that fall on it. Cue plenty of opportunities for over-complication and far too many colours in the mix. And, as if by magic – 3 colours and 3 brushes. Less is more, simplification is always going to be your friend. As the nights draw in and who knows what precipitation the weather will bring, here’s a guide that will tell you all you need to know. No, not everything – that would be a tall order in just 9 projects – but enough for you to understand what’s happening on your palette, brushes and paper and you didn’t really need more than that, did you? -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Using the colours 8 Using the brushes 9 Projects 10 Snowy Field 10 Snowy Hills 16 Snowy Road 20 Streamside Tree 26 Winter Trees 32 Snowy Sunset 38 Snowy Mountains 46 Winter Cottage 52 Vermont Landscape 58 Transferring a drawing 64

Joanne then demonstrates twenty art techniques for creating a variety of lettering styles using many different tools. She provides you with fifteen basic alphabets, ranging from simple pen-and-ink renditions to increasingly elaborated texts that reference calligraphy, vintage fonts, and doodle art, among other styles. Joanne also teaches you how to turn prosaic lettering into page art itself, merging text into illustration, or ornamenting words with decorative drawings.Trade Review"Great ideas that you can incorporate your own artistic style into. That is what is terrific about this book. She is paving the way for you to explore, and create your own art! If you ever wanted to own a book about lettering for your artwork--this is it. Look no further." --Twisted Sister"There is no lack of visual eye candy in this book. In fact there's not one page in it that doesn't have Joanne's beautiful artwork on it but there's more to this book than just visual inspiration. There's an incredible amount of instruction and encouragement in its pages for the reader to draw upon while learning how to develop their own whimsical lettering style." --SueBleiweiss.com"Joanne's book is at a glance full of eye catching beauty, but as one digs deeper and begins to read, you see how gifted a teacher she is as well as being an uber talented artist. She guides, encourages, and instructs in a way that allows you to experience your own personal growth as you go through the lessons." --PamCarriker.com"At first glance you may think the book isn't related to quiltmaking, but wait! It is! I could hardly contain my excitement when I realized that whimsical lettering is perfect for quilt labels." --Quilt Maker/Quilty Pleasures"The book is divided into sections and the whole thing is just so inspiring and gorgeous to look at. Some sections talk about styling your font, others give ideas for watercoloring or monochromatic designs, and then there's a whole section of alphabet ideas!" --Peneloping.com"This author gives her personal perspective on lettering, offering her favorite tools, how to use them, helpful techniques with step-by-step instructions and illustrations. There are lots of great ideas for lettering and/or calligraphy. It's a nice 'go to' when working on a project." --Crafter's Corner"You don't have to be an artist to play and learn from this super-fun book. Joanne has created amazing fonts and compositions to inspire your inner-artist. She makes artistic alphabets with ink, marker, and watercolor that will inspire you to dig right in and start creating. She also teaches basic collage and bookmaking techniques. Her imagery is very friendly even for a beginner. Listen, everyone can doodle!!!!" --SUCH-Designs"There are so many suggestions in the book that I found it hard to pinpoint particular areas that were the most useful. What I did enjoy seeing was the way the reader is encouraged to have their own simple handwriting notebook for practice and development. There is so much in the book that offers advice like this that there is no doubt that you will finish reading the book bursting with ideas on how to tackle lettering and writing artistically." --Workshop on the Web"This book is a fun and easy way to pump up your lettering. Joanne has a way of adding flair to your writing in a creative way. This book is a must have!" --No Excuses Art with Gina Rossi Armfield
