Shanghai Press Chinese Brush Painting: A Beginner's Step-by-Step
Book SynopsisTry your hands at these historically and culturally important methods, and create some beautiful paintings of your own.Chinese painting is an ancient art that has evolved and become refined over many centuries. Artists brush ink and color pigments onto silk or paper using a variety of techniques, with two main approaches: gongbi a traditional and realistic style based on line drawing, and xieyi style, a freehand method that uses fewer strokes to suggest objects in a less literal way.Painting themes generally fall into three categories: figure, landscaping, and bird-and-flower. Chinese brush painting is mainly presented in lines, shades and white space to express the feelings about nature, social phenomena, and the very essence of the universe. The framework for this expression is often traditional: certain subjects carry cultural connotations that are well-known and imbue the painting with a layer of meaning beyond face value of objects shown. The traditional subjects such as mandarin ducks, butterflies, and the 'Four Gentlemen' (plum blossoms, orchids, bamboos, and chrysanthemum) are examples that contain this rich cultural meaning. Readers will learn first about the tools and materials, then painting techniques. Early pages explore the very basic painting methods and subjects—perfect for beginning painters—but continue to build skills for painting plants and animals of increasing complexity.Chinese Brush Painting illustrates several Chinese brush painting techniques with the use of different tools, brushwork and color mixing. With the step-by-step projects, you can first follow the introductory lessons to learn the necessary skills of brushwork, usage of paper, and characteristics of water, ink and colors; then follow the advanced lessons to learn the compositions and more complicated color applications.

Drawing upon historic literature, material science and industry case studies, topics covered include: a historical overview of traditional mortars; slaking and mixing hot mixed lime mortars; the essentials of pozzolans, aggregates and lime tempering; plasters, lime washes and sheltercoats, and finally, the revival of interest in the use of like-for-like and compatible mortars.

The items are machine sewn with occasional hand-sewn embellishments such as embroidery or buttons. Shore’s instructions are clear enough for beginners to complete the projects successfully. Each project features a large photo of the item in situ plus a list of what you need, finished size and several steps with photographs. New In Chess Winning Quickly with 1.b3 and 1...b6: Odesskys
Book SynopsisI left chess in 2012. I did not touch it for several years. Then I decided to test my strength in Internet blitz. I started from scratch. The board floated before my eyes, and my knee twitched. Less than two months later, I crossed the grandmaster rating mark. My opponents, among them lots of players with a big name, played chess better than me. Surprisingly though, I knew more. On a small island of chess theory, onto which I lured them, I was better equipped. Much better! About 30% of the games ended in wins around the 20th move. A quarter of the games simply ended in mate. In all games, I opened with the moves 1.b3 and 1b6. International Master Ilya Odessky is the worlds leading expert on the 1.b3 and 1b6 chess opening systems. Despite their apparent calm, these openings can get extremely sharp. Now Odessky presents his findings and achievements of recent years. His baffling traps will help you crush your opponents in the opening, with both White and Black. Odessky admits that some of his lines may objectively be somewhat dubious. But in blitz and rapid games they will lead to spectacular play and many surprising wins. Ilya Odessky will entertain, amuse and surprise you in this highly unusual chess opening book full of ultra-romantic chess.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd True Colours: World Masters of Natural Dyes and
Book SynopsisTrue Colors, written by Keith Recker, presents the work and vision of 26 natural dye artists from around the world, opening a window into their culture, their lives, and the power of colour. The artist’s stories are organized by colour and begin with white, traveling through the spectrum to blues, purples, reds, pinks, golds, arriving at varying hues of green. The colours are as extraordinary as the artists themselves: Handmade paper dyed with indigo in Ghana. Rare greens from a fungus-infested plant that grows in the Peruvian jungle. Blues that adorned ancient Briton warriors rediscovered in a Norwich studio. Purples from shellfish collected along the western coast of Mexico. Vivid coral dyes obtained from mushrooms foraged in northern California. New to this paperback edition is a chapter about Heartwear, a collaborative of artists and fashion designers who have created and supported indigo-dyeing projects from Benin to Morocco to India and beyond. Natural pigments aren’t limited to cloth dyeing. They find their way into ceramic tile, glassware, pottery, artists’ paints and pastels, all explored in Recker’s lyrical narrative. Keith Recker is the perfect person to collect and share these timeless stories. His years of global travel, working with artisan groups and individuals as well as connecting them to influential designers in the fashion and interiors industries, put this book right on trend. Gorgeous, carefully curated photography connects the colours to ancient traditions and to the artists. True Colors provides an immersive visual experience and an inspiring travelogue of personal stories and practical information.
