Book SynopsisGolf is one of the most popular games in the world. That is a strange thing to say, since almost all serious golfers actually have a love-hate relationship with it. A good round can bring great joy and satisfaction, while a bad round can end in depression, a binge at the bar, arguments with one's partner and the need for prompt evasive action by the family cat. Although this book is written in a light-hearted manner, it contains a wealth of information about every aspect of the game. Learn about its long and speckled history and some of the quirky characters who have graced the links. It also has some advice on putting and chipping, two parts of the game which cause the occasional golfer frustration, heartache and sore knees after repeated attempts to break the clubs. Failing that you will find a selection of fascinating anecdotes about the game's greats and plenty of intriguing trivia.

Stackpole Books Pattern Weaving Basics for the Handloom

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisPresents the basic steps needed to weave luxurious fabrics on a foot-treadle handloom. This title includes tips and variations for exploring creative weaving ideas. With step-by-step colour photos that show the process, it offers projects for scarves, throws, table sets, runners and blankets.Trade ReviewAutumn 13 Subtitled ‘Basics for the Handloom’ this book is intended as an introduction to four-shaft weaving on a floor loom (although the principles and projects are equally applicable to a table loom). Starting with an introduction to the names and purposes of parts of the loom and accessories, the author takes the reader step-by-step through basic skills from winding the warp, through dressing the loom to starting to weave. The clear and abundant photographs are a definite plus for beginners, and in general I found the combination of text and illustration very easy to understand. I found several instances however where information was provided in later chapters rather than where it would have been most appropriate, indicating the importance of reading the whole book before attempting to wind your first warp and dress the loom. To apply the basic skills learnt in the first part of the book, the author details four projects for the beginner to explore the versatility of their loom through a good variety of techniques in wool, cotton and linen. These range from checked scarves in plain weave and twill, through placemats in Ms and Os, a herringbone blanket involving stitching together narrower lengths and a table set in Bronson Lace. There are many helpful hints throughout which more experienced weavers could find useful, for example a recommendation to include a little extra warp length in each project to weave a notebook sample. On the downside there are several photographs that do not correlate with the text descriptions and could confuse a beginner weaver. Knitters should have some basic skills and should know how to read basic instructions; but beyond this, the projects are relatively easy to put together and, given the directions and photos, nearly foolproof. -- California Bookwatch I admit, I'm a sucker for knitted slippers. They're warm, cozy and so comfy to spend Midwestern winter evenings in, plus they make fabulous gifts. • Stackpole Books Stained Glass Painting Create the Look of Stained

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisStained glass painting is a technique for painting on glass to simulate the look of stained glassno cutting or assembly required.Trade ReviewMay 2015 Always admired stained glass but thought it looked too challenging and expensive to do? Why not cheat a little and paint on the glass instead! You don’t have to invest in lots of tools to create the look of stained glass and you can do it to bring more surfaces to life than just windows. As the author says in the foreword this is a book full of ideas. You just need to buy paints, brushes and something to paint on plus something to prepare the surface. Chapters in the book cover the basics as well as more interesting techniques such as adding glitter, mixing colors and achieving all those fancy textures that you see on glass such as frosting, waves, stencilled patterns and pictures etc. The pictures show remarkably professional work that would make me think it was bought from a glazier. There are twenty five projects in here to make once you know the basics; all shown on a two page selector with thumb nail images. These vary from windows to trays, boxes, ornaments, mirrors and greetings cards. Each project features a large photo of the finished piece plus staged photos and drawings, a list of materials and techniques used (the latter particularly handy). This all makes for some pretty foolproof work and the end results look impressive. Designs include flowers, abstracts, comical, seasonal and even the ubiquitous cupcake. At the back are the full sized patterns as well as lists of Pebeo paints, mixing charts, troubleshooting and even a few blank pages for your own designs. Stackpole also produces a range of pattern books and one of these is Birds of the Beach (ISBN 9780811714716). This book has patterns for twenty birds you are likely to find on a beach, particularly if you live in the US although there are quite a few here also found in the UK. Choose from herring gull, snadpiper, dunlin, sanderling, puffin and more. Each project features a line drawing plus full sized picture of what you hope it is going to look like. There are no other instructions, these are all in the main book. Other titles include other birds, leaves and flowers. * Myshelf.com *Table of ContentsStained glass painting is a technique for painting on glass to simulate the look of stained glass - no cutting or assembly required. This is a book that obligingly stays open when placed on a table, a real plus in any practical primer. Sections at the front on materials and techniques give a good grounding in what you need to know and obtain, and at the back there is an excellent chapter on all the stitches. There are not many of these and include most of the basic ones complete with helpful captions. All the diagrams are large and easy to follow, and there is another chapter on making up and finishing techniques such as mounting for framing, fraying a fringe and the best ways to prepare a stuffed shape for turning. The projects include stockings, hanging ornaments, napkin rings, mats, Nativity figures and tree centrepieces. Several are Scandinavian in style, others have a simple traditional look while things like the felt peppermints and"naughty or nice"picture are contemporary. Patterns are full sized (always a bonus) and each project has exhaustive but easy to follow written instructions, some diagrams and photographs of the finished items in situ. I reckon a beginner could tackle most of the projects without too much trouble, and have a houseful of festive decorations to be proud of. A really user-friendly and beautifully laid out book * Rachel Hyde - Myshelf.com *

  • Folded Paper German Stars Creative Paper Crafting

Stackpole Books Folded Paper German Stars Creative Paper Crafting

Book SynopsisColorful Froebel stars can be used as ornaments, table decorations, candle holders, and more.Trade ReviewJuly 2015 Fröbel star rating: *** I zoomed in on this title because it celebrates the work of Friedrich Fröbel. Fröbel was a 19th century German educationalist and papercraft guru. He brainstormed the concept of kindergarten. He - wait-for it - re-introduced the craft of origami to Japanese schoolchildren. And his papercraft legacy lives on in the celestial contribution of his famous 3-D woven stars – a trad Christmas decoration – and in his folded paper shapes. (The big idea is that paper folding teaches creativity, logical thinking, and improves motor co-ordination.) Back to the review. This is a reprint of German edition. Armin Täubner is a prolific papercraft author, whose delightful Floragami, I have reviewed on this blog. The book begins with a collection of folded modular shapes - kind of the origami equivalent of paper snowflakes. Slight permutations, no two alike. Lots of geek appeal. The “moves” are indicated with step-by-step folding diagrams + text. A winning idea is to fold the shapes in translucent paper to make window decorations. After the basic folded shapes are shown, the author moves on to 3-D constructions. This section is not for origami purists because – shock horror – glue is involved. The resulting spheres are very attractive – and are “cheats” kusudama. The gluing enables an openwork appearance, which is extremely appealing. As you would expect, the Fröbel star section kick-starts with detailed, illustrated how-tos on how to weave the eponymous stars out of strips of paper. The steps are pretty clear – but, if you are like me – you may zone out when things get to about step 28 (and I like learning from books). My suggestion: check out a You Tube video and use it in conjunction with the book. And always bear in mind that the paper weaving steps are repetitive – so there are fewer folding operations than the number of steps. Super-symmetry. Everything is done in quad! When you master the star, you will be very proud of yourself, and you will have added a life-long papercraft skill – and party trick- to your repertoire. The Fröbel star projects are mostly slight permutations – but, hey - you would not be reading this book if you were not a papercraft geek. The comet is a fun idea. Most of the variations involve trimming the tails in some way, or varying the colours of the paper folding strips. A bit obvious. So – this title is a pleasant tribute to the papercraft innovations of Friedrich Fröbel. It is suitable for entry level to intermediate papercrafters. * The Papercraft Post Blog *

Book SynopsisCreate a fun, stylish new wardrobe from tired old pieces and found treasures! Cynthia shows you step-by-step how to take what you have on hand and turn it into unique, eco-friendly fashion.Trade ReviewSomething from nothing is my favourite equation so I was excited to find 50 Nifty Thrifty Upcycled Fashions by Cynthia Anderson, which promises to be a guide to creating a fun, stylish new wardrobe from tired old pieces and found treasures. I have recently re-discovered jumble sales, which appear to be undergoing a resurgence in our locale, so now and then I am able to source garments far more cheaply than even at charity shops or on Ebay. Having a book like this, I thought, would encourage me to buy those too-big but great quality pieces and alter them myself, as the author would show me how to transform any old thing into unique, eco-friendly fashion. However, although the author says readers only need to have basic machine and hand-sewing skills, it does also require a huge amount of confidence and general flair. A lot of projects need you to "draw four arches on the garment with chalk - one centre front, one centre back and one on each side just under the bustline". I really need a diagram to show me exactly what this means before I get the scissors out. In addition, the sewing steps are put together in a paragraph and I need bullet points. Photos or sketches to explain each new technique would have been very helpful. I know Cynthia Anderson is keen for her readers to "think Wabi Sabi, not perfection or mathematical precision" but there is a fine line between "wacky" and "failed". There are good tips for sourcing materials and adding details and embellishments and plenty of colourful ideas for creating one-of-a-kind fashions from different eras on a budget. I would recommend Cynthia Anderon's book to anyone studying textiles or fashion who is skilled with a needle and prepared to throw caution to the wind. Even though upcycling is a penny-pinching, eco-minded hobby, I don't think I'm quite ready for a creative adventure on this scale just yet. * Mumtopia -mumtopia.blogspot.co.uk *

Book SynopsisCowls, infinity scarves, long tube scarves, and neck warmers are fresh, modern takes on the scarf, and you'll want to create them all from this fun and fashion-forward collection for circular needles.Trade ReviewI couldn't wait to get this book. As a new knitter and having just learnt to knit in the round it really excited me. I wasn't disappointed. This book has an amazing group of Twenty Five patterns. It includes infinity scarves, neck warmers, cowls, and double-warm tube scarves. The use of different materials, colours and weights of yarn bring you a diversity of patterns that you are sure to find something that everyone likes. With the temperature getting colder it's an ideal time to purchase this book and make something to keep you warm. It's also brilliant for things to make for Christmas for your family and friends. The book is split into sections. The first one being basic and beautiful. This section uses basic stitches to create some amazing designs. This means that even a knew knitter can have a go on some of the patterns. The other sections are; Lovely Lace, Cables, Twists & Bobbles, Cozy Colourwork, How to Use This Book, Techniques & Stitches. I cannot stress enough that this book is really for every level of knitter. Beginners are covered with the 1st sections and all the instructional guides. Then the designs move on and will keep any level of knitter interested. The designs amaze me how they all look so different. I don't think there is one project that is similar to another. They all have their own personality. I really do love this book. It's one I'll be using time and again. The only big decision is which one to make first.
