Book SynopsisTom was born and raised in Mill Valley, California, on the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais. The rugged scenery of Marin County and Northern California inspired him from an early age to create landscape prints using linoleum and wood, strongly influenced by the traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e style of Hokusai and Hiroshige. He taught in the Humanities Department at San Francisco State University while he worked on a new hand-printed, large-format book, ''The High Sierra of California'' in collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning poet Gary Snyder. The new book was published in a trade edition in 2002 and received a number of awards. In 2008 Tom and Gary published a second collaboration, ''Tamalpais Walking,'' and in 2015 his third collaboration with Snyder and Heyday Books, ''California''s Wild Edge: The Coast in Poetry, History and Prints.'' Killion is currently working on landscape prints including treescapes, coastal and mountain views. His studio is located on Inverness Ridge near Point Reyes, California.

FUEL Publishing Home Made Russia: Post-Soviet Folk Artefacts

    2 in stock

Book Synopsis Each of these objects is personal, and has a personality, a story. In an age of in-built obsolescence there’s something very radical in that. - Owen Hatherley, Tribune magazine The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has led to widespread sanctions being imposed on Russia. As the effects of these measures begin to take hold, the lives of ordinary Russian people will be subject to the type of austerity they last endured over 30 years ago, following the collapse of the USSR. A reprinted edition of the highly popular book from 2006. Home Made Russia features over 220 artefacts of Soviet culture, each accompanied by a photograph of the creator, their story of how the object came about, its function and the materials used to create it. The Vladimir Arkhipov collection includes hundreds of objects created with often idiosyncratic functional qualities, made for use both inside and outside the home, such as a tiny bathtub plug carefully fashioned from a boot heel; a back massager made from an old wooden abacus; a road sign used as a street cleaner’s shovel; and a doormat made from beer bottle tops. Home Made Russia presents a unique picture of a critical period of transition, as the Soviet regime crumbled, but was yet to be replaced with a new system. Each of these objects is a window, not only into the life of its creator, but also the situation of the country at this time. Shortages in stores were commonplace, while wages might be paid in goods, or simply not paid at all. These exceptional circumstances lent themselves to a singular type of ingenuity, respectfully documented in intimate detail by Vladimir Arkhipov.

Simply stitched includes 20 beautiful embroidery motifs, plus project and instructions. Use these stunning designs to create accessories clothing and home decor. * Sewing World *July 2016 What a beautiful book this is. It totally inspires you to get hand stitchin. With 20 contemporary designs, all beautifully photographed, you'll want to make them all! We particularly like the Spring flower bag, Forest tea cosy and the Garden Pillow. The stitched motifs and finished projects are shown at the front of the book in full colour, with the instructions, stitch guides, and templates at the back. This book would be an amazing present, but each of the projects would make a beautiful gift. Suitable for all levels of embroiderer. * Love to Make *Beautiful, amazing, gorgeous! There are so many words that I could use to describe this book. I love the fact that it has gone back to designs from the past and brought them back in a way that makes it up to date. The book starts with the most amazing pictures of each of the motifs and how they can be used. Once you have ooed and awed at the pictures you are taken through the steps of making the beautiful items. First it talks you through materials and tools, then moving onto techniques and how to start and finish stitches. Then you move onto the instructions. The instructions take you through everything you will need to know to make each of the projects. These include diagrams and pictures. The also include the motifs and what stitches you will need to use. I think the pictures and designs speak for themselves. They are exquisite! This book would be amazing as a present but each of the projects would make something special for someone. * Crochet Addict UK *Yumiko was inspired to try combining wool thread with the more usual cotton embroidery floss and, delighted with the results, now presents this beautiful book. A generous selection of motifs together with suggested projects are gloriously illustrated in colour. Comprehensive instructions, including lists of all materials required to replicate the projects, are given together with full-size trace-off designs. An inspiring book for both the new embroiderer and for those with some experience. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *Traditional embroidery is reinvented for modern makers. Combine cotton and wool thread to create embroidery for beginners. The book inclujdes 20 motifs and instructions for accessories, home decore and clothing for all skill levels. * Machine Knitting Monthly *This book has embroidery motifs and projects with wool and cotton thread and is stitched on linen. It will be enjoyed by a complete beginner or experienced stitcher that likes a modern contemporary twist. Yumiko only uses 6 embroidery stitches: satin stitch, chain stitch, straight stitch, outline stitch, lazy daisy stitch and French knots. Yumiko uses DMC cotton embroidery floss and stitches on linen fabric. She was inspired when working on large scale and found that wool thread needed fewer stitches but gave great volume to her work. She then introduced the cotton floss and now combines the two in her work. She gives full details on how to make and embroider a belt, clutch bag, needle case, pouches and much more. Her motifs can be added to existing items for example hats, sweaters, and tote bags. -- Sally Wilkinson * The SEW Region Magazine - Book Threads *

Lucky Spool Media By the Bundle: Turn Precuts into Patchwork with

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNo quilter can resist a stack of beautifully co-ordinated fabrics all neatly folded into a bundle and tied with a bow. As more fabric stores specialise in combining and marketing their own custom bundles of fat quarters, it leaves many quilters with just a ‘taste’ of many fabrics in the form of these 18 x 22’’ cuts (called fat quarters) but not really enough to make an entire quilt out of. Emma, a former fabric shop owner in Australia herself, inspires quilters to create one of her 12 quilts specifically designed to showcase these fabulous cuts whether they are from a single fabric collection or a complementary combination of many fabric lines. Emma’s patterns cross over beautifully between the modern and the new traditional quilt maker alike.Trade ReviewYou fell for the fabric and bought the bundle and it’s sitting on the shelf. Occasionally you dream about what to make, you take it down and smile at the colours and patterns, you even fondle the bundle, and then put it back on the shelf. Untie it and unleash it with this fabulous book. Create 12 quilts with pre-cuts. I don’t have 12 pre-cuts – should I buy more? These fat-quarter friendly projects will help you de-stash, or send you running to the quilt shop for more. The book explains what a fat quarter is, and then gets straight into the projects. The photography is breath-taking. The contemporary designs will speak volumes to the modern woman and quilt artist. The ideas are mainly geometric and colourful. Some of them could even be mix and match taking a row from several designs. I love Nellie Gray for its mix of white, grey and yellow. Star Burst is out of this world. All the designs are very handsome and desirable. You get block size and quilt size; materials, cutting and assembling with photos and diagrams and at least two photos of the finished quilt. At the back of the book, there’s how to finish everything off and templates. Recommended. * Yarns and Fabrics *A brilliant book that inspires you to use the collections of fat quarters you have. Emma's use of design is beautiful. The designs are clean and bright and inspiring. I love her use of colours and prints. I love the fact that she can use busy prints but by using calm and bright colours she makes a quilt that stands out. I think the book is designed for quilters that are used to following patterns to create amazing designs. The designs use everything from basic squares to more complicated shapes. This means that each quilter will find a quilt to produce at their level. I think the book would be fantastic to expand your skills. You could work your way through the book and expand your skills as you go. There are clear instructions with pictures and diagrams to support you. I can honestly say there isn't a quilt within the book that I wouldn't like to make. I love Emma's bundle of tips at the back of the book. They are so useful and easy to digest. It's brilliant when crafters pass on their hints and tips as it makes life so much easier for us newbies. There are 12 different projects packed into this book. Each of them uses different fabric with different designs and different uses of shapes in the quilts. You will be amazed how different fat quarters and shapes can create some amazing designs. http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/2016/10/by-bundle-lucky-spool-media-book-review.html * Crochet Addict UK *

  • Quilting with Liberty Fabrics: 15 Quilts

Lucky Spool Media Quilting with Liberty Fabrics: 15 Quilts

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFollow Jenni Smith as she's granted rare access to the Liberty design studio and historic archives, and celebrate the iconic designs that have made Liberty London one of the world's most iconic fabric manufacturers. Liberty London opened in 1875 and has been producing exquisite fabrics and designs for over 140 years. In this book there are 15 projects with a complete fabric design history of Liberty as well as a full colour reference index for every fabric used. Featuring beautiful details of the classic fabric designs produced over the years, each quilt will inspire readers to finally cut into those precious bits of fabric and begin enjoying them in pieced projects of their very own. The hardback book comes in a gorgeous hardcover textured linen slipcase in beautiful Liberty fabric. It's an ideal gift for anyone who is a fan of Liberty or British design. This is the first quilting book to be an official partnership with Liberty.Trade ReviewThis book is a ‘celebration of my passion for Liberty Fabrics,’ with their ‘iconic prints’ and ‘soft texture’ writes the author Jenni Smith, they are ‘cherished friends’. Indeed, Liberty fabrics have been inspiring sewers to create everything from high fashion to household textiles for the last 140 years. I myself have a nostalgia for the scraps of past Liberty prints that I keep in my fabric stash, far too precious to cut into. Included in the book is a chapter detailing the history of liberty fabrics and what makes their design unique. The Liberty company has an archive of 50,000 prints, and it is these that its team of designers use as their source of inspiration when they begin their initial drawings and paintings for a new collection of fabric. Liberty are specialists in printing onto fabric, beginning as they did, when the company was founded, with block printing and later moving on to screen printing and digital printing, as technology evolved. They are world renowned for their print quality and attention to detail, especially given the size, intricacy and delicacy of some of their floral patterns. The small section in the book explaining about the base cloth, details the difference between the famous Tana Lawn fabric with its soft texture and Lasenby fabric, a more substantial 100% cotton, which is perfect for patchwork and quilting. It also explains the name origins of these two fabrics and gives an insight into why stroking Tana Lawn, is a favourite pastime amongst fans of this material. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the 15 patchwork and quilting projects that readers can make. The designs utilize a variety of sewing techniques including appliqué, English Paper Piecing, Foundation Paper Piecing and sewing curves. Each project is accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams which include material yardages, how to sew the individual quilt blocks, and how to assemble the blocks into the finished piece. The projects are mostly designed to be machine sewn but hand piecing is an option, and 2 projects are designed to be hand sewn and portable. However, what makes this book unique is its adherence to the exclusive use of Liberty Fabrics, for the design and execution of each of the 15 projects. For me, the inclusion of an index of swatches of the Liberty Fabrics used, including a close-up photograph of the design, and details of its unique name and code, was a complete delight. From the very beginning, my own patchwork and quilting story was nurtured by my love for these wonderful fabrics and with this book I have been inspired to revisit them. -- Lis Tate * The Quilter's Guild *Celebrating 145 years of gorgeous floral prints, author Jenni Smith delves into the history behind the iconic designs that have made Liberty London such a household name. You'll be walked through one decade at a time, with 15 luxurious quilt projects showcasing differe3nt trends and styles from across the years. There is also a full colour reference for all the fabrics used, so you can recreate the projects that inspire you most. * Sew magazine - December 2020 *Liberty, the iconic department store located behind London's Regent Street, has an extensive archive of about 50,000 patterns and its in-house design studio, founded in 1952, continues to create iconic textile designs today, all printed on the finest cloth. Smith was granted rare access to both the studio and archives, and the result is 15 projects with a complete fabric design history of Liberty, as well as a full colour reference index for every fabric used. Reflecting the brand's pedigree, the book is a special object in its own right too, arriving in its own linen slipcase and illustrated throughout with beautiful photography. * Embroidery Magazine *
