    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile terrestrial archaeology has engaged with contemporary philosophy, maritime archaeology has remained in comparative disciplinary – or subdisciplinary – isolation. However, the issues that humans face in the Anthropocene – from global warming to global pandemics – call for transdisciplinary cooperation, and for thinking together beyond the confines of the human-centered philosophical tradition. Growing areas such as the “blue humanities” and “oceanic thinking” draw directly on our maritime past, even as they ponder the future. Theoretically engaged maritime archaeologists could contribute significantly to these areas of thought, as this volume demonstrates. The essays collected here serve as jumping off point, which opens new ways for maritime archaeologists to engage with the most important problems of our time and to benefit from the new insights offered by object-oriented and flat ontologies. The book gathers the analytical thinking of archaeologists, philosophers, marine biologists, and media theorists, and pushes those observations deep into the maritime realm. The contributions then branch out, like tentacles or corals, reaching into the lessons of oil spills, cephalopod hideouts, shipwreck literature, ruined monuments, and beached plastics. The volume concludes with a series of critical responses to these papers, which pushes the dialogue into new areas of inquiry. Taken as a whole, the volume emphasizes that the study of the past is more relevant than ever because serious consideration of our watery world and all its inhabitants is increasingly necessary for our collective survival. This volume takes the first steps toward this reckoning and, as such, it promises to be an important new contribution to lecture and conference halls around the world where oceans and the Anthropocene are under study.Table of ContentsPrelude: A History of Maritime Archaeological Thought Peter B. • The Southern Fault Line

Oxford University Press Inc The Southern Fault Line

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA highly original reinterpretation of how race and class shaped the entirety of Southern history through the experience of four interconnected family lines. The Southern Fault Line explores the under-appreciated division in the South between the oligarchic rule of plantation owners and industrialists on the one hand, and the more democratic mindset of the mountain-dwelling small farmers on the other. These two mindsets were in continual tension from the 1800s to the 1960s, when the adherents of the more democratic side of the struggle capitulated to the oligarchical side in response to the Civil Rights movement.Bryan Jones draws from his own family''s centuries-old history in the region to explore the rise and fall of the two minds of the South. Through a comparison of the experiences of a slaveholding line in his family with three non-slaveholding lines, Jones provides a rich history of the politics of both class and race in the region from the Founding era to the present. The slaveholding side of his family settled in Black Belt Alabama, while ancestral members of the other side of his family were poorer uplanders. In the 1890s, the latter supported the burgeoning populist movement, which for a short window of time tried to unite poor Blacks and poor whites against the patrician planter class and industrialists. After a series of close elections, the planter class was able to stanch the populist tide. They did this in large part by sowing racial division among populism''s supporters. Indeed, one of Jones'' ancestors helped draft the 1901 Alabama constitution that made Jim Crow the law of the state. Throughout, Jones shows how deep the political differences were between the two regions, with oligarchy characterizing the slaveholding region and a more democratic ethos shaping the non-slaveholding areas. Jones serves as the final observer, a white boy observing not only the demise of the Jim Crow South, but--in the wake of the Civil Rights movement--the demise of the mountain democratic South as well. Today, the vast majority of Southern whites regardless of class support an oligarchical Republican Party.

Both scholars and a broader public with interests in solidarity and political mobilizations will warmly welcome Stites Mor's insightful contributions to our understandings of solidarity." - Marc Becker, author of Twentieth-Century Latin American Revolutions "Stites Mor's expertise has established her as a leading authority on histories of Latin America, solidarity, human rights and culture. This book builds on her work, positioning the region in a global context and offering new conceptual frameworks to theorize solidarity, its practices, results, and legacies. This exciting and ambitious contribution is a pleasure to read." - Tanya Harmer, author of Beatriz Allende: A Revolutionary Life in Cold War Latin America "Offers major contributions to several interconnected fields. . . . With this book Stites Mor joins the best of transnational historians in pushing traditional boundaries and expanding our understanding of the complex realities in our interconnected world. • Islanders: The Making of the Mediterranean

Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd Islanders: The Making of the Mediterranean

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAccompanying an exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, this book explores island identities in the ancient Mediterranean, questioning how ‘insularity’– being of an island – affected and shaped art production and creativity, architectural evolution, migrations and movement of people. It extends beyond the ancient, incorporating current discourses on island versus mainland cultural identities, in contemporary Art and other disciplines.Throughout history, islands have been treated as distinct places, unlike mainland and continental masses. In geographic terms, islands are merely pieces of land surrounded by water, but the perception of island life has never been neutral. Rather, the term ‘insularity’ – belonging to/being of an island – has been romanticized and associated with otherness. Islands have often been deemed to have differenthistories from the mainland and with more readily isolated socio-political, cultural and economic characteristics. Yet connectivity has also been an important feature of island life as the sea can be a linking rather than just a dividing body, motivating and maintaining informal and formal connections.Fifty unique archaeological objects – most never displayed before outside Cyprus, Crete and Sardinia – tell exceptional stories of insular identity, over a period of 4000 years. The movement of people and episodes of migration between islands and their surrounding mainlands is also explored, through architecture, material culture, crafts and technologies present in the Mediterranean islands.Islanders has a broad diachronic scope and applies integrative analytical approach, bringing together research findings from scientific fields within archaeology, as well as a multi-scalar approach to past human interaction within continental and island environments.Trade ReviewAs this new exhibition at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum shows, [the Mediterranean islands] were remarkably open to outside influence – to foreign materials, skills, fashions and legends. * The Week *

  • The Whiskey Sour

The University Press of Kentucky The Whiskey Sour

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCertain cocktails carry societal connotations and cultural meaning. Some drinks are regional symbols such as the mint julep, which is inextricably tied to the Kentucky Derby. Classic drinks like the old fashioned or the Manhattan tend to denote a more sophisticated or refined palate, whereas wine coolers and tropical cocktails are often associated with new or inexperienced drinkers. Enter the whiskey sour. A cocktail from the sour family, the iconic drink is usually made with bourbon whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar. While its ingredients seem strikingly similar to an old fashioned, the whiskey sour''s reputation is far less revered, and in certain circles, maligned for its sweetness. The Whiskey Sour elevates the reputation of the classic cocktail by exploring its rich history starting in the 1600s with punch, the predecessor to sours, and bringing the reader through to the twentieth century when the whiskey sour was well-established. Seasoned mixologists and new cocktail enthusiasts will be educated about the development of the traditional recipe and encouraged to make their own creations by incorporating modern riffs, syrup additions, and fun enhancements. Part historical narrative, part recipe book, this friendly and approachable guide challenges the stigma surrounding the cocktail as a drink for unrefined tastes and illustrates the elegant, romantic, and complex facets of the whiskey soura perfectly sweet, tart, and balanced cocktail.

Book SynopsisFor ambitious late antique homeowners seeking to demonstrate their status and taste, water and its display offered almost infinite possibilities. Water Displays in Domestic Spaces across the Late Roman West: Cultivating Living Buildings presents the first synthesis of the archaeological evidence for late antique water features in both urban houses and extra-urban villas across the western Empire. Ginny Wheeler examines a wide and varied range of examples: from decorative basins and pools to fountains of all forms to water-equipped dining couches. Through careful analysis and evocative reconstruction of the water displays in their diverse contexts, this book explores how they were incorporated into late antique residences, the different ways that they enhanced domestic spaces, and the potential motives behind their insertion. To assess the great efforts to which homeowners, particularly in urban settings, went to ensure their installation and continued operation, one case study focuses on the best-preserved cityscape of Ostia. While the roles of water features ranged from practical to aesthetic, to social and symbolic, this book highlights their previously under-considered contributions to thermal comfort and sensory experience through in-depth analyses of two Iberian villas. Wheeler identifies broad patterns and regional distinctions in form and decor before reflecting on the multifaceted significance of water in the domestic sphere, informed by literary, epigraphic, and iconographic sources. Beyond contributing to the ongoing debate over fountains' utility versus aesthetics, this research offers new insights into the organization of life at household and neighborhood levels, the social relations between homeowners occasioned by water installations, and the understanding and application of environmental design in Antiquity.

Book SynopsisIn the beginning, the story goes, two gods conjured the islands out of primordial chaos with the tip of a sacred spear. The ?Great Eight-Island Country?, Japan has always followed its own unique path, often alone through centuries of deliberate isolation. Contact and conflict with other nations has often taken the form of flashpoints of social and technological shock: firearms, trade ships electric light and atom bombs. Yet despite the challenges that have beset it from outside and from within, Japan has maintained and expanded its singular and compelling culture for thousands of years. Today, Japan is a key player on the world stage, a technological powerhouse, and an icon of non-aggressive international policy. Stone Bridge Press Family Crests of Japan

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBold, iconic designs have been used to symbolize family names in Japan from the time of the court nobles in the twelfth century. The sense of "family" has changed in modern Japan, but the crests' high-contrast motifs and simple geometries are right at home in our logo-emblazoned age, even as the designs express old cultural interests and ideals: cherry blossoms, well buckets, floating clouds. This book contains over 850 family crests (kamon) with descriptions, cultural backgrounds, and a selection of photographs showing how crests are used on banners, signs, and buildings. Of special interest to graphic designers, quilt-makers, and illustrators.

  • My Korea Traditional Flavors Modern Recipes

WW Norton & Co My Korea Traditional Flavors Modern Recipes

Book SynopsisThe long-awaited debut cookbook from a Michelin-star chef.Trade Review"When social distancing is a thing of the past and I don’t have to check what tier I’m in, I’d like to host a gimjang – a traditional Korean kimchi making event. Making chef Hooni Kim’s napa cabbage kimchi on my own was almost meditative – carefully massaging the cabbage leaves with his gochugaru (Korean red chilli flakes) marinade – but would have been even better with friends and a few of his Korean pear cocktails. This is food to share – braised beef shins slowly cooked with garlic and ginger and dashi or warm tofu with kimchi and pork belly stir-fry – and Kim, chef behind the first Michelin-starred Korean restaurant in the world, is the perfect guide." -- The Cookbooks of 2020 You Need - The Independent"It’s easy to fall in love the second you hit the condiments page, and that’s before you even get to his [Hooni Kim's] recipes for spicy raw blue crabs, spicy braised chicken, soy-poached black cod with daikon and bibimbap with beef tartare. This is some seriously exciting food." -- Our Top 3 Not To Be Missed... - Glasgow Evening Times

Book SynopsisA rabbi’s lifelong journey to discover the source and inspiration of Hasidism. As a student of Abraham Joshua Heschel’s at Jewish Theological Seminary sixty years ago, Burt Jacobson was moved to devote his life to the study of Israel Baal Shem Tov—the founder of Hasidism. Heschel considered the Baal Shem the greatest Jewish teacher and communal leader of the last 1,000 years. Living in the Presence: A Personal Quest for the Baal Shem Tov is a wide-ranging portrait, revealing numerous facets of the Baal Shem Tov’s biography and revolutionary thought previously unknown. Through his knowledge of the world’s wisdom traditions, and personal journey, Rabbi Jacobson is able to place the Baal Shem in the company of the great world spiritual teachers. He reveals the Baal Shem’s vision as an ecstatic mystical encounter that opened to the transcendent unity of existence. It was this that inspired his love and compassion for all creation, especially for the people he met. His disciples testified that their experience of these truths transformed how they understood their own identities as manifestations of the Divine, altered how they lived as spiritual leaders of their communities, and laid the foundations for Hasidism as a movement. Throughout his book Jacobson presents and evaluates insights of historians and scholars, but it is also filled with personal stories about Jacobson’s own struggle with his Jewish identity and his encounter with the Baal Shem as his spiritual teacher. Both a tour de force and a labor of love, this book will quickly become the most essential work on the subject ever published in English.

  • Crisis and Ontological Insecurity: Serbia’s

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Crisis and Ontological Insecurity: Serbia’s

Book SynopsisThis book develops a novel way of thinking about crises in world politics. By building on ontological security theory, this work conceptualises critical situations as radical disjunctions that challenge the ability of collective agents to ‘go on’. These ontological crises bring into the realm of discursive consciousness four fundamental questions related to existence, finitude, relations and autobiography. In times of crisis, collective agents such as states are particularly attached to their ontic spaces, or spatial extensions of the self that cause collective identities to appear more firm and continuous. These theoretical arguments are illustrated in a case study looking at Serbia’s anxiety over the secession of Kosovo. The author argues that Serbia’s seemingly irrational and self-harming policy vis-à-vis Kosovo can be understood as a form of ontological self-help. It is a rational pursuit of biographical continuity and a healthy sense of self in the face of an ontological crisis triggered by the secession of a province that has been constructed as the ontic space of the Serbian nation since the late 19th century. Trade Review“This book is essential reading for social scientists with a particular interest in Kosovo and Southeastern Europe, as well as for political scientists in international relations. It is also crucial for policy-makers … . Ejdus presents valuable insights into the Serbian politics of avoidance … . It is to be hoped that the book will also inspire international policy-makers to reflect more consciously upon their own politics of avoidance when it comes to the status of Kosovo.” (Pieter Troch, Comparative Southeast European Studies, Vol. 69 (2-3), 2021)Table of Contents1. Book Synopsis Winner of the 2021/2022 People's Book Prize Best Achievement Award Homes can be both comforting and troubling places. This timely book proposes a new understanding of Florence Nightingale’s experiences of domestic life and how ideas of home influenced her writings and pioneering work. From her childhood homes in Derbyshire and Hampshire, she visited the poor sick in their cottages. As a young woman, feeling imprisoned at home, she broke free to become a woman of action, bringing home comforts to the soldiers in the Crimean War and advising the British population on the home front how to create healthier, contagion-free homes. Later, she created Nightingale Homes for nursing trainees and acted as mother-in-chief to her extended family of nurses. These efforts, inspired by her Christian faith and training in human care from religious houses, led to major changes in professional nursing and public health, as Nightingale strove for homely, compassionate care in Britain and around the world. Shedid most of this work from her bed after contracting the debilitating illness, brucellosis, in the Crimea, turning her various private homes into offices and ‘households of faith’. In the year of the bicentenary of her birth, she remains as relevant as ever, achieving an astonishing cultural afterlife.Trade Review“Florence Nightingale at Home makes a strong case for renewed attention to Nightingale’s career as a nursing pioneer and as an imperial sanitary reformer. … The book … demonstrates the importance of the notion of domesticity for rethinking and rescaling analyses of social bodies, nations, empires … ecologies.” (Richard Bonfiglio, Victorian Studies, Vol. 65 (1), 2022)“The depth of research is admirable: this book draws on materials within the Nightingale family archive and is also the first major study to be able to use all sixteen volumes of Lynn McDonald’s Collected Works of Florence Nightingale … . This book is a valuable read for scholars of Nightingale and those working more broadly on the history of medicine and Victorian domesticity, as well as the public with an interest in this famous historical figure.” (Charlotte Wilson, BAVS Newsletter, Vol. 23 (2), 2023)“This latest book on Nightingale makes an insightful contribution to the existing literature on the world’s most well-known nurse, being the first to explore her domestic experiences and how the theme of home influenced her writings and work.” (David Stewart, nottinghamnursinghistory.wordpress.com, July 7, 2021)“Part of the pleasure in reading this thoughtful and well-executed collaborative work is the way in which the received narrative boundaries have been dissolved. … For any student of Nightingale, or of gender and health in the nineteenth century, the authors offer a wonderfully detailed discussion of the past 40 years of scholarship assembled along the lines of home and domesticity.” (Sioban Nelson, Social History of Medicine, March 12, 2021)Table of Contents1. • From Broke To Brexit: Britain’s Lost Decade

Springer Nature Switzerland AG From Broke To Brexit: Britain’s Lost Decade

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPerhaps the most extraordinary period in modern British history, the years between the Great Recession and Brexit have often been dubbed ‘the lost decade’ because of the economic and political turmoil caused by those two great events. Michael Burton outlines how the first led to the second, assisted by a rare confluence of other, often unrelated, social and political factors that delivered the shock Leave verdict in the EU referendum of 2016. These included the longstanding grievances of voters in former industrial areas feeling left behind by globalism, stagnant incomes after the recession, austerity, the rise of social media, the refugee and Eurozone crisis in Europe, the deep split in the Conservative and Labour parties over the EU and rising wealth inequalities. The author also charts the chaotic political landscape that ended in the final Brexit deal. This book is ideal for the general reader as well as for students of politics, history and economics needing a concise and well-explained account of this turbulent period in British history.Table of ContentsIntroductionThis will briefly outline the book, explaining as above why the decade was so momentous and why the recession, austerity economics and Brexit are all linked.Chapter one: Britain in the depths of the Great RecessionThis chapter sets the scene in 2009/2010 outlining the undercurrent tensions in British society even before the recession such as income inequalities, generational divides, immigration, regional disparities, globalism, which were later to become starkly apparent during the next decade.Chapter two: austerity BritainThis chapter looks at the Cameron government’s austerity policies and considers their impact and whether they were necessary. Chapter three: the great dividesThe recession exposed great divisions within UK society, between prosperous London and the poorer outlying regions, between wealthy homeowners in London and young people struggling to get on the property ladder in the capital, between the baby boomers and Generation X. The Cameron government initiated ‘the Northern Powerhouse’ to drive growth to poorer regions but it was in the secondary cities, the Rotherhams, Barnsleys and Blackburns where local economies were weakest and where welfare cuts as part of austerity as a result had the greatest impact.Chapter four: the rise of the far rightThis chapter looks at attitudes to the EU within the UK and at the rise of immigration as a political issue following the big influx of EU workers in the mid to late 2000s. It then examines the rise of UKIP and how, in response to its polling success, David Cameron responded with his fateful decision to hold a referendum on the EU which led to Brexit.Chapter five: interregnum: Olympic UKThis chapter looks at a year, 2012, which appeared to tell the world that the UK was a cosmopolitan, multi-racial, open-minded society, in contrast to the message sent out by the referendum result four years later. The chapter covers the London Olympics, the sense of optimism which it briefly generated and the impact on the public mood, symbolized by internationalist London Mayor Boris Johnson. Chapter six: the disruptersThis chapter looks at one of the features of the lost decade, the rise of social media which disrupted established media providers and led to the rise of ‘fake news’ when it came to election coverage and public perceptions of controversial political issues. Politicians on the fringes were able to bypass traditional media and appeal directly to the public without the intervening firewall of informed commentary. The EU referendum campaign would ultimately be won through social media.Chapter seven: foreign quarrelsThis chapter looks at how international issues impacted on the UK, primarily from the rise of Isis in the Middle East and its attraction for some young Muslim males in the UK, the fall of Gadaffi in Libya, and the Syrian civil war and consequent refugee crisis. These all contributed to a rise of xenophobia reflected in growing support for UKIP. By the time of the EU referendum refugees from the Middle East and Africa, asylum seekers, homegrown Islamic terrorists and EU working immigrants were all conflated by unscrupulous politicians into a single threat that would boost the Leave vote.Chapter eight: Cameron makes historyThis chapter covers the 2015 general election and examines the impact of the recession on the public and on the public finances and at the socio-economic challenges Cameron now faced. It also covers the 2014 Scottish referendum which should have been a wake-up call to the possibility that a EU referendum could end in Leave.Chapter nine: headlong into BrexitThis chapter looks at the eventful year following the 2015 election. It covers the referendum campaign and the poll itself, Cameron’s resignation, the election of Theresa May, Corbyn’s own post-referendum troubles with his Shadow Cabinet and the start of the Brexit process. In particular it considers the reasons why the country – to the shock of the political class – voted Leave and examines the socio-economic profile of the Remainers and Leavers that exposed the deep divide in the country. Chapter ten: capitalism in crisisThis chapter looks at the disastrous general election campaign which saw May lose her majority and Corbyn emerge as the unlikely hero of Labour, cementing its leftwards march. Political commentators attributed much of his electoral success to young voters, furious about the Brexit result and at the government’s austerity. In a sign of post-referendum confusion, the middle classes tended to vote Labour while working class voters – mainly Leavers – backed the Conservatives. The elections also saw the disappearance of UKIP.Chapter eleven: party loyalties under pressureThis chapter looks at the negotiations for a Brexit deal during 2018 and early 2019 and the way Brexit broke traditional party loyalties among Labour and Conservatives. This chapter will cover the negotiations up to when (or if) the UK leaves the EU.Conclusion:This summarises the key undercurrents of the decade and sees Brexit and its impact on the UK body politic as the expression of underlying socio-economic changes in Britain.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisExploring the rise and fall of global power from the mid-nineteenth century, this book tracks the long and interrelated trajectories of the most serious challenges facing the world today. Although at first the urgency of the coronavirus outbreak in 2020 seemed to take precedence over other global problems such as socioeconomic inequality and climate change, it has ultimately exacerbated these issues and created opportunities to address them boldly and innovatively. A Brief History of Now provides a bird’s-eye view of world hegemony, economic globalization and political regimes as they have evolved and developed over the last two hundred years, providing context and insights into the forces which have shaped the Western world. Presented in an accessible and engaging narrative, the book addresses key contemporary challenges and explores the repercussions of a technological revolution, the potential instability of democracy over the coming years, and the urgent struggle to tackle climate change. With his book, Diego Olstein helps to answer pressing questions about our world today and provides a roadmap for analysing future trajectories.Table of Contents

Book SynopsisBeginning with the intriguing case of Herod the Great's Jewishness, this title discusses what made or did not make Jewish identity during the period, the question of conversion, the prohibition of intermarriage, matrilineal descent, and the place of the convert in the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds.Trade Review"I cannot begin to do justice to the nuances and wealth of information that these articles offer. Cohen possesses an enviable gift of being provocative and challenging... He opens the door to the rewarding realm of the internal life of one community. And as unrepresentative as this community may, at first, appear, no scholar interested in issues of identity, self-definition, core and periphery, community and law, family, class and gender in antiquity can afford to give Cohen a miss." - Hagith Sivan, Bryn Mawr Classical Review "One of the greatest strengths of Cohen's erudite book is that he is willing to acknowledge that many parts of his argument are open to challenge. While some might be overwhelmed by the sheer volume, this reviewer thinks he has done a great service in collecting an immense amount of relevant data, allowing readers to weigh the evidence for themselves and draw their own conclusions... Cohen's book is the most comprehensive study to date on the question of Jewish identity in antiquity." - J. S.
