  • Heritage under Socialism: Preservation in Eastern

Berghahn Books Heritage under Socialism: Preservation in Eastern

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis How was heritage understood and implemented in European socialist states after World War II? By exploring national and regional specificities within the broader context of internationalization, this volume enriches the conceptual, methodological and empirical scope of heritage studies through a series of fascinating case studies. Its transnational approach highlights the socialist world’s diverse interpretations of heritage and the ways in which they have shaped the trajectories of present-day preservation practices.Trade Review “The introduction nicely summarizes the general issues that distinguish this work from other post-socialist heritage studies in the region. Importantly, this volume takes socialist approaches to heritage seriously rather than seeing socialism as a past best forgotten…Recommended” • Choice “The chapters collected together in this volume offer valuable insights into the diverse and complex field of cultural heritage studies in Eastern and Central Europe… Due to the sheer variety of themes, methodologies and approaches, the book constitutes an important contribution not only for heritage studies scholars, but also for Cold War historians, and specialists in Eastern European, Soviet as well as transnational and global cultural history.” • Heritage & Society “Looking into the nuances of the socialist heritage definition is one of the major values of this volume. The papers convincingly demonstrate that heritage experts addressed issues similar to their colleagues outside the Iron Curtain and were parts of a global discourse contributing to the theoretical and practical processes that took the field where it is today…Specialists in heritage studies dedicated to decolonizing the academic discourse will find the contributions inspiring. The volume, however, also offers a new insight into the cultural and political history of the region through analyzing the heritage domain.” • Austrian History Yearbook “This coherent, well-conceived book presents a wide range of issues through a selection of interesting cases. Its focus on the Central and Eastern Europe region is an important addition to the wider discussion concerning the geopolitics of knowledge.” • Magdalena Banaszkiewicz, Jagiellonian UniversityTable of Contents List of Illustrations Acknowledgements Introduction: Heritage Under Socialism: Trajectories of Preserving the Tangible Past in Postwar Eastern and Central Europe Corinne Geering and Paul Vickers Part I: Transfers and Exchanges in Heritage Policies and Practices Chapter 1. • The Herero Genocide: War, Emotion, and Extreme

Berghahn Books The Herero Genocide: War, Emotion, and Extreme

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis Drawing on previously inaccessible and overlooked archival sources, The Herero Genocide undertakes a groundbreaking investigation into the war between colonizer and colonized in what was formerly German South-West Africa and is today the nation of Namibia. In addition to its eye-opening depictions of the starvation, disease, mass captivity, and other atrocities suffered by the Herero, it reaches surprising conclusions about the nature of imperial dominion, showing how the colonial state’s genocidal posture arose from its own inherent weakness and military failures. The result is an indispensable account of a genocide that has been neglected for too long.Trade Review “The author impressively demonstrates that emotions can be the driving force behind cruelty and is able to portray the brutalization of ordinary soldiers, who ultimately also became ‘motor[s] of extermination,’ more clearly than previous studies have done. Fear, bitterness, and frustration in the face of military failures led to violence…Häussler’s work is an innovative, at times brilliant study that deserves a wide readership – hopefully, and thanks to the translation, now also in English-speaking countries.” • Central European History Praise for the German edition: “Matthias Häussler has produced a complex and highly compelling account of the unfolding of mass violence in German South-West Africa. His book includes a range of sources which other historians have largely neglected … or been unable to access.” • Journal of Namibian Studies “Häussler deals less with the causes of violence or possible racist program of extermination than with the conditions, factors and dynamics of a radicalization that ultimately led to genocide. In his differentiated analysis he is aided by a profound knowledge of the sources, materials from state, church and private archives in Germany.” • Historische Zeitschrift “This book was overdue. [… Häussler] successfully endeavors to expand the collection of sources on the history of this genocide, drawing not only on German administrative files but also on British traditions and a large number of private estates” • Militärgeschichtliche Zeitschrift “This study encourages further research on the relationship between emotion, racism, and the release of violence and is recommended to all those who are interested in processes of unrestricted violence in general or the war in German South West Africa in particular.” • H-Soz-Kult “Häussler shines with an innovative study …The book is recommended not only to all those who are committed to dealing appropriately with the Namibian-German past, but also to those who are directly involved in the ongoing bilateral negotiations between Germany and Namibia.” • The NamibianTable of Contents Preface Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter 1. • A More Democratic Community

Berghahn Books A More Democratic Community

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe histories of European unification and of West European democracy during the second half of the twentieth century have often been considered as separate or even antagonistic processes with the institutions of European integration being regarded as bastions of bureaucratic rule.A More Democratic Communitychallenges this assumption and argues that European integration benefited from the democratic accountability of member states while contributing to the validation of national democratic institutions. However, it also unveils a paradox: as integration deepened, it diminished the power of national parliaments, sparking a democratic accountability crisis within the Community.

    Berghahn Books Critical Public Archaeology

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCritical approaches to public archaeology have been in use since the 1980s, however only recently have archaeologists begun using critical theory in conjunction with public archaeology to challenge dominant narratives of the past. This volume brings together current work on the theory and practice of critical public archaeology from Europe and the United States to illustrate the ways that implementing critical approaches can introduce new understandings of the past and reveal new insights on the present. Contributors to this volume explore public perceptions of museum interpretations as well as public archaeology projects related to changing perceptions of immigration, the working classes, and race.

This comprehensive survey by three expert historians focuses on these victims of repression and persecution as well as the structure of the Vienna Gestapo and the perpetrators of its crimes.

Book SynopsisHow can we study the impact of rules on the lives of past people using archaeological evidence? To answer this question, Archaeologies of Rules and Regulation presents case studies drawn from across Europe and the United States. Covering areas as diverse as the use of space in a nineteenth-century U.S. Army camp, the deposition of waste in medieval towns, the experiences of Swedish migrants to North America, the relationship between people and animals in Anglo-Saxon England, these case studies explore the use of archaeological evidence in understanding the relationship between rules, lived experience, and social identity.

Book SynopsisSynthesizes Welsh history of science during the long eighteenth century.‘A World of New Ideas’: 1650–1820 is a series of two volumes revealing the often-forgotten contributions made by Welsh scientists to the scientific history of the long eighteenth century. The first volume—The Isles—centers on the contribution made in Wales particularly, but also includes England, Scotland, and Ireland. By presenting a synthesis of published material and original research in three sections (Theory, Practice, and Results), its chapters examine how Welsh contributions fit into the history of science developed from the quasi-magical worlds of alchemy and early chemistry, through the advent of Cartesian and Newtonian science, to the world of technological innovation and industrial development.

  • Heirs to the Princes

University of Wales Press Heirs to the Princes

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis ground-breaking study explores the rise of a Welsh elite of administrators and military figures in the generations after the Edwardian Conquests of 127788. It shows how a ministerial aristocracy had developed in the Age of the Princes, before the Edwardian conquest threatened to impose English colonial administrations throughout the land. However, close documentary analysis reveals that Edward I (d.1307) emerged in his later life not as the vindictive conqueror of most accounts, but as a ruler dependent on Welsh support, ready to listen to and remedy Welsh grievances, and to encourage the revival of a Welsh governing class. In addition, the book includes the first detailed study of scores of members of that class throughout Wales in the first half of the fourteenth century. It concludes by exploring the mid-century crises that shook the Welsh establishment and set them on the road to the Glyn Dwr rising of 1400.

  • Padstow

    The History Press Ltd Padstow

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThrough the study of archaeological evidence, Padstow can trace its history back almost 5,000 years. In 520AD, St Petroc, according to legend, landed from Ireland on the North Cornish coast and chose a site on a hill to build his monastery. In the medieval period, the port was importing goods from Ireland and the Mediterranean and exporting slate, copper, tin and fish. Shipbuilding was an important industry in the early nineteenth century and, when the railway arrived in 1899, this marked the beginning of tourists visiting Padstow. The town remains a working fishing port and the spectacular views of the Camel estuary, the attractive harbour, narrow winding lanes, old cottages and the beautiful ancient church add to its charm. The Padstonians are a close-knit community, some families having lived there for generations. They all ensure that Padstow's traditions will be kept alive for many years into the future.

Book SynopsisThe book tells of the great battles, fought upon Northumbrian soil, which changed the course not just of regional, but of national history. The writer accompanies the reader along a timeline of events, a journey through 1600 years of Northumbrian history, from the Roman Invasion to the English Civil War.Inspired in part by the journals and collections of Victorian historians and antiquarians, the book recalls not only the clashing armour of England and Scotland but also the random acts of casual, everyday violence, affecting individuals whose names, unfamiliar today, have almost been lost to history. These, together with the ravages of the Black Death and the cruelties of religious persecution across Northumbria, complete the story of its bloody history.

Book SynopsisJoseph Harris, elder brother of the methodist preacher Howell Harris, made important contributions to the sciences and public life of Great Britain in the eighteenth century. A protégé of Edmond Halley and an apprentice to globe and mapmakers, Harris made a lasting impression on some of the most illustrious scientists of his day, contributing to our understanding of astronomy, longitude, navigation, instrument making and optics. And, as assay master at the Royal Mint, he influenced the standardisation of weights and measures, and became a confident of politicians, Prime Ministers and Chancellors of the Exchequer. His essays on our monetary system still impact on political structures today. Remarkably, Harris also found time to make astronomical observations and teach navigational techniques for the Royal Society, and in 1761 was the only man in Wales to record the Transit of Venus.

  • Equinox Publishing Ltd Life on the Farm in Late Medieval Jerusalem

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisStudies of Jerusalem in the post-classical periods have traditionally centered, unsurprisingly, on the Old City, isolating it from the regional setting in which it operated on a daily basis. The agricultural hinterland of Jerusalem - comprising a network of smaller settlements, agricultural terraces, fields, cisterns, watch towers, and local marketplaces that together fed the city - have not been a focus of archaeological research until very recently. Life on the Farm in Late Medieval Jerusalem offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of a single rural household and its intimate, but ever-evolving, relationship with Jerusalem from the 14th through the early 20th centuries. It does so through a tightly integrated, multi-disciplinary study of the astonishingly well-preserved remains of a village in its agricultural setting, showing how both settlement and farmland developed together over time, and how these changes impacted the socio-economic development of Jerusalem during the Mamluk and Ottoman Sultanates. The life history of this place is thus written on the basis of archaeological, botanical, and geological data, all interpreted against a rich textual record of land sales, field development, conflict, and cooperation.

University of Wales Press Emlyn Hooson and the Welsh Liberal Party 19621979

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis study presents an analysis of the Welsh Liberal Party under the leadership of Emlyn Hooson. It begins with an overview of the period prior to Hooson's 1962 by-election win in Montgomery, following the death of Clement Davies, and the first section describes Hooson's leadership of the Liberal Party of Wales, his recognition that the organisation was fundamentally flawed and that it needed to be reorganised. The solution was a root and branch reorganisation and the formation of a new state party, which would be federated to the British Liberal Party but separate in its functions and leadership. The second section details Hooson's steering of the party through chapters on the organisation, policy formation and the electoral record. The book comprises the first in-depth description of the Welsh Liberal Party during a tumultuous time in Welsh politics; recognising how current Welsh political historiography has sidelined the Welsh Liberals in favour of Plaid Cymru and Labour, it re-evaluates the Liberals' position during the period and Hooson's role.
