  • Dive Palau: The Shipwrecks

Whittles Publishing Dive Palau: The Shipwrecks

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRecounted with his usual level of meticulous historical research, Rod weaves an easily readable account of the build-up to and implementation of Operation Desecrate 1 - the raid undertaken to destroy Japanese ships and aircraft in the lagoons of Palau. He uses his intimate knowledge of shipwrecks to reveal in glorious detail each of the 20 major Japanese WWII shipwrecks lying at the bottom of the Palauan lagoons today. On 30th March, 1944 Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters made an Initial fighter sweep of the lagoon to destroy Japanese air cover. Simultaneously Grumman Avenger torpedo-bombers dropped mines and successive group strikes of torpedo bombers and dive-bombers sank the shipping and destroyed the airfields. Palau was neutralised as a Japanese naval and air base in a repeat of the same Task Force 58 raid, Operation Hailstone, on Truk Lagoon 1,000 miles to the east just six weeks earlier. A number of long-lost wrecks have recently been relocated including a Japanese freighter filled with depth charges and Army helmets. This was found in 1989 but remained unidentified until now - after painstaking research Rod reveals her identify for the first time in the book. Each wreck is covered in detail and is supported by underwater photography and by fabulous illustrations by renowned artist Rob Ward. The shipwrecks of Palau are now revealed.Trade Review'Each of the main wrecks is supported by carefully researched recording of the vessel's history and final demise, together with excellent colour photographs, artist's illustrations and the essential details needed to support a dive. So if you are heading for a dive holiday there, lucky you, and you will need to take this book with you'. Warship World -------------------- 'Rod Macdonald's books are always eagerly awaited, and it is the level of detail that wreck-dive enthusiasts relish. His latest offering Dive Palau: The Shipwrecks, is no exception. ...sits perfectly alongside Dive Truk Lagoon. ...I enjoyed this easy-to-read book from cover to cover, but it would work equally well to dip into for reference'. Diver -------------------- '...a rather magnificent coverage of an action taken on 30 March 1944 in WWII on the island of Palau. ... He has managed in such books to admirably blend a combination of historical research, capable writing, and excellent illustrations. These works add a new dimension to understanding their subject matter, and should be considered well beyond the concepts of "dive books." Highly recommended'. Australian Naval Institute -------------------- 'Indispensable guide to wreck diving in this remote Pacific atoll. ...this is as near a definitive wreck diving guide as you'll ever read. ...the level of technical research in this book is breathtaking. Details such as when an attack was launched, the weight of explosive charge used or the exact power output of a Zero fighter. It's dizzying. ...a phenomenal record. ...brings an almost forgotten piece of war history firmly to life, and knowing exactly what happened in Palau - and why - would add an important new dimension to diving there. If you have an expedition planned, read Rod's book before you go'. British Diver -------------------- 'Diver Rod Macdonald became intrigued by the ship [Helmet Wreck] while researching his latest book Dive Palau - The Shipwrecks, which catalogues a series of wrecks found in the waters around the small Micronesian nation and the history of how they got there'. The Herald -------------------- '...the ideal resource for wreck divers to discover Palau in a different way. ...well-written, so you do not have to struggle through difficult texts and you will be glued to the text until the minute'. Duiken -------------------- `…displays his breadth of knowledge of the numerous ship and plane wrecks scattered around the theatre of the Pacific. … this is a well-researched and readable volume, which present a soundly considered introduction for those interested in World War II history. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of Palau’s history and the Pacific conflict, or the archaeology of deep-water warship sites’. Book SynopsisAn exploration of phrases and excerpts that inspire a major contemporary artist. Over the past several years, renowned South African artist William Kentridge has made a collection of particular phrases and sentences that have called out to him from the pages of whatever he has been reading. And these phrases, which he has written into a studio notebook titled Words, have been put to work in many of his artistic projects. Kentridge has often begun a project by paging through the notebook, waiting for a phrase to claim its place in the new work. The text excerpts come from many sources: Aimé Césaire, Yehuda Amichai, Sigmund Freud, James Joyce, Setswana proverbs, the Book of Ecclesiastes, Tristan Tzara’s Dada Manifesto, and a range of eastern European poets. This volume presents a selection made from the notebook, with phrases arranged neither randomly nor with a clear agenda but finding a space in between. Cleverly designed by the artist and beautifully produced, Words is a thought-provoking collection that provides a window to the mind of a contemporary creative genius. Table of ContentsN

Table of ContentsDUE PAROLE PER UN INVITO ALLA LETTURA – Prof. Stefano Moscadelli ; SPRING ARCHAEOLOGY 2020: DAL CONVEGNO IN PRESENZA AL CONVEGNO ONLINE – Andrea Bellotti, Luca Luppino, Maria Messineo, Mickey Scarcella ; Sezione I: Archeologia e Nuove Tecnologie ; INTRODUZIONE – Giulio Poggi ; Papers ; DOCUMENTARE I MONUMENTI IN ARCHEOLOGIA: IL CASO DI VILLA SAN MARCO A CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA (NA) – Dario Saggese ; L’IDENTITÀ NEL FRAMMENTO: RICONOSCIMENTO DEL TAXON ATTRAVERSO L’IMPRONTA PEPTIDICA NEL SITO ANTICO E MEDIO OLOCENICO DI TAKARKORI (LIBIA) – Martina Di Matteo, Francesca Alhaique, Wim Van Neer, Savino di Lernia ; LA DOMUS IN PIAZZA. • Caithness Archaeology: Aspects of Prehistory

Whittles Publishing Caithness Archaeology: Aspects of Prehistory

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCaithness, the most northerly county in mainland Britain, is one of the richest cultural landscapes in Europe. The relative geographical isolation of the area, traditional landholding and the survival of large estates, combined with the use of flagstone as the main building material since earliest times, has ensured the survival of a wide range of monuments in a profusion unequalled elsewhere in Scotland. In the 19th century, Caithness was at the forefront of archaeological endeavours with many sites central to our understanding of Scottish prehistory. Since then, despite intermittent activity, the archaeology of Caithness has become somewhat marginalized and there is a perception that there are only a handful of archaeological sites for visitors to enjoy and the archaeologist to uncover and interpret. However, the county is full of hidden riches and traces of the past are visible everywhere. Caithness is dominated by landscapes rich in archaeological remains of all periods; chambered cairns, stone settings, brochs, Pictish settlements, wags, castles, harbours and post-medieval settlement, amongst many others. The authors have presented a cross section of these monument types in an attempt to re-centre the county in archaeological and early historical narratives. For the last decade, the authors have been involved in a range of heritage projects in the county, thus allowing them time to discover, observe and consider its archaeology. Their peregrinations provided opportunities for deeper contemplation of the county's archaeology, the result of which is presented in some new interpretations and perspectives which convey the excitement of working on heritage in Caithness.Trade Review`...a pioneering one for the archaeology of Caithness... Am Bratach -------------------- '...gives Caithness archaeology a deserved spotlight. ...provides an in-depth discussion of prehistory and archaeological research in this isolated part of Britain... This in-depth understanding...makes the book particularly valuable... This excellent discussion of Caithness' archaeology is supported with a wealth of illustrations... ...the book is a splendid presentation and discussion of well-selected aspects of the prehistoric and early historic archaeology of Caithness...highly recommended to anyone interested not only in Caithness, but Scottish prehistory in general... Hopefully this publication will raise awareness about the richness and significance heritage of Caithness...' The Megalithic Portal -------------------- '...this beautifully produced and fascinating book... ...their book is an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to find out more. Anyone living in the area, and especially anyone travelling north...should read this book. You will be intrigued and inspired, and more than a little wiser'. SAS Bulletin -------------------- '...an engaging, readable and well-produced volume that highlights the heritage of an unfairly neglected region'. British Archaeology -------------------- `...the book's richest sessions draw on the authors' work (including experimental) on the architecture of Neolithic chambered cairns and their re-excavations at a notable cluster of Iron Age brochs around Keiss. ... an engaging presentation'. Book SynopsisThe ancient Maya used mainly stone tools, made of either ground stone and chipped stone, to achieve their extraordinary development. However, works focused on this aspect are still rare. This book presents the techno-typological analysis of lithic materials from La Blanca, a Mayan archaeological site located in the heart of the Southern Lowlands, which was mainly inhabited during the Late Classic and Terminal Classic periods. In addition, a general methodology for the techno-typological analysis and classification of Mayan lithic artefacts is presented, which is complemented by an extensive graphic section that includes the technical drawings of most of the chipped stone tools.Table of ContentsÍndice ; Índice de figuras ; Índice de gráficas ; Agradecimientos ; Capítulo 1. Archaeopress The Early Iron Age Metal Hoard from the Al Khawd

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNumerous metallic artefacts, which anciently were deposited in a hoard, came to light per chance on the campus of the Sultan Qaboos University in Al Khawd, Sultanate of Oman. Mostly fashioned from copper, these arrowheads, axes/adzes, bangles, daggers, knives, socketed lance/ spearheads, metal vessels, razors, rings, swords, and tweezers compare well with numerous documented artefact classes from south-eastern Arabia assigned to the Early Iron Age (1200–300 BCE). Discussion of the international trade between ancient Makan, Dilmun, and Mesopotamia during the 3rd millennium BCE dominates the archaeological literature about Arabia archaeology. The Al Khawd hoard and its contemporaries lend weight to the suggestion that 1st millennium BCE Qadē (the name of south-eastern Arabia at that time) was even more important than Bronze Age Makan in terms of the copper trade volume. A reassessment shows the Early Iron Age by no means to be a dark age, but rather an innovative, successful adaptive period characterised by evident population growth.Table of Contents1. Foreword ; 2. Book SynopsisThe story of Leith-built ships continues in this third volume from just after the conclusion of World War Two to 1965. However, the world was different; the men came back from the front and those women who had been working in the shipyards lost their jobs. All shipyards were experiencing full order books, replacing, or repairing ships lost or damaged in the conflict, but the industry was changing albeit slowly at first. The advent of electric welding would eventually change the way ships were built leading to the demise of the Rivet Squad, which was replaced as a cost cutting exercise as it became the accepted method of ship construction. Henry Robb Shipyard participated in the massive new shipbuilding programme with a great many vessels being ordered from two of the largest customers of the yard. Many orders came from the giant Ellerman Lines, while a great many more were ordered by other customers, such as the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand. The Admiralty also remained a customer and a few large supply ships would be built in this time. In this volume the author has not forgotten the people who were the very fabric of the yard and community. Personal accounts are included from those who built or sailed on these vessels. This is the story of a mighty industry, but one which nonetheless had begun its decline. In the century from 1893, this nation went from producing 80% of all the worlds' commercial ships to producing no commercial ships at all. It is a sad fact, but this volume keeps alive the story of the Leith-built ships and the vibrant industry that once existed.

Book SynopsisSurvey tra Fiumi, Pianure e Colline analyses the territory of Santa Croce di Magliano in the province of Campobasso, Molise, Italy and studies all its archaeological aspects in order to understand patterns of occupation of the human groups that have inhabited it and how they, through the evolution of social interactions, have received extraterritorial influences. It maintains a focus on this small area of the lower Molise in the wider regional context of the Frentano state. This study has been able to contribute further evidence to support attempts to explain the interactions between the Samnite cultures located north of the Fortore river and those located south of the same river, characterised by a Daunian culture (at least until the sixth century BC). It also highlights the evolution of settlement types over the centuries. Furthermore it has been also possible to highlight how the types of settlement have evolved over the centuries, up to the current urban form of the village considered in this study.

Table of ContentsVorwort 1 Einleitung – Conrad Schmidt ; 2 Der Fundort Al-Khashbah – Conrad Schmidt & Stephanie Döpper ; 3 Methodik – Conrad Schmidt & Stephanie Döpper ; 4 Die Vermessungsarbeiten und der Luftbildsurvey – Matthias Lang & Philippe Kluge ; 5 Die geophysikalische Prospektion – Marion Scheiblecker, Jason T. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisA revealing picture of a time when Britain was losing its empire. It draws on letters written at the period by an airman, his vivid memories and experiences from the Canal Zone, Kenya during Mau Mau times, Cyprus and Jerusalem. His time encompassed conducting church services, being shipwrecked, numerous wildlife encounters and the formation of many lifelong friendships. The Canal Zone was no easy life and 50 years later a medal was awarded when the government was forced to admit it was deserved and to confess its own political chicanery in the events. Hamish paints a picture of the highs and lows of RAF life, a station being run down in Egypt, working in oppressive heat and now and then being shot at! He saw the Windrush a week before it exploded and sank in the Mediterranean; both the Windrush story and that of building the Suez Canal are detailed in an appendix. There is much to find in this story including background histories to events and the politics of the time. As a whole it provides a fascinating account of the era.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Family of Pa-di-Amun-neb-nesut-tawy from Thebes (TT 414) revisited provides fresh material about the identity of one of the key figures of the family that reused the Saite tomb of Ankh-Hor (TT 414) in the Asasif from the 4th century BCE onwards. It is the woman Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu, who was previously listed in the genealogical register of TT 414 as Pa-di-Amun-neb-nesut-tawy’s daughter and wife of one of his sons, Hor. By examining objects found by the agents of the consuls in the 19th century CE and those found by the Austrian mission in the 1970s in TT 414 and in wider Theban contexts, the authors are able to identify Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu, wife of Hor, as another, until now overlooked individual, separate from his sister with the same name. The examination of the funerary assemblage of Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu and of objects belonging to her husband, daughter and sons reveals not only details of Late Dynastic and Ptolemaic burial customs in Thebes but also additional information on the priesthood of Khonsu and of the sacred baboons in this era. This new identification of a previously overlooked person, the mistress of the house and daughter of the first prophet of Amun, Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu (G108 + G137), demonstrates that the finds from TT 414 are still far from being processed in their totality. This material has the potential to provide answers to some of the open questions regarding Late Dynastic/Ptolemaic Thebes and to contextualise funerary assemblages.Table of ContentsPreface ; Acknowledgements ; Prologue ; Chapter 1: Introduction ; Chapter 2: The case study of Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu (G108 + G137) ; Chapter 3: Secondary sources related to the family of Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu (G108+G137) ; Doc. 1 Striding statue of Hor presenting an offering table ; Doc. 2 The situla of Hor ; Doc. 3 The funerary stela of Nes-Khonsu ; Doc. 4 The stela of Pa-di-Amun-neb-nesut-tawy II (London, BM, EA 8462) ; Doc. 5 Fragments of the qrsw-coffin of Pa-di-Amun-neb-nesut-tawy II (London, British Museum, EA 6945, 6946) ; Doc. 6 The wooden stela of Wesir-wer (Turin, Museo Egizio, P 3610) ; Doc. 7 Striding statue of Djed-her (Cairo, Egyptian Museum, JE 37357) ; Doc. 8 Funerary papyri of Djed-her ; Doc. 9 The canopic chest of Djed-her (EA 8537) ; Doc. 10 Book of the Dead papyrus (Turin, Museo Egizio di Torino, cat. no. 1830) ; Doc. 11 Funerary papyri of Pa-kher-Khonsu ; Doc. 12 Book of the Dead Papyrus of Pa-kher-Khonsu (Turin, Museo Egizio di Torino, cat. no. 1832) ; Doc. 13 Cuboid statue of Pa-kher-Khonsu (Cairo, Egyptian Museum, JE 38592) ; Doc. 14 Mummy bandages of Ta-sherit-Min (Paris, Louvre, AF 11954 (X. 25) +11956 (X. 24) + E 18865 + 27459) ; Chapter 4: Primary sources for the family of Kalutj/Nes-Khonsu (G108 + G137) from TT 414 ; Doc. 15 Coffin assemblage of Hor (Reg. Book SynopsisArchaeologies and Antiquaries collects and republishes 14 key academic works by the late Professor Dai Morgan Evans FSA (1944–2017), whose career spanned the civil service, learned societies, charitable organisations and the academy. His research focused on the archaeology of Wales and England. Spanning early medieval archaeology and history, the management and conservation of ancient monuments, histories of antiquarianism, and the Welsh church of Llangar, the chapters have been reformatted, freshly edited and published together for the first time with new illustrations. Together, the studies provide still-pertinent and insightful investigations, here contextualised by a multi-authored introduction surveying Dai’s career and contributions to archaeology and its public understanding.Table of ContentsDai Morgan Evans: A life in archaeology – Howard Williams, Chris Musson, Christopher Young, Rosemary Cramp, Adrian James and Sheena Evans ; The origins of Powys – Christian, heretic or pagan? ; Irish influence in post-Roman mid-Wales ; An early Christian monument from Llanwyddelan, Montgomeryshire ; Legacy hunting and Welsh identities ; ‘King Arthur’ and Cadbury Castle, Somerset ; Eighteenth-century descriptions of the Cerne Abbas Giant ; Et in Arcadia? Book SynopsisThe American military presence in Scotland during the Cold War was greater than in either of the World Wars, bringing with it the largest peace-time number of foreign military personnel in Scotland’s history. This military power was delivered by individuals – the forgotten heroes. They worked to high standards of professionalism and most had no true concept of the danger they faced from the Soviet threat. This reality was only ever confronted during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The author, a former Cold War special forces officer, brings his personal expertise into play, examining this intriguing story by reaching out to more than one hundred veterans and expert witnesses. Their contributions cover the nitty-gritty end of history, not high-end diplomacy. This fast-moving account of their endeavours, often in long working conditions, highlights the value of teamwork, training and determination. It is clear that Scotland would have been a Soviet target of necessity once the American bases were established. Scotland was of great importance to the United States during the Cold War and this research shows that, for more than thirty years, Scotland was the capstone in Washington’s early Cold War strategy. Scotland was an active centre of US strategic operations and the vital importance of its geographic position is clearly demonstrated as each location is examined, and its benefits listed. There were six significant bases, the most important being America’s only nuclear-armed submarine squadron in the Holy Loch. He details the operations which were carried out by the large radio spy stations (SIGINT) at Kirknewton, Thurso and Edzell. And he reveals for the first time America’s most bizarre intelligence gathering activity of the early Cold War, which also took place in Scotland. Overall, this book provides an important addition to the conventional US/UK Cold War narrative. The United States desperately needed the assistance Scotland provided and the author presents a convincing narrative that Scotland was at the epicentre of the Cold War’s most terrifying episode – the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kennedy’s success was greatly assisted by these Scottish bases which provided him with the firepower and intelligence to outwit Khrushchev. One section of the book deals with the visit of JFK’s top advisor to Holy Loch – a story that has never been revealed before. It emphasises the simple fact that Scotland’s role was a game changer. An interesting theme throughout the book is the espionage effort mounted by the KGB against these bases. The author has interviewed senior intelligence officers and their input is revealing. These were exciting times for the young Americans who crossed the ocean to serve their country and this is their Cold War story.

Book SynopsisPottery from the University of California, Berkeley Excavations in the Area of the Maški Gate (MG22), Nineveh, 1989-1990 presents the pottery from the UC Berkeley excavations in 1989 and 1990. Nineveh is one of the longest occupied cities in the world, with a record of habitation extending back to at least the middle of the 7th millennium BC, continuing in an almost uninterrupted sequence through today. It was one of the major urban centres in which the fundamental features of modern civilization first emerged. Its political and religious significance – particularly during its apogee as the capital of the Assyrian Empire in the late 8th and 7th centuries BC – secured its status as a legendary metropolis in history and literature. In 1987, the University of California at Berkeley initiated a program of archaeological investigations at Nineveh. The expedition aimed to elucidate the character and layout of the city’s urban neighbourhoods; an aspect of Assyrian urbanism that had received little close attention in prior excavations. Near the Maški Gate (MG22), the UC Berkeley team uncovered a district of large dwellings and wide streets. Multiple layers of occupation and rebuilding suggest the area was occupied during the period when the city was handsomely embellished and enlarged by the Assyrian monarch, king Sennacherib (705/704-681 BC). The work in MG22 provides a stratigraphic history of Late Assyrian ceramics at the centre of the empire through at least the 7th century BC.Table of ContentsPreface ; Chapter 1. Book SynopsisThe Past as Digital Playground: Archaeology, Virtual Reality, and Video Games collects the contributions to a two-day conference which illustrate a digital project developed at the Archaeological and Technological Park of Poggibonsi (Siena, Tuscany), where Virtual Reality and an educational video game are being used to enhance the archaeological content deriving from the excavation of the medieval site. In recent decades, digital technologies have pervaded every aspect of the production of archaeological knowledge, from data collection to analysis and interpretation, to interaction with the public. The increasing convenience of 3D and interactive technologies has led to a proliferation of digital tools (VR, AR, mobile applications) used to communicate the past in a more engaging way, offering the public an experience that takes place largely outside of the traditional channels. Alongside the experience at Poggibonsi, the book also gathers important contributions originating from other Italian and international case studies in the fields of digital technologies applied to archaeological heritage.Table of ContentsIndice ; Introduzione – Stefano Bertoldi, Samanta Mariotti ; (Re)living Vindolanda: Designing Educational Computer Games for Outdoor Environments – Barbara Birley, Richard Davison, Claire Stocks ; Virtual Neapolis. Book SynopsisThe Wider Island of Pelops explores the myriad ways in which pottery was created, utilized, and experienced in the prehistoric Aegean, across a period of more than 4000 years between the Middle Neolithic and the Early Iron Age transition. Pottery is capable both of creating bonds and creating barriers. It serves as a sociocultural call and response, marking similarity and difference, collectivism and individualism, knowledge, and the absence of knowledge. Contextually-bound, it embodies identities, memories and multiple histories. It reflects choice and reinforces orthodoxy; a product of change, and a driver of it, that both creates and curates understanding of the world. Necessity and commodity, at times anachronistic, and at others, avant-garde, it is subversive and slavish, innovative and derivative; visible always, and never without value. The seventeen papers collected here provide a diachronic perspective on the value of pottery in marking and mediating cross-scale sociocultural discourse; in framing and facilitating the transmission of knowledge and meaning; in driving economies; in the preservation of memory, in the practice of cult; and, in more recent times, as a vector in the dialogue of imperialism: at once introducing key themes in the study of Aegean pottery, and providing a snapshot of recent archaeological work in Greece.Table of ContentsPreface ; Professor Christopher Mee (1950-2013) ; The Late-Final Neolithic and Early Helladic I Pottery from Midea in the Argolid: Continuity and Change – Eva Alram-Stern, Clare Burke, Katie Demakopoulou, and Peter M. Eight excavation areas and a watching brief were undertaken. The proximity of the River Nene and at least four palaeochannels formed the dominant natural landscape features. This dynamic environment affected settlement and land use throughout prehistoric and Roman periods.Seventeen pits, largely in small groups, were identified containing early Neolithic to late Neolithic/early Bronze Age pottery. Some of these features were located within the area of the palaeochannels. Later, of especial interest was a notable collection of eleven different late Bronze Age to early Iron Age pit alignments, which were part of a co-axial landscape over an area of 2.5km. There was also a small area of domestic activity reflected by pits dating to the early Iron Age as well as two large watering holes in other locations. The pi

Book SynopsisIn 2016, a small protest encampment at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota, initially established to block construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline, grew to be the largest Indigenous protest movement in the twenty-first century, attracting tens of thousands of Indigenous and non-Native allies from around the world. Its slogan "Mni Wiconi"-Water is Life-was about more than just a pipeline. Water Protectors knew this battle for Native sovereignty had already been fought many times before, and that, even after the encampment was gone, their anti-colonial struggle would continue. In Our History is the Future, Nick Estes traces traditions of Indigenous resistance leading to the #NoDAPL movement from the days of the Missouri River trading forts through the Indian Wars, the Pick-Sloan dams, the American Indian Movement, and the campaign for Indigenous rights at the United Nations. While a historian by trade, Estes also draws on observations from the encampments and from growing up as a citizen of the Oceti Sakowin (the Nation of the Seven Council Fires), making Our History is the Future at once a work of history, a personal story, and a manifesto.Trade ReviewA touching and necessary manifesto and history featuring firsthand accounts of the recent Indigenous uprising against powerful oil companies...With an urgent voice, Estes reminds us that the greed of private corporations must never be allowed to endanger the health of the majority. An important read about Indigenous protesters fighting to protect their ancestral land and uphold their historic values of clean land and water for all humans. * Kirkus Reviews *A powerful blend of personal and historical narrative. A major contribution. -- Naomi Klein, author of This Changes EverythingEmbedded in the centuries-long struggle for Indigenous liberation resides our best hope for a safe and just future for everyone on this planet. Few events embody that truth as clearly as the resistance at Standing Rock, and the many deep currents that converged there. In this powerful blend of personal and historical narrative, Nick Estes skillfully weaves together transformative stories of resistance from these front lines, never losing sight of their enormous stakes. A major contribution. -- Naomi Klein, author of This Changes EverythingReading Our History is the Future is like standing in the middle of camp again. During the Standing Rock uprising, we witnessed what our ancestors always prayed for-making their dreams a reality. -- Bobbi Jean Three Legs, leader of the Standing Rock Youth RunnersIn Our History is the Future historian Nick Estes tells a spellbinding story of the 10 month Indigenous resistance at Standing Rock in 2016, animating the lives and characters of the leaders and organizers, emphasizing the powerful leadership of the women. Alone this would be a brilliant analysis of one of the most significant social movements of this century. But embedded in the story and inseparable from it is the centuries long history of the Oceti Sakowin' resistance to United States' genocidal wars and colonial institutions. And woven into these entwined stories of Indigenous resistance is the true history of the United States as a colonialist state and a global history of European colonialism. This book is a jewel-history and analysis that reads like the best poetry-certain to be a classic work as well as a study guide for continued and accelerated resistance. -- Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz, author of An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United StatesWhen state violence against peaceful protest at Standing Rock became part of the national consciousness, many noticed Native people for the first time -- again. Our History is necessary reading, documenting how Native resistance is met with settler erasure: an outcome shaped by land, resources, and the juggernaut of capitalism. Estes has written a powerful history of Seven Fires resolve that demonstrates how Standing Rock is the outcome of history and the beginning of the future. -- Louise Erdrich, author of the National Book Award winner The Round HouseA touching and necessary manifesto and history featuring firsthand accounts of the recent Indigenous uprising against powerful oil companies...With an urgent voice, Estes reminds us that the greed of private corporations must never be allowed to endanger the health of the majority. An important read about Indigenous protesters fighting to protect their ancestral land and uphold their historic values of clean land and water for all humans. * Kirkus Reviews *Our History is the Future offers a first draft of history that will serve as the last word for years to come. Combining the literary skill of the poet, the rich contextual knowledge of the historian, and the sharp edge of experience, Nick Estes has crafted a powerful account of the Standing Rock resistance, situating it in a struggle lodged deep in time and across the full reach of global solidarities. -- Philip J. Deloria, author of Playing IndianOur History is the Future brings the history of Native American anti-imperialism to the center of the study of racial capitalism while renewing the focus on political economy in Indigenous Studies; it brings the experience of the camp at Standing Rock to the study of history, and deep learning to the ongoing fight for sovereignty; it is a book by a young scholar that draws brilliantly on the wisdom of centuries of struggle. In short: you should read it. -- Walter Johnson, author of River of Dark Dreams: Slavery and Empire in the Cotton KingdomOur History is the Future is a game-changer. In addition to providing a thorough and cogent history of the long tradition of Indigenous resistance, it is also a personal memoir and homage to the Oceti Sakowin; an entreaty to all their relations that demands the "emancipation of the earth." Estes continues in the legacy of his ancestors, from Black Elk to Vine Deloria, he turns Indigenous history right-side up as a story of self-defense against settler invasion. In so doing, he is careful and judicious in his telling, working seamlessly across eras, movements, and scholarly literatures, to forge a collective vision for liberation that takes prophecy and revolutionary theory seriously. The book will be an instant classic and go-to text for students and educators working to understand the "structure" undergirding the "event" of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This is what history as Ghost Dance looks like. -- Sandy Grande, author of Red Pedagogy: Native American Social and Political ThoughtThis extraordinary history of resistance counters the myth of Indigenous disappearance and insignificance while calling into question the very notion that resistance itself is impossible in a world saturated by capital and atrophying inequality. This is a radical Indigenous history in its finest form -- that connects individual lives to global scales of political articulation while remaining attentive to intellectual formation and coalitional politics from the 19th Century to the present. Estes draws from multiple archives and intellectual traditions and seeks to not only connect past to present but also to transform futures and possibilities for justice. -- Audra Simpson, Mohawk Interrupts: Political Life Across the Borders of the Settler StatesNick Estes is a forceful writer whose work reflects the defiant spirit of the #NoDAPL movement. Our History is the Future braids together strands of history, theory, manifesto and memoir into a unique and compelling whole that will provoke activists, scholars and readers alike to think deeper, consider broader possibilities and mobilize for action on stolen land. -- Julian Brave Noisecat, 350.orgFearless and inspiring, Nick Estes delivers a powerful rebuke of Euro-American Manifest Destiny with an Indigenous perspective that is inclusive and ideological precise. This book correctly, if not necessarily, focuses its energy on the natural evolutionary and revolutionary pathway of Oceti Sakowin resistance. Respectful, brilliant, and insightful, This book should be considered a key ingredient to achieve the universal Native construct of balance-something we must all have to ensure our continued existence. -- Marcella Gilbert, Lakota Water Protector, Warrior Women Film ProjectOur History is the Future establishes Nick Estes as one of the leading scholars of our time. This dynamic book offers a careful, deeply researched, and even-handed account of the events at Standing Rock, placing them in a long continuum of Oceti Sakowin resistance. This is a war story that links the #NoDAPL movement in the present to anti-colonial and anti-capitalist struggles in the past to demonstrate the possibilities of liberated futures. -- Jordan T. Camp, author of Incarcerating the Crisis: Freedom Struggles and the Rise of the Neoliberal StateIt is customary to hail a bold young author as the voice of their generation. In Our History is the Future, Nick Estes gives voice to many generations, those who've come before and those still to come. The book slips through time, evoking the scent of campfire that once indicted Indigenous people in the 19th century, a smoke that still lingers on 21st century Water Protectors and marks them as enemies of the state. This utterly astonishing book imparts the long history of Indigenous people, their relatives, and their struggle for liberation against capitalist North America's settler colonial violence. The long memory of the people, Estes shows, cannot be clipped by the oblivion of empire. The people do not forget. -- Christina Heatherton, co-editor of Policing the Planet: How the Policing Crisis Led to Black Lives MatterA mindful and dynamic text. Nick Estes' narrative power gives dynamism and detailed realism to some of the most formative movements of our time. The book is expansive in its isolation and focus. The book embodies resistance and shows the true effort it takes to maintain it. -- Terese Mailhot, author of HeartberriesWith scrupulous research and urgent prose, [Nick Estes] declares the DAPL protest a flowering of indigenous resistance with roots deep in history and Native sacred land...A powerful work, Estes's condemnation of the United States government is clear and resonant. * Publishers Weekly *This book is a mustread for anyone interested in the #NoDAPL movement. It works as an introduction - and a fearless analysis of - one of the biggest social movements of our times. -- Fiorella Lecoutteux * Peace News *Activist, scholar, and Lower Brule Sioux citizen Estes challenges the power systems that have attacked and disenfranchised Indigenous peoples for centuries with both the story of northern Plains peoples as well as a political philosophy of Indigenous empowerment. The author provides context for contemporary struggles against the Keystone XL and the Dakota Access pipelines. * Library Journal *Our History Is The Future traces not just an Indigenous politics of opposition, but a vibrant and omnipresent theory of decolonisation that strives to create and preserve as well as resist...Perhaps the most powerful argument of the book is the conceptualisation of Indigenous resistance as an omnipresent process that runs throughout the course of American history. -- Shelley Angelie Saggar * Hong Kong Review of Books *Nick Estes gives voice to the new wave of indigenous environmental mobilisation. -- Neha Shah * Guardian *Our History Is the Future should be on the reading lists of historians, social scientists, and members of the public interested in grasping the interconnections and continuity among the many efforts of Indigenous resistance to settler colonialism and corporate encroachments onto their lands, waters, and natural resources. -- Simone Poliandri * American Indian Culture and Research Journal *

Book SynopsisDiary of a Crisis explores the past tumultuous and traumatic year in Israel-Palestine. The eminent historian Saul Friedländer began a diary of Israeli politics in January 2023 as the country was convulsed by protests against Netanyahu’s attempt to overhaul the judiciary. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets to demonstrate against this threat to democracy. But the protests said nothing about the Palestinian question—the 'elephant in the room,' according to Friedländer, who resumed his diary after Hamas’s 7 October assault on southern Israel. Israel was facing one of the worst crises in its history, he observes, under the worst possible internal conditions.Friedländer weaves together profound reflections on a national history in which he has been an active participant. He describes how Prime Minister Golda Meir once flatly declared to him, 'There is no Palestinian people.' For Friedländer, on the other hand, the fight for democrac

Book SynopsisThe frontiers of the Roman empire together form the largest surviving monument of one of the world’s greatest states. They stretch for some 7,500 km through 20 countries which encircle the Mediterranean Sea. The remains of these frontiers have been studied by visitors and later by archaeologists for several centuries. Many of the inscriptions and sculpture, weapons, pottery and artefacts created and used by the soldiers and civilians who lived on the frontier can be seen in museums. Equally evocative of the lost might of Rome are the physical remains of the frontiers themselves. The aim of this series of booklets is not only to inform the interested visitor about the history of the frontiers but to act as a guidebook as well. The frontier in Lower Germany was one of the earliest to be created; surviving into the early 5th century, it illustrates the whole range of Roman military installations. In the Rhine delta, the watery nature of the landscape has ensured incredible survivals in the form of organic remains including ships. Upstream are great military bases created for the army poised to invade Germany, supported by forts and fortlets, all modified over time.Table of ContentsFrontiers of the Roman Empire ; Common cultural heritage of the Roman Empire ; The Roman Empire ; Frontiers and trade ; The “Frontiers of the Roman Empire” World Heritage Site ; The definition of a World Heritage Site ; The task ahead ; History and extent of frontiers ; Rome´s foreign policy ; The location of frontiers ; The army and frontiers ; The purpose of frontiers ; Soldiers and civilians ; Military administration ; Research on Roman frontiers ; Inscriptions and documents ; Survey and excavation ; Aerial survey and remote sensing ; Protection and presentation of frontiers ; Future perspectives ; The Lower German Limes ; The river frontier that saw it all ; The setting of the Lower Rhine limes ; Landscape ; Historical background and development ; The classic frontier system (late 1st – late 3rd century) ; The Roman army ; Accommodation ; The Lower German deployment ; Outstanding values of the Lower German limes ; Chronological span ; The development of military architecture ; A complete system ; A ‘military-industrial complex’ ; Riverfronts and harbours ; Water management and shipping infrastructure ; Spectacular finds: ships and votive offerings ; The true treasure: sewage and waste ; Information stored in leather and timber ; The sealing properties of later townscapes ; Archaeological research and heritage management ; What to see? ; Museums and permanent exhibitions ; Visible remains and modern references ; Further reading ; Illustration acknowledgements

But, what was the role that these sites fulfilled in each province? Why was so much effort invested in the construction of these thermal complexes in the Roman period? The author recounts his background and initiation into archaeology, and the various arrangements under which an archaeological team for the city of Lincoln operated over the next few decades. It was both an exhilarating time and full of important discoveries, but also at times a struggle to survive in the face of other forces. Over that long period, appreciation of the importance of Lincoln''s archaeological story and its public presentation have grown remarkably, such that it has now become a major heritage destination.

Book SynopsisFor over sixty years, the Pym's Lane factory in Crewe produced the benchmark of British motoring elegance in its Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. It was the home of the company's car production from World War II until 2002, when its takeover by the Volkswagen Group meant an end to Rolls-Royce production and an expansion of Bentley. In this updated edition of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, motoring expert Malcolm Bobbitt focuses on the evolution of the characteristic models the Bentley Mk VI and the R-Types, and the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, Silver Dawn, Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow and Silver Spirit, together with the Silver Seraph and Bentley Arnage while remembering the notable figures who played a vital role in the creation of these famous vehicles. Bobbitt illustrates the aftermath of the war on the company's car production and its move from Derby to Crewe, recounting its success in the 1950s and 1960s, the near bankruptcy of the company in the 1970s, its subsequent recovery and final takeover that removed Rolls-Royce from its production line.Within these pages, Bobbitt has cultivated a varied collection of photographs to create a visual account of the history of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars and to appreciate the company's organisation and its meticulous methods of design, testing and construction that led it to produce these legendary vehicles.

Today the focus of popular uprisings for democracy and participation, it underwent long periods of colonisation and anti-colonial nationalist resistance, both peaceful and militant. To understand the nature of today''s developments in North Africa we need fully to appreciate the tumultuous history of the region and how its four discrete countries followed different trajectories, some marked by a continuity of social and political structures in both the colonial era and as independent states, while others were marked by sharp ruptures and violent struggles. These historical differences are still visible in the current era and tell us much about the societies in question. This short history of the Maghreb surveys its development from the coming of Islam to the present day, but with greatest emphasis on the modern period from the early nineteenth

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe study of native `Marxisms' in Britain throws light on what many historians have referred to as `the enemy within'. In this book, David Burke looks at the activities of the Russian political emigre community in Britain, and in particular the role of one Russian-Jewish political family: the Rothsteins. Theodore Rothstein and his son Andrew, along with his sister-in-law Zelda Kahan and her husband, W. P. Coates, together played an important part in the formative years of the Communist Party of Great Britain and were closely monitored by the British secret service. This led to claims that British communism was effectively a Russian creation with Theodore Rothstein acting as the eminence grise; the hidden hand of Moscow controlling the British left-wing movement. In 1920 Theodore Rothstein's activities on the left of the British labour movement assisted the formation of a Communist party in Britain affiliated to the Comintern. Theodore was, soon after, effectively debarred from Britain following a visit to Russia, at which point his clandestine political activities passed to his son, Andrew. This book encompasses two periods. The first looks at the contribution of Theodore Rothstein to British Marxism and the response of the British intelligence services, Special Branch and MI5, to what they regarded as a serious threat to British security. The second part probes Andrew Rothstein's subsequent career, and considers four main events: the formation of the Anglo-Russian Committee in 1924, the Zinoviev Letter, the General Strike of 1926 and the ARCOS Raid of 1927, and concluding with Andrew Rothstein joining his father in Moscow in 1930. With access to recently released documents from MI5, this book sheds new light on the activities of British Marxists against the backdrop of the early twentieth century and brings to life the story of a remarkable family.Trade Review`The contribution of Russian political emigres to the development of the British communist tradition has finally been given the attention it deserves. Through his long standing interest in Theodore Rothstein, and by making extensive use of Security Service files, David Burke has deepened our understanding of British responses to the Russian Revolution.’ – Geoff Andrews, author of The Shadow Man, `Excellent … really well written and delves very deep into the Rothsteins’ lives … the archival basis of the study makes it genuinely original. Book SynopsisThe Argive Plain in the northeastern Peloponnese, Greece, was central to the Mycenaean culture during the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1600-1200 BCE). While known for its settlements and treasures, little is understood about its agricultural sustainability. This study examines Mycenaean farming in the Argive Plain and its societal implications, investigating if resource depletion contributed to the Bronze Age collapse. Using agricultural potential modelling, it reconstructs farming practices within the region''s political hierarchy, assessing sustainability through food consumption, energy needs, and land usage. Results indicate sustainable agriculture despite challenges like drought. However, ruling elites'' additional production needs may have strained resources. The thesis also addresses estimations of Neolithic and Bronze Age Aegean subsistence space, highlighting the overlooked impact of livestock on agricultural potential. By incorporating dairy and meat production, future models can better represent food production and environmental sustainability. This research enhances understanding of Mycenaean agricultural practices before the Bronze Age collapse, illustrating how elite formation likely influenced local communities and broader society.

Book SynopsisInspired by decolonial thinking, this book challenges romantic images of Y Wladfa, the Welsh Patagonian settlement founded in 1865. Drawing on archival sources written in Spanish, Welsh and English, it exposes the complex human relationships of this settler colony, and in particular disrupts the myth of WelshIndigenous friendship by foregrounding Indigenous experience and revealing less familiar accounts in the record. A newly-developed framework applies three logics possession, racialization/barbarisation, and assimilation to make sense of settler colonialism in Patagonia and to debate Wales's complex position as both colonised and coloniser. A new analysis of contemporary cultural products (television, film, textbooks) further demonstrates how the romantic view continues to shape racial stereotypes today, concluding that such settler origin countries as Wales are vital sites of decolonial debate.

Book SynopsisThis is the first major study to comprehensively analyze the art and architecture of the archdiocese of Bari and Canosa during the Byzantine period and the upheaval of the Norman conquest. The book places Bari and Canosa in a Mediterranean context, arguing that international connections with the eastern Mediterranean were a continuous thread that shaped art and architecture throughout the Byzantine and Norman eras. Clare Vernon has examined a wide variety of media, including architecture, sculpture, metalwork, manuscripts, epigraphy and luxury portable objects, as well as patronage, to illustrate how cross-cultural encounters, the first crusade, slavery and continuities and disruptions in the relationship with Constantinople, shaped the visual culture of the archdiocese. From Byzantine to Norman Italy will appeal to students and scholars of Byzantine art, the medieval Mediterranean and the Italo-Norman world.Trade ReviewThis is a fascinating look at the important mid-sized port city of Bari during the pivotal centuries of the transition from Byzantine to Norman authority in the region. Vernon deftly shows us that Bari was a town attentive to its wide-ranging connections with important sites in both the contemporary and ancient Mediterranean world. Exploring these connections through the lens of Bari’s buildings and monuments, Vernon brings our focus to the town’s efforts to demonstrate its economic prowess and its participation in the papal reform movement, crusading, and cutting-edge artistic developments. -- Sarah Davis-Secord, Associate Professor of History * University of New Mexico, USA *
