Princeton University Press What Is Global History

Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive overview of the innovative new discipline of global historyUntil very recently, historians have looked at the past with the tools of the nineteenth century. But globalization has fundamentally altered our ways of knowing, and it is no longer possible to study nations in isolation or to understand world history as emanating from the West. This book reveals why the discipline of global history has emerged as the most dynamic and innovative field in historyone that takes the connectedness of the world as its point of departure, and that poses a fundamental challenge to the premises and methods of history as we know it.What Is Global History? provides a comprehensive overview of this exciting new approach to history. The book addresses some of the biggest questions the discipline will face in the twenty-first century: How does global history differ from other interpretations of world history? How do we write a global history that is Trade Review"Conrad makes a case for global history as a self-consciously political and ethical enterprise through an enjoyable synthesis of what has to date been a diffuse, even incoherent field. Book SynopsisThat the idea of world revolution was crucial for the Bolshevik leaders in the years following the 1917 revolution is a well-known fact. But what did the party's rank and file make of it? How did it resonate with the general population? And what can a social history of international solidarity tell us about the transformation of Soviet society from NEP to Stalinism? The Charism of World Revolution undertakes the first in-depth analysis of the discourses and practices of internationalism in early Soviet society during the years of revolution, civil war and NEP, using forgotten archival materials and contemporary sources. What emerges is a well rounded and inspiring portrait that will help today's readers concretize what internationalism in an era of global struggle looked like.Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsAbbreviationsEditorial Note1 Introduction2 ‘World Revolution’, the Bolsheviks and Soviet Society 1 Bolshevik Internationalism through the World War and Revolution 2 1918/19, 1923, 1926: Three World-Revolutionary ‘Windows of Opportunity’ in Their Soviet Reflection3 Activists and the Charisma of World Revolution 1 Activists, Opportunists and Functionaries: Types of Early Soviet Political Actors 2 The World Revolution as a ‘Delightful Thing’ 3 Communist World Society or Russian Domination? • The Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto

Academic Studies Press The Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBased on years of archival research, 'The Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto' is the most detailed study ever undertaken into the fate of more than 800 Jewish doctors who devoted themselves, in many cases until the day they died, to the care of the sick and the dying in the Ghetto. The functioning of the Ghetto hospitals, clinics and laboratories is explained in fascinating detail. Readers will learn about the ground-breaking research undertaken in the Ghetto as well as about the underground medical university that prepared hundreds of students for a career in medicine; a career that, in most cases, was to be cut brutally short within weeks of them completing their first year of studies.Trade Review“[The Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto] sheds light on the influence of doctors, nurses and other health workers on daily coping while attempting to survive and save lives. The book broadens the perspective regarding participants in the Uprising. Ciesielska describes dozens of doctors and nurses who, rather than fleeing for their lives following Aktions in the ghetto, stayed behind to treat their patients in the bunkers, where nearly all of them died; a type of ‘white-coat rebellion’ alongside the armed struggle. These medical services also reflect the doctors’ and nurses’ ethical decisions made under extreme tragic circumstances during the ghetto’s final stages. … This book is a must read for researchers of the Holocaust, the history of medicine, in general, and particularly Jewish medicine. Its appendixes pose an interesting research challenge for further study.”— Miriam Offer, Social History of Medicine“It goes without saying that the Nazis had no interest whatsoever in the well-being and health of the captive Jewish inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto. But because they feared that diseases and epidemics might spread beyond it and endanger German personnel and afflict the general Polish population, they provided a bare modicum of assistance to Jewish hospitals, health services, doctors, nurses and pharmacists.Innumerable books have been written about the Holocaust in Poland, but precious few have dealt with this important but overlooked issue. Maria Ciesielska’s The Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto… examines it in voluminous detail from the moment the ghetto was established in November 1940 until it was destroyed during the uprising in April 1943.”— Sheldon Kirshner, The Times of Israel (blog)“Dr. Maria Ciesielska’s account of the Jewish doctors in the Warsaw Ghetto adds an important dimension to the existing material, but this is not just another historical account. Dr Ciesielska’s meticulous, detailed, and comprehensive use of many personal memoirs and testimonies to document their lives, and their deaths, provides a special lens through we which we can learn and understand more about the personal stories of those doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who worked and lived under those dire and extreme circumstances in the Ghetto. Through her unique way of storytelling, Dr. Ciesielska provides us with a humanistic glimpse into the complexities of the daily lives of these Jewish victims, and the ethical and moral complexities that they faced as healthcare professionals. This is a work of devotion to the memory of these individuals.”— Dr. Tessa Chelouche, M.D.“This remarkable book depicts the heroic efforts which the Warsaw Ghetto doctors deployed to protect the inhabitants from epidemics and treat them if they were sick. Weakened by starvation, overcrowding, catastrophic hygienic conditions and diseases, most Ghetto residents did not survive. Many also perished in death camps. The Ghetto medical community was also almost completely wiped out. The author studied accounts by surviving physicians and provides a chronological history of the Ghetto medical organization, interspersed with portraits of Ghetto doctors. The book offers many examples of doctors’ altruism and self-sacrifice. Their exact number is unknown, but Dr. Ciesielska lists the names of over 700 of them. Their tragic and often heroic stories will now be available to English readers, both in the medical community and in the general population interested in the history of the Warsaw Ghetto.”— Claude Romney, Professor Emerita, University of Calgary“The Warsaw Ghetto is one of the greatest tragedies of the twentieth century, ending with the Great Deportation to Treblinka’s gas chambers; at the same time, the Ghetto offers an empowering story of a new and resourceful system of medical care which was a form of sustained resistance to the Nazi occupation. Maria Ciesielska tells this story vividly: she offers many new insights into the Jewish physicians and nurses confined to the Ghetto. It is a narrative of hope in efforts to create a new system of healthcare, and of dark violence from the Nazi authorities in their determination to destroy the Ghetto. The culmination is the heroic resistance of the Ghetto Uprising. We are offered a vivid and authoritative narrative with many new and often touching insights in the efforts to overcome epidemics and starvation. Dr. Ciesielska has created a lucidly written and inspiring book.”— Paul Weindling, Research Professor in the History of Medicine, Oxford Brookes University“Ciesielska, however, a specialist in family medicine and an expert in the history of medicine, has delved into the various archives in Poland, producing highly impressive findings. She presents a new, preliminary database, which will serve as a foundation for additional studies and is a significant contribution to commemorating Jewish doctors, both men and women. …Ciesielska’s findings are impressive and an invaluable achievement. Her methodically written book follows a chronological development placed in broad historical contexts and enriched by diverse sources. …Maria Ciesielska’s book sheds light on the ‘other side of the coin’ in its description of Jewish doctors. They left behind a written legacy that is also still relevant today. Their stories provide food for thought on the potential of maintaining ethical and professional strength, even in the most difficult circumstances, and of the ability to resist the forces of evil while continuing to provide patients with devoted medical care in impossible and unexpected conditions. The book also draws attention to the dozens of non-Jewish doctors, who assisted their Jewish colleagues while risking their own lives. Although their numbers were few, their inspirational actions were extraordinary.”— Miriam Offer, Western Galilee College, Israel, Holocaust and Genocide Studies“This meticulous account of the Warsaw Ghetto’s medical community, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, is a long overdue tribute to an era’s unsung heroes. Drawing extensively on archives, with appendices and a photo gallery listing over seven hundred individuals, backgrounds, specialties, hospital affiliations, the author sheds light on a subculture that emerged in 1940, following the ghetto’s establishment, and their dedication under the most hellish of environments to saving or helping Jewish lives. …This poignant but well-researched book is essential for Holocaust collections.”— Hallie Cantor, Yeshiva University, AJL News & Reviews“…Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto is a signal contribution to the growing scholarship on Jews in the medical fraternity during the Holocaust, and it has several virtues to commend it: its comprehensive, multifocal treatment of the subject; its attention to every dimension of medicine and healthcare in the Warsaw Ghetto; its recourse to hitherto unused source material; its profiles of specific doctors; and its inventories (in the appendices) of the names of the ghetto’s doctors. But besides being a work of meticulous research, The Doctors of the Warsaw Ghetto is a poignant tribute to the Warsaw Ghetto’s unsung medical ‘fighters.’ It was in this memorial spirit that Ciesielska, discussing her book in an article by the Jewish Book Council, remarked, ‘I don’t know if you can say Kaddish over a book. If it is possible, please do.’”— Scott Abramson, Northwestern University, Contemporary JewryTable of ContentsACKNOWLEDGEMENTSFOREWORD BY PROFESSOR MICHAEL BERENBAUMFOREWORD BY LUC ALBINSKI PREFACECHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN POLANDCHAPTER II: THE MEDICAL SYSTEM IN PRE-WAR POLANDDoctors in pre-war PolandThe education of doctors in PolandCareer prospects of doctors in PolandJewish doctors in Poland CHAPTER III: JEWISH DOCTORS AND ANTI-SEMITISM BETWEEN THE WARSAnti-Semitism in AcademiaAnti-Semitism in the Association of Doctors of the Polish StateActivities of the Association of Doctors of the Polish RepublicJews in the Warsaw Medical Society CHAPTER IV: HEALTHCARE DURING AND IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE 1939 SIEGE OF WARSAWThe Czyste (Old Order) Hospital for Orthodox JewsThe Bersohn and Bauman Children’s HospitalThe Ujazdowski HospitalThe activities of the Jewish community organizations CHAPTER V: HEALTHCARE PRIOR TO THE CREATION OF THE GHETTOThe Polish medical system under occupationCreation of the JudenratThe functioning of the medical chambersThe activities of TOZThe Czyste Jewish HospitalThe Bersohn and Bauman Children’s HospitalPharmaciesEmergency servicesThe threat of labor campsTreatment of Jewish converts CHAPTER VI: HEALTHCARE AFTER THE SEALING OF THE WARSAW GHETTOThe doctors in the GhettoActivities of the Judenrat’s Health DepartmentThe fight against epidemicsTOZ activities after the sealing of the Warsaw GhettoEmergency servicesThe Czyste Jewish HospitalThe Bersohn and Bauman Children’s HospitalThe hospital at 109 Leszno StreetPharmaciesThe Chemical and Bacteriological InstituteMedical care for the Jewish PoliceThe prisonsChristian Convert DoctorsMental health in the GhettoThe threat of labor camps CHAPTER VII: THE GREAT DEPORTATION (GROSSAKTION)Events leading to the Great DeportationThe murder of Dr. Franciszek RaszejaHostage takingThe Great DeportationCzyste Jewish HospitalThe General Hospital on Stawki StreetDoctors during the Great DeportationPharmacists during the Great DeportationDoctors in the Jewish Police during the Deportation CHAPTER VIII: HEALTHCARE AFTER THE GREAT DEPORTATIONThe Hospital on 6–8 Gęsia StreetDoctors after the Great DeportationNurses after the Great DeportationPharmacists after the Great DeportationEmergency Services after the DeportationThe Fate of the Gęsia Street Hospital CHAPTER IX: THE GHETTO UPRISING AND ITS AFTERMATHThe last hospital in the GhettoThe fate of Jewish doctors after the Deportation CHAPTER X: RESISTANCE BY THE MEDICAL FRATERNITYThe underground medical schoolThe Blum-Bielicka School of NursingStudies in Hunger DiseaseStudies in Typhus CHAPTER XI: CONCLUSIONANNEXURE I: LIST OF JEWISH DOCTORS WHO WERE ARRESTED AND HELD HOSTAGE IN 1940 FOLLOWING ANDRZEJ KOTT’S ESCAPE FROM THE GESTAPOANNEXURE II: LIST OF NON-ARYAN DOCTORS IN WARSAW FROM THE ARCHIVES OF THE JEWISH HISTORICAL INSTITUTEANNEXURE III: LIST OF JEWISH DOCTORS WORKING AND LIVING IN WARSAW IN 1940–1942ANNEXURE IV: THE DOCTORS MOVED FROM THE WARSAW GHETTO TO THE ŁÓDŹ GHETTO IN 1941/42ANNEXURE V: SCHEDULE OF PHARMACIES OVERSEEN BY THE PHARMACY DEPARTMENT OF THE JUDENRATANNEXURE VI: A LIST OF PHARMACIES OVERSEEN BY THE PHARMACY DEPARTMENT OF THE JUDENRAT IN THE GHETTO IN SEPTEMBER 1942. Book SynopsisWhich European and non-European ideas and practices facilitated the shaping of European unity? Or rather, which pursuits led to deadlocks in the cooperation between states? The book seeks answers to these questions by surveying the historical attempts at realizing supranational patterns of governance in Europe since the Middle Ages. The main focus is on the nineteenth and twentieth century organizational models of European unification. The analysis draws on an abundance of historical and legal source material. While the author encourages critical thinking about European integration, the exploration is admittedly based on specific values. Éva Bóka claims that the struggle for the humanization of power with its democratic creative force has been the major driver in the development of the system of liberties and the idea of European unity. The analysis of the historical process up to the Lisbon Treaty (2007) with the recognition of common, shared, and supported competences meets the author’s set of values to a great extent. The last part of the book examines whether the European Union can serve as a political and economic organizational model for other parts of the world.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction: The Idea of European Unity, the Western System of Liberties, and the Dichotomy of Federalism versus Intergovernmentalism 1. Central European University Press Ukraine'S Patronal Democracy and the Russian

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 jeopardizes the country's independence and its chances for Western-style development. However, the heroic attitude of the Ukrainian people, combined with a solidifying national identity, makes the domestic foundations for a western turn stronger than ever. After the invasion, building strong foundations of liberal democracy will be a top priority. In addition to alleviating immediate problems, the country must also address its post-communist legacy and address the constraints of patronalism. The authors of this edited volume, leading Ukrainian scholars supplemented by colleagues from Hungary, examine the chances of an anti-patronal transformation after the war. The book provides an overview of the development of Ukraine's political-economic system: color revolutions in 2004 and 2014 brought democratic transformation, but no change in the patronage system The result was patronal regime cycles instead of the emergence of a Western-type liberal democracy in the country. Building on the conceptual framework of the editors' The Anatomy of Post-Communist Regimes (CEU Press, 2020), the 12 chapters examine the impact of the war on patronal democracy, the relational economy, clientelist society, and the international environment in which Ukraine operates. Mr. Davis is a wizard of the archives. The general reader will delight in his excavation of local newspapers in pursuit of treasures that illuminate whatever topic is under discussion."---James Campbell, Wall Street Journal"John Davis charts the complexities of these important decades in London’s recent history with great brilliance. . . . A sure-footed and unrivalled guide."---Jerry White, Times Literary Supplement"Davis is a magnificent tour guide for the world he has reconstructed. . . . He shows us how London stopped being so boring, what we gained and what we lost."---Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite, London Review of Books"Entertaining and affecting."---John Gapper, Financial Times"This is an engrossing, scholarly account of a time when London was in transformation . . . and one that will interest Londoners and non-Londoners alike."---Martin Chilton, The Independent"A beautifully written account of the arrival of trattorias, Carnaby Street, tower blocks and gentrification, as the capital was developed after the destruction of the war."---Simon Heffer, Daily Telegraph"Like the Kinks classic to which the title playfully alludes, Waterloo Sunrise is infectious, full of human detail, and generous in its narrative sweep."---Matthew d’Ancona, Tortoise Media"Davis weaves two decades of social, physical, economic, cultural, and political change into a coherent tapestry. . . . A welcome, well-written resource." * Choice Reviews *"There is a wealth of information and cogent analysis in this book. It is well-researched with a very full scholarly apparatus. . . . [A] highly entertaining work."---Alan Clarke, Open History Journal"Within its 434 pages some alchemy turns the drab 1970’s into London’s apotheosis. . . . I love the book—it’s a 400-page plus page turner."---Barry Coidan, The London Society"This is a book I will be using as a research source for many years to come."---Geoff Nicholson, Los Angeles Review of Books"Waterloo Sunrise, an original, superbly written, and immaculately researched book by John Davis, has the merit not only of being a serious work of social history but also of being one that lifts up the stone to reveal aspects of London life between the early 1960s and the advent of Mrs. Thatcher. . . . Davis is as perceptive in describing the decline of the 1970s as he is in detailing the excitement of London in the 1960s."---Simon Heffer, New Criterion

Much recommended."---Jamelle Bouie, New York Times columnist"An astute discussion of the American founders’ suspicions that the republic they had created wouldn’t, in the end, make it. . . . Gracefully written and fair in its judgments. . . . Timely."---Barton Swaim, Wall Street Journal"Written in simultaneously accessible and brilliant prose, Rasmussen crafts a flowing narrative built on the writings of the founders themselves. This narrative is further illuminated by his commentary and mastery of the secondary literature. This book can (and should) be enjoyed by nonspecialists, but this does not diminish the originality of the work."---Kenly Stewart, Los Angeles Review of Books"Fascinating."---Steve Donoghue, Christian Science Monitor"An illuminating account of how the founding fathers worried about the future of America. . . . This standout history provides useful context for understanding the roots of contemporary political turmoils and may comfort those who fear that American democracy is in dire peril." * Publishers Weekly, starred review *"Making the striking argument that all but one of the major founders of the U.S. died disillusioned with their creation, Rasmussen nevertheless offers hope for our current predicaments . . . an authoritative and convincing argument in disarmingly artful prose." * Kirkus Reviews *"Rasmussen has produced a well-researched study that is a salutary read. He writes accessibly, explaining what motivated and worried each of [the founders]. Concern for future generations and the fate of the republic is a recurring theme, and will also resonate with many readers today." * Library Journal *"Magisterial . . . creative and thought-provoking at every turn . . . a delightful book. . . . Rasmussen has superbly placed the story of the Founders’ growing ideological concerns about their creation in the context of their own often eccentric personalities."---John O. McGinnis, Law & Liberty"On my history book of the year short list."---Marvin Olasky, World"Drawing on reams of personal correspondence between the Founders, Rasmussen persuasively argues that the vast majority of America’s Founders—including the likes of Washington, Adams, Hamilton, and Jefferson—went to their death beds disillusioned with the political order they had created."---Thomas Koenig, The Dispatch"Very timely . . . a fascinating and completely new perspective on the Founders and their view of the country they helped create . . . highly engaging and thought-provoking, showing the very human side of politics in early America."---Jerry D. Lenaburg, New York Journal of Books"Compelling and compulsively readable. . . . In putting leading founders’ disillusionment with the Constitution at the center of his thoughtful scholarly analysis, Rasmussen vividly brings to light the fact that the founders themselves were often the Constitution’s most perceptive and powerful critics."---George Thomas, American Political Thought"Rasmussen’s book also offered me some new insights and interesting facts. . . . Fears of a Setting Sun helps in understanding some of the roots of our contemporary political struggle and the fear of the decay of American democracy."---Pia Herzan, H-Soz-Kult"Fears of a Setting Sun is an engaging, indeed fun, read, nicely written and deftly argued. More than that, it is a useful reminder at this political moment that while things ain’t what they used to be, they never were in the first place."---Steven Conn, Origins

Book SynopsisTrade Review"A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year""A History Today Book of the Year""A Seminary Co-Op Notable Book of the Year""[Brown] delivers an insightful and detailed chronicle of his life and academic career. . . . A rewarding combination of the personal and the scholarly, this is a valuable resource for students of the ancient world and the early Middle Ages." * Publishers Weekly *"This meticulous and lively account of [Brown’s] intellectual development lovingly acknowledges all the scholars—from his school days onward—whose work helped shape his own. . . . This book offers no less than a template for how to live, in an uncertain world, while surrounded by death and the unraveling of all we know: that is, in generous recognition of our teachers, with boundless curiosity, and buoyed by the delight of lifelong scholarship."---Claire Messud, Harper’s"No historian has evoked more vividly the strange waltz between a transcendent faith and earthly powers in the centuries from Constantine to Muhammad (a period the book’s author named ’late antiquity’) than Peter Brown. Journeys of the Mind: A Life in History is a gripping new memoir about how he came to do it. . . . A sustained and moving meditation on how historians of any faith cope with the strangeness of its past."---Michael Ledger-Lomas, Los Angeles Review of Books"An enthralling account of an eminent scholar at work. . . . Journeys of the Mind may well be the most romantic book of the year."---Michael Dirda, Washington Post"‘Journeys of the Mind’ is a scintillating intellectual autobiography and an evocative traversal of lost worlds."---Dominic Green, Wall Street Journal"An extraordinary book, recounting the intellectual development of an extraordinary scholar."---Peter Sarris, Engelsberg Ideas"Enthralling." * Salopian Magazine *"A fascinating map of intellectual debts, of unexpected twists and turns . . . and of academic friendships across most of the globe. . . .[A] brilliant book."---Mary Beard, Times Literary Supplement"The veritable crash course in twentieth-century intellectual history that [Journeys of the Mind] provides will capture the attention of persons with no particular knowledge of or interest in late antique studies as such. . . . And this, I think, is the book’s greatest contribution—that it is also an invitation. To follow the journeys of Peter Brown’s mind over the course of these seven hundred pages is necessarily to begin making journeys of our own."---John Ladouceur, The Lamp"Peter Brown’s Journeys of the Mind is really two books in one: the autobiography of a distinguished historian, and a guided tour of the development of his intellectual interests and their application during his long career. . . . A fascinating safari through territory that is often unfamiliar but always interesting."---Lawrence N. Crumb, The Living Church"An outstanding account, drawing on an exhaustive personal archive and aided by a formidable memory. . . .Written in pellucid prose, always gracious, unpretentious and unaffected, it is a rich feast to relish slowly." * Dublin Review of Books *"Journeys of the Mind has elucidated a lifetime of thought. It reflects how much Brown has enriched scholarship for the past six decades in ways which will undoubtedly stimulate new directions for research on this ‘world of late antiquity’ for many more decades to come."---Rosamond McKitterick, Zeitschrift für Antikes Christentum "Peter Brown, like no other, has taught historians to view religion as a powerful force in history (past and present) and has taught theologians to understand every religious idea and doctrine as embedded – not to say: incarnated – within its specific historical and social context. This book’s gift to its readers is to offer this double insight and challenge once again, this time not in relation to distant times and people, but to the scholar’s own life and thought in history. Journeys of the Mind reveals how religion can work as a catalyst for historical imagination. But reading this book can also stimulate reflection on how history can become a catalyst for theological work. For history without religious imagination is empty, and theology without historical imagination is blind, as Kant might have said."---Katharina Heyden, Zeitschrift für Antikes Christentum"Brown’s autobiographical reflections now offer us a clearer and indeed much wider-ranging view on [religion]"---Claudia Rapp, Zeitschrift für Antikes Christentum "The most exciting book that I have read this century is Journeys of the Mind (Princeton), an intellectual memoir by the historian of late antiquity Peter Brown. Immaculately written, radiant with wisdom, generous, grateful and gladdening, it matches The Education of Henry Adams without the haughty wounded misanthropy."---Richard Davenport-Hines, Times Literary Supplement"This wry scholarly autobiography excels in its pen portraits of scholars who have influenced Brown, from Mary Douglas to Michel Foucault."---Michael Ledger-Lomas, History Today
