Amberley Publishing Eleanor of Aquitaine
Book Synopsis'Impeccably researched and beautifully written, this book offers a fresh perspective on one of the most controversial queens in history. Not to be missed.' Tracey BormanTrade ReviewImpeccably researched and beautifully written, this book offers a fresh perspective on one of the most controversial queens in history. Not to be missed. -- Tracey Borman‘Sara Cockerill’s new biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine is a welcome addition to the literature on this fascinating medieval queen. There have been many books on Eleanor, but too many repeat myths and misconceptions about her. Cockerill’s careful historical detective-work digs behind the mythology to reveal what we know about the real Eleanor of Aquitaine.’ -- Michael Evans, author of Inventing EleanorThis scholarly, well-written book provides a welcome reassessment of the extraordinary life of a woman who was successively queen of France and of England. Sara Cockerill deploys forensic skills in a thoroughly readable study solidly based on the sources. Eleanor of Aquitaine is revealed not as a romantic heroine, but as a woman faced with extraordinary problems, from her unsatisfactory marriage to Louis VII of France, to her turbulent relationship with Henry II of England and her rebellious sons. -- Michael Prestwich, Emeritus Professor of History, Durham University‘Blows the other biographies out of the water!’ -- Elizabeth Chadwick, author of The Summer Queen

Amberley Publishing Industrial Locomotives & Railways of Scotland
This is the ninth volume in the ten-part series of regional books examining the industrial railways of England, Scotland and Wales. Like elsewhere in Britain, changes have been far-reaching in industry, and Scotland has certainly suffered considerably in recent decades with the loss of its traditional coal mining, steel and manufacturing industries, especially many of those that were once located around its Central Belt. The diversity of the locomotives and the railways that once served industry in Scotland is a fascinating and neglected subject, and both standard and narrow gauge systems, most of which no longer survive today, are covered within the pages of this book. The author presents an array of striking images, both in colour and black and white, that strive to include some feel for the locations being studied, covering the broad spectrum of industrial railways that once existed in Scotland. These mostly previously unpublished photographs, accompanied by detailed captions, reflect the changing face of Scottish industry over the last six decades or so. As the title suggests, this book is chiefly about Scotland’s industrial railways and its locomotives, many actually constructed in Scotland, but this work is also a sad reminder of how much our traditional industries have contracted, or have even been lost entirely over this period, either through globalisation of manufacturing, or the importation of commodities at a cheaper market rate than could have been obtained at home.

Amberley Publishing Living the Cold War
Book SynopsisNew paperback edition - An insider's account of the Cold War as seen by a key diplomat abroad and in London. A privileged view of work that won the Cold War, written with humour and insight.Trade Review"Diplomacy is an art form, and Christopher Mallaby is a master of it. He not only served his country well – he served the wider interest too. In describing events now gone, he sets an example for events yet to come." -- Sir John Major KG CH"Some people's memoirs describe history. Others, like this author, have lived history. Christopher Mallaby was a key insider at crucial events in the Cold War and its aftermath. This fascinating account of some of the late twentieth century’s most pivotal moments gives new, very personal insights into the dramas of the East-West confrontation. This a highly readable and very important book." -- Rt Hon Lord George Robertson KT GCMG, Former Secretary General of NATO and UK Defence Secretary"From the Cuban Missile Crisis to German Unification, Christopher Mallaby witnessed and then shaped many of the key political events of the second half of the twentieth century. His elegant memoir is lucid in its analysis and wise in its judgments. As someone who worked for him, that was no surprise. For me, though, the most compelling chapters were at the beginning, writing with restrained passion about his family: I learned what shaped the character of a great public servant." -- Sir Simon McDonald KCMG KCVO, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service

Vintage Publishing The Death and Life of Great American Cities
Book SynopsisIn this classic text, Jane Jacobs set out to produce an attack on current city planning and rebuilding and to introduce new principles by which these should be governed. The result is one of the most stimulating books on cities ever written. Throughout the post-war period, planners temperamentally unsympathetic to cities have been let loose on our urban environment. Inspired by the ideals of the Garden City or Le Corbusier's Radiant City, they have dreamt up ambitious projects based on self-contained neighbourhoods, super-blocks, rigid 'scientific' plans and endless acres of grass. Yet they seldom stop to look at what actually works on the ground. The real vitality of cities, argues Jacobs, lies in their diversity, architectural variety, teeming street life and human scale. It is only when we appreciate such fundamental realities that we can hope to create cities that are safe, interesting and economically viable, as well as places that people want to live in.'Perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning... Jacobs has a powerful sense of narrative, a lively wit, a talent for surprise and the ability to touch the emotions as well as the mind' New York Times Book ReviewTable of Contents 1: Introduction Part One: The Peculiar Nature of Cities 2: The uses of sidewalks: safety 3: The uses of sidewalks: contact 4: The uses of sidewalks: assimilating children 5: The uses of neighbourhood parks 6: The uses of city neighbourhoods Part Two: The Conditions for City Diversity 7: The generators of diversity 8: The need for mixed primary uses 9: The need for small blocks 10: The need for aged buildings 11: The need for concentration 12: Some myths about diversity Part Three: Forces of Decline and Regeneration 13: The self-destruction of diversity 14: The curse of border vacuums 15: Unslumming and slumming 16: Gradual money and cataclysmic money Part Four: Different Tactics 17: Subsidizing dwellings 18: Erosion of cities or attrition of automobiles 19: Visual order: its limitations and possibilities 20: Salvaging projects 21: Governing and planning districts 22: The kind of problem a city is
