Book SynopsisThis volume presents the pottery from a series of deposits excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in the palace at Knossos and assigned by him to the last part of the Middle Bronze Age or Middle Minoan III. The substantial architectural modifications seen in this period are examined along with stratigraphy to give proper context to the pottery deposits. Middle Minoan III was the time when Knossos appeared to expand its reach across Crete: from the First Palace Period, when palaces at Malia and Phaistos rivalled Knossos, to the Second Palace Period, when seemingly they diminished and other smaller palaces were built. These changes unfolded over the course of the Middle Minoan III period, divided by Evans into two sub-phases, MM IIIA and MM IIIB. He used many palatial deposits to define these phases. However, he did not present the pottery, stratigraphy and architecture in full, leading eventually to some ambiguity over the status of the period. This detailed study revisits more than a dozen of t

Book SynopsisSilchester (Calleva) experienced major disruption in the late first century A.D. as the Iron Age oppidum was transformed into the Roman city responsible for the administration of the civitas of the Atrebates. Aligned on the cardinal points, a rectilinear street grid was laid across the settlement replacing the late Iron Age network of streets and lanes oriented north-west/south-east and north-east/south-west. While the pre-existing property boundaries within Insula IX were retained there was a total re-build within them. The excavated area contained one complete property and fragments of three of its neighbours. Rather than conform to the new grid all the buildings were constructed at 45 degrees to it, reasserting the late Iron Age orientations. The timber-framed buildings within the complete property consisted of a row of three a rectangular kitchen, a town-house and a roundhouse separated by a yard from a re-built taberna, also diagonal to the street on which it fronted. The rigours of living in such heat, and the difficulties of attempting to control blood-feuding nomads, led to the suicide of seven fellow-officers. Despite these problems, Gerald Hanley writes with great affection for the local clans, an affection that is untainted by sentimentality. Of all the races of Africa, there cannot be one better to live among than the most difficult, the proudest, the bravest, the vainest, the most merciless, the friendliest: the Somalis.Trade Review"the foremost writer of his generation" Ernest Hemmingway"

Book SynopsisThe true story of the city of Port Royal in Jamaica. In 1692 an earthquake and tidal wave caused the city to sink beneath the sea. Robert F. Marx was one of the men caught up in the legends of buried treasure and this book describes the fulfillment of his childhood dream: a two-and-a-half year exploration of the historic Jamaican port.Trade ReviewIn a month of high quality publications, this engrossing book stands out as something very special indeed. This is one of the most compelling accounts of an archaeological expedition I have ever read. Marx's ability to bring history to life is extraordinary and his account of the dangerous excavations was pure Indiana Jones stuff. DIVE Magazine The author, Robert Marx, is a colourful and controversial character in the archaeological business and not without his critics. He is well known for his treasure-hunting expeditions around the world. Some say he sails close to the wind in his navigation between archaeology and outright treasure hunting. Such a controversial approach inevitably involves dramatic 'adventures' which, while not necessarily gaining universal approval, assure the reader of a fascinating and exciting ride. • The 1930s Scrapbook

The Museum of Brands The 1930s Scrapbook

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFilled to the brim with images, this scrapbook of the 1930s overflows with nostalgia, for those who remember that extraordinary era. For those who do not, this wealth of imagery provides a vivid insight into a time when sliced bread had just reached the table and Butlin''s holiday camps had recently opened. Life in the 1930s for many was not easy; for others, who had known Victorian times, the pace of change was frightening, and ''modern'' life led to ''nerve tension''. Yet change brought a better standard of living and numerous new products helped the daily routine. Electrical appliances were a boon to housewives without servants, affordable motor cars made access to the countryside easier, new fun included Dinky Toys, Monopoly and a stream of delectable confectionery (Mars bars, KitKat, Black Magic, Cadbury''s Roses). The aluminium milk bottle top made its appearance. Design was memorable for the red telephone kiosk, the Anglepoise lamp and the Underground map - all still in evidence today. The Royal Family went through a turbulent year following the death of George V, when Edward VIII decided he had to abdicate. The speeding motorist was hampered by 30 mph restrictions, and pedestrian crossings were guarded by Belisha beacons. By the end of the 1930s, television held exciting promise for the future, but a growing tension focused on impending war. The 1930s Scrapbook has drawn together the best from the Robert Opie Collection. The images are as bright today as when they were purchased in the shops. Coronation souvenirs, film and fashion magazines, fireworks, comics and Christmas crackers - all survived to tell a remarkable story.

UEA Publishing Project Fenwomen A Portrait of Women in an English

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1975, Fenwomen was the first non-fiction book published by Virago. A vivid social and oral history of an isolated village in the Cambridgeshire Fens, it provides a unique portrait, spanning nearly 100 years, via the previously unheard voices of the women who lived there, of a community where there were virtually no professional or middle-class people, where intermarriage was common and a single family owned all the village land. Fenwomen was in a tradition stretching through Ronald Blythe (Akenfield) and 20 years further back to the true pioneer of English oral history, George Ewart Evans, with his publication Ask the Fellows Who Cut the Hay (1956). In an extended new introduction to this Full Circle edition, Mary Chamberlain ecalls her original intent to write a feminist Akenfield, a history from the bottom up not of great country houses and the chatelaines who ran them but of women as labourers and labourers'' wives. She describes, too, how she revisited the village and talked to some of the original women about how their lives had changed over 35 years.By any measure, this book is essential reading, but in this handsome new edition, with Justin Partyka''s eloquent, unforgettable photographic portraits of Isleham and its people, it is a joy to own - Stephanie Cross, The Lady

Book SynopsisEast Macedonia in northern Greece has rich deposits of gold and silver as well as copper and iron ores. The gold and silver were important to Classical Athens and even more so to Alexander the Great's Hellenistic world. Copper was extracted as early as the Late Neolithic, and iron was worked from the Iron Age to Ottoman times. Bringing to life the essential background to this wealth derived from metals, this book looks at the archaeological and archaeometallurgical evidence, some of it very new, for the mining and processing of the ores and the extraction of the metal. The book is written with the visitor to the region very much in mind, taking the reader closer to the landscapes where these practices took place to make sense of silent landscapes' where so much happened at one time but where nature has now taken over the remains of buildings, installations and heaps of waste rendering them mute' and meaningless for all but the expert historian of technology.
