Winner of ASOR''s 2022 G. Ernest Wright Award for the most substantial volume dealing with archaeological material, excavation reports and material culture from the ancient Near East and Eastern Mediterranean.  This is a complete history of Antioch, one of the most significant major cities of the eastern Mediterranean and a crossroads for the Silk Road, from its foundation by the Seleucids, through Roman rule, the rise of Christianity, Islamic and Byzantine conquests, to the Crusades and beyond.Antioch has typically been treated as a city whose classical glory faded permanently amid a series of natural disasters and foreign invasions in the sixth and seventh centuries CE. Such studies have obstructed the view of Antioch's fascinating urban transformations from classical to medieval to modern city and the processes behind these transformations. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive overview of the history of modern American thought and examines a wide range of modern thought and thinkers from 1860, when Charles Darwinâs Origin of Species was published in the United States, to the end of the twentieth century. The focus of this volume is on the destabilizing effects of modern challenges to notions of fixed order and absolute truths, and the contradictory consequences for philosophical, political, social, and aesthetic thought. The intellectual response to the unprecedented changes of this era produced visions of both liberation from the hierarchies of the past and new forms of control and constraint. One of the central contradictions in modern thought was between biological and cultural ideas of social, psychological, and moral order. This is the first work to provide an interpretive vision of the entire period under consideration. Topics covered include evolutionary thought, philosophical Pragmatism, ideas of race and Trade ReviewIt will not surprise anyone acquainted with Dan Wickberg that he has written a magisterial history of the rise of modern ways of thinking in the United States. The book tracks Americans’ quest, since the mid-nineteenth century, for frameworks to make sense of a newly unsettled and fluid world. But at its core are the deep contradictions marking modernity: the fresh possibilities inherent in indeterminacy on the one hand, and the conceiving of new modes of coercion and unfreedom on the other. Deftly noting intellectual conflicts and cross-currents yet still able to identify the “lenses, categories, and sensibilities” that have remade modern thought, the book sparkles. From his very first chapter specifying what was novel and generative (and what was not) about Darwin’s Origin of Species, to his last—on the dissolving border between the realms of culture and politics in the late twentieth century, unleashing the “culture wars” and much else—Wickberg offers a lucid, compelling, and even gripping retelling of modern American intellectual history.Sarah E. Taylor & Francis Ltd Histories of Fascism and AntiFascism in Australia

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHistories of Fascism and Anti-Fascism in Australia provides a history of fascist movements and anti-fascist resistance in Australia over the past century. In recent years, the far right has become a resurgent force across the globe, resulting in populist parties securing electoral victories, social movements organising on the streets, and acts of right-wing terrorism. Australia has not been immune to this. However, this is not merely a recent phenomenon; it has a long history of fascist and far-right groups and individuals. These groups have attempted to situate themselves within the wider settler colonial political landscape, often portraying themselves as the inheritors of a violent and exclusionary colonial past. Concurrently, these groups have linked into globalised anti-communist and white supremacist networks. At the same time, Australia has often seen resistance to fascism and the far right, from the political centre to the far left. Covering the period from tTrade Review"This is an original and timely book with a stellar line-up of scholars. While research on the far right and fascism in Australia has grown over the years, anti-fascism and resistance have remained under explored and this book fills this significant gap magnificently."Aurelien Mondon, University of Bath, UK"This collection brings together the leading authorities on fascism and anti-fascism in Australia with a new generation working in the archives. It challenges our inherited understanding of the militant anti-fascism of the 1930s, and the early movements against the White Australia immigration regime. Lively and accessible, it documents the immediate predecessors to the racial populists of our own times, and the generations who resisted them."David Renton, author of No Free Speech for Fascists"In a world where right wing extremism continues to flourish, this history of fascism and anti-fascism is both timely and illuminating. There is an impressive depth of empirical research together with insights drawn from global fascism and anti-fascism studies, and it’s all told with clarity and style. The chapters, by both well-established and emerging scholars, explore in depth the shifting relationships between extremist and mainstream political movements. A key theme is the manner in which Australia’s distinctive forms of racism – expressed in Indigenous and immigration policies, public discourse, and popular culture – have shaped its historical experience of fascist ideas and movements. Histories of Fascism and Anti-Fascism in Australia also explores the achievements as well as the limitations and failures of anti-fascist movements in the past, making for a multi-faceted and nuanced work of history with both scholarly and practical value."Ann Curthoys, Professor Emerita, Australian National University, and co-author with Shino Konishi and Alexandra Ludewig of The Lives and Legacies of a Carceral Island: A Biographical History of Wadjemup/Rottnest IslandTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive introduction to the landscapes of the Middle Ages within and beyond Europe, paying close attention to the relationship between real' and imagined landscapes and the ways that medieval people made and inhabited their world.Rather than studying ''nature'' in the Middle Ages, the book instead examines the spaces that people constructed through soil, stone, and song; water and wasteland; plants and animals; and timber, textiles, and texts, which in turn made up the medieval world. Likewise, the text emphasises a definition of environment that focuses on living with', inviting readers to think about the more-than-human worlds that medieval people depended on, cared for, constructed, and damaged. Bringing together a wide range of primary source material, including evidence from texts, material culture, and visual arts, the book reflects the diversity of landscapes and human responses to them throughout the course of this period and considers the Trade Review'This book provides us with a fascinating insight into medieval perceptions of landscape, enriched with a great diversity of literary and pictorial evidence. In hearing about the communities who occupied these places, and the people who travelled through them, we can see that landscape is not just a physical entity, but a mental construct –"realms real and imagined".'Stephen Rippon, University of Exeter, UK 'This fascinating and wide-ranging volume takes the reader on a journey through the real and imagined landscapes of the Middle Ages – from the enchanted forests of northern Europe myth to the bustling port towns around the Mediterranean. It explores in detail the physicality of different environments in the period, using archaeology, material culture, art and both literary and historical texts to bring to life the huge range of landscapes which medieval people experienced in their daily lives. The thematic chapters are filled with rich details about trade and pilgrimage, movement, power and the natural world – the details drawn from texts originating from across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. This book gives us an insight into the power that different environments had to shape people’s lives across the globe during this period, and in turn, how people shaped those environments, both real and imaginary, to reflect their changing worldviews and experiences. Book SynopsisNow in its fifth edition, The Italian City Republics illustrates how, from the eleventh century onwards, many Italian towns achieved independence as political entities, unhindered by any centralising power. Until the fourteenth century, when the regimes of individual tyrants' took over in most towns, these communes were the scene of a precocious, and very well-documented, experiment in republican self-government.In this new edition, Trevor Dean has expanded the book's treatment of women and gender, the early history of the communes and the lives of non-élites. Focusing on the typical medium-sized towns rather than the better-known cities, the authors draw on a rich variety of contemporary material, both documentary and literary, to portray the world of the communes, illustrating the patriotism and public spirit as well as the equally characteristic factional strife which was to tear them apart. Book SynopsisThe Transfer of Power Between Presidential Administrations examines the problems that can occur when a new president enters office, with a focus on historical case studies. The transition between presidentsespecially when changing partiesis a wildcard in U.S. foreign policy that often confuses or concerns nations engaged with the United States. Though there are systems in place to ensure information gets passed from one administration to another, ideas and their execution can change dramatically when a new president takes office. Using case studies of six different incoming administrations during the Cold War and 21st century, this book will explore how the successes and failures in presidential transitions have had long-term effects on U.S. foreign policy, grand strategy, and international position. Looking at transitions involving multiple presidents, this book offers a fresh perspective on how foreign policy is formulated and carried out. Book SynopsisJapan at War, 1914â1952 is a synthetic and interpretive history that highlights the centrality of war to the modern Japanese experience. The author argues that war was central to Japanese life in this periodâthe era when Japan rose and fell as a world power. The volume examines how World War I set off profound changes that led to the rise of a politicized military, aggressive imperial expansion, and the militarization of Japanese social, political, and economic life. War was extraordinarily popular, which helped confirm Japanâs aggressive imperialism in the 1930s and war across the Asia-Pacific in the 1940s. It took a defeat by 1945 and occupation through 1952 to undo war as a national concern and to remake Japan into a peaceful nation-state. In telling this story of Japan in war and peace, this book highlights the importance of Japan in the creation of the modern world. This study of political power and its influences in domestic and foreign affairs will be of

Book SynopsisKarl Jaspers (1883â1969) was a German psychiatrist and philosopher and one of the most original European thinkers of the twentieth century. As a major exponent of existentialism in Germany, he had a strong influence on modern theology, psychiatry and philosophy. He was Hannah Arendtâs supervisor before her emigration to the United States in the 1930s and himself experienced the consequences of Nazi persecution. He was removed from his position at the University of Heidelberg in 1937, due to his wife being Jewish.Published in 1949, the year in which the Federal Republic of Germany was founded, The Origin and Goal of History is a vitally important book. It is renowned for Jaspers' theory of an 'Axial Age', running from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE. Jaspers argues that this period witnessed a remarkable flowering of new ways of thinking that appeared in Persia, India, China and the Greco-Roman world, in striking parallel development but without any obvious direct cultural contact between them. Jaspers identifies key thinkers from this age, including Confucius, Buddha, Zarathustra, Homer and Plato, who had a profound influence on the trajectory of future philosophies and religions. For Jaspers, crucially, it is here that we see the flowering of diverse philosophical beliefs such as scepticism, materialism, sophism, nihilism, and debates about good and evil, which taken together demonstrate human beings' shared ability to engage with universal, humanistic questions as opposed to those mired in nationality or authoritarianism. At a deeper level, The Origin and Goal of History provides a crucial philosophical framework for the liberal renewal of German intellectual life after 1945, and indeed of European intellectual life more widely, as a shattered continent attempted to find answers to what had happened in the preceding years. • Fascists in Exile

Taylor & Francis Ltd Fascists in Exile

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFascists in Exile tells the extraordinary story of the war criminals, collaborators and fascist ultranationalists who were resettled in Australia by the International Refugee Organisation between 1947 and 1952. It explores the far-right backgrounds and continuing political activism of these displaced persons in Australia, adding to our knowledge of the development of Australian anti-communism in the 1950s. These individuals argued that they had been caught between National Socialism and Soviet communism. What might that have meant for their migration and resettlement trajectories? Beyond âNazi-hunting,â what can this tell us about the challenge they posed to international and national forms, both in Europe and in Australia? This book demonstrates that fascist ideation could not only survive the warâs end but that it continued to be transnational and transcultural. At the same time, anti-fascist protests and then the war crimes investigations of the late 1980s exposed problematic pasts, a legacy with which Australia is still reckoning. The text will appeal to those with an interest in the far right, Australian migration and refugee issues. Trade Review“Jayne Persian’s book provides a gripping narrative of how war criminals entered Australia after 1945 and the lengthy debates that ensued. Sadly, as fascist ideologies spread once again, Persian’s searching account of Australia’s war crimes programme is both timely and instructive.”Martin Dean, War Crimes Historian “Jayne Persian vividly recounts the post-1945 resettlement of Displaced Persons including individuals who managed to conceal their wartime collaboration and complicity in war crimes. She reflects on the legacy of concealment and subsequent fitful attempts to prosecute when, decades later, the Australian government ceased turning a blind eye. Her book is a notable achievement and deserves to be widely read.”Peter Gatrell, Professor, University of Manchester, UK“Given the passage of time, one would have expected that World War II would have been confined to the dustbin of history. Yet, given the re-emergence of European fascist organisations, together with the increase of antisemitism, Jayne Persian’s new book, Fascists in Exile, is an important and timely publication. As recently demonstrated, the Croatian Ustase is alive and well in Australia. Persian’s concise account of the post-war Australian migration policies through the International Refugee Organisation sheds light on the origins of these fascist movements in Australia. It is a valuable, timely and important contribution to the literature.”Suzanne Rutland, Professor Emeritus, University of Sydney, Australia“An important book that, on the basis of solid archival work, clearly and fairmindedly illuminates a key aspect of the history of the Right in Australia in the second half of the twentieth century. This is the story of migrants from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union whose participation in Nazi war crimes in the Second World War, at first largely concealed from Australian view, were finally after decades subject to (unsuccessful) prosecution. But it is also the story of how the migrants’ anti-communist and anti-Soviet concerns, notably in the “Captive Nations” movement, impacted Australian anti-communism and thus helped to shape Australian politics”Sheila Fitzpatrick, Professor, Australian Catholic University, AustraliaTable of ContentsIntroduction Prologue: War Criminals, Collaborators, Quislings and Traitors 1. Book SynopsisThis volume tells the story of the Helsinki Process from the immediate post-war period through the signing of the Helsinki Final Act in 1975 to the collapse of the Soviet empire and up to the present day. Treating it as a single narrative in the search for a just and stable order in Europe adds significantly to the copious but mostly narrowly focused academic literature on the subject.Divided into 26 chapters, it can also serve as a handy reference book for different phases of the story. Chapter 22 examines the continuing debate over whether the West is responsible for the breakdown of relations with Russia and why the Helsinki Process failed to avert it. Chapter 26 asks whether the remarkable multilateral diplomacy that produced the Final Act could be replicated in other troubled areas today. It then offers 12 lessons that may be drawn from that experience.Defrosting the Cold War and Beyond: An Introduction to the Helsinki Process, 19542022 will help stude

Book SynopsisWhat was life like in England before the Industrial Revolution? The World We Have Lost is widely regarded as a classic of historical writing and a vital book in reshaping our understanding of the past and the structure of family life in England. Turning away from the prevailing fixation of history on a grand scale, Laslett instead asks some simple yet fundamental questions about England before the Industrial Revolution: How long did people live? How did they treat their children? Did they get enough to eat? What were the levels of literacy? His findings overturned much received wisdom: girls did not generally marry in their early teens, but often worked before marrying at much the same ages that young people marry today. Most people did not live in extended families, or even live their whole lives in the same villages. Going beyond the immediate structure of the family, he also explores the position of servants, the gentry, rates of migration, work and social mobility. Laslettâs classic work was crucial in causing an important sociological turn in early modern English history and remains as fresh and exhilarating today as upon its first publication. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Foreword by Kevin SchÃrer.Trade Review"Peter Laslett’s greatest gift as his best-known book, The World We Have Lost, suggests, was more for evocation than analysis: to bring back to life, in all their confusion, ingenuity and suffering, the human beings who have long gone.£ - John Dunn, The Independent"The outcome of years of research…transformed our knowledge of the English family…Laslett showed how life in pre-industrial society was no idyll." - The Telegraph"Peter Laslett’s greatest gift as his best-known book, The World We Have Lost, suggests, was more for evocation than analysis: to bring back to life, in all their confusion, ingenuity and suffering, the human beings who have long gone." - John Dunn, The Independent"The outcome of years of research…transformed our knowledge of the English family…Laslett showed how life in pre-industrial society was no idyll." - The TelegraphTable of ContentsForeword to the Routledge Classics Edition Kevin Schürer Introduction 1. Book SynopsisThis book provides an accessible introduction to a wide range of concerns that have preoccupied historians over time. Global in scope, it explores historical perspectives not only from historiography itself but from related areas such as literature, sociology, geography and anthropology which have entered into productive dialogues with history.Clearly written and accessible, this third edition is fully revised with an updated structure and new areas of historical enquiry and themes added, including the history of emotions, video history and global pandemics. In all of this, the authors have attempted to think beyond the boundaries of the West and consider varied approaches to history. They do so by engaging with theoretical perspectives and methodologies that have provided the foundation for good historical practice. The authors analyse how historians can improve their skills by learning about the discipline of historiography, that is, how historians go about the task Table of ContentsPart 1: Philosophies 1. Book SynopsisWhen Korea began as a newly independent state in 1948, its economy was very underdeveloped and the rule of law was just established. The journey of democratization in Korea was not without challenges. This book traces the history of the legal philosophy development in Korea and highlights Korea's unique experience. This book shows how Western legal philosophy has been accepted in Korea, a non-Western country that has newly introduced the Western legal system and what role the legal philosophy has played in social context. The book also examines academic scholars' intellectual activities in a historical context and how their intellectual products are yielded through their continuous response to the circumstances of the time. It specifically looks at the many challenging tasks legal philosophers had to overcome in a society when the rule of law and democracy had not yet settled. The book explores how Korean legal philosophers coped during such unique historical situations. It a

Book SynopsisThis groundbreaking study, among the earliest syntheses on female homosexuality throughout Antiquity, explores the topic with careful reference to ancient concepts and views, drawing fully on the existing visual and written record including literary, philosophical, and scientific documents.Even today, ancient female homosexuals are still too often seen in terms of a mythical, ethereal Sapphic love, or stereotyped as Amazons or courtesans. Boehringer''s scholarly book replaces these clichés with rigorous, precise analysis of iconography and texts by Sappho, Plato, Ovid, Juvenal, and many other lyric poets, satirists, and astrological writers, in search of the prevailing norms, constraints, and possibilities for erotic desire. The portrait emerges of an ancient society to which today''s sexual categories do not applya society before sexualitywhere female homosexuality looks very different, but is nonetheless very real. Now available in English for the first time, Table of ContentsList of figures; Note to the reader and translator's note; Preface to the English Translation (2020), by Sandra Boehringer; Preface to Sandra Boehringer, L’Homosexualité féminine dans l’Antiquité grecque et romaine, Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 2007, by David Halperin; Acknowledgements; Abbreviations; Introduction; I. The book draws on a multilayered framework that builds on and integrates work from both critical discourse analysis and social semiotic traditions, as well as the work of philosophers such as Habermas, Weber, and Rousseau, to show how it might be applied in practice to analyse and understand myriad forms of discourse. The volume focuses on examples from political campaign spots, which highlight various modes, including images, film, oratory, and color, but are also of global relevance and scale, highlighting their unique and complex position at the nexus between legitimation and multimodality. Despite its Orientalist origins, the field of Islamic art has continued to evolve and shape our understanding of the various civilizations of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Situated in this field, this book addresses how universities, museums, and other educational institutions can continue to challenge stereotypical or homogeneous notions of Islam and Islamic art. It reviews subtle and overt mythologies through scholarly research, museum collections and exhibitions, classroom perspectives, and artistsâ initiatives. Each chapter in the book approaches the empirical from a different angle, illuminating contemporary views and uses of the archaeological material in interpretations and theory building. The inclusion of differing perspectives in this collection mirrors the conceptual landscape that characterizes the discipline, contributing to the theoretical debate in archaeology and classical studies. As well as giving an important snapshot of the practical as well as theoretical uses of materiality in archaeologies today, this volume looks to the future of archaeology as an empirical discipline. From Genesis to Kings, the books of the Bible may have been written by a single author, a Hellenized Judean scholar who used Plato's ideal state in The Laws as a primary source. As such, biblical Israel is a recreation of that twelve tribes State and the stories surrounding the birth, life and death of that State were inspired by Greek epics. Book SynopsisThe study is an intellectual and comparative history of French, Spanish, and English missions to the native peoples of America in the seventeenth century, c. 1610â1690. It shows that missions are ideal case studies to properly understand the relationship between religion and politics in early modern Catholic and Calvinist thought. The book aims to analyse the intellectual roots of fundamental ideas in Catholic and Calvinist missionary writingsâamong others idolatry, conversion, civility, and policeâby examining the classical, Augustinian, neo-thomist, reformed Protestant, and contemporary European influences on their writings. Missionariesâ insistence on the necessity of reform, emphasising an experiential, practical vision of Christianity, led them to elaborate conversion strategies that encompassed not only religious, but also political and social changes. It was at the margins of empire that the essentials of Calvinist and Catholic soteriologies and political thought could be enacted and crystallised. By a careful analysis of these missiologies, the study thus argues that missionariesâ common strategiesâhabituation, segregation, social and political regulationsâstem from a shared intellectual heritage, classical, humanist, and above all concerned with the Erasmian ideal of a reformation of manners. • The Counts of Tripoli and Lebanon in the Twelfth

Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) The Counts of Tripoli and Lebanon in the Twelfth

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe county of Tripoli in what is now North Lebanon is arguably the most neglected of the so-called âcrusader statesâ established in the Middle East at the beginning of the twelfth century. The present work is the first monograph on the county to be published in English, and the first in any western language since 1945. What little has been written on the subject previously has focused upon the European ancestry of the counts of Tripoli: a specifically Southern French heritage inherited from the famous crusader Raymond IV of Saint-Gilles. Kevin Lewis argues that past historians have at once exaggerated the political importance of the countsâ French descent and ignored the more compelling signs of its cultural impact, highlighting poetry composed by troubadours in Occitan at Tripoliâs court. For Lewis, however, even this belies a deeper understanding of the processes that shaped the county. What emerges is an intriguing portrait of the county in which its rulers struggled to exert their power over Lebanon in the face of this regionâs insurmountable geographical forces and its sometimes bewildering, always beguiling diversity of religions, languages and cultures. The counts of Tripoli and contemporary Muslim onlookers certainly viewed the dynasty as sons of Saint-Gilles, but the countyâs administration relied upon Arabic, its stability upon the mixed loyalties of its local inhabitants, and its very existence upon the rugged mountains that cradled it. This book challenges prevailing knowledge of this little-known crusader state and by extension the medieval Middle East as a whole..Table of ContentsList of FiguresPrefaceAcknowledgementsList of AbbreviationsIntroduction Sons of Saint-Gilles1 The Succession of Cousins: Counts Raymond I (1103–05), William Jordan (1105–09) and Bertrand (1109–12)2 The Forging and Freedom of the County: Count Pons (1112–37)3 Military Decline and Matrimonial Discord: Count Raymond II (1137–52)4 Count and Captive: Count Raymond III (1152–74)5 The Regent Thwarted: Count Raymond III (1174–87)Conclusion Alien and NativeAppendix 1 SourcesAppendix 2 Troubadour poetry and TripoliBibliographyIndex

  • The Pursuit of History

Taylor & Francis The Pursuit of History

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis classic introduction to the study of history invites the reader to stand back and consider some of its most fundamental questions â what is the point of studying history? How do we know about the past? Does an objective historical truth exist and can we ever access it?In answering these central questions, John Tosh argues that, despite the impression of fragmentation created by Postmodernism in recent years, history is a coherent discipline which still bears the imprint of its nineteenth-century origins. Consistently clear-sighted, he provides a lively and compelling guide to a complex and sometimes controversial subject, while making his readers vividly aware of just how far our historical knowledge is conditioned by the character of the sources and the methods of the historians who work on them.History does not stand still, and this updated seventh edition deals with complex and wide-ranging material in a clear and accessible way that is up-to-date with current historiographical trends. A fuller treatment is given to the importance of digitization both in the section on source criticism and in relation to public history, reflecting its growing importance within historical study. Both the text and references have been expanded to include a fuller range of both American and global scholarship, and the book concludes with a forthright reminder that historical perspective illuminates major problems in the present.Lucid and engaging, this edition retains the user-friendly features that make it a favourite with both students and lecturers, including marginal glosses, illustrations and suggestions for further reading. Along with its companion website, this is an essential guide to the theory and practice of history.Trade ReviewPraise for the previous edition:"This exceptionally insightful book makes the study of history a joy to read. Tosh maps out the major questions and developments in historiography with extraordinary clarity, guiding the reader on debates and methods of research in concise and informative ways. His continued attention to up‐dating the book without doubt makes it a critical text for undergraduates and an essential resource for postgraduates and scholars."Catherine Dewhirst, University of Southern Queensland, Australia"John Tosh’s book is the most useful introduction to recent historiography now available. It surveys major trends and achievements more clearly and concisely than its main competitors, and is an excellent and easy resource for contextualising other historical writings of all kinds. It can add a great deal to students’ understanding of historical writing."Nicholas Karn, University of Southampton, UK"The Pursuit of History has many strengths. It is extremely well‐written and lucid. It strikes a very nice balance between tracing historiography, delineating historical methodology, and discussing the major historiographical developments over the last few decades. Comprehensive, insightful and conversant with the latest historiographical currents, it is essential reading in any undergraduate or graduate theory and method course."Thomas W. Gallant, University of California, San Diego, USA"John Tosh’s Pursuit of History was so far ahead of the game on its first publication that much of the profession are only just now catching up with his wonderfully diverse and pluralistic approach to the study of the past. This new edition promises to equip and inspire the next generations of historians once again very much for the better."Richard Sheldon, University of Bristol, UK"Tosh’s Pursuit of History, in its newest edition, remains the definitive introduction to historical criticism and historiography. Well‐structured, up‐to‐date, highly readable and drawing on a wealth of fascinating illustrative material from the author’s own research, it stands out as the best text combining fundamental method with key theoretical approaches and research trends."William L. Chew III, Vesalius College, Brussels, Belgium"The sixth edition of John Tosh’s The Pursuit of History is a clearly written, informative and absorbing introduction to the practice of ‘doing’ history. While retaining the most useful features of earlier editions of the book, this latest edition introduces new, valuable material on public history, digitised sources, historical controversies, transnational history and the nature of the archive. Book SynopsisA poignant memoir exploring small town baseball as a lens into what?s right and wrong with modern America?written by an acclaimed journalist and Army Ranger who, after returning from Iraq to a painfully divided country, rediscovered its core values in the bleachers of a minor league ballpark in Batavia, New York. What happens when a minor league team?the heart and soul of a Rust Belt town in western New York?is shut down by the billionaires who run Major League Baseball?Batavia, New York?between Rochester and Buffalo?hosted its first professional baseball game in 1897. Despite decades of deindustrialization and evaporating middle-class jobs, the Batavia Muckdogs endured. When Major League Baseball cravenly shut them down in 2020?along with forty-one other minor league teams?the town fought back, reviving the Muckdogs as a summer league team comprised of college players. As MLB considers further cuts and private equity buys up what remains, the mom-and-pop operations once prevalent in baseball are endangered. But for now, the sights and sounds of local baseball live on in Batavia?cheap draft beer and hot dogs, starry-eyed kids seeking autographs, and breathtaking summer sunsets. With a vibrant, unforgettable cast of characters?from a librarian and her best friend whose relationship deepens with every ?crepuscular hour? they spend together in the bleachers, to the former hockey brawler-turned team owner who greets regulars while working the concession stand, to the iconoclastic writer with a contagious love for his struggling hometown?Bardenwerper?s Homestand exposes the beating heart of small town America, friends and neighbors coming together as the crack of the bat echoes in the summer twilight.

Book SynopsisA forester's enlightening journey to uncover the story behind Canada's iconic sweet nectar. Blending history, culture, science and personal reflection, this illustrated love letter to maple syrup will appeal to fans of Canadiana and those interested in how maple syrup became Canada's obsession.Maple syrup flows through the spirit of Canada and has done so since it was first extracted from the forests by Indigenous Peoples. In eastern Canada, especially in the heart of maple syrup country in Quebec, the arrival of sugaring off-season in spring offers an excuse for feasts with dancing in the cabanes à sucre, or sugar shacks. But behind the parties lies a high-tech, high-stakes business. A cartel controls every aspect of the syrup cycle in Quebec and decides who may make maple syrup, where and how much. To skirt this iron grip, sugar bush rebels sneak their barrels of syrup out of Quebec in the dark of night, risking crippling fines and banishment from the syrup business. In Maple Syrup, forester and journalist Peter Kuitenbrouwer leads us through the sugar maple forests, from the syrup's semi-legendary beginnings to its commercial explosion and global conquest, weaving in his own story of tapping the forest along the way. For him, sugaring off is a magical season, when the days start to get longer and the snow begins to melt. It signals a time of togetherness and shared experience as his family battles the elements in the indomitable forest to produce bottles of pure, golden, delicious sweetener.

Book SynopsisA New York Times Bestseller A revolution is under way.Trade Review"Fascinating." -- Thomas L. Friedman - New York Times"A terrific book. Brynjolfsson and McAfee combine their knowledge of rapidly evolving digital technologies and relevant economics to give us a colorful and accessible picture of dynamic forces that are shaping our lives, our work, and our economies. For those who want to learn to 'Race with the Machines,' their book is a great place to start." -- Michael Spence, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences"How we build, use, and live with our digital creations will define our success as a civilization in the twenty-first century. Will our new technologies lift us all up or leave more and more of us behind? The Second Machine Age is the essential guide to how and why that success will, or will not, be achieved." -- Garry Kasparov, thirteenth World Chess Champion"Erik and Andy have lived on the cutting edge, and now, with this book, they are taking us there with them. A brilliant look at the future that technology is bringing to our economic and social lives. Read The Second Machine Age if you want to prepare yourself and your children for the world of work ahead." -- Zoë Baird, president, Markle Foundation"The Second Machine Age offers important insights into how digital technologies are transforming our economy, a process that has only just begun. Erik and Andrew’s thesis: As massive technological innovation radically reshapes our world, we need to develop new business models, new technologies, and new policies that amplify our human capabilities, so every person can stay economically viable in an age of increasing automation. I couldn’t agree more." -- Reid Hoffman, cofounder/chairman of LinkedIn and coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Start-up of You"Although a few others have tried, The Second Machine Age truly helped me see the world of tomorrow through exponential rather than arithmetic lenses. Macro and microscopic frontiers now seem plausible, meaning that learners and teachers alike are in a perpetual mode of catching up with what is possible. It frames a future that is genuinely exciting!" -- Clayton M. Christensen, Kim B. Clark Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School, and author of The Innovator’s Dilemma"Brynjolfsson and McAfee are right: we are on the cusp of a dramatically different world brought on by technology. The Second Machine Age is the book for anyone who wants to thrive in it. I’ll encourage all of our entrepreneurs to read it, and hope their competitors don’t." -- Marc Andreessen, cofounder of Netscape and Andreessen Horowitz"What globalization was to the economic debates of the late 20th century, technological change is to the early 21st century. Long after the financial crisis and great recession have receded, the issues raised in this important book will be central to our lives and our politics." -- Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor at Harvard University"Technology is overturning the world’s economies, and The Second Machine Age is the best explanation of this revolution yet written." -- Kevin Kelly, senior maverick for Wired and author of What Technology Wants"Brynjolfsson and McAfee take us on a whirlwind tour of innovators and innovations around the world. But this isn’t just casual sightseeing. Along the way, they describe how these technological wonders came to be, why they are important, and where they are headed." -- Hal Varian, chief economist at Google"In this optimistic book Brynjolfsson and McAfee clearly explain the bounty that awaits us from intelligent machines. But they argue that creating the bounty depends on finding ways to race with the machine rather than racing against the machine. That means people like me need to build machines that are easy to master and use. Ultimately, those who embrace the new technologies will be the ones who benefit most." -- Rodney Brooks, chairman and CTO of Rethink Robotics, Inc"New technologies may bring about our economic salvation or they may threaten our very livelihoods…or they may do both. Brynjolfsson and McAfee have written an important book on the technology-driven opportunities and challenges we all face in the next decade. Anyone who wants to understand how amazing new technologies are transforming our economy should start here." -- Austan Goolsbee, professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers"After reading this book, your world view will be flipped: you’ll see that collective intelligence will come not only from networked brains but also from massively connected and intelligent machines. In the near future, the best job to have will be the one you would do for free." -- Nicholas Negroponte, cofounder of the MIT Media Lab, founder of One Laptop per Child, and author of Being Digital"The Second Machine Age helps us all better understand the new age we are entering, an age in which by working with the machine we can unleash the full power of human ingenuity. This provocative book is both grounded and visionary, with highly approachable economic analyses that add depth to their vision. A must-read." -- John Seely Brown, coauthor of The Power of Pull and A New Culture of Learning"Brynjolfsson and McAfee do an amazing job of explaining the progression of technology, giving us a glimpse of the future, and explaining the economics of these advances. And they provide sound policy prescriptions. Their book could also have been titled Exponential Economics 101—it is a must-read." -- Vivek Wadhwa, director of research at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering and author of The Immigrant Exodus"Fascinating." -- Andrew Leonard - Salon"Maddeningly reasonable and readable." -- Thomas Claburn - InformationWeek"Excellent." -- Clive Cook - Bloomberg"Optimistic and intriguing." -- Steven Pearlstein - The Washington Post"My favorite book so far of 2014. Both hopeful…and realistic." -- Joshua Kim - Inside Higher Education"Information technology is the foundation of the next industrial revolution. Its often unarticulated dark side has been the widening of the economic divide. In this book, McAfee and Brynjolfsson do a masterful job of exploring both the promise of computer technology and its profound societal impact." -- Carl Bass, CEO of Autodesk

It is a beautiful thing to hold and feel, and it presents a fine argument for the retention of paper as an aesthetically lusty object, let alone one that’s thrived through centuries of change." -- The Observer"Kurlansky expertly argues a case for its [paper's] continuing survival." -- The Scotsman"Kurlansky... explains how something so simple came to play such a vital part in history." -- The Sunday Business Post"Paper is not what you would call a learned book, but one learns an awful lot from it, all packaged in Kurlansky’s whipsmart prose." -- The Times

It is readable, admiring and compact, and provides a narratively energetic look at a man who suffered many of the same weaknesses as his characters — for booze, benzedrine, depression and bad marriages... Souder writes well, and this is a good place to start reading (or rereading) about Steinbeck." -- Scott Bradfield - The Spectator"A comprehensive new biography of America’s best-known novelist of the Great Depression arrives at a timely moment." -- 17 New Books to Watch For in October - The New York Times"Souder’s sympathy for Steinbeck… is most effective and eloquent in his depiction of the California landscape or of the sea, which he describes as swimming with small pelagic crabs “like a crimson carpet spread across an ocean the color of lapis lazuli"." -- Brenda Wineapple - The New York Times Book Review"Painstakingly researched, psychologically nuanced, unshowy, lucid... "No one has written a better book about a city…Nature's Metropolis is elegant testimony to the proposition that economic, urban, environmental, and business history can be as graceful, powerful, and fascinating as a novel." —Kenneth T. Jackson, Boston GlobeTrade Review"This book is the story of Chicago's progress in the 19th century, the rough seduction of the hinterland, and how at its zenith the city ruled the commercial life of a vast inland region more completely and ruthlessly and profitably than any czar ruled Russia…A marvelous book." -- Ward Just - Chicago Tribune"Thoroughly original…Illuminating…Brilliant." -- Donald L. Miller - New York Times Book Review"No one has ever written a better book about a city…No one has written about Chicago with more power, clarity and intelligence than Cronon." -- Kenneth T. Jackson - Boston Globe"An intoxicating piece of scholarship and enterprise…It is really a work of biography: a look at the life of Chicago." -- David Shribman - Wall Street Journal"Nature's Metropolis is that rare historical work which treats nature and the moral force we derive from it seriously…The roots of the modern environmental predicament are plainly visible in the economic dynamism that brought about the rise of Chicago in the mid-nineteenth century, which is a captivating story in its own right." -- Verlyn Klinkenborg - The New Yorker"Magnificent…the best work of economic and business history I've ever read." -- Paul Krugman"William Cronon challenges many of the conventions of both urban and western history in this pathbreaking book, and does so with unusual intelligence and elegance.
