Cambridge University Press The Leper King and his Heirs Baldwin IV and the
Book SynopsisThe reign of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem (1174â85) has traditionally been seen as a period of decline when, because of the king's illness, power came to be held by unsuitable men who made the wrong policy decisions. Notably, they ignored the advice of Raymond of Tripoli and attacked Saladin, who was prepared to keep peace with the Franks while uniting the Islamic near east under his rule. This book challenges that view, arguing that peace with Saladin was not a viable option for the Franks; that the young king, despite suffering from lepromatous leprosy (the most deadly form of the disease) was an excellent battle leader who strove with some success to frustrate Saladin's imperial ambitions; that Baldwin had to remain king in order to hold factions in check; but that the society over which he presided was, contrary to what is often said, vigorous and self-confident.Trade Review' … compelling … the book stands as a gifted work and one of the best introductions to the world of the Latin East produced to date.' Cambridge University Press Immigration Ethnicity and National Identity in Brazil 1808 to the Present
Book SynopsisImmigration, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Brazil, 1808 to the Present examines the immigration to Brazil of millions of Europeans, Asians and Middle Easterners beginning in the nineteenth century. Jeffrey Lesser analyzes how these newcomers and their descendants adapted to their new country and how national identity was formed as they became Brazilians.Trade Review'A crowning achievement by the premier historian of immigration to Brazil. In this highly readable book, Lesser shows how immigrants from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East helped create new ways of being white, of being nonwhite, and of being Brazilian, and in so doing, helped create modern Brazil.' George Reid Andrews, University of Pittsburgh'Jeff Lesser is on intimate terms with Brazilian history and is an authoritative guide to this topic. His new overview of immigration to Brazil will richly reward its readership. [He] studies immigration as a process, not simply an event. [He] concentrates on the immigrants' interactions with the state and their participation in larger social and political currents. This is better than the older approach that tends to isolate immigrants (usually a single ethnic group) in the mind's eye, focusing on what they did not share with non-immigrants. In sum, Lesser shows us that to pull immigrants out of Brazil's living collage is to misunderstand them and their experience. Highly recommended!' John Charles Chasteen, University of North CarolinaThis fascinating and lively book teaches us that to understand ethnicity and immigration we must consider Brazil, and to understand Brazil we must consider immigration and ethnicity.' Jerry Dávila, University of Illinois'Jeffrey Lesser masterfully surveys the history of immigration to Brazil (and to some extent, from Brazil) through the lens of ethnicity. He has digested a vast literature in English and Portuguese to produce a concise and well-crafted volume that will become the standard survey of the subject.' Marshall C. Eakin, Vanderbilt University'In this engaging and provocative book, historian Jeffrey Lesser demonstrates how central immigration has been, and continues to be, in struggles over Brazilian national identity. Weaving together his prodigious knowledge of postcolonial Brazilian history and the diverse experiences of the many immigrant ethnic groups in Brazil, Lesser produces a portrait of Brazilian society since independence that challenges and revises both scholarly and popular notions of what it means to be Brazilian.' Barbara Weinstein, New York University'This book is accessible enough for the general reader, though the best use will be in an undergraduate course on Brazilian history or a course on race and ethnicity in Brazil or Latin America more broadly.' Cambridge University Press Cultural Memory and Early Civilization
Book SynopsisNow available to an English-speaking audience, this book presents a groundbreaking theoretical analysis of memory, identity and culture. Dr Assmann defines two theoretical concepts of cultural memory and applies this theoretical framework to case studies of four specific cultures, concluding that memory can be a powerful and dynamic tool in shaping culture.Trade Review'Jan Assmann's work on cultural memory is essential for notions of memory and memorialization. I know of no modern scholarly study on collective memory and aspects relating to it, from Thucydides to modern Israel, from Genesis to modern Germany, that has not in some form drawn on Jan Assmann's theories on the relation between collective and cultural memory. In short, this book is an absolute classic, and will be invaluable to English-speaking scholars.' Susanna Elm, University of California, Berkeley'More than canonical since its original publication in Germany, Cultural Memory and Early Civilization is one of the most important works of cultural analysis of the past two decades. Spanning cultural and media studies, sociology, ancient history, and numerous other fields, it has already underwritten volumes of research and theory in Europe. University of California Press Songs of Experience
Book SynopsisPresents the history of Western ideas about the nature of human experience. This book explores Western discourse since the sixteenth century onwards, asking why the concept of experience has been such a magnet for controversy.Trade Review"Few in the humanities can rival Jay's omnivorousness or match his intellectual energy." - Terry Eagleton, London Review of Books "Songs of Experience is at once modest and extraordinarily ambitious. The erudition on display in this sweeping account of a central concept in Western philosophy over several hundred years is a wonder; the writing is clear, and the scholarship breathtaking. But it is modest in the sense that it does not announce its own point of view with any emphasis. Instead, the reader benefits from the author's openness to thinkers as unalike as Schleiermacher and Rorty, Oakeshott and Bataille. Jay makes sense of each thinker on his own terms - and that's because with his intellectual openness and his conceptual mediation, Jay indeed practices what he is so lightly preaching. An intellectual historian at the top of his game, he has shared his own experience of these ideas, texts, and writers. After reading this book, we can too." - Michael Roth, Bookforum "A magisterial study of one of the most elusive, contested, and pervasively important concepts of the Western philosophical tradition." - Richard Shusterman, author of Pragmatist Aesthetics"Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. The result is a eureka of comprehension, a minor miracle of scholarship and argument. Fredrik Logevall has written a great book. Vietnam studies will never be the same. May he win all the prizes." - Robert Anderson, Philadelphia Inquirer "The finest history to date of America's decisions to escalate war in Vietnam. More than just a Vietnam book, Choosing War offers a rare and beautifully crafted example of how to study a turning point in history." - Philip Zelikow, Foreign Affairs "Compendious and persuasive." - Jonathan Mirsky, New York Review of Books "Stunning in its research and highly sophisticated in its analysis, Choosing War is far and away the best study we have of Lyndon Johnson's escalation of the conflict in Vietnam." - George C. Oxford University Press Inc Tutankhamun and the Tomb that Changed the World
Book SynopsisIt is often thought that the story of Tutankhamun ended when the thousands of dazzling items discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon were transported to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and put on display. But there is far more to the boy-king''s story. Tutankhamun and the Tomb that Changed the World explores the 100 years of research on Tutankhamun that have taken place since the tomb''s discovery, from the several objects in the tomb made of meteoritic iron that came from outer space to new evidence that shows that Tutankhamun may actually have been a warrior who went into battle. Author Bob Brier also takes readers behind the scenes of the recent CT-scans of Tutankhamun''s mummy to reveal more secrets of the young pharaoh. The book also illustrates the wide-ranging impact the discovery of Tutankhamun''s tomb had on fields beyond Egyptology. Brier examines how the discovery of the tomb influenced Egyptian politics and contributed to the downfall of colonialism in Egypt. Outside Egypt, the modern blockbuster exhibitions that raise great sums of monies for museums around the world all began with Tutankhamun, as did the idea of documenting every object discovered in place before it was moved. And to a great extent, the modern fascination with ancient Egypt was also greatly promoted by the Tutmania that surrounded the discovery of the tomb. Deeply informed by the latest research and presented in vivid detail, Tutankhamun and the Tomb that Changed the World is a compelling introduction to the world''s greatest archaeological discovery.

Cambridge University Press The Art and Archaeology of Ancient Greece
Book SynopsisThis richly illustrated, four-colour textbook introduces the art and archaeology of ancient Greece, from the Bronze Age through to the Roman conquest. Emphasizing context and function, Barringer explores the purpose and use of buildings and objects within their particular time and place, leading students to a rich sociohistorical understanding of Greek art.Trade Review'This book is a superb resource for students and teachers of ancient Greek art specifically and the ancient Greek world as a whole. Barringer strikes an ideal balance between brevity and depth, leaving just enough room between the sentences for dialogue, discussion, and discourse. No mere survey, this important new text goes out of its way to problematize traditional narratives and point to the hidden riches and complexities of the field.' Peter Schultz, Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota'There is no lack of good introductions to the art and archaeology of ancient Greece, but Barringer's new book - clearly written and presented, incorporating the latest scholarship, and superbly illustrated (many images are new, unusual and uncommonly instructive in themselves) - will occupy the first rank. The narrative is made to order for undergraduate surveys, but even advanced students and scholars will benefit from the book's succinct and perceptive analyses of the themes, functions and cultural contexts of the major monuments of Greek art and architecture. It is that rare thing: a readable survey that intimates the richness, depth and complexity of its subject.' Jeffrey M. Hurwit, University of OregonTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Cambridge University Press The Evolution of Strategy Thinking War from Antiquity to the Present
Book SynopsisIs there a 'Western way of war' which pursues battles of annihilation and single-minded military victory? Is warfare on a path to ever greater destructive force? This magisterial account answers these questions by tracing the history of Western thinking about strategy - the employment of military force as a political instrument - from antiquity to the present day. Assessing sources from Vegetius to contemporary America, and with a particular focus on strategy since the Napoleonic Wars, Beatrice Heuser explores the evolution of strategic thought, the social institutions, norms and patterns of behaviour within which it operates, the policies that guide it and the cultures that influence it. Ranging across technology and warfare, total warfare and small wars as well as land, sea, air and nuclear warfare, she demonstrates that warfare and strategic thinking have fluctuated wildly in their aims, intensity, limitations and excesses over the past two millennia.Trade Review'This is a real masterpiece. As a history of strategic thinking, ancient and modern, it is comprehensive, learned and authoritative. Its discussion of contemporary issues is shrewd and illuminating. It is lucid, wise, often witty, and above all, deeply humane. It should be essential reading for all students and practitioners of strategy: indeed I doubt whether they will need any other for a long time to come.' Sir Michael Howard, former Regius Professor of Modern History, University of Oxford'Beatrice Heuser has produced a book of immense and unique scholarship. The study provides the most detailed and comprehensive survey yet written on strategic thinking across the ages from Roman times to the contemporary debates about the future of warfare in the twenty-first century. It is essential reading for any serious university or military student of strategic studies or international security.' John Baylis, Emeritus Professor and formerly Pro Vice Chancellor, Swansea University'With this work Beatrice Heuser has made a major contribution. This is much more than just a survey of strategy through the ages, but a deep, intellectual examination of the complex relationships between strategy and war through the course of history.' Williamson Murray, Professor Emeritus of History, Ohio State University'Heuser's history of strategic theory and practice demonstrates extraordinary range, erudition, intelligence, and insight. She appears to have read everything, in many languages, about attempts to apply armed force effectively. The Evolution of Strategy will be the first port of call for those wanting to check up on the development of land strategy in the eighteenth century, maritime strategy in the nineteenth century, nuclear strategy in the twentieth century, or counterinsurgency strategy in the twenty-first century.' Lawrence D. Freedman, Foreign Affairs'Beatrice Heuser … has written one of the most important books on strategy and war to appear in recent years.' H. R. MacMaster, Survival'… Hauser's deeply intellectual analysis of the history of military strategy achieves its aim and achieves it with style. It is comprehensive without being dry, it is intellectual without being geekish and it is authoritative without being academically arrogant … It should be read, digested, considered and appreciated like one would approach a Cuban cigar and cognac in the study or ante-room. The author is to be congratulated for a fine piece of work and a major contribution to the study of strategy.' Dave Mugridge, The Naval Review'There can be no dispute that this is a major work by a recognised authority. Heuser set out to provide a survey of the literature discussing this subject over much of European history and there can be little doubt that she has achieved her aim.' Thames & Hudson Ltd The Incas
Book SynopsisThe Incas built one of the largest empires of the ancient world. The sheer scale makes their achievement truly remarkable. At its zenith it extended northwards from the Inca capital Cusco along the Andes to embrace parts of modern Peru and Ecuador, and southwards into Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Uniquely, the authors look in detail at Cusco and at the four parts of the empire, following the vast road system to explore not just famous sites such as Machu Picchu, but all the major regional settlements. This vivid portrait shows how the Incas ruled some peoples directly but allowed others to maintain their traditional leaders with little interference. The concluding chapter is devoted to the end of the empire: the arrival of the Spaniards, the assassination of the Inca ruler Atawallpa, and the final years of the rebellious, neo-Inca state in the tropical forest of Vilcabamba.Trade Review'A lively, deeply informed and highly readable account of the last great empire of pre-Columbian South America' - Gary Urton, Harvard University'I know of no other book in English that provides such a good region by region description of the Inca empire ... Oxford University Press Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Oxford
Book Synopsis''The degradations, the wrongs, the vices, that grow out of slavery, are more than I can describe.''Harriet Jacobs was born a slave in the American South and went on to write one of the most extraordinary slave narratives. First published pseudonymously in 1861, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl describes Jacobs''s treatment at the hands of her owners, her eventual escape to the North, and her perilous existence evading recapture as a fugitive slave. To save herself from sexual assault and protect her children she is forced to hide for seven years in a tiny attic space, suffering terrible psychological and physical pain.Written to expose the appalling treatment of slaves in the South and the racism of the free North, and to advance the abolitionist cause, Incidents is notable for its careful construction and literary effects. Jacobs''s story of self-emancipation and a growing feminist consciousness is the tale of an individual and a searing indictment of slavery''s inhumanity. This edition includes the short memoir by Jacobs''s brother, John S. Jacobs, ''A True Tale of Slavery''.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.Trade ReviewFew accounts of American slavery are as memorable as Jacobs' harrowing memoir. Born a slave in North Carolina in 1813, Harriet was in her teens when her owner, Dr James Norcom, first started to proposition her. Harriet was forced to take refuge in her grandmother's tiny attic for nearly seven years, before finally escaping to the North. R J Ellis's introduction to this latest edition is an insightful overview of the slave narrative for a new generation of readers. * Lesley McDowell, Independent (Radar) *Jacob's story is so dramatic, so illustrative of the horrors of slavery - the sickening violence, the waste of potential, the unpredictability of lives lived according to slave owner's caprices - that is almost reads as a novel * Victoria Segal, The Guardian *It's easy to be appalled at the notion of slavery, but this astonishing account, published in 1861, by Harriet Jacobs, born a slave in the American South, emphasises the personal experience. She makes us feel the minutiae of daily life as a slave. * Lesly McDowell, The Sunday Herald *

Oxford University Press The Future
Book SynopsisFrom the beginning of time, humans have been driven by both a fear of the unknown and a curiosity to know. We have always yearned to know what lies ahead, whether threat or safety, scarcity or abundance. Throughout human history, our forebears tried to create certainty in the unknown, by seeking to influence outcomes with sacrifices to gods, preparing for the unexpected with advice from oracles, and by reading the stars through astrology. As scientific methods improve and computer technology develops we become ever more confident of our capacity to predict and quantify the future by accumulating and interpreting patterns form the past, yet the truth is there is still no certainty to be had. In this Very Short Introduction Jennifer Gidley considers some of our most burning questions: What is the future ?; Is the future a time yet to come?; Or is it a utopian place?; Does the future have a history?; Is there only one future or are there many possible futures? She asks if the future can ever be truly predicted or if we create our own futures - both hoped for and feared - by our thoughts, feelings, and actions, and concludes by analysing how we can learn to study the future.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area.
