    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCasi Raja Pundit, a mutasaddi or secretary in the service of Suja-ud-daula, Vazir of Oudh, was present at the third battle of Panipat and wrote an account of it in Persian. His account was translated into English in 1791 by Lt. Col. James Brown, Resident at Delhi from 1782 to 1785. The translated account was edited in 1926 with an Introduction, Notes, and Appendices by H. G. Rawlinson, Professor at The Deccan College, Poona. It is the most detailed account we possess of the battle, and is the impartial narrative of an eye-witness of what he saw and heard. The narrative of Casi Raja Pundit brings alive larger than life personalities from history Sadhashivrao Bhao, Ahmed Shah Abdali, and Ibrahim Gardi, among others. The Maratha Empire was the pre-eminent power in the subcontinent in the eighteenth century. In 1761, under the command of Sadashivrao Bhao in the third battle of Panipat, the Marathas lost to Abdali, and Sadashivrao Bhao was killed. However, as H.G. Rawlinson writes in his Introduction, A defeat is, under some circumstances, as honourable as a victory; and never, in all their annals, did the Maratha armies cover themselves with greater glory, than when the flower of the chivalry of the Deccan perished on the stricken field of Panipat, fighting against the enemies of their creed and country.

Book SynopsisThe History of Kerala is a monumental work in four volumes. Chaplain of Cochin (1717-23), Jacobus Canter Visscher wrote descriptive letters to his friends and which were edited and published. K.P. Padmanabha Menon re-edited the English translation of the letters with an extensive and exhaustive commentary. His notes speak eloquently of his wide range of information and study and no less of his power to present the varied material into a highly readable historical narrative. The author has used Visscher''s book as the thread on which to string the ancient history of Kerala. It contains cameos on many of the important events and institutions, customs and manners and the salient features of the region, and of its social, political and economic conditions, based as far as possible, on contemporary records.

Book SynopsisBattlefield India is a chronicle of the near past which tells us how the cycle of chaos repeats itself. The story starts in 1997 on the eve of India's 50th year as an independent nation, and ends in 2022 as free India celebrates its 75th birthday. The political, economic, and social events of the last 25 years are recounted through the voices of people the author has interviewed over the years. These voices include many who shall go down in the history books as legends of this period in India's long history: among others, the man behind the Green Revolution and a member of independent India's Constituent Assembly C Subramaniam, the former President of India R. Venkataraman, the eminent agronomist Dr M''s Swaminathan.

Book SynopsisSixty young men, aged between 14 to 25 storm into the heavily guarded British armoury, loot it and hoist the Indian flag keeping the town independent for three days. Five revolutionaries fight a formidable British force armed only with pistols for hours before they run out of ammunitions. A young woman dressed in men''s uniform barges into the European club in Chittagong with few others and opens fire before being surrounded by the army. Study of recorded history of India''s freedom struggle leaves out multitude of people. In free India, it would be a historical cruelty to ignore the influences of small actions by individuals or groups on our freedom struggle. History is based on and includes the sum of history prior to the period under study. By the same logic, it influences the history of the period that follows. Therefore, to ignore individual or small group actions will be a great injustice to a fair history.

Book SynopsisThe advent of colonialism and its associated developments has been characterized as one of the most defining moments in the history of South Asia. The arrival of Christian missionaries has not only been coeval to colonial rule, but also associated with development in the region. Their encounter, critique, endeavour and intervention have been very critical in shaping South Asian society and culture, even where they did not succeed in converting people. Yet, there is precious little space spared for studying the role and impact of missionary enterprises than the space allotted to colonialism. Isolated individual efforts have focused on Bengal, Madras, Punjab and much remains to be addressed in the context of the unique region of the North East India. In North East India, for example, by the time the British left, a majority of the tribals had abandoned their own faith and adopted Christianity. It was a socio-cultural revolution.

Book SynopsisWhy have relations between India and China, which comprise nearly forty per cent of the world's population, been troubled for over sixty years? A war in 1962 was followed by decades of uneasy peace, but in recent years a rising number of serious military confrontations has underlined their huge and growing differences. This book examines these differences in four crucial areas: their perceptions and prejudices about each other; their continuing disagreements over the border; their changing partnerships with America and Russia; and the growing power asymmetry between them, which affects all aspects of their relationship. China demands deference as a Great Power and the dominant country in Asia, while India wants recognition and respect as an equal. With such a deep divide separating the two neighbours, what does the future hold?

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the late 1960s, between one and two million people were killed by Indonesian president Suharto's army in the name of suppressing communism-and more than fifty years later, the issue of stigmatisation is still relevant for many victims of the violence and their families. The End of Silence presents the stories of these individuals, revealing how many survivors from the period have been so strongly affected by the strategy used by Suharto and his Western allies that these survivors, still afraid to speak out, essentially serve to maintain the very ideology that led to their persecution.Trade Review"The book is a most recommendable piece for readers who are not yet familiar with the massacre of 1965 as well as for those who have already studied the tragedy. The personal accounts render the traumatic incidents an intimate sharing of emotions, but above this personal level, Marching’s distinct analytical approach is a masterful study that indeed symbolises an End of Silence."- Claudia Derichs, International Quarterly for Asian Studies (2020) "A rich and fascinating account of first-hand experience with the anti-communist mass killings and their devastating long-term impact on Indonesian society"- Clemens Six, newbooks.asia (2018) "Marching hopes this collection of victims’ accounts will help prevent the destruction of memories of 1965-1966. • The Youth of Early Modern Women

Amsterdam University Press The Youth of Early Modern Women

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThrough fifteen essays that work from a rich array of primary sources, this collection makes the novel claim that early modern European women, like men, had a youth. European culture recognised that, between childhood and full adulthood, early modern women experienced distinctive physiological, social, and psychological transformations. Drawing on two mutually shaped layers of inquiry — cultural constructions of youth and lived experiences — these essays exploit a wide variety of sources, including literary and autobiographical works, conduct literature, judicial and asylum records, drawings, and material culture. The geographical and temporal ranges traverse England, Ireland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Mexico from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. This volume brings fresh attention to representations of female youth, their own life writings, young women’s training for adulthood, courtship, and the emergent sexual lives of young unmarried women.Trade Review"This engaging collection successfully problematizes and confounds simplistic assumptions regarding the early phases of female existence in early modern Western society. The Youth of Early Modern Women provides a wide range of thought-provoking essays that will, one hopes, inspire similarly creative and innovative research in this field."- Alison Williams Lewin, Renaissance Quarterly, Volume LXXIII, No. 2Table of ContentsTable of Contents List of Illustrations Contributor Notes Introduction Elizabeth S. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents an unforgettable up-close account of the effects of World War II and the subsequent American occupation on Oita prefecture, through firsthand accounts from more than forty Japanese men and women who lived there. The interviewees include students, housewives, nurses, midwives, teachers, journalists, soldiers, sailors, Kamikaze pilots, and munitions factory workers. Their stories range from early, spirited support for the war through the devastating losses of friends and family members to air raids and into periods of hunger and fear of the American occupiers. The personal accounts are buttressed by archival materials; the result is an unprecedented picture of the war as experienced in a single region of Japan.Trade Review"The content [of this volume], based upon forty-three first-hand accounts, presents a range of original and informative perspectives, adding a human dimension to processes and events that are more often covered from a policy or strategic perspective. [...] The work is highly readable and accessible, suggesting its suitability as a potential core text for an undergraduate class on the Japanese population's experience of war and occupation alongside the works of Tessa Morris-Suzuki (Showa, An Inside History of Hirohito's Japan, London, 1984), Samuel Hideo Yamashita (Daily Life in Wartime Japan, 1940-1945, Lawrence, 2015) and Haruko T. and Theodore F. Cook (Japan at War, An Oral History, New York, 1992)." - Thomas French, Canadian Journal of History, Volume 53, No.1, Spring/Summer 2018 "As the oral reminiscences incorporated into this deft and well-crafted historical overview illustrate, however, local residents were at the epicenter of numerous critical occurrences during both WW II and its aftermath. An army regiment involved in the 1933 attack on Nanjing in China; the naval base preparing the fleet for the Pearl Harbor attack; numerous national military and political leaders; a training center for kamikaze pilots“all called Oita home. During the American occupation, a regional command post was located in Beppu, the prefecture’s largest city. Pulling together the recollections of some 40 individuals from Oita and the larger narrative of Japan at war and in defeat thus provides an engaging, critically important, and nicely balanced account of a period in Japanese history often under-acknowledged in Japan itself. Also intriguing: the interplay between important incidents associated with the war and the related individualized remembrances that tie together local experiences and national events. Highly recommended." - Choice Reviews 'An important and worthwhile study!' - moesson, Het Indisch Maandblad, August 2017 (review originally published in Dutch). '[The[ Porters have woven together the memories of students and factory workers, nurses and midwives, teachers, sailors and kamikaze pilots to create a rare account of ordinary life during extraordinary times in the Japanese countryside ... Out of stock

Book SynopsisDisasters are as much cultural as natural phenomena. For centuries, news about catastrophic events has been disseminated through media such as chronicles, pamphlets, newspapers, poems, drawings, and prints. Nowadays, we are overwhelmed with news about the cataclysmic effects of recent forest fires, floods, and storms. Due to the ongoing climate crisis, extreme weather events will likely have ever greater impacts on our lives. This volume addresses cultural representations of catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and earthquakes over the centuries. In the past as now, artists and authors try to make sense of disasters, grasp their impact, and communicate moral, religious, or political messages. These creations reflect and shape how people learn and think about disasters that occur nearby or far away, both in time and space. The parallels between past and present underline how this book contributes to modern debates about cultural and creative strategies in response to disasters.Trade Review“This volume … shows the necessity of a more organic integration of cultural history with other branches of social, economic, political, and environmental history. Book SynopsisGod’s diplomat, the pope of the ecumenical movement, but also an acerbic theologian and a difficult person: this is how journalists characterised Willem Adolf Visser ’t Hooft (1900-1985). He was one of the best-known Dutch theologians outside the Netherlands and he left his mark on the world church. Even at an early age, he made profound efforts in support of international ecumenical youth and student organisations (Dutch Student Christian Movement, YMCA and World Student Christian Federation). He led the World Council of Churches during its formative stages (from 1938), and after its formal establishment in 1948 became its first general secretary, serving until 1966. To Visser ’t Hooft, the unity of the church was both an article of faith and a pragmatic organisation of church influence in a disunited world.Trade Review"La biographie de Zeilstra sur le premier secrétaire général du COÉ est un apport important aux ressources pour l’étude de l’histoire de l’Église du XXe siècle et du mouvement oecuménique : avec un index détaillé des noms et des sujets et de nom-breuses références, ce livre s’avérera inestimable pour les futurs chercheurs."- Stephen Brown, ISTINA LXVI (2021) "Zeilstra has written an impressive study that provides profound insights into the efforts of one man, and through him of a movement, trying in one of the most momentous historical eras to forge church unity. Book SynopsisThe Yale-China Association's long legacy of work in China places it among the premier American organizations engaged in international service. Founded in 1901, Yale-China built on a long tradition of Yale's graduates founding churches, schools, and colleges in far-flung places. In time, the organization evolved into a bicultural educational enterprise, reflecting a spirit of intellectual tolerance and openness that adapted itself to China's changing conditions and needs. From its earliest years at the close of the Qing dynasty through wars, revolutions, and the modern era of reform, Yale-China's history was interwoven with China's own turbulent journey to find its place in the modern world. At certain points in its history, Yale-China was ahead of its time; at others, the organization was overwhelmed by social and political forces beyond its control or comprehension. Yale-China's history thus provides intriguing insights into the vagaries and complexities of America's interaction with China in the twentieth century, as well as the profound ambivalence with which many Chinese viewed the United States-its representatives, educational models, and intentions toward China-in this period.

It examines the daily routines of acquiring food, cooking it, and eating out at restaurants through the memories of Bulgarians and foreigners, during communism. In looking back on a wide array of issues and events, Albena Shkodrova attempts to explain the paradoxes of daily existence. She reports human stories that are touching, sometimes dark, but often full of humor and anecdotes from nearly one hundred people: some of them are Bulgarians who were involved in the communist food industry, whether as consumers or employees, while others are visitors from the United States and Western Europe who report culinary highlights and disappointments. The author made use of the national press, officially published cookbooks, Communist Party documents, and other previously unstudied sources. An appendix containing recipes of dishes typical of the period and an extensive set of archival photographs are special features of the volume.

Book SynopsisThis study focuses on Empires, from an economic historical perspective. In doing so, it relates current debates in international relations (IR) and politics to the vexed legacy of empires in the past. The book includes analyses of the comparative scholarly literature on Empire in Antiquity, and Empire in the Early Modern and Modern Ages, asking the question if the United Sates is an Empire, and if China an emerging Empire. It contributes to the field given its interdisciplinarity, bringing together both historical and IR insights into world systems in times past. In addition it draws out four key points of separateness between pre-modern and modern empires, and emphases specific economic data. Further to that, the book advances the notion of the emergence of “empires from within” in the 21st century, that is nation-states becoming more multi-ethnic while often stepping back from globalization. And finally it offers future scenarios for the evolution of empires in a Schumpeterian post-industrial world. Table of Contents1. Introduction2. State of the Field3. Book SynopsisThis book delves into the Australia-China relationship, which is currently at its worst since 1972, when the two countries first established a diplomatic relationship. Australia is seen by the US as its front-line ally in its fight in containing China. Derived from an international symposium organized by the editorial team and held in Adelaide, South Australia in September 2021, these essays are an attempt to offer some understanding and explanations for the deterioration of Sino-Australian ties. It is also an attempt to explore the ways by which the two countries can reach some common ground for the future. Despite our very different pasts, can we seek out a shared future together, a future that avoids a war, hot or cold, between a rising power of China and the incumbent US hegemon?Table of ContentsPart I: Knowing the Other. - Chapter 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisA classic returns. The third edition of The Making of Economics appeared in 1987. Now, in a major revision, Ray Canterbery brings the book right up to date with new chapters on the 'casino economy' (a term the author invented to describe an economy driven by making money with money rather than focusing on real production, now overtaken by reality), Joseph Schumpeter, globalization, and general equilibrium. Canterbery retains the engaging flavor of the earlier editions by covering the times and ideas of the major economists, such as Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Mill, and Marshall, while giving ample ink to the remarkable dissidents - Marx, Veblen, Galbraith, Heilbroner, and other 'radicals'. Canterbery again unmasks a traditional economics eschewing value judgements but itself standing on hidden ones even as he traces its origins to Isaac Newton's idea of an orderly universe. Personal references relate the great economists' ideas to the societies in which they lived, making the historical figures really come alive. Economics is displayed as a developing discipline, a discipline still evolving. This book is also available as a .Table of ContentsThe Ethics of Adam Smith and for Economic Systems The Feudal Order The Slow Evolution of the Market Economy Isaac Newton and the Economics Paradigm Adam Smith and the Market Economy The Industrial Revolution: Caught Between Hedonism (Bentham) and the Clerical View (Malthus) David Ricardo Engages Malthus in a Memorable Debate John Stuart Mill: The Last of the Classicals Alfred Marshall and Victorian Virtue The "American Dream" and Other "Optimal Conditions" John Maynard Keynes and the Bloomsbury Group Confront the Aftermath of the Great War John Maynard Keynes Takes on the Great Depression The Founding of Political Economy

Book SynopsisThis study focuses on the Geneva conference on Laos of 1961-2, which Britain played a role in bringing about and bringing to a conclusion. It throws light on Britain's policy in Southeast Asia in what in some sense may be seen as the last of the decades in which its influence was crucial. It is the first book to make full use of the British archives on the conference. The book also bears on the history of Laos, of Vietnam, and of Southeast Asia more generally. The core of the Geneva Settlement was the neutralisation of Laos. That was, however, an argument for the United States to strengthen its commitment to Thailand and Vietnam. It could, moreover, be accepted by North Vietnam only if it did not prevent continued use of the Ho Chi Minh trail, through which it could sustain resistance in South Vietnam. Under such circumstances, the agreement on neutralisation, though elaborately negotiated, had little chance of success. In the longer term, however, it was not without its legacy, for the agreement played a part in developing the concept of a neutral Southeast Asia that ASEAN was later to advance. The book will interest in the various fields on which it touches, such as modern Southeast Asian history, the history of Laos, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and international relations. It will, of course, be of especial interest to those studying Britain's policy at a time when Britain was increasingly anxious to reduce its commitments, but also as always to avert the escalation of the Cold War.

Book SynopsisSingapore fell to Japanese forces on 15 February 1942. Within a matter of days, the occupying army took prisoner more than 100,000 British, Australian and Indian soldiers, and massacred thousands of Chinese civilians. A resistance movement formed in Malaya's jungle-covered mountains, but the vast majority of people resigned themselves to life under Japanese rule. The Occupation of Malaya would last three and a half long years, until the British returned in September 1945. How is this period remembered? And how have individuals, communities, and states shaped and reshaped collections in the post war era as the events of the time slipped out of living memory? This volume uses observations gathered from members of various communities involved in or affected by the conflict - Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, British and Australians to respond to these questions. Its first hand accounts range from the thoughts of families left bereft by Japanese massacres to the ideals of young women who flocked to the Japanese-sponsored Indian National Army, hoping to march on Delhi. The authors also draw on other forms of memory, including the soaring pillars of Singapore's Civilian War Memorial and traditional Chinese cemeteries in Malaysia. In preparing this volume, the authors have reinserted previously marginalised or self-censored voices back into the story in a way that allows them to reflect on the nature of conflict and memory. Moreover, these voices speak of the searing transit from war and massacre through resistance and decolonisation to the moulding of postcolonial states and identities.

Book Synopsis"The centuries-long attack on Black history represents a strike against our very worth, brilliance, and value. We’re ready to fight back. And when we fight, we win." —Colin KaepernickSince its founding as a discipline, Black Studies has been under relentless attack by social and political forces seeking to discredit and neutralize it. Our History Has Always Been Contraband was born out of an urgent need to respond to the latest threat: efforts to remove content from an AP African American Studies course being piloted in high schools across the United States. Edited by Colin Kaepernick, Robin D. G. Kelley, and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Our History Has Always Been Contraband brings together canonical texts and authors in Black Studies, including those excised from or not included in the AP curriculum.Featuring writings by: David Walker, Frederick Douglass, Anna Julia Cooper, Zora Neale Hurston, W. E. B. Du Bois, C. L. R. James, James Baldwin, June Jordan, Angela Y. Davis, Robert Allen, Barbara Smith, Toni Cade Bambara, bell hooks, Barbara Christian, Patricia Hill Collins, Cathy J. Cohen, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Saidiya Hartman, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, and many others. Our History Has Always Been Contraband excerpts readings that cut across and between literature, political theory, law, psychology, sociology, gender and sexuality studies, queer and feminist theory, and history. This volume also includes original essays by editors Kaepernick, Kelley, and Taylor, elucidating how we got here, and pieces by Brea Baker, Marlon Williams-Clark, and Roderick A. Ferguson detailing how we can fight back.To read Our History Has Always Been Contraband is to be an outlaw for liberation. These writings illuminate the ways we can collectively work toward freedom for all—through abolition, feminism, racial justice, economic empowerment, self-determination, desegregation, decolonization, reparations, queer liberation, cultural and artistic expression, and beyond.Table of ContentsContentsPreface by Colin Kaepernick ixPart One: HOW WE GOT HEREOn Racial Justice, Black History, Critical Race Theory, and Other Felonious Ideas 2Robin D.
