  • Fairies: A Dangerous History

Reaktion Books Fairies: A Dangerous History

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow dangerous were fairies? In the late seventeenth century, they could still scare people to death. Little wonder, as they were thought to be descended from fallen angels, and to have the power to destroy the world itself. Such beliefs, along with some remarkably detailed sightings, lingered on well into the twentieth century. In literature and art fairies often retained this edge of danger. From the wild magic of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, through the dark glamour of Keats, to the improbably erotic poem `Goblin Market’ or the paintings inspired by opium dreams, the amoral otherness of the fairies ran side-by-side with the newly delicate or feminized creations of the Victorian world. In the past thirty years the enduring link between fairies and nature has been robustly exploited by eco-warriors and conservationists, from Ireland to Iceland. This book, now available in paperback, tells the story of the many fairy terrors that lay behind Titania or Tinkerbell.Trade Review'[An] engrossing new book.'-Seattle Times; 'Richard Sugg wants to disabuse you of any nonsense you may harbour about fairies being small, whimsical and affectionate . . . Sugg writes well, and amusingly, about the evolution of fairies from Terror to Tinkerbell.'-Toronto Star; 'Sugg's book is in itself a kind of bewitchment, shimmering and eloquent, written with a certain ironic awareness and in the spirit of surrender to unknowing.'-The Australian

Book SynopsisThe second volume of The Cambridge History of Communism explores the rise of Communist states and movements after World War II. Leading experts analyze archival sources from formerly Communist states to re-examine the limits to Moscow''s control of its satellites; the de-Stalinization of 1956; Communist reform movements; the rise and fall of the Sino-Soviet alliance; the growth of Communism in Asia, Africa and Latin America; and the effects of the Sino-Soviet split on world Communism. Chapters explore the cultures of Communism in the United States, Western Europe and China, and the conflicts engendered by nationalism and the continued need for support from Moscow. With the danger of a new Cold War developing between former and current Communist states and the West, this account of the roots, development and dissolution of the socialist bloc is essential reading.Table of ContentsIntroduction Norman Naimark, Silvio Pons and Sophie Quinn-Judge; Part I. Book SynopsisThe third volume of The Cambridge History of Communism spans the period from the 1960s to the present, documenting the last two decades of the global Cold War and the collapse of Soviet socialism. An international team of scholars analyze the rise of China as a global power continuing to proclaim its Maoist allegiance, and the transformation of the geopolitics and political economy of Cold War conflict in an era of increasing economic interpenetration. Beneath the surface, profound political, social, economic and cultural changes were occurring in the socialist and former socialist countries, resulting in the collapse and transformations of the existing socialist order and the changing parameters of world Marxism. This volume draws on innovative research to bring together history from above and below, including social, cultural, gender, and transnational history to transcend the old separation between Communist studies and the broader field of contemporary history.Table of ContentsIntroduction Juliane Fürst, Silvio Pons and Mark Selden; 1. Book SynopsisHistory and Systems of Psychology provides an engaging introduction to the rich story of psychology''s past. Retaining its trademark clarity and accessibility, the Eighth Edition also features expanded coverage of non-western traditions in psychology as well as added coverage of nineteenth-century advances in philosophy and science. The emergence of applications of psychology in clinical, educational, neuroscientific, and social settings are further emphasized within the twenty-first-century landscape of psychology as a cognitive and a positive science. Assuming little prerequisite knowledge, the authors discuss the people, places, and concepts that have shaped psychology''s story, and show that we remain fascinated and perplexed by the same enduring questions that confronted our ancestors namely, our wonder at our subjectivity and consciousness of self. The Eighth Edition is supported by rich online resources including a manual, test bank, and lecture slides for instructors, and studTrade Review'This new edition carries on with the same quality as previous editions. Palgrave Macmillan Imagining European Unity since 1000 AD

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEuropean unity is a dream that has appealed to the imagination since the Middle Ages. Its motives have varied from a longing for peace to a deep-rooted abhorrence of diversity, as well as a yearning to maintain Europe's colonial dominance. This book offers a multifaceted history that takes in account the European imagination in a global context.Trade Review“Its critical meta-narrative stressing the dark sides and shortcomings attending the imaginings of European unity appears both timely and empirically sound. … this book without doubt not only sets new accents for European studies but also qualifies as an introductory textbook for students.” (Florian Greiner, European History Quarterly, Vol. 48 (1), 2018)“A strikingly rich and nuanced picture of the political and intellectual historical pedigree of European integration … .” (R. Lesaffer, American Historical Review, February, 2017)“It brilliantly shows that, beyond irenic discourses which present Europe as a land of freedom, tolerance, and diversity, there is another reality and another history of violence, exclusion, and obsession with uniformity” (Carl Bouchard, Peace & Change, Vol. 42 (1), January, 2017)“Historians have rarely offered such a well-balanced and well informed history of (Anti-)Europeanism … .” (Peter Pichler, History, Vol. 102 (349), January, 2017)“It is learned, impressively so, without being boring for even a single page, and it is subversive since it shows the dark sides of the noble quest for peace – an inbuilt tendency of the integration project to suppress diversity and to dominate. The current circumstance of Europe gives it a particularly sharp edge”. (J. H. H. Weiler, European Journal of International Law, Vol. 28 (1), 2017)“The period of time covered is, certainly, wide and multifaceted, and the nine chapters that make up the book are densely filled with historical details and information. … Imagining European Unity since 1000 AC encourages a reflection on the lessons from the past, illuminating the understanding of the present.” (Marta Postigo Asenjo, Global Intellectual History, Vol. 1 (2), 2017)“Pasture’s complex analysis works against the historiographic grain for studies on Europeans search for unity. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. Book SynopsisA General History and Collection of Voyages and Travels by Robert Kerr is an 18 volume set that contains the complete history of the origin and progress of navigation, discovery, and commerce, by sea and land. In determining upon an era for the commencement of this work, Kerr was led, from a consideration of the accidental discovery of Iceland by the Norwegians in the ninth century, to adopt that period as the beginning of the series, both because the commencement of modern maritime discovery took place during the reign of a British sovereign, and because we derive the earliest written accounts of any of these discoveries from the pen of that excellent prince. It is true that the first accidental discovery of Iceland appears to have been made in 861, eleven years before the accession of Alfred to the throne; yet, as the actual colonization of that island did not take place till the year 878, the seventh of his glorious reign, we have been induced to distinguish the actual commencement of maritime discovery by the modern European nations as coinciding with his era.Table of ContentsPreface; General Plan of the Work; Discoveries in the time of Alfred, King of England, in the Ninth Century of the Christian Era; Original Discovery of Greenland by the Icelanders, in the Ninth Century; Early Discovery of Winland, or America, by the Icelanders, about the year 1001; Travels of two Mahometans into India and China, in the Ninth Century; Travels of Rabbi Benjamin from Spain to China, in the Twelfth Century; Travels of an Englishman in Tartary, in 1243; Sketch of the Revolutions in Tartary; Travels of John de Piano Carpini, in 1246; Travels of W. de Rubruquis, about 1253; Travels of Haitho, Prince of Armenia, in 1254; Travels of Marco Polo into China and the East; from A.D. 1260 to 1295; Travels of Oderic of Portenau, in 1318; Travels of Sir John Mandeville, in 1322; Itinerary of Pegoletti, between Asof and China, in 1355; Voyages of Nicolo and Antonio Zeno, in 1380; Travels of Schildtberger, in 1394; Travels of the Ambassadors of Shah Rokh, in 1419; Voyage and Shipwreck of Quirini, in 1431; Travels of Josaphat Barbaro, in 1436; Index.

Book SynopsisThis book is an overview of the war in Afghanistan; strategy, military operations and issues for Congress. As the 111th Congress convenes and the Obama administration assumes office, the war in Afghanistan has entered its eighth year. With a deteriorating security situation and no comprehensive political outcome yet in sight, most observers view the war in Afghanistan as open-ended. By early 2009, a growing number of members of Congress, Administration officials, and outside experts had concluded that the effort - often called "America''s other war" -- required greater national attention. This book defines "unity of command" and describes how the United States has tried to adhere to this principle since 1914. The evolution of the command structure in Afghanistan since 2001 is also explored. The current command structure in Afghanistan is also analysed. This is an edited, excerpted and augmented edition of a Congressional Research Service and U.S. Government publication.

Book SynopsisA spellbinding literary journey of murder, mayhem, blackmail and infamy. A Hungarian Countess allegedly bathes in the blood of her victims; a pair of female pirates outfight the rest of the crew; a Roman Empress has several senators and members of her family killed so that she can fulfil her sexual desires. These are just four of the thirty-six Wicked Women of Yore who ‘star’ in these pages. This book explores how women such as Ilsa Koch, the bestial Nazi concentration camp commander, Bonnie (of Bonnie and Clyde), ‘Princess Caraboo’ and Queen Isabella, the ‘She-Wolf of France,’ murdered, conned and blackmailed their way into history and infamy. The author also imagines the conversations they might have had, as he describes the scenes of their crimes. D. Lawrence-Young has written over twenty historical novels. In this companion volume to his Villains of Yore, this book will open your eyes to the fact that the fairer sex was not always so fair in the past. From now on you will look at women, young and old, beautiful and ugly, in a completely new and different light.

Book SynopsisIn 1542 William Ramsden bought his wifes family home at Longley and so began a long association between the Ramsdens and Huddersfield which lasted until Sir John Frecheville Ramsden sold his greatly increased Huddersfield estate to the Corporation in 1920. This collection of essays is published to commemorate the centenary of that event. Seven local historians examine different aspects of the Ramsden familys relationship with the town and its inhabitants, especially in the nineteenth century. The book incorporates new research and gives fresh insights into the events which led to Huddersfield becoming the town that bought itself a century ago.Table of ContentsPrelims; Longley Hall: the Huddersfield Seat of the Ramsdens; The Ramsdens and the Public Realm in Huddersfield, 1671-1920; The Ramsden Estate Dispute of 1850-1867; Religion and Philanthropy; Architectural patronage in early-Victorian Huddersfield: the Ramsdens, William Wallen and J. Book Synopsis"Nordic Explorations: Film Before 1930" includes twenty previously unpublished essays written for the 1999 retrospective of Nordic cinema at la Giornate del Cinema Muto in Italy. It brings together leading research on early cinema in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, and includes essays on some of the major figures in Nordic cinema including Dreyer, Christensen, Sjostrom and Stiller. Much current research in Nordic film before 1930 is also represented in this anthology with studies of the Norwegian travel genre, Nordic animated film, the relation of Nordic cinema to German and Russian film, the development of educational cinema and industrial film, as well as studies of individual films, filmmakers and national styles, and the relation of the medium to other forms of popular entertainment. The essays make a timely contribution to the more general study of cinema, afford authoritative and stimulating insight into research in the field and challenge many assumptions regarding Nordic cinema before 1930.Table of ContentsIntroduction1.
