Taylor & Francis Ltd Theology at Paris 13161345
Book SynopsisChris Schabel presents a detailed analysis of the radical solution given by the Franciscan Peter Auriol to the problem of reconciling divine foreknowledge with the contingency of the future, and of contemporary reactions to it. Auriol''s solution appeared to many of his contemporaries to deny God''s knowledge of the future altogether, and so it provoked intense and long-lasting controversy; Schabel is the first to examine in detail the philosophical and theological background to Auriol''s discussion, and to provide a full analysis of Auriol''s own writings on the question and the immediate reactions to them. This book sheds new light both on one of the central philosophical debates of the Middle Ages, and on theology and philosophy at the University of Paris in the first half of the 14th century, a period of Parisian intellectual life which has been largely neglected until now.Trade Review'The work is based on an impressive amount of firsthand manuscript evidence that carries the reader into previously unexplored territory with damaging the flow of the narrative. The conclusions are well argued and convincing. Given its scope and quality, the book will become the standard on this topic.' Journal of Ecclesiastical History '...there can be no doubting that Schabel's study of Paris fourteenth-century theology has made a major contribution towards our understanding of the complexities and changing patterns of fourteenth-century intellectual practice. This volume, together with Schabel's committed editorial work, is certainly at the forefront of recent works which attempt to portray the fourteenth century as a period of renewal, rather than decline, of the scholastic enterprise.' English Historical Review 'The problem of God's knowledge of future contingents has long been one of the more intractable issues in philosophical theology. This fascinating study provides a snapshot of one of the more interesting periods for discussion of the issue: the first half of the fourteenth century... Schabel has written a stimulating book that unearths a vast amount of interesting and important material.' Journal of Theological Studies 'Chris Schabel...has diligently researched archives and has edited some of Auriol's writings...(he) shows that Auriol is a pivotal figure in the history of the problem and in the history of theology at the University of Paris.' Theology Digest 'For scholars interested in the history of divine conscience in the late-medieval period, these chapters are essential reading and provide an important glimpse into the many positions resulting from Auriol's provocative theory. With this volume Auriol has regained his position in the history of medieval discussions of God, omniscience, and temporality.' Speculum '... an important contribution to the literature not least because it takes the account beyon Peter.' Taylor & Francis Cardinal Isidore c.13901462
Book SynopsisA member of the imperial Palaiologan family, albeit most probably illegitimate, Isidore became a scholar at a young age and began his rise in the Byzantine ecclesiastical ranks. He was an active advocate of the union of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches in Constantinople. His military exploits, including his participation in the defence of Constantinople in 1453, provide us with eyewitness accounts. Without doubt he travelled widely, perhaps more so than any other individual in the annals of Byzantine history: Greece, Asia Minor, Sicily, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, and Italy. His roles included diplomat, high ecclesiastic in both the Orthodox and Catholic churches, theologian, soldier, papal emissary to the Constantinopolitan court, delegate to the Council of Florence, advisor to the last Byzantine emperors, metropolitan of Kiev and all Russia, and member of the Vatican curia. This is an original work based on new archival research and the first monograph to study CardiTrade Review"The collection of sources presented here, the thorough presentation of primary and secondary evidence about every facet of Isidore’s life and times, and the erudition of the authors, who are renowned authorities on the late Palaiologan period and the siege of 1453, make this book a signal contribution to the history of the fifteenth-century Mediterranean." - Tia Kolbaba, Rutgers UniversityTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Inc Saints as Intercessors between the Wealthy and
Book SynopsisOffering snapshots of mercantile devotion to saints in different regions, this volume is the first to ask explicitly how merchants invoked saints, and why. Despite medieval and modern stereotypes of merchants as godless and avaricious, medieval traders were highly devout and rightly so. Overseas trade was dangerous, and merchants' commercial activities were seen as jeopardizing their souls. Merchants turned to saints for protection and succor, identifying those most likely to preserve their goods, families, reputations, and souls. The essays in this collection, written from diverse angles, range across later medieval western Europe, from Spain to Italy to England and the Hanseatic League. They offer a multi-disciplinary examination of the ways that medieval merchants, from petty traders to influential overseas wholesalers, deployed the cults of saints. Three primary themes are addressed: danger, community, and the unity of spiritual and cultural capital. Each of these themesTable of Contents1 Introduction, Emily Kelley and Cynthia Turner Camp 2 Cuthbertine Hermits and North Sea Merchant Traders, Christiania Whitehead 3 The Sunday Saint: Keeping a Holy "Merchant’s Time" in the Middle English Life of Erasmus, Cynthia Turner Camp 4 Birgitta of Sweden and the Merchant Classes of Lübeck, Elizabeth A.
