History of religion Books
Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Armenia Christiana Armenian Religious Identity
Book SynopsisThis book presents the dramatic and complex story of Armenia's ecclesiastical relations with Byzantine and subsequently Roman Christendom in the Middle Ages. It is built on a broad foundation of sources - Armenian, Greek, Latin, and Syrian chronicles and documents, especially the abundant correspondence between the Holy See and the Armenian Church. Krzysztof Stopka examines problems straddling the disciplines of history and theology and pertinent to a critical, though not widely known, episode in the story of the struggle for Christian unity.

Libreria Editrice Vaticana Physics and Cosmology: Scientific Perspectives on
Book SynopsisThe essays in Physics and Cosmology: Scientific Perspectives on the Problem of Natural Evil resulted from the seventh international research conference co-sponsored by the Vatican Observatory Foundation and the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences. It is the first in a new series on the problem of natural evil—on reconciling suffering caused by natural processes with God's goodness. The editors have divided this volume into four sections. The first includes history of the issue and a critical analysis of how the history has often been understood, followed by two chapters that provide typologies: one of types of suffering, the other of the various “shapes” of defenses. The second section comprises chapters that address the problem of suffering head-on, with resources from science, theology, and philosophy. The third section contains essays that address the issue by offering reformulations of typical understandings of the relation between God and the world. Finally, essays in the fourth section claim, in one way or another, that the question of the volume needs to be reframed. Contributors: Niels Christian Hvidt, Terrence W. Tilley, Wesley J. Wildman, Christopher Southgate, Andrew Robinson, William R. Stoeger, S.J., Robert John Russell, Nancey Murphy, Thomas F. Tracy, Philip Clayton, Steven Knapp, Kirk Wegter-McNelly, Denis Edwards, Brad J. Kallenberg, and Don Howard.

Book SynopsisIn postcolonial Singapore and Malaysia, Pentecostal megachurches dominate the Christian landscape, but the "big four" Protestant churches-Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and Brethren-remain religions of heritage for many. Sixty Malaysian and nineteen Singaporean assemblies identify themselves as Christian Brethren, and most trace their roots to independent local churches formed in Penang and Singapore in the 1860s. After World War II, former Brethren elders founded new independent churches, from charismatic local churches and Pentecostal megachurches to a small network of Exclusive Brethren assemblies. This study is a transregional history of the Brethren movement and its emplacement in Singapore and Malaysia, but is also a history of discontinuous continuities that have shaped the modern field of religious practice in China and Southeast Asia.Trade Review"A landmark publication on two counts. It not only re-inserts the historical significance of the Brethren churches in Malaysian and Singaporean Christianity, but also provides an important point of departure for future scholarship on the intersections between this stream of Christianity and socio-cultural and political shifts in modern postcolonial nation-states in the region.” - Studies in World ChristianityTable of Contents List of Illustrations Preface Introduction: Christian Circulations Part I: The Open Brethren Movement Chapter 1: The Brethren Movement and the Local Church Chapter 2: George Müller, Anthony Norris Groves, and the Local Church in India Part II: Penang and China Chapter 3: The London Missionary Society in Penang, 1819-1843 Chapter 4: The Brethren Movement and the Penang Mission Chapter 5: Revival and Rebellion in China Chapter 6: Crisis in the Penang Mission Chapter 7: Hokkien Evangelists Part III: Circulations Chapter 8: Singapore: Visiting Every City Chapter 9: Penang and its Networks, 1874-1912 Chapter 10: Alexander Grant and the Boxer Uprising Part IV: Schism and Continuity Chapter 11: Chinese Revivalists in Southeast Asia, 1929-1943 Chapter 12: Wilson Wang and Teh Phai Lian Chapter 13: A New Local Church Movement and Living Waters Chapter 14: Schism and Continuity Chapter 15: The Full Gospel Assemblies and the Charismatic Church of Penang Conclusion: The Brethren Movement and its Modern Fate Chinese Glossary Bibliography Index

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Buddhist Dynamics in Premodern and Early Modern
Book SynopsisThe study of historical Buddhism in premodern and early modern Southeast Asia stands at an exciting and transformative juncture. Interdisciplinary scholarship is marked by a commitment to the careful examination of local and vernacular expressions of Buddhist culture as well as to reconsiderations of long-standing questions concerning the diffusion of and relationships among varied texts, forms of representation, and religious identities, ideas, and practices. The twelve essays in this collection, written by leading scholars in Buddhist Studies and Southeast Asian history, epigraphy, and archaeology, comprise the latest research in the field to deal with the dynamics of mainland and (pen)insular Buddhism between the sixth and nineteenth centuries C.E. Drawing on new manuscript sources, inscriptions, and archaeological data, they investigate the intellectual, ritual, institutional, sociopolitical, aesthetic, and literary diversity of local Buddhisms, and explore their connected histories and contributions to the production of intraregional and transregional Buddhist geographies.

Information Age Publishing Hollywood or History?: An Inquiry-Based Strategy
Book SynopsisTeaching and learning through Hollywood, or commercial, film and television productions is anything but a new approach and has been something of a mainstay in the classroom for nearly a century. However, purposeful and effective instruction through film is not problem free and many challenges accompany classroom applications of Hollywood motion pictures. In response to the problems and possibilities associated with teaching through film, we are developing a collection of practical, classroom-ready lesson ideas that might bridge gaps between theory and practice and assist teachers endeavoring to make effective use of film in their classrooms. We believe that film can serve as a powerful tool in the social studies classroom and, where appropriately utilized, foster critical thinking and civic mindedness. The NCSS College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework, represents a renewed and formalized emphasis on the perennial social studies goals of deep thinking, reading and writing. Our hope is that this edited book might play a small role in the larger project of supporting practitioners, specifically 6-12 teachers of social studies and world religion content, by offering a collection of classroom-ready tools based on the Hollywood or History? strategy and designed to foster inquiry through the careful use of selected motion pictures and television productions.Topics of interest include the roots, rituals, symbols, beliefs, and controversial or significant people or events related to: The Abrahamic Religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam Eastern Religions/Philosophies: Hinduism, Buddhism Indigenous Religions/Spirituality: First Nations, Traditional African Religions

James Clarke & Co. Ltd Documents of the English Reformation Third Edition Library of Ecclesiastical History
Trade ReviewA timely collection of official formularies relating to the English Reformation The Expository Times Magnificient work, which must (and will) prove itself by generations of use as an indispensable tool of English Reformation studies. No recent book has come my way of greater intrinsic value in its own sphere than this - or one which will repay more abundantly the price asked for its range, its detail and its length. Epworth Review It is a most welcome contribution to the study of theology and ecclesiastical history, and will establish itself as an essential reference for all students of the Tudor and Stuart experience of the Protestant faith David Parnham It will serve at least three very useful purposes: first, a salutary source of information; second, it should provide a stark reminder to those engaged in the various ministries of the Church of England: third, it will remind over-secularized modern analysts that the Reformation, even in England, did have a lot to do with religion, its understanding and practice. Theology A well designed collection which will meet a widely felt need ... probably the most comprehensive one of its type to appear this century ... outstandingly useful. R.A. Houlbrooke, in Parliamentary History A very useful primary source collection ... The timespan is generously conceived ... From a scholarly point of view admirable, and the standard of editing is very high Teaching History This is an essential reference work for anyone interested in this important period of church history. James Clarke & Co. Ltd A A Companion to the Book of Common Prayer
Book SynopsisA comprehensive analysis of the Book of Common Prayer's historical development, theological background and continued liturgical significance.Trade Review'The 1662 Book of Common Prayer has had a massive influence on corporate worship inside and outside the Anglican world ever since it was published. The principles which guided the production of this book take us beyond our contemporary superficial approaches to what we do when we gather as the church of God, allowing the great truths of the gospel to shape our response to that gospel as God's redeemed people. Gerald Bray is uniquely placed to reacquaint us with those principles. His encyclopaedic knowledge of Anglican history and theology enables us to understand why the various services of the book have the shape they do and so enable us to make better use of them. This is a richly edifying companion to the Book of Common Prayer which I highly recommend.' - Dr Mark D Thompson, Principal, Moore Theological College 'Learned, pastoral, and unafraid to show his theological cards, Gerald Bray has breathed new life into a genre that has nurtured the devotion of millions of Anglicans through the centuries: the prayer book commentary. This Companion emphasises the theological themes of the Book of Common Prayer, treating it not as a historical artifact, nor as a monument of great literature, but as a liturgical embodiment of the good news of Jesus Christ.' - Samuel L. Bray, John N. Matthews Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame and coeditor of The 1662 Book of Common Prayer: International Edition 'Gerald Bray has studied, written on, and taught the Anglican formularies for decades. Amidst rising interest in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer (including the recent International Edition), this timely Companion comes as an eminently readable and informative guide, and will be profitable to prayer-book newcomers and veterans alike.' - Jake Griesel, Lecturer in Church History and Anglican Studies, George Whitefield College, Cape Town 'One of the major drivers for the theological renewal of global Anglicanism in the twenty-first century is a rediscovery of the Book of Common Prayer by a new generation. Gerald Bray's overview, building on the classic Tutorial Prayer Book, is a valuable guide for Anglicans worldwide who want to embrace their rich heritage.' - Andrew Atherstone, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. 'The formation of the Ordinariates for former Anglicans in the Catholic Church in 2011 allowed the use of liturgical texts 'proper to the Anglican tradition which have been approved by the Holy See'. The commission set up by the Vatican to oversee liturgy looked to the Prayer Book tradition in Anglicanism for suitable texts for liturgical use. The Ordinariates now have a complete set of liturgical texts using much Prayer Book Material including, Morning and Evening Prayer, the marriage and burial services and material from the Holy Communion Service including the collects. This has a profound ecumenical significance. For some of us this has meant rediscovering the beauty of the Book of Common Prayer. Dr Bray has done us an invaluable service helping us to appreciate the sources of many of the prayers which are now incorporated into liturgy in the Catholic Church.' - The Right Revd Monsignor Keith Newton, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of WalsinghamTable of ContentsPreface and Acknowledgements ix 1.
