Book SynopsisThe 3,000-year-old Ambum Stone, from Papua New Guinea, is the focus of several archaeological stories. The stone itself is an interesting artifact, an important piece of art history that tells us something about the ancient Papuans. The stone is also at the center of controversies over the provenance and ownership of ancient artifacts, as it was excavated on the island of New Guinea, transferred out of the country, and sold on the antiquities market. In telling the story of the Ambum Stone, Brian Egloff raises questions about what can be learned from ancient works of art, about cultural property and the ownership of the past, about the complex and at times shadowy world of art dealers and collectors, and about the role ancient artifacts can play in forming the identities of modern peoples.Trade ReviewReading this book was like going on a walk with the promise of finding an exciting treasure....Every university library and anyone concerned with the anthropology, archaeology and cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea, or indeed of the Pacific should possess a copy....There is a great deal of information about illegal export of cultural material from Papau New Guinea but little has been published and it is to Egloff's credit that he has risked an almost certain backlash from dealers, collectors and museums to draw a few examples to our attention. His research on the Ambum stone demonstrates that due diligence can provide the information that is so carefully concealed by those wanting to circumvent cultural property legislation....This fine achievement of Egloff's brings the adventures and misadventures of the Ambum stone to our awareness. Every university library and anyone concerned with the anthropology, archaeology, and cultural heritage of Papau New Guinea, or indeed of the Pacific, should possess a copy. -- Barry Craig x * Archaeology In Oceania, Spring 2010 *Egloff presents the complexity and challenges of protecting cultural heritage and negotiating multiple regimes of value among drastically different societies and contexts....The author is especially well qualified to unravel this tale of negotiation and sometimes intrigue....These are important arguments, compellingly presented as a case study....This book will be a useful read for museum professionals and scholars of Pacific cultures....It is an important contribution to the larger discussion of the worldwide trade in art, cultureal heritage preservation, and the tensions between global and local perspectives on these issues. -- Kathleen Barlow, 2010 * Museum Anthropology *There are two threads to Brian Egloff's story of the Ambum Stone, a 3,500-year-old sandstone carving from Papua New Guinea that appeared on the ancient art market in London in the mid -1960s. One is the story of the stone itself, which resembles carvings found in more recent times by Papuan villagers and assimilated into local cults as stones of power. The other is the story of the legal and financial complexities of the international trade in antiquities, as the stone was removed from Papua New Guinea in the early 1960s and bought by the National Gallery of Australia in 1977. Egloff tells these riveting stories with fine balance, showing how the gnarled histories of objects like the Ambum Stone are manifestations of modern concerns with the protection of cultural heritage. -- Jack Golson, Emeritus Professor, Department of Archaeology and Natural History, Australian National UniversityTable of ContentsChapter 1 From Samting Bilong Tumbuna to Treasure Chapter 2 Contested Landscapes and Mind-scapes Chapter 3 Emotions and Responses Chapter 4 Laws, Museums, and Galleries Chapter 5 Romancing the Stone Chapter 6 Fitting the Pieces Together Chapter 7 Had Enough Romance?

This publication is co-sponsored by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts at Old Salem, the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum, and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley.Trade ReviewThe curious, message-laden inlays and inscriptions that are almost always found on the furniture of joiner John Shearer make him one of the early South?s most fascinating and enigmatic artisans. Scholars have sought the meaning of these words and images for more than thirty years, but with little success. Author Elizabeth Davidson has at last cracked the code on Shearer?s communiqués, revealing him as a passionate and well informed follower of international events. Her book on the subject will be requiredreading for any serious student of southern furniture... -- Ronald L. Hurst, Colonial Williamsburg FoundationIconography is a word that doesn't faze Elizabeth Davison. In The Furniture of John Shearer, 1790-1820, her meticulous research records not only what he made, but also unlocks the mind-set of that craftsman in his choice of ornamentation found on so much of his furniture. Taking the measure of all this literature, one recognizes how unmanageable a mass of material Aberbach has successfully commanded. . . . Aberbach does just what he had intended- to 'let Wagner speak for himself'- but his skill at paraphrasing and interweaving his sources gives added coherence and consistency to the thoughts the composer first set forth. In very lively and readable prose, Professor Gholson elucidates how to develop a highly individualistic yet systematic course of discovery as a choreographer dedicated to the use of music. The book offers hands-on approaches for analyzing scores as well as problem-solving questions of form. Gholson analyzes the musical and choreographic structure of her dances within the context of changing political ideals for black artistry in late twentieth century performing arts. Book SynopsisSwiss critic Johann Georg Sulzer''s Dialogues on the Beauty of Nature (1750) and Reflections on Certain Topics of Natural History (1745) are exemplary specimens of eighteenth-century European theology, philosophy, natural history, and aesthetics. Sulzer''s contemporaries-notably Goethe-read him with attention. Eric Miller''s elegant translation comes with a vivid, informative, and strongly contextualizing introduction. Sulzer''s early works are a curio cabinet of the philosophical and theological arguments that exercised and enticed the intelligentsia of his period. University Press of America The Death of Art

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Death of Art evaluates the philosopher Theodor W. Adorno''s ideas on music, visual arts, and literature and their relevance to today''s mass culture. Adorno drew concepts and inspiration from fields such as history, historiography, sociology, musicology, anthropology, philosophy, and psychology, which he used in his assessments of art. His varied perspectives resulted in writings that offer shocking glimpses into larger cultural issues. By insisting on opposition and employing an expressionistic writing style, Adorno invited readers to question his authority and formulate their own views. In this work, author B.R. Sharma uses similar tactics to isolate, revisit, and criticize some of Adorno''s key philosophies. The result is a comprehensive and clear overview of Adorno''s cultural theories that unearths trends pointing to the eventual death of art.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Preface Chapter 2 Acknowledgement Chapter 3 1. University Press of America Attached to the Mouse

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Mouse and the Duck are celebrities created by Disney through its new art form, the animated cartoon. Using various outlets including mass-media, television, and theme parks, Disney made the Mouse an icon of corporate success and American culture. From Pop art to the present day, more than a hundred artists have incorporated the Mouse''s image, humor, and nostalgia into their work. HOW AND WHY? Attached to the Mouse is the first art history analyzing use of Disney imagery by such contemporary artists as Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, Warhol, Chagoya, Thiebaud, Helnwein, Boltanski, Dion, and Pensato. This book explores the impact of Disney, including artists'' economic and psychological motivations, on contemporary art. Links to: Author''s Website and Author''s Blog for Attached to the MouseTrade ReviewFor at least a half-century Mickey Mouse, ears and all, has served as one of the most potent icons in contemporary visual culture.…But however much that (deceptively) ingenuous face and unique silhouette turn up in Pop paintings, social-commentary cartoons, and even abstract sculpture, writers and historians have let Mickey's ubiquity pass without substantial comment. Until now. Defying the perils of post-modernist close reading, pop-culture fetishism, and the fabled wrath of Disney Corp., Holly Crawford proffers an exhaustive documentation, classification, and analysis of Mickey's many appearances in the visual art of our time. Her study fills a gap in the critical history of recent art, not to mention in Mouseology. -- Peter Frank, Critic and CuratorEnjoyable, brilliant, readable, and enormously informative. The seminal study of how mass media institutions-Disney and Art-function in our culture, written with flashes of humor. It's likely to be a premier resource for years to come. -- Manuel Alvarado, Professor, Arts & Media, City University, LondonAttached to the Mouse is a result of painstaking research into this history and penetrating analysis of the psychology behind the phenomenon.... For the first time, an art historian has chronicled the artists' use of Mickey as a personal language....Remaining impartial with the issues she raises in order to embrace the tension contained in this holistic vision, Crawford tackles the present-day crisis of art criticism at its core....Attached to the Mouse will prove to be an essential resource underpinning the foundation by which this search for holism comes into form. -- Lisa Paul Streitfeld * NY Arts Magazine *In her innovative book Attached to the Mouse Holly Crawford examines the appropriation of the iconic images of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck with thoughtful scholarship and spirited humor. -- Peter Selz, Professor Emeritus, History of Art, UC BerkeleyTable of ContentsPart 1 Preface Part 2 Acknowledgements Part 3 Introduction Chapter 4 1. • Rlpg/Galleys A Kingly Craft

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA Kingly Craft is a significant contribution to the interdisciplinary fields of African art history and visual studies. Ethiopian illuminated manuscripts have been regarded as remarkable expressions of Christian art and material culture. However, until recently, the elite art form of manuscript production has not been rigorously examined within specific social, cultural, and political contexts. This work is an innovative study of eighteenth and nineteenth century manuscript painting during a critical period of Ethiopian history known as the Era of the Princes. Focusing on manuscripts comissioned by members of an influential dynasty in the province of Shewa, the book draws attention to the relationship between art and patronage. Shewan leaders commissioned books with illustrations that were increasingly narrative and secular, visually documenting historical events, everyday life at court, and the portrayal of political concepts. This analysis also explores how local leaders in an independent African kingdom used art to establish links with a glorious past, thereby legitimizing their authority and preserving their great deeds for the future.Trade ReviewJenkin's analysis of the thirty images she utilizes is meticulous and thorough, and clearly demonstrates her argument that Shewa's rulers influenced the production of illuminated manuscripts, particularly with regard to the inclusion of secular imagery and unique aspects of their lives and courts…. A Kingly Craft will certainly be of interest to Ethiopianists, particularly those in the field of history or visual culture….Jenkins's in-depth analysis of individual images is excellent, and her argument regarding Shewan rulers' impact on the increasing use of secular imagery in Ethiopian painting is convincing and well supported. * African Arts Magazine, Spring 2010 *This study is well-written, interesting, and epistemologically important. Out of stock

Book SynopsisEvery single artistic endeavor in Stanislavsky''s life was achieved in close collaboration with female partners. First, it was his own mother, Elizaveta Alekseyeva, who shaped his personality, and encouraged his exploration of theatre. Then it was his artistic mother, Glikeria Fedotova, who guided him through the ten years of his work. Then Maria Lilina, his wife, who became his best student, and later one of the best actresses of the Art Theatre. It would be impossible to understand Stanislavsky''s development as an actor and director without his work with Maria Andreyeva, the femme fatale of turn of the century Russian theatre, or Olga Knipper, whom he directed and acted with for forty years. And near the end of his life, when Stanislavsky introduced the method of physical action (metod phizicheskix deistvii), another woman embraced his work, a young actress named Irina Rozanova. Stanislavsky and Female Actors is the exploration of Stanislavsky''s artistic and personal relationship wTrade ReviewIgnatieva's research has been published in leading journals and shared through international conferences. It is scrupulously documented, informed through her network of contacts among leading Russian theatre artists, and of great import to theatre history. Her book, Stanislavsky and Female Actors, contains a wealth of information on Stanislavsky's working relationships with both seasoned performers and students. It will open up new avenues for understanding his foundational approach to acting by looking at its application by women. -- Sharon M. Carnicke, Professor of Theatre and Slavic Studies, Associate Dean, TheatreIgnatieva dedicates her book to the analysis of Stanislavsky's collaborations with female actors and their Life in Art. There are fewer and fewer studies being published in Russia and worldwide about acting, as if the world forgets that theatre can exist without all other theatre practitioners, but not without actors. Stanislavsky remembered it, and Ignatieva's book reminds us about it once again. Like My Life in Art, Ignatieva's book is published in the United States; as an editor-in-chief of the journal Stanislavsky, I hope that, in the future, the Russian public can also benefit from reading Ignatieva's unique study. -- Dr. Olga Galakhova, Editor-in-Chief, Journal Stanislavsky, Moscow, Russia, Professor of the Maly Theatre Schepkin School, Moscow, RussiaShe deftly arranges her selected material into a coherent and cohesive narrative, resulting in a work that is informative, engaging, and delightful to read. The book functions both as a valuable resource for the scholar of Russian theater and as a cogent and thoroughly accessible introduction to the life of Stanislavsky, his female actresses, and the formation of the Moscow Art Theatre. * Slavif and East European Journal, Winter 2009 *The portrait that Maria Ignatieva gives us of Stanislavsky is perhaps no less autocratic and patriarchal than the traditional one, but he emerges as needier, more vulnerable and more humanly dependent. . . . We come away from a reading of Maria Ignatieva's book with a renewed interest in Stanislavsky as a creator motivated by a passionate love for his art and for those who practiced it by his side and with an awakened curiosity about the women without whom he could not have developed his theories or exercised his craft. -- Professor Daniel Gerould, Editor, Slavic and East European PerformanceTable of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisGo Get Mother''s Picket Sign tells the story of American suffragists who worked to balance their public and private lives as wives, mothers, and homemakers. American suffragists battled an intense fight against the idea that women in America could not engage in politics without also creating a great void in the home. It was believed that if women allowed this void to occur, the decline and decay of the home life would destroy 19th and 20th century society. Men could not help women fill the role of homemaker, as it was thought that men had neither experience nor the ability to learn the order and method of caring for home and children. The family framework known by Victorians remained doomed. However, to counter this concept, suffragists created a new woman who functioned in both the home and the public world. All of their suffrage materials showed that these women did not forget their responsibility to the home. Everything they used encompassed the right of suffrage and maintained the Trade ReviewWith sparking research and moving prose, Cathleen Nista Rauterkus has offered us an original and groundbreaking subject, the importance of material culture associated with the Suffrage Movement in the United States. She explores and interprets new dimensions of American history by analyzing various themes of the subject and tying archival work with material culture, the influential and tangible tools found within women's suffrage. Readers will be drawn into the colorful material and wonderful fabric of Rauterkus' arguments. This is a masterful use of traditional historical documents as well as postcards, tea sets, dolls, dresses, and cartoons. -- Clifford Trafzer, Rupert Costo, Chair, Department of History, University of California, RiversideTable of ContentsChapter 1 List of Figures Chapter 2 Acknowlegments Chapter 3 Introduction Chapter 4 Chapter 1: Suffrage Explained Chapter 5 Chapter 2: Anti Backlash Chapter 6 Chapter 3: Madonna and Child Chapter 7 Chapter 4: Fashion Chapter 8 Chapter 5: Proper Hostesses Chapter 9 Chapter 6: Entering Public Space Chapter 10 Conclusion Chapter 11 Bibliography Chapter 12 Appendix

Book SynopsisAn illuminating exploration of 31 incredible women?across art, architecture, dance, literature, and more?whose culture-defining contributions have, until now, been overshadowed by their role as muses to history''s better-known men. What does it mean to be someone''s muse? Historically, to be called a ?muse? among artistic circles has been marketed as a flattering title. It is a commendation that most often refers to a woman whose vivacity and beauty are the source of inspiration for a (usually) male artist or creator. Perhaps her inspiring presence is even credited in the story of his success. But the very concept of a muse underestimates these women and their abilities. At its root, muse is a support role, the title a consolation prize that claims to recognize a woman?s greatness?but only in her support of another.I''m Not Your Musereclaims the narrative of 31 of these extraordinary women, from The Mother of the Movies Alice Guy-Blaché to Modernist designer Eileen Gray, prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, storied Harlem Renaissance editor Jessie Redmon Fauset, and many more. Each of these women advanced the narrative of culture and society, pushing the boundaries of visual arts, dance and movement, commercial architecture, music, journalism, and the performing arts. Whether by historical accident or cruel design, their contributions have historically been overshadowed by those of their male counterparts, and often collaborators. In this briskly written, incisively researched compendium, author and researcher Lori Zimmer repositions these women as the main characters of their own lives. Each profile is accented with original illustrations?including jaunty portraits in playfully constructed frames?by artist Maria Krasinski. Together, theyhighlight the contemporary accomplishments and historical legacies of a wide-ranging group of revolutionary women.
