Book SynopsisIn the late 1960s and '70s, artists in Yugoslavia rejected the official language of expression licensed by the regime, abstract art, and replaced it with "anti-art" - works on the borderline of the form that balanced between amateurism and professionalism and breached modernist conventions. These artists seized upon the opportunities to disseminate their art offered by film clubs - public institutions that brought together amateur artists and served as enclaves of freedom. "As Soon as I Open My Eyes I See a Film" explores this crucial period in the Yugoslav art scene and situates it in the broader cultural context of Central and Eastern Europe.

  • Russian Lacquer: The Collection of the Museum für

Hirmer Verlag Russian Lacquer: The Collection of the Museum für

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisMonika Kopplin highlights the extraordinary variety of decorative techniques as well as the many stylistic features. The history and art history of Russia are reflected in the small format of the lacquer miniatures, painting a lively picture of the various eras. A comprehensive index of seals expands the catalogue into a reference book. Russian lacquer art can be traced back to Peter the Great, who had come to know this flourishing art and craft during his study trips in Western Europe. The first important work in this genre in the tsar’s empire was completed in 1722 in the form of the Lacquer Study in his palace of Monplaisir. A second significant event followed when the Korobov workshop, which was modelled on the Braunschweig-based Stobwasser workshop, was established in 1793 near Moscow. It is better known by the name of a later owner, Lukutin. A technical and artistic alignment with the German model was followed by an increasingly independent Russian development from the 1820s onwards. At first this found expression in specific decorative techniques, and later also in specifically Russian motifs.

Book SynopsisThe catalogue presents for the first time the rich Tibetan artistic heritage through the collection of Michael and Justyna Buddeberg: carpet manufacture, craftwork in metal and the manufacture of furniture. Previously neglected aspects of everyday Tibetan culture are explored and make the catalogue an essential starting point for further research. The Buddeberg collection includes masterpieces of Tibetan art in textile and metal work and presents us with hitherto disregarded asp ects of the Tibetan approach to art. Carpets for sitting on or as a riding accessory played a central role in their traditional culture but have hitherto been neglected in research, as has metal craftwork, which focused on the ornamentation of end knobs on the poles supporting the cultic paintings. The lavishly illustrated catalogue closes this gap and presents together with contributions by acknowledged specialists an in - depth overview of the fields of carpet and textile art, metalwork and furniture produc tion.

  • Schiele

    Taschen GmbH Schiele

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisWith his graphic style, figural distortion, and defiance of conventional standards of beauty, Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was a pioneer of Austrian Expressionism and one of the most startling portrait painters of the 20th century. Mentored by Gustav Klimt, Schiele dabbled in a glittering Art Nouveau style before developing his own much more gritty and confrontational aesthetic of sharp lines, lurid shades, and mannered, elongated figures. His prolific portraits and self-portraits stunned the Viennese establishment with an unprecedented psychological and sexual intensity, favoring erotic, exposing, or unsettling poses in which he or his sitters cower on the floor, languish with legs akimbo, glower at the viewer, and thrust their genitalia into the foreground. His models are at times skeletal and sickly, at other times strong and sensual. Many contemporaries found Schiele’s work to be not only ugly but morally objectionable; in 1912, the artist was briefly imprisoned for obscenity. Today, his oeuvre is celebrated for its revolutionary approach to the human figure and for its direct and particularly fervent, almost furious brand of draftsmanship. This book presents key Schiele works to introduce his short but urgent career and his profound contribution to the development of modern art, which reaches right through to such contemporary talents as Tracey Emin and Jenny Saville.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Arts and Crafts Garden Shire Library

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Arts and Crafts Movement espoused values of simplicity, craftsmanship and beauty quite counter to Victorian and Edwardian industrialism. Though most famous for its architecture, furniture and ornamental work, between the 1890s and the 1930s the movement also produced gardens all over Britain whose designs, redolent of a lost golden era, had worldwide influence. These designs, by luminaries such as Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens, were engaging and romantic combinations of manor-house garden formalism and the naive charms of the cottage garden but from formally clipped topiary to rugged wild borders, nothing was left to chance. Sarah Rutherford here explores the winding paths and meticulously shaped hedges, the gazebos and gateways, the formal terraces and the billowing border plantings that characterised the Arts and Crafts garden, and directs readers and gardeners to where they can visit and be inspired by these beautiful works of art.Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Arts and Crafts Movement / Design and Designers / Defining the Garden: Boundaries and Materials / Garden Buildings / Ornaments / Plants and Planting / Popularising the Ideals: Books, Images and Education / The Legacy / Further Reading / Places to Visit / Index

  • Nicolas Schöffer

    Yale University Press Nicolas Schöffer

Book SynopsisHungarian-born French artist Nicolas Schöffer (19121992), though relatively unknown today, was during his lifetime a significant presence in the art world. His 1956 piece CYSP 1 is considered the first cybernetic sculpture, making use of motors, microphones, and photo-electric cells to create a work based on feedback loops and responsiveness to its environment. For Schöffer, cybernetics enabled a crucial artistic exploration of the boundary between the living and the technological. This important reevaluation of Schöffer's work features sculptures, paintings, and drawings, including unpublished pieces from the artist's studio and archive, as well as documentation of his interdisciplinary and experimental collaborations with architects, musicians, choreographers, scientists, and industrialists. Particular attention is paid to the innovative work he created between 1945 and 1975, which takes on particular resonance in our current, digitally saturated world. Distributed for Mercatorfon

  • Whistler and Nature

Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd Whistler and Nature

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis innovative and compelling study reconsiders Whistler’s work from the context of his military service and his relationship with ‘nature at the margins’. Whistler came from a family of soldiers and engineers; his father, Major George Washington Whistler, was originally a US military engineer. Drawing and mapmaking were important components of the military training that Whistler acquired as an offi cer cadet at West Point Academy in 1851-4 and subsequently in the Drawing Department at the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, where he attempted to realise his father’s hopes that he would make engineering or architecture his profession. These infl uences in turn shaped Whistler’s attitude towards nature, as expressed in works ranging from his celebrated London ‘Nocturnes’ to his French coastal scenes – all of which were created after Whistler moved permanently to Europe in 1855.Whistler’s close observation of nature and its moods underpinned his powerful and haunting visions of nineteenth-century life. His images explore the contrasts between the natural and man-made worlds: rivers and wharves, gardens and courtyards, the ideal and the naturalistic. And his singular vison was always defi ned by his enduring affi nity with the makers of railways, bridges and ships, the cornerstones of Victorian wealth and trade. Infl uenced by Rembrandt, Whistler’s early etchings of London are notable for their focus on line and topographical accuracy. From the 1860s, his enthusiasm for Japanese art, too, infl uenced his attitude to perspective and spatial relations between objects. This led him, in his London Nocturnes, to reduce the external world before him to its bare bones. Whistler’s smoky images of warehouses, bridges, harbours and tall ships were designed to showcase a new kind of productive, wealth-generating landscape. It is a view of nature constrained by man-made structures: the shadowy outline of the warehouses and chimneys on the far shore; the mast and rigging of a Thames barge in the middle distance. This absorbing book reassesses a familiar and notoriously colourful artistic fi gure in a fascinating and pertinent new light, and is an important new contribution to our understanding of the Victorian art world and its physical context.

  • Christina Rossetti Poetry in Art

Yale University Press Christina Rossetti Poetry in Art

Book SynopsisThe first art book to explore Rossetti's art and poetry together, including her own artworks, illustrations to her writing, and art inspired by her Christina Rossetti (18301894) is among the greatest of English Victorian poets. The intensity of her vision, her colloquial style, and the lyrical quality of her verse still speak powerfully to us today, while her striking imagery has always inspired artists. Rossetti lived in an exceptionallyvisual environment: her brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was the leading member of the avant-garde Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and she became a favorite model for the group. She sat for the face of Christ in William Holman Hunt's The Light of the World, while both John Everett Millais and Frederick Sandysillustrated her poetry. Later on, the pioneering photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and the great Belgian Symbolist Fernand Khnopff wereinspired by Rossetti's enigmatic verses. This engaging book explores the full artistic context of Rossetti's life aTrade Review“Handsome publication”— Ian Lipke, Queensland Reviewers Collective“This lovely-looking book explores Christina Rossetti’s artistic context in new and unexpected ways.” —Aileen Reid, World of Interiors“The catalogue for the recent exhibition at the Watts Gallery, Christina Rossetti: Poetry in art, brings together many surprising items from public and private collections to reveal unusual aspects of the poet's life and work. […] The scholarly work of the editors and contributors and the book's many illustrations greatly expand our knowledge of Christina Rossetti and her widening circle.” —Lindsay Duguid, Times Literary Supplement“The volume is abundantly illustrated and provides a satisfying contribution to the study of an immensely complex poet and an aspect of 19th century art with which she is unavoidably intertwined” —Tom Fleming, Apollo Magazine“Her influence on other artists is shown both in the exhibition and in the beautiful accompanying book – far more than a catalogue – Christina Rossetti: Poetry in Art. We see her impact in their illustrations for different editions of her books of poetry, and the many paintings inspired by her poems, such as Arthur Hughes’s The Mower, while in art photography, Julia Margaret Cameron based her charming The Minstrel Group on one of her poems.” —David V Barrett, Catholic Herald“Throughout, handsome design and well-placed illustrations make this a pleasing, fresh addition to the literature on Victorian art, poetry and aesthetics.” —Frances Spalding, Literary Review“Handsome book” —Jeremy Musson, Country Life“The volume now published by Yale University Press, in relation with an exhibition on display at the Watts Gallery in Compton does manage to shed some new light on a largely overlapping subject.” —Laurent Bury, Cercles“[A]n accessible, wide-ranging and beautifully presented introduction to the visual contexts of Rossetti’s work…[which] honours the established view that her poetry participates in a lively interplay with the visual arts, offering an alluring record of a beautiful exhibition.”—Fiona Macdonald, The Journal of Religious HistoryLong listed for the Historians of British Art Book Prize

  • Matisse and Decoration

Yale University Press Matisse and Decoration

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review“These 249 pages really are something of an artistic, as well as literary gem.” —David Marx, David Marx Book Reviews“Klein’s scholarship and insights make this beautifully written volume required reading.”—Karl Buchberg, The Burlington Magazine“The issue of the “decorative” in Matisse’s work has long been a thorn in the literature: while the artist never stopped affirming its importance, aiming to dismiss the negative connotations that plagued the concept of decoration in the context of modernist art, his enormous achievements in the field of decorative arts remain almost entirely understudied, with the exception of the Vence Chapel. Most Matisse scholars have taken the artist at his word and treated the “decorative” as a quality pertaining to his paintings. John Klein does not contradict this view, but he shows how Matisse’s thought evolved not only to admit that the “decorative” and decoration proper could meet, but also, after the Second World War, that the decorative arts were the most appropriate means to convey his idiosyncratic sense of the “decorative.” Examining many little-known commissions, and in some cases their relative failure, Klein reveals a gradual change in Matisse’s response to the demands of his patrons, and to the various media to which he gradually submits. Matisse, a stubborn man, prone to dissatisfaction with the translation of one of his designs into a medium he did not directly control, learned how to take advantage of a given medium’s limitations. This arc is formidably traced in this book, radically changing our understanding of Matisse’s career.”—Professor Yve-Alain Bois, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton“Matisse believed passionately in the life-enhancing potential of decorative art but, as John Klein reveals in this absorbing, fully documented, and comprehensive study, many of the commissions he eagerly accepted would involve frustration and setbacks, as he strove to master new techniques, work effectively with his collaborators, satisfy capricious patrons, and, above all, meet his own exacting standards. Written with perfect lucidity and rare candor, generously illustrated, and handsomely designed, Matisse and Decoration places the personal ambitions and unique creative process of the artist center stage, but never loses sight of the wider cultural and political context that shaped Matisse’s thought and action. The unfolding human drama Klein describes makes for enlightening and compelling reading.”—Professor Elizabeth Cowling, Edinburgh College of Art

Book SynopsisBorn to Jewish radical parents in Chicago in 1939, Judy Cohen grew up to be Judy Chicagoone of the most daring and controversial artists of her generation. Her works, once disparaged and misunderstood by the critics, have become icons of the feminist movement, earning her a place among the most influential artists of her time. In Becoming Judy Chicago, Gail Levin gives us a biography of uncommon intimacy and depth, revealing the artist as a person and a woman of extraordinary energy and purpose. Drawing upon Chicago's personal letters and diaries, her published and unpublished writings, and more than 250 interviews with her friends, family, admirers, and critics, Levin presents a richly detailed and moving chronicle of the artist's unique journey from obscurity to fame, including the story of how she found her audience outside of the art establishment. Chicago revolutionized the way we view art made by and for women and fundamentally changed our understanding of women's contributions to art and to society. Influential and bold, The Dinner Party has become a cultural monument. Becoming Judy Chicago tells the story of a great artist, a leader of the women's movement, a tireless crusader for equal rights, and a complicated, vital woman who dared to express her own sexuality in her art and demand recognition from a male-dominated culture.Trade Review"The sections of the book covering Chicago’s artistic feminist awakening. . .are the best kind of biography—both juicy and educational, full of social and historical context, but also just a dash of gossip (open marriages, feuds with other artists, affairs)." * Hyperallergic *

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis groundbreaking book explores the Russian avant-garde during the early post-revolutionary years of 1918-1922 and brings together the works of three of its most influential artists. When Marc Chagall took over the People's School of Art in his hometown of Vitebsk in 1919, he had already established himself as an avant-garde artist. For the next few years, Chagall established the once-sleepy Belarusian town as a hub of revolutionary art making. Along with Kazimir Malevitch and El Lissitzky, Chagall presided over a flowering of creativity and artistic energy that became a focal point of Russian modernism. This volume features 250 works and documentary items from Vitebsk, bringing to life a little-known chapter in the history of art. Every aspect of this brief but decisive period is examined here, from Chagall's notion of proletariat art to the birth of the UNOVIS group and its trailblazing expositions. Correspondence among Chagall, Malevitch, and Lissitzky are featured alongside important works from all three artists as well as art from their colleagues and students. The result is a multifaceted portrait of a unique collaboration that forged a new path for artistic expression which extended far beyond the boundaries of Vitebsk.

  • Ohio University Press Modernist Art in Ethiopia

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn locating her arguments at the intersection of visual culture and literary and performance studies, Giorgis details how innovations in visual art intersected with shifts in narratives of modernity. The result is a bold intellectual, cultural, and political history of Ethiopia, with art as its centerpiece.Trade Review“Giorgis has assembled the archive of Ethiopian modernism that she brilliantly critiques. With deep personal knowledge, she takes us from magical healing scrolls to miniskirts, from monarchy to socialist tyranny, from Paris to Oklahoma. The details are fascinating and the artists’ works themselves extraordinary, but the real revelation is Giorgis’ understanding of the politico-cultural cross currents that converged in Ethiopia. Her presentation of them with an unflinchingly critical eye does more to celebrate Ethiopia’s singular achievements than any narrowly national story could provide.”“For scholars and students of Ethiopian and African studies, as well as those situated in the emergent field of comparative or alternative modernities, this book makes a landmark contribution. Indeed, Modernist Art in Ethiopia opens up an uncharted scholarly terrain and we ought to welcome it as an important harbinger of a new, critically minded study of Ethiopia.” * Northeast African Studies *“[This] volume places Ethiopia in a rich pan-African context by evoking how the arts, both visual and literary, can elucidate one country’s intellectual, political, and social history.” * African Studies Review *“A compelling and substantial vision of modernist Ethiopian art not as a single homogenous instantiation, but rather as a series of fascinating twists and turns from different perspectives within a variety of contexts. Overall, this dense analysis of intellectual thought as it relates to Ethiopian modernism stands out as an intellectual artistic contribution in its own right.” * International Journal of African Historical Studies *“Giorgis succeeds in giving a sense of the tumultuous reality in which these artists worked. Modernist Art in Ethiopia is a valuable scholarly introduction to 20th-century Ethiopian art history.” * CHOICE *“Modernist Art in Ethiopia is a necessary addition for libraries that hold collections in Non-Western art, postcolonial studies, or modern art…. While parts of the book are complex/theoretical, it also presents a linear historical account of modernist art in Ethiopia which can serve as an introductory text or starting point for further research.” * ARLIS/NA (Art Libraries Society of North America) *“A landmark study on Ethiopian modernism and experiences of modernity beyond the West. (Modernist Art in Ethiopia)presents a vital and under-documented history of the experience of modernity and the artistic movements surrounding Modernism, coming from a unique place that will appeal to a wide-ranging readership and is likely to become an important and treasured text.” * Africa at LSE blog (London School of Economics) *“With Modernist Art in Ethiopia, Elizabeth Wolde Giorgis writes a powerful indictment of Ethiopian exceptionalism…. Against the established, formalistic way of looking at Ethiopian artworks, Giorgis looks at visual arts and artists in the broader context of intellectual history. Hence, her five chapters contain rich analyses of novels, poetry, newspapers, and advertising, as well as an account of the relationship between artists, writers, and cultural institutions.” * Journal of Modern African Studies *“[A]n important contribution to transnational-global discussions about coloniality, decoloniality, modernity, global capital, and the political and cultural ramifications of these discourses and practices. Modernist Art in Ethiopia is as much a book on Ethiopia as it is about the world, its exclusionary configurations, and their differentiating implications. This makes this well-written and illustrated book an essential text.” * Journal of African History *“This is an indispensable text for anyone interested in the Ethiopian modern art.” * Ethiopia Observer *“Modernist Art in Ethiopia offers an incisive account of twentieth and twenty-first century art in Ethiopia. Drawing on original archival sources, and using a rigorous interdisciplinary approach, Elizabeth Wolde Giorgis reads Ethiopian modern art against the broader literary, cultural, and political contexts that have come to define Ethiopian modernity. A major achievement, Modernist Art in Ethiopia will be a touchstone for anyone interested in Ethiopian and African visual culture and intellectual history.”“Modernist Art in Ethiopia is the first critical study of Ethiopian modernism. Opening with a long-overdue critique of the Orientalist gaze that has biased writing about Ethiopian art, the book presents a provocative analysis of the social, political, intellectual, and aesthetic dynamics of Ethiopia’s tumultuous twentieth century. Giorgis masterfully weaves insights gleaned from untapped primary texts written by and about artists with reflections upon her encounters with artists who shaped the visual and literary arts of modern Ethiopia.”

Book SynopsisMalileh Afnan's work appears 'as a relic of an older civilization or an archaeological excavation into the collective psyche. This retropsective of Maliheh's work coincides with an exhibition of her work at the Martin Gropius Bau Museum in Berlin, November 2009.Trade ReviewThese images, made by hand, whisper. Whisper intimately. John Berger from the foreword Afnan's work reflects on what it means to survive and create within a system that has until now put artists from the Middle East at the periphery of the international art scene, with its emphasis on marketing rather than relevance to contemporary culture. She distances herself from the superficial with her mesmerising layers and mappings of patterns, repeated glyphs and ghostly outlines, which induce an almost trance-like state in the viewer. We are left with a sense of what it means to live in other times, in different places. In essence, Afnan's work is about memory, and her images of eroding traces, faces and places linger long in the memory. Rose Issa from her Preface to this volume. Maliheh Afnan has faith in time - her time. She is one of those contemplative artists who are totally aware of that 'right moment', which she calls 'the moment of grace'. Lutz Becker from his intoduction to this volume.

Book SynopsisIn Bill Stumpf's incisive book, he argues that good design is not about fashion, but about quality of life. The ice palace of the title refers to an elaborate construction built in St. Paul in 1992; for Stumpf, this castle symbolizes a sense of community and a love of play that has been lost in the wake of America's quest for speed and efficiency. Among his pet peeves are cramped airplanes, run-down taxis, aspirin bottle caps, malls, burglar alarms, and grocery bags with no handles. Things don't have to be this way, he assures us, as he offers many whimsical and practical alternatives. In a sometimes rambling, occasionally crotchety, often nostalgic, but consistently engaging book, Stumpf exhorts us to recapture those qualities that he classifies as civility.' Publishers WeeklySome of the best moments in Stumpf's small book of reflections come in his doubts about the work of colleagues who believe that doing something has got to be better than just standing there. Book SynopsisCollected essays honoring the work of British professors Carole and Robert Hillenbrand. Carole and Robert Hillenbrand are legendary British professors, both of whom have made immense contributions to the fields of Islamic history and art history, and they are highly respected and beloved by the academic community. For these two volumes, editors Melanie Gibson and Ali Ansari have gathered an eclectic mix of scholarly contributions by colleagues and by some of their most recent students who now occupy positions in universities worldwide. The eleven articles in the volume dedicated to Carole Hillenbrand include research on a range of topics, including the elusive Fatimid caliph al-Zafir, a crusader raid on Mecca, and the Persian bureaucrat Mirza Saleh Shirazi's history of England. In Robert Hillenbrand's volume, the thirteen articles include studies of a rare eighth-century metal dish with Nilotic scenes, Chinese Qur'ans, the process of image-making in both theory and practice, and a shrine in Mosul destroyed by ISIS.

Book SynopsisIn the mid-1800s, a group of painters based in New York turned their focus to the theme of the natural landscape to demonstrate the beauty of the wilderness. Their work enjoyed a popular national success that no other group of artists has achieved since. This seminal survey of the artists marks the first presentation of the outstanding collection at the New-York Historical Society. It features works by all the greatest artists of the group, including Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Church. Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, the book is also timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s first voyage up the Hudson River.Trade ReviewThe glorious landscape paintings of the Hudson River Valley—and beyond—which forged America’s first artistic movement.“In the first half of the 19th century, a group of painters working in New York City developed a distinctly American vision of the landscape. Their powerful interpretations of American scenery, which came to be known as the Hudson River School, ‘tell the story of how landscape imagery can shape both national and cultural identity,’ The book showcases more than a hundred of these images, many in full-page reproduction that convey the original paintings’ monumental scale…” ~Luxist.com “…The paintings show how American artists embodied powerful ideas about nature, culture and history—including a belief that a special providence was manifest to Americans in the continent’s sublime landscape.” ~NewYorkHistoryBlog.com

Book SynopsisExamining the notion of time in art history, Keith Moxey argues that looking at a work of art creates an experience of time for the viewer distinct from the work's place in the history of art.Trade Review“Every page is graced with an erudite yet refreshingly accessible writing style—a rare feat these days—which makes the reader feel excessively smart. . . . If you are not afraid to come away with more questions than you started with, this book definitely belongs within easy reach on your shelf. It is a book to anyone interested in the philosophy of time, the nature of art, and the ever-growing contemporary discourses of history and art history.” -- SeungJung Kim * Art in America *“Though it is a far-reaching critique of the kind of historicism that contents itself with studying the past without regard for the present, Keith Moxey’s Visual Time: The Image in History is not an attempt to liberate us from history. On the contrary, it is a critique of historicism in the name of history, and it never loses sight of the urgent issues that have fueled historicism, especially in the last century.” -- Amy Knight Powell * CAA Reviews *“Due to the breadth and variety of content and theory, the book should have wide-ranging application for art historians working in a number of geographic regions and time periods, and it should benefit those working in theory as well as object-based scholarship. . . . Moxey’s work is another valuable foray into a rich field, and it has the potential to reshape art historical discourse.” -- James Fishburne * Comitatus *"This book, with its sophisticated language and discussion of methodological and historiographical insights, will be key reading for graduate students and scholars across art history and related fields. While the case studies pertain largely to sixteenth-century northern European works, Moxey's thoughtful and provocative consideration of issues related to time, history, periodization, style, aesthetics, and presence in the interpretation of objects from the past will appeal to all who are grappling with these theoretical issues." -- Joyce de Vries * Sixteenth Century Journal * "Affect and historicism—dueling presences within any art experience—animate Keith Moxey’s superb new collection of essays on Northern Renaissance painting." -- Christopher P.
